John Kelly

Hi, I’m John and I’m proud to be running for President with Grassroots. FUSA has a big problem when it comes to fighting university management. FUSA should fight for student rights; as your representative, I will go to great lengths to achieve change.

The role of FUSA is to advocate for and support students but to do this it needs to be its own entity not just another facet of Flinders uni. It has been the policy of previous FUSA Administrations to incorporate FUSA as to grant the association the independence it needs to truly stand up to Flinders uni but when it came to putting that policy into action the student council did not incorporate FUSA. This had been a policy election after election and FUSA is still not incorporated.

This is why I am running to be your 2023 FUSA president because students at Flinders need a strong and independent student association that will fight side by side with them. That will stand up for and support students against a uni that does not have their best interests in mind.

Our student associations should be organising students to defend our rights. The world is in crisis, the planet is burning, inflation is spiralling and the rich keep getting richer. I’m proud to have organised the abortion rights protests this year. I want to fight injustice everywhere because we need radicals in FUSA, not careerist hacks from the major parties.

Left Action is a team of socialist activists. We stand against racism, sexism and LGBTI+ oppression, imperialism, war, the exploitation of workers and environmental destruction. We are actively involved in organising campaigns like the abortion rights demonstrations in solidarity with the struggle to defend Roe v Wade, Black Lives Matter protests, and Uni Students for Climate Justice.

We are fighting to:

- Take real action on climate change! The university must cut all ties with climate and war criminals. No defence and fossil fuel bosses on our uni council, and no research partnerships with them either!

- Stand in solidarity with Palestine, and all other victims of imperialism. Our uni must cut all ties with the Israeli apartheid state, and open its doors to house refugees here.

- Demand a living wage and fight the rich and powerful! We stand in solidarity with striking workers defending their slipping living standards amid an inflation crisis while billionaires rake in record profits.

- Defend our education! No more expensive youtube uni and no staff cuts! We want to fight the degree factory, slashing the vice-chancellor’s $1.2 million salary (!) and using every dollar to save staff jobs and student services.

- Bring traditions of solidarity and radicalism back to FUSA. Student associations should be collective left-wing bodies that organise students to fight injustice and oppression, on and off campus

Hello Flinders, I’m Billy! I’m currently completing my Bachelor’s degree in Forensics and Analyti cal Science (Forensic Biology). I was elected last year as Environment Officer, and this year I am running to be your 2023 Student President.

As Environment Officer I have been an active voice for students on the Sustainability Advisory Committee, and advocated for students on the committee for Student Appeals, and the Board of Inquiry. I’ve also managed campaigns such as a sustainable water campaign and organised campus clean ups.

I’ve led a campaign to end deadnaming at Flinders to ensure it is no longer a part of the Flinders experience, and championed building communities through the design process of the new McHugh’s space by securing an area for all students and clubs to enjoy running events.

We need a Student President who will continue to advocate and fight for students. I will do this by ensuring that students don’t go without - from FUSA continuing to expand the Grab n Go program, to combatting the financial burden of regional and remote placements, and meaningful ly tackling the barriers that students face when accessing housing.

I will fight to ensure Postgraduate students are better supported by the University and ensure adequate Sexual Assault Bystander training and Mental Health First Aid training for supervisors. I am passionate about ensuring that all students have access to spaces on campus which are safe and welcoming and am passionate about better resourcing our student spaces.

Myself, and the rest of the Activate team have got your back! We have the skills and experience necessary to fight for you and ensure that every Flinders student has access to a safe and acces sible education.

Hi Flinders! My name is Shanii, and I am running to be your next General Secretary with the Activate team. I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Arts, focusing on Indigenous studies and Gender Studies.

I’ve dedicated the last four years to making change and supporting community. I originally started out in grassroots activism volunteering with Amnesty International, with a passion for refugee rights and raising the age of incarceration. I have a strong belief in doing the right things and standing up to support others who weren’t afforded the same opportunities and privileges as me. This inspires my dedication towards an accessible campus, curriculum, and community, by supporting clubs and improving services.

Whilst working in LGBTQIA+ advocacy, I discovered just how important it is to provide people and communities with authentic visibility, representation, autonomy, and connection to one another. This has been my core belief and the essence of all my work. I used this belief to create campaigns and resources such as the Transgender day of visibility zine, ‘Queer Community’ the art initiative, chest binder campaign, and making autonomous spaces more accessible. I will use the knowledge and tools that I gained from these experiences in my role to develop authentic visibility to build community and opportunity

During the last three years at Flinders University, I’ve watched as students have struggled in both their academic and personal lives due to the lack of accessibility, support, and community. The lack of connection to one another and to support services post COVID has affected both students’ university experiences, and their mental health. I am dedicated to changing this and insuring student services work for students.

I think FUSA should be an activist organisation. As students we need an organisation that can campaign for issues of education and social justice. Whether it’s fighting to save courses and teachers from being cut, or campaigning for climate action and refugee rights, FUSA can and should play a role in leading and organising this activism. As General Secretary I’d make this my priority.

Hey all, I’m Jess Williams, and I’m running to be your 2023 Education Officer with the Activate Team!

I currently volunteer with a not-for-profit organisation and am a mum of 2 boys and I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Science (Forensic and Analytical Science). In 2022 I had the privilege of being your Mature Age Students Officer. I built up the Mature Age Collective to have the most extensive membership and activity in its history. Through my role on the council, I’ve engaged with the Mature Age community providing a platform for their voices to be heard which helped ensure that mature age students’ needs were met in the projects we worked on.

The increased cost of living leaves more students balancing an increased workload and the University will need to adapt its approach to supporting student needs. I want to be a voice for students to ensure that the University has a student-focussed approach. As a student who has to support my family, I am passionate about addressing the lack of consistency and clarity in the teaching, timetable and class expectations for students at Flinders.

Another way I will ensure students have equal access to quality education is to fight for the diverse degrees offered that we have come to love about Flinders.

I am passionate about education and will strive to represent you at every opportunity. I will amplify your voices in decisions about your education, advocate to stop unjustified group work and to have assignments marked and returned in a timely manner.

Growing up, I’ve always struggled with the general education system, believing that I was not smart enough no matter how hard I tried. However, after “learning how to learn”, I realized that there were multiple ways to approach learning and that everyone has their own unique learning styles. It has completely turned changed my worldview of education. With proper allocation of resources and educational materials, I am convinced we can offer quality education that would cater to ALL students and their different learning styles.

Hi, I’m Miriam, and I’m proud to be running for Women’s Officer with Grassroots!

I’m here because I want to see real action in this university’s support for women. The women’s collective, the women’s space, information about events and support networks- I want to see these things active for the students of Flinders. Women’s rights aren’t an issue of the past, and there’s no reason to grow slack now.

No one deserves to feel unsafe here at Flinders, and no one should feel that they don’t know where to go when they do. Importantly too, we need diverse support that caters to all womentheir cultural and religious backgrounds, and personal situations alike.

We have an opportunity here at Flinders University to have a student council, to have representatives that stand up for us, to have a system of equality and safety. I want to use that opportunity and make FUSA an association that addresses the issues women are facing- that has a presence at Flinders.

Hey everyone! My name is Aishwarya and I’m a first-year student studying Bachelor of Medical Science. I’m running to be your next FUSA Women’s Officer with the Activate team.

I arrived in Australia from India in 2021. After noticing the many cultural differences around the treatment of women, I felt motivated to aid in ensuring the safety and liberation of women. My goal is to fight for these causes both on and off campus.

As a woman, I am hyper-aware of the continued fight against sexual assault and sexual harassment on campus. I understand that it is hard to face, and believe the statistics around sexual assault and harassment on campus, but I endeavour to use my personal experiences and empathy to create a safe space for people to learn and join the fight against these behaviours.

I want to educate and raise awareness of crucial issues such as period poverty, PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), endometriosis and other conditions which many people are unaware of. I am dedicated to empowering and providing resources for women and non-men and have been running initiatives such as these since the start of high school.

I have a vision of Flinders being a place where all women feel safe and have autonomy on campus. I will use my role to work hard to build up the Women’s Collective to ensure we have the diverse experiences of all women in everything FUSA does.

I will call on the University to provide sexual violence awareness and mental health first aid training for teaching staff.

I also seek to combat the housing and poverty crisis and ensure we provide support for issues that disproportionately affect women.

Together, we can make a real difference.

I have been dedicated throughout my education to researching and defining issues that affect women. I consider myself to be a passionate advocate. The matter of women’s rights and wom en’s ability to reach out, choose a dream and follow it without hindrance is my hope for all wom en. To assist women in understanding what thoughts and beliefs might be stopping them from reaching their goals is important and I would desire all women to study powerfully at Flinders University knowing that as a body of women we support and help further each other in reaching our dreams. I believe in celebrating women and encouraging women to do the same.

One of my interests is unconscious bias and with that in mind, I think it changes how we can move forward positively when we can identify that changing a few words might help to make things clear rather than holding us back. As an advocate I would listen very carefully, I would hear what women are trying to express and I would look at the issues that might be prevent ing a situation being positive. This might include unconscious bias, whatever the element is my concern and commitment would be to taking what is negative and turning it into a positive and make sure the path becomes clear and straight. I am 100% committed to reaching resolution, to be an effective and honest advocate who will always stand up for someone struggling and help them to reach that dream.

Hiya fellow Flinders fiends!

My name is Alivia Vickers, I am studying a combined degree of International Relations & Political Science and a Bachelor of Languages.

Mental health accommodation at Flinders is lacking. Each year I have seen that students affected by disabilities and mental illnesses are pressured to perform at the same capacities, in the same ways, every day. Our needs change, but what is expected of us does not. With this, as the Welfare Officer I will create infrastructural change to provide substantial accessibility for all students that will allow for them to perform at the levels which suit them.

I have lived in poverty on my own with an invisible disability and clinical depression since I was 19 years old. As such I have experienced the reality of feeling trapped in ensuring I am earning a livable income while working jobs that do not accommodate my physical needs, then struggling to complete my study workload. With this knowledge, I will campaign to support students experiencing similar imbalances that set us up for failure.

2022 has highlighted the need for nurture and the importance of the eradication of stigmatized assumptions. Because of this, I will ensure that the How To Adult initiative expands to allow for students to gain an understanding of life skills in an accessible manner, void of judgment. As people, we are pressured to adopt façades of perfection. Humility and the admission of faults are considered as weaknesses, and we are expected to brave it all alone.

Likewise, I am running with Activate once again because they have empowered a young woman with a disability such as myself in leadership roles otherwise held captive by systemic misogyny.

I would love to be the FUSA Welfare Officer. I am very passionate about ensuring that university is a good experience for everyone and that welfare concerns don’t get in the way of achieving individual goals. I’ve been a Wellbeing Ambassador with Oasis for the last two years and have contributed to a number of fundraisers and mental health advocacy activities in that time. I believe that every student should be entitled to equal opportunities at Flinders and hope to be a voice for people who feel that they maybe can’t speak out themselves. As a postgraduate student in my second year of a Juris Doctor, I understand the student experience is often different to that of an undergraduate. It could be that you’re studying alongside full-time work or undertaking your study online - but the importance of a good student experience remains. I chose Flinders for its reputation as a practically focused, innovative and thoroughly modern university. I will work hard for this ethos to continue, by encouraging the university to remain committed to investing in high-quality teaching, ensuring you get the best learning outcomes as postgraduate students. I understand the importance of useful student services and will make sure your fees are spent wisely to deliver these.

If elected I will be a strong voice for all postgraduate students on Student Council and effective conduit to University management - working hard to guarantee your concerns are listened to. I will always be approachable, reasonable and transparent in my actions.

As a 3rd year medical student in 2022 I have been working as a general officer to bring accessible long term mental health care to campus for all students including but not limited to LGBT+, Indigenous, refugee, rural, disability, international and low socioeconomic backgrounds.

I am passionate about advocating for International Students. I have experienced firsthand the financial difficulties, homesickness, and many other challenges that international students go through. It is definitely not easy.

Therefore, if I am elected to the student council, I will advocate for building a better support system, tailored academic and financial support for International Students and to celebrate the journey of international students with INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WEEK.

I hold numerous positions within the International Student space including the International Student Ambassador for Flinders University, a Student Ambassador for StudyAdelaide and a Flinders University International Students As Partners (FISAP) member. I have excelled in the roles above and I am sure, I can advocate more for International Students if I am elected to the FUSA student council.

Hi everybody! My name is Suyatra Ghimire, and I am currently completing a Master of Biotechnology. I am running as a candidate for International Students Officer with Activate! I have served as a Class Representative throughout my undergraduate degree, and I am currently a Topic Representative for two topics. These roles have exposed me to a plethora of student support systems, their intricacies, and ways in which to advocate for any issues when it comes to my peers.

Being an international student, I have faced every hardship that an international student has to face from financial and mental issues caused by work, life, assignments and studies to feeling left out or not fitting in. I will work hard to ensure representation of international students on the college level, course level, and topic level as well as in Empire Times.

My major goals are to improve academic preparation for new international students; advocate to eliminate racism, discrimination, and stereotypes against international students; improve representation of international students in student clubs, social media channels, and the student council, and advocate for jobs in the university for international students while focusing on flexible timetables for classes in topics with high numbers of international students. I am passionate about promoting international cultural exchange programs with locals, ardent about making the lives of international students easier by providing more access to healthy foods, and financial support, and above all, ensure that all international students have equal opportunities while enjoying university life to the fullest.

Hi Flinders! My name is Mary Zhang, and I am delighted to be running for the role of International Students Officer for 2023. I am currently a first-year student studying the Bachelor of Speech Pathology.

As an international student who has been studying in Australia since Year 11, I believe that I have a good understanding of challenges international students might have studying in a new country, and I would love to help my peers make the most of their experiences at Flinders University.

In high school, I was a student ambassador at International Education Services to provide support for fellow international students. This year, I have been a Inspire Change mentor, supporting Year 12 students. I have a strong passion for getting involved in a variety of student associations. I am currently a member of the Flinders University Speech Pathology & Audiology Association committee, as well as the event coordinator of Chinese Students and Scholars Association of Flinders University. I would describe myself as a friendly, caring, and supportive person, and I do wish to apply these qualities of mine to being an international students officer in the Student Council. I believe that the Student Council plays a significant role of supporting students in every way, and I would love to be a part of it!

Although it is only my first year here, I already have a genuine love for this community and want to share it with everyone. I am a visible member of the queer community, being part of the asexual community, panromantic, and nonbinary. My plan if I’m elected into this role would be to start a regularlymeeting peer support for LGBTQIA+ people who are struggling with sexuality, gender, or anything related to being a part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

I have leadership experience in other clubs, and I am currently an Executive member for three clubs, including being the Treasurer of the Flinders Fencing Club, the President and Founding Member of the Flinders University Undead Poets [and Writers] Society (President), and the Vice President of FUTURE (Flinders University Tabletop ‘Und Roleplay Enthusiast). I have experience organising and running events, and will use the experience to organise and run various student engagement events throughout the year.

Hi there, Flinders!

My name is Riley, I use he/they pronouns, and I am running to be your Queer Officer in 2023 with the Activate team. I am currently serving as a General Council Member on FUSA and as the Secretary of the Flinders University Queer Collective, while studying a Bachelor of Creative Industries (Writing & Publishing).

As an autistic non-binary lesbian, I have firsthand experience with the lack of accessibility, inclusion, and intersectionality within LGBTQ+ spaces, and understand how crucial it is that these things are improved upon Flinders wide.

Within activism, my passions lie not only in equity and justice, but also empowerment and celebration for marginalised communities. As such, I have contributed to and participated in events relating to Wear it Purple Day and Sexual Health Week, built a diverse collection of LGBTQ+ books to install in a future mini library, and assisted my fellow FUSA mates on their own projects across the board.

If I am elected as Queer Officer, we will fight for Flinders University campuses to embrace gender diverse students, with further developments for gender neutral toilets and gender affirming signage across all bathrooms. We will fight for LGBTQ+ events to be inclusive of disabled folk, with plans for low-pressure activities and sensory-friendly environments. We will fight for comfort and safety in the context of study and relaxation for LGBTQ+ students, with a goal of introducing a secondary Queer Space within the library, wherein I would like to place a mini library.

Environment Officer Harvey Menadue

I’m Harvey Menadue, and I’m running for Environment Officer with Left Action

The crisis of climate change is an existential threat to the lives and livelihoods of billions around the world, producing extreme weather events like flooding and wildfires seen in Australia. These disasters are the effects of burning of fossil fuels to power profits of the rich and powerful, whether that’s the coal, gas and oil companies, the war industry, plastic and steel production, or Chancellor Stephen Gerlach at Flinders, former Chairman of Santos.

As a socialist activist, I think students have the power and obligation to stand up to the destruction of the planet by protesting, striking and marching, and FUSA should be the head of organising this.

As a Flinders student, I have organised protests and marches of young people as a part of Uni Students for Climate Justice and the climate strikes. Left Action have also been part of organising the abortion rights rallies, the Books not Bombs campaign and the Black Lives Matter marches.

We are fighting to:

-Demand immediate action on climate change, starting with cutting Flinders’ ties weapons and fossil fuel companies such as BAE systems.

-Stand in solidarity with refugees and the international struggle against imperialism and for a free Palestine.

-Stand in solidarity with striking workers, and support the struggle for a living wage.

-Fight for student and staff rights on campus by fighting against course cuts and instead cutting the vice chancellor million-dollar salary.

-Bring back radical traditions of struggle and solidarity into FUSA. Like trade unions, student unions should take up left wing causes and involve the union and students in organising, supporting and marching in these campaigns against oppression and injustice, such as the Black Lives Matter and the abortion rights rallies, the climate marches and anti-fascist action

My name is Lupin, and I’m an international student from Taiwan I am running for Environment Officer with the Activate Team. This is my first year of a Master in Environmental Health degree. I’ve chosen to pursue a postgraduate degree because I am deeply passionate about our environment and human health.

I believe that the Flinders community should be safe and sustainable both on and off campus.

I will implement a diverse approach to ensure all campuses are sustainable.

I will reduce single-use plastics and encourage both students and staff to bring their own utensils to use on campus, as well as supporting sustainable food packaging.

I will promote eco-friendly living by organising lectures and workshops on how we can all make a positive environmental impact in our own lives.

I will continue building a community around sustainability and would also like to work to promote the Grow Eat Learn Garden as a safe, money-conscious way of living.

I will hold the University accountable for its environmental impact, and work with the University to achieve greater steps towards sustainability.

I will ensure we have the full picture of Flinders Universities impact, ensure that Flinders divests from fossil fuel providers and major polluters and ensure Flinders discloses our Greenhouse Gas emissions regularly so that all staff and students can see the crucial areas of work that is needed.

I with the Activate Team will involve and collaborate with the flinders community to create diverse achievable strategies to combat the environmental challenges facing us all.

Hello everyone! My name is Danielle Rohrlach and I’m running to be the 2023 Disability Officer with the Activate team!

I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Science (Forensic and Analytical Science). While studying I have had the privilege of representing students as a topic representative and being the Secretary of the Mature Age Students Collective. I’ve actively supported the Mature Age Students Collective in various social events and in building an inclusive social space along with the Mature Age Student Officer for students to form connections.

In my experience at Flinders University getting the help and support, I need for me to complete my studies is not always an easy or direct path, even with a disability access plan. I am passionate about having diverse voices heard and empowering others. At Flinders, I would like to see more awareness around neurodivergence, invisible disability and mental health; and ensure that there are more inclusive spaces that are safe and sensory-friendly. The previous Disabilities Officer has done an incredible job advocating and making change at Flinders and I would like to continue this. This would include ensuring the new Disability Space is visible, inclusive, and welcoming to all.

I’m a mature age student completing my first uni degree after never finishing high school. I have a neurological condition that makes it difficult to meet many requirements of my topics. This is not always the case. Some days are good, some are awful.

It wasn’t until I engaged with university that I found out that I had a disability. I was struggling with so much that is specific to academia. So much so, that I thought for a very long time this must be a personal failing.

Our disabilities are defined by the way the external world interacts with us. There were roadblocks and hurdles in my life that I hadn’t had to overcome before.

As a student living below the poverty line, it cost me hundreds of dollars to get a psychiatrist to sign off on my condition so I could then get an access plan verified, so that I could then have something substantial to prove that my struggles were real.

Even with a DAP, students must massively advocate for themselves and rely on topic coordinators to help.

As it currently stands, the Flinders Uni disability policy is vague, fails to meet key criteria, and does not adequately empower disabled students.

Reasonable adjustments are limited, often boiling down to allocating extra time. Fantastic if you have a quiz, not helpful if you have multiple assignments due.

All that effectively does is increase your work load for that topic.

We are forced to rely on the goodwill of our educators to provide their extra personal time to help us. We currently have no solid foundation to ask for alternative methods of assessment.

The disabled student is put into a position of discounting grades. They are not a fair measure of academic achievement.

This can absolutely change.

As Social Activities Officer I wish to provide both social, academic and professional events from FUSA itself but also provide training and instruction to clubs to help them reach a scope of students beyond FUSA alone. I believe that social events are as vital to students as professional and academic for their development.

I have experience in leadership positions in clubs such as the Tabletop “Und” Role Play Enthusiasts, Academic Science Club and Undead Poets and Writers Society. These have given me vital experience in organizing and running events that will be vital for this position.

Hi all! My name is Nethli Peiris and I am running for the position of ‘Social Activities Officer’ with UNITE.

From a young age, student representation has been something I have been greatly passionate about and have focused on in my extracurriculars. Through many years of leadership involvement, I have had the privilege to work alongside a diverse range of staff and students. This has given me invaluable insight on the key skills required for such a role, and has ultimately allowed me to hone-in on learning the strategies behind what makes an effective two-way channel between students and leadership groups.

During my degree, I have had the opportunity to be a Topic Representative for 6 topics which has allowed me to further build on my ability to work with a diverse range of academics from various colleges within Flinders.

I also have 4+ years experience being a member of the Adelaide Sri Lankan Students Association (ASLSA), served as Vice President in 2021 and am now the current President of the association. I am also a Year Representative for the Flinders University Medical Science Society (FUMSS).

Involvement and leading associations such as these has allowed me to host a plethora of social events and community-based activities. Through this, I have accumulated the skills necessary to provide that linkage between the Student Council, FUSA Events Team and Students Clubs as well as effectively provide input to Student Council from a social activities perspective.

Hello everyone! My name is Antonio Pupulin, I am currently a 1st-year master’s student in biotechnology, and I am running to be your Social Activities Officer!

Anyone who has moved away from home knows how difficult it is to make friends in a new environment. Using my own experience as an international student who has made Adelaide their home, I will work towards a more inclusive and welcoming university. Flinders has welcomed me and has been instrumental in creating lasting connections for me here, so I want to ensure that everyone receives the same welcome.

Joining a club or two (or several!) is the perfect way to immerse yourself within the community, so I will make sure that clubs receive the resources they need to continue doing what they do best – creating connections that will last a lifetime!

I believe that clubs are crucial to the fabric of Flinders and I will build our campus community around them. I intend to foster a campus-wide sense of community by promoting existing clubs and events and expanding opportunities to integrate with the day-to-day operations at FUSA.

I am currently studying microbiology and have previously completed a Bachelor of Psychology. Through this journey, I have a deep long-lasting connection to Flinders. Through being a volunteer with the Mature Age Collective and a Topic Representative, I’ve developed the professional skills to advocate for the diverse experiences Mature Age students face.

I regularly see Mature Age students go without adequate support. Many students have shared their experience of feeling forgotten despite representing approximately 50% of the student population. This is why I will advocate for increased visibility for Mature Age students

Mature Age students experience unique issues that are often overlooked, from difficulties acclimating to modern teaching styles, to pre-existing responsibilities such as children or caring duties.

This is why if elected we aim to expand support for and create increasingly suitable spaces where parents and carers can feel comfortable. As well as cultivating a space where they feel like they have a sense of community that is noticed and nurtured. By providing dedicated spaces like the Mature Age Space and ensuring parents’ rooms aren’t locked away from students.

There is a high student population of people of colour at Flinders, but there is little representation of that cultural diversity within the campus culture and university media. Our identities have often been oppressed and ignored, so I am committed to providing platforms and opportunities for people of colour to feel comfortable in expressing our diverse cultures, religions and traditions with the broader community to create a more culturally accepting university.

I am a skilled advocate with extensive experience in the Flinders community as President and Secretary of the Queer Collective, a General Council Member, and Welfare Officer for Student Council. These roles have enabled me to deliver projects such as Be A Better Human, Pride Fest, Transgender Day of Visibility, Student Poverty Week, Period Product Dispensers, Wear It Purple Day, How to Adult, Grab & Go, and more.

Hi Flinders! My name is Bree Elliott and I’m running to be a General Council Member with Activate! I’m currently in my third year of the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) and Bachelor of Letters in French.

Through my experience of working in schools for 4 years, I understand and value the importance of providing a safe environment that accommodates all students, and how an inclusive, supportive environment can impact students’ learning experience, growth and wellbeing.

While Flinders University currently has a number of initiatives and campaigns which bring awareness to issues faced by students, there is a lack of actual support against the issues that harm and discriminate against students on a regular basis. This can be seen in the difficult processes involved for students to change their name in the university systems. This prevents students from using their actual, current name as their name on the system, leading to repeated discrimination by staff.

As a General Council Member, I will create the safe environment the students of Flinders University deserve, so that all students can enjoy uni life and make the most out of their uni experience. I will advocate for marginalised students, work towards promotion awareness initiatives, and improved support for students at an individual level.

Most importantly, I will listen to the student body and work to achieve the change that you all want to see.

My name is KuangFu or Kevin Chao, and I am running for the general council member position under the UNITE student organisation. As an international student with a few years of experience studying at Flinders as a health science and physiotherapy student, I have many insights into what the student body desires that can enhance the overall learning experience for everyone. UNITE is made of a multi-cultural, diverse team that can represent everyone equally regardless of differences in culture, sexuality, gender, or religion. With experience living in Taiwan and America, I can relate to the struggles international students have, especially in their first year of studying in a completely different country. With my insights into the transition to a new environment, I believe I can make the most practical contribution to improving the overall living and learning experience of all Flinders students. In addition, I have also had experience in representing or organising a body of students. To list a few, I was vice-captain on my high school basketball team, a vice-president of the Flinders health science club, and an international representative on the house committee of the Flinders’ hall student accommodation. I’m currently studying Bachelor of International Relations & Political Science, with a strong connection to FUSA and the broader Flinders community!

I am a skilled advocate and community builder volunteering with UN Youth SA and Debating SA. I have experience) running complex events centred around empowering the voices of young people.

I pride myself in helping deliver the Grab’n’Go food stalls initiative (bridge it somehow) to help combat students who go without meals and resources to ensure students are supported in their day-to-day student experience

I am committed to using these skills to empower the Flinders community to help students overcome the increasingly challenging post-pandemic experience. I’ll work with the Activate team to transition away from unnecessary tests and exams and group assignments that do not reflect the best way to assess skills. I will oppose any cuts to our education and fight to get our assessment and feedback back on time and our exam dates released with enough time to prepare.

As a student from a diverse ethnic background, I share many similar experiences with international students and the opportunities and connections not offered to them. I will advocate for unconditional inclusion in all student-centered activities. International students contribute greatly to the University and in turn, the University should uplift their voices.

My name is Lucas, and I am entering my 3rd year in a Social Work degree.

I’m thrilled to announce that I will be running again to continue my work as one of your 2023 FUSA General Council Members with the Activate team!

I have been a long-term advocate for students as the President of the Flinders University Social Work Association (FUSWA). These roles, coupled with my own academic journey, have exposed me to the diverse range of student support systems and the complexities faced by students across all year, and degree pathways.

Social inclusion, student engagement and student well-being are my key areas of focus, with FUSA and FUSWA providing me opportunities to create cross discipline collaborations with other Flinders Clubs and Associations.

I intend on continuing this work by strengthening these collaborations in 2023, to include student-based activities focusing on building an inclusive, cohesive, and socially diverse student community that extends beyond Flinders. This can expose students to disciplines and opportunities not only within Flinders, but across the broader community.

Drawing on personal integrity, life experiences and willingness to watch people shine, provides me the foundations to achieve this and help students thrive.

WHY AM I RUNNING?

As students grapple with the cost of living crisis, it should be the job of student representatives to ensure the financial stresses on students are eased. As a General Council Member, one way I will fight to reduce these financial burdens is by campaigning to reduce the cost of carparking, because nobody should pay hefty sums of money just to access their education. Hey! I’m Lockhart Tynan, running for NUS Delegate and studying for a Bachelor of Sci ence (Biodiversity and Conservation).

During my time at Flinders, I have found a passion for environmental action, working towards the implementation of a Native Garden, and volunteering my time to the EAT, GROW, LEARN garden. These projects highlight students’ care for the environment and how students play a vital role in shaping how we will tackle Australia’s current environ mental crisis.

I aim to familiarise myself with the broader Flinders University student population to expand my understanding of other issues I may have not faced directly. I would benefit from making meaningful connections with a diverse range of students, examples of my existing engagement with the student community include working with the Queer So ciety, Mature Age Collective and FUSEC. I believe these engagements have helped me familiarise myself with the diverse student population.

As a student who has experienced poverty, racism, and homophobia within and out of Flinders University I have spent a great amount of time dedicated to improving the lives of students. Unfortunately, these experiences are felt throughout Australia’s student population, where student poverty is at an all-time high, and racism and homophobia have been exposed to still be extremely present across our universities.

By engaging with students nationally, I hope to bring these topics to the forefront of conservation to ensure that our student minorities are being heard and that action may be taken to these issues. I have already proved that I have a deep passion for these is sues and now would love the opportunity to take action to improve the lives of students both at Flinders and Nationally.

My name is Alivia Vickers, I am studying a combined degree of International Relations & Political Science and a Bachelor of Languages with Japanese as my major and Mandarin as my minor.

Mental health accommodation at universities is lacking. Each year I have seen that students affected by disabilities and mental illnesses are pressured to perform at the same capacities, in the same ways, every day. Our needs change, but what is expected of us does not. As NUS Delegate I will fight for universities to commit to infrastructural change.

I have lived in poverty on my own with an invisible disability and clinical depression since I was 19 years old. As such I have experienced the reality of feeling trapped in ensuring I am earning a livable income while working jobs that do not accommodate my physical needs, then struggling to complete my study workload. With this knowledge, as NUS Delegate I will campaign to support students experiencing similar imbalances that set us up for failure.

2022 has highlighted the need for nurture and the importance of the eradication of stigmatized assumptions. As people, we are pressured to adopt façades of perfection. Humility and the admission of faults are considered as weaknesses, and we are expected to brave it all alone.

Likewise, I am running with Activate once again because they have empowered a young woman with a disability such as myself in leadership roles otherwise held captive by systemic misogyny.

Hey all, I’m Jess Williams and I’m running to be your National Union of Students Delegate with the Activate Team!

I am studying a Bachelor of Science (Forensic and Analytical Science). I currently volunteer with a not-for-profit organisation and am a mum of 2 boys in my personal life. As a student with additional challenges, I am passionate about addressing the lack of consistency or clarity in the delivery methods and expectations for students at Flinders. I want to fight for our degrees to be broadened to ensure we have a range of experiences and choices. I would like to continue to advocate for the many students who have additional commitments.

If elected to represent Flinders at the National Union of Students, I will fight to have student poverty meaningfully addressed, take immediate action on climate change, and continue the fight toward free and equal access to tertiary education. This experience would be valuable in directing campaigns of advocacy for Flinders Students and ensuring our voices are recognised nationally.

The increased cost of living leaves more students balancing an increased workload and the University will need to adapt its approach to supporting this, I want to be in those conversations to ensure that student consultation is the priority. Consulting with other passionate students will empower me to workshop with them and return with a clear path forward to fight for the rights and wellbeing of Flinders students.

My name is Amanueal, and I am running for NUS Delegate with UNITE.

UNITE is a passionate and diverse team of experienced student leaders, who ensure your needs are listened to, and heard.

UNITE stands for:

• Expanding financial support for students during the cost-of-living crisis.

• Bringing back life on campus through clubs and events

• Ensuring that all students are safe when arriving, leaving, or on campus.

• Improving teaching quality and student voice in Academic affairs

• Increasing support for International Students

• Ending Deadnaming on Campus and taking REAL action on Queer Issues

I would firstly like to say thank you for giving me that chance to represent you. I come from Ethiopia with an Afro-Semitic background. I arrived in Australia in 2019 to finish high school, and here I am at Flinders University doing Information Technology. A little about myself

Outside University life. I love painting, playing games, and my personal favourite: pestering my cat with love.

My journey for progression and equality started early on in high school and now being given a chance I will be able to apply that with in UNITE.

I am running for POC officer so I can help build a more inclusive and spacious environment for people who identify with colour or of any who come from marginalised communities. It is time to step up and change the growing anxiety while we still can. I will be responsible for campaigns to support help and include all persons of colour.

It’s time the FUSA Council focussed on making sure that all students get a fair go no matter race, cultural background, sexuality, gender or religion.

I’m a 5th-year student in Law and International Relations and Political Science, and I’m studying French and Acting at the same time. I’ve also studied Medical Science in my time at Flinders and therefore have a pretty good understanding of the different colleges and the issues in each one. I’m passionate about representing Flinders students at a national level and speaking to all different communities about how we can improve the life of undergraduate students in Australia.

Hi, I’m Jacob and I’m running for NUS Delegate with Left Action.

Our education is under attack. Fees have doubled, and thousands of staff have been sacked across the country. The National Union of Students is the peak body of student interests. It has led campaigns against education cuts and supported same sex marriage in the past. NUS needs to lead these sorts of campaigns again and can only do so with radical activists.

Left Action is a team of socialist activists. We stand against racism, sexism and LGBTI+ oppression, imperialism, war, the exploitation of workers and environmental destruction. We are actively involved in organising campaigns like the abortion rights demonstrations in solidarity with the struggle to defend Roe v Wade, Black Lives Matter protests, and Uni Students for Climate Justice.

We are fighting to:

- Take real action on climate change! The university must cut all ties with climate and war criminals. No defence and fossil fuel bosses on our uni council, and no research partnerships with them!

- Stand in solidarity with Palestine, and all other victims of imperialism. Our uni must cut all ties with the Israeli apartheid state and open its doors to house refugees here.

- Demand a living wage and fight the rich and powerful! We stand in solidarity with striking workers defending their slipping living standards amid an inflation crisis while billionaires rake in record profits.

- Defend our education! No more expensive YouTube uni and no staff cuts! We want to fight the degree factory, slashing the vice-chancellor’s $1.2 million salary (!) and using every dollar to save staff jobs and student services.

- Bring traditions of solidarity and radicalism back to FUSA. Student associations should be collective left-wing bodies that organise students to fight injustice and oppression, on and off campus.
