Student President The truth is we are in need of individuals, who have the potential to represent us and our college, who can give their heart and soul for the betterment of the student body. I cannot encourage you enough to make the right choice and vote for me into the Secretarial office. My dedication and hard work will lead us into a golden age.

Rahulkumar Shah As we all know that flinders university is celebrating its 50th anniversary, so being a Student council President this year, I want to be a part of its history. This year, for the elections at Flinders university, for “Students Council President for which I had always wanted to participate, so I decided to take part in it. I am very excited for I am going to have the chance to improve the university and make a change for the better. I consider myself an ambitious person so I am convinced I should run for president. Elected presidents usually have a bad image since they promise things which they never accomplish. I have to make a difference and prove that I can do better. Well, I want to tell you I am a leader of caliber. I am open minded, helpful, down to earth, experienced in my role. I believe in equality and innovative methods. I have attended various seminars and workshops and leadership camps. This year’s election is of dire importance to the short-term and long-term future of us Flinders students. We need strong leadership this year. I would like to submit to you that I am the best qualified candidate to lead the Student Council and the student body as its president.

I hope my professional conduct and serious attitude have shown you that I am devoted to the cause of improving our college. Thank you.

Student President should be doing whatever we can to reinvigorate parties and events at Flinders. The bar should be a central feature of campus culture and targeted to the student cohort. Flinders activists have again played a part in preventing deregulation of higher education. In collaboration with the National Union of Students I have held events on campus to raise awareness on the issue, I will continue the fight.

Caleb Pattinson My name is Caleb Pattinson from Activate and I am running for FUSA President. I am currently studying Education and Sciences and I’m in my third year at Flinders.

Vote for the candidates who will put the students first. Vote for the candidates who will put the focus back on Flinders and restore campus culture. Vote [1] Activate! Progressive. Accountable. Proven.

I have already spent two years on Student Council working hard to represent all Flinders students. I understand how important it is to listen to student voice and act practically to improve your University experience. This year I have created a sustainable School Association structure tailored to your degree as well as re-establishing the Education Collective. The rationale behind this initiative is to improve the student representation at Flinders as well as creating more events around campus. I have been a leader in the Stop Lomborg campaign over the past few months, working really hard to help maintain the credibility and value of your degree. Over 1000 students had their say on car-parking through the survey I ran in September. It is obvious students are appalled at how it is currently structured. Vote for a student voice that will continue to advocate for a fairer parking system. I am making sure that when the new Hub opens next year we have an amazing student bar. We

General Secretary unions and campus culture.

Brodie May I’m Brodie May from STUDENT VOICE, and I’m running for the position of FUSA General Secretary.

Whether you’re from Australia or overseas, postgrad/ undergrad, study externally, part-time or fulltime, STUDENT VOICE will stand up for your rights within NUS and FUSA during 2016. Vote 1 Brodie May NUS delegate. Vote 2 Grace Hill NUS Delegate. Vote 3 James Vigus NUS Delegate. For FUSA General member of Student council. Vote 1 Brodie May, Vote 2 Grace Hill. For Student President, vote 1 Grace Hill. For General Secretary, vote 1 Brodie May.

I have a strong history of activism, and that’s exactly what we need in FUSA. Attacks on students like fee deregulation, cuts to penalty rates, course cuts, overcrowding, and unpaid placements are not going to disappear on their own, or because we sit around talking about it. We need action! This year I’ve been a key activist in the campaign to get the University to take a stand against the racism in Australia by declaring itself a refugee welcome zone, and offering scholarships to refugee students. This is something I’d like to continue next year, and something which FUSA should be taking a lead on. I am an active club member, in one of the most active clubs on campus. I know what changes need to happen to invigorate and revitalise our club culture on campus. We need more clubs funding, easier funding access, more student control of decisions regarding our university life, and most importantly, a strong defence against the plans of the Liberal government to destroy student

Genevieve Danenberg My name is Genevieve Danenberg and I want to be your General Secretary and NUS Delegate for FUSA in 2016. This is my fifth year at Flinders University and I’m currently completing an Honours degree in Social Health Sciences. I lived at Flinders University Hall for 4 years, so Flinders Uni is my home. I care about every student and want you to be happy and enjoy your time at university, just like I have.

in 2013 I was the President of the volunteer events committee, Anchor. In 2014 I was the Coordinator of the Academic schedule, and ran swotvac study sessions for many students. At university, I have been the Secretary of FUDGE and am currently the Vice President of the Flinders University School of Health Sciences Association and I participated in the Flinders E-mentoring program. In 2016, Activate and I will: fight to ensure the campus bar is student run for the benefit of all key stakeholders provide more support for clubs and associations in a variety of forms ensure events run by FUSA and by all clubs/associations are safe, fun and are organised with students’ interests in mind ensure there is a reliable and affordable textbook facility on campus ensure services like welfare breakfasts and yoga sessions are continued and improved continue our school association project, ensuring all students are represented and associations can organise events and merchandise and provide support and help for all students. I want to see our student union offer more services and am passionate about ensuring these services are inclusive, accessible and welcoming to all students. Vote [1] Activate: Progressive Accountable - Proven.

At Uni Hall, I was actively involved with helping to organise events, and

General Secretary

Jaccob Simpson My Name is Jaccob Simpson, I am studying a Bachelor of international tourism, I’m currently the Treasurer for the VRC (Village Representatives Council) for Flinders living organizing the budget and events over the year along with being on the student directors board at FUSA assisting with the organisation of O-Week events for flinders University. I believe my life experience and achievements make me a suitable candidate for the following positions: Social activities officer, General council member or General Secretary. While completing my year 1st year of university studies I also maintained a full time position as a manager at a Dominos pizza franchise completing all aspects of running the franchise. I possess various Organisaitonal, Enthusiasm, Leader ship and Creative skills that I believe I can contribute to these positions; I have always shown an interest in high responsibility and demanding rolls and enjoy opportunities to challenge my self. The skills I have learnt from my years of managing under a franchise working along side with another manager to run a store showed me very quickly that the ability to work in a team and effectively with others is crucial to success, every individual has their own

set of skills and knowledge, being able to combine these elements of individuals and include all was a huge part of my position. I have participated in various training seminars to teach teamwork skills, the most memorable of these was a Rally hosted in the Gold coast each year hosted by head office to train and develop skills with in the organisation all of which orientated around working efficiently in teams. I actively volunteer at various events and functions when I am able as helping out has always been a defining trait of mine.

Rahulkumar Shah As we all know that Flinders university is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, so i want to become a part of its history by becoming this year’s general secretary. The General Secretary post in FLINDERS is a prestigious milestone in a student’s life, since they are at a position that is given only to a handful of people. They would have gone through some pretty rough patches to get there, so it is a legitimate achievement as a student.

“Power” perspective They have beaurocratic “power” as part of the central student body of the institute. They are in the spotlight for their respective responsibilities. They are the first people the new batch of students would look upon. Experience perspective At the end of the day, immense amount of work is involved for the General Secretary. Events need to be organised, people need to be convinced, funds need to be sorted, hiccups need to be handled, and nothing is predictable. They have crossed their comfort zone the moment they were elected, and it is their responsibility to make things work. This imparts a lot of life skill pertaining to management and soft skills, but in a more specific environment. One might even consider it practice, or training. And it is the lessons learnt during the whole process that provide them with experience. Moreover, my aim is also to provide job opportunities to students who have finished their degrees by giving placements in their respective field of study so that they can have experience as well as skills when they face the real world. This job training could be included in their study programme so that they need not worry for getting job. I hope i could become general secretary this year so that i can achieve what i want to do for this university, THANK YOU.

Education Officer I’ve served on student council this year, which has allowed me to: • Host America Themed National Day of Action • Help set up school associations • Argue for continued delivery of quality services • Help put on great events for students

Jack Harrison I’m Jack Harrison and I’m running to be your Education Officer. I study Law and International Studies, I’m a FUSA General Councillor, the President of the Social and Policy Studies Student Association and a resident at Deirdre Jordan Village. We need a strong Education Officer that works with all students to make sure that we have fair and accessible education. I believe this involves: • Working with School Associations • Talking with students • Fighting for you It’s fantastic to see students wearing jumpers of school associations around and I will work with associations so everyone enjoys pubcrawls, balls and other activities. I’ll fight for your degree and experience at university which is more important then ever with pressure form the Government and University to deregulate fees.

It’s important FUSA defend, promote and engage students and their interests. I was proud to do this during the American themed NDA. I dressed as Uncle Sam and talked to students about fee deregulation and the Government’s move to Americanize higher education. Helping set up the school associations and argue for better service delivery has allowed students to enjoy student representation more in tune with their unique issues. I will keep the free welfare breakfasts, pubcrawls and advocacy services. I hope that I can have your vote and we can make our new university the best it can be. Vote [1] Activate! Progressive . Accountable . Proven

I don’t believe we can achieve this by shouting at students in courtyards. As your Ed. Officer I want to engage in conversation with all students in a variety of forums.

Welfare Officer

Jason Byrne Jason part of the FRESH team and believes that students have a right to attend University feeling safe, confident and relaxed in order to succeed. Australian students shouldn’t be sentenced to a lifelong debt sentence. Jason will continue to fight against Fee Deregulation to prevent the introduction of $100,000 degrees. Jason will campaign against extended waiting times for Newstart Payments and promote Mental Health Awareness on campus. Jason will run bigger and better student welfare events with more free stuff and cute animal petting zoos to help students de-stress. Post Graduate Students Officer • I will raise voice to create more opportunities of academic concerns such as more opportunities to participate in the scientific conferences and workshops. On the whole, I want to make sure that the FUSA and the university is addressing the issues the postgraduate students are facing. Thank you very much for your vote!

Himal Kandel Hello everyone! With the background of being student representative in both developing and developed settings: in central medical campus of Tribhuvan University in Nepal, and in the prestigious London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, I commit to utilize the skills and knowledge learnt in the welfare of postgraduate students at the Flinders University. I, if given the opportunity, would like to take immediate initiatives in the following areas (list not exclusive): • I believe that strong alumni network is essential in a university from which all the postgraduate students can benefit. As post-graduate students in Flinders University comprise of students from all over the world, wouldn’t it be awesome to meet our friends and alumni wherever we go? Furthermore, I believe networking is really important for our careers as for example advice from our seniors can alone be very important help. I will liaise with the university to have a proper database and mapping.

Christine Bennetts My name is Christine Bennetts and I am a first year PhD candidate within the School of International Studies, full-time mum to a rambunctious four year old, and long-time Flinders student. I am running for Postgraduate Officer because as the most isolated students on campus, we need strong representation and networks to ensure social interaction, and the best educational outcomes.

Students of International Studies. If elected, I intend to end the “Doctoral Dispersion” by creating a strong network of post-graduate students by utilizing the Schools Association Project and Faculty and School Committees. This network will be the foundation for a number of projects which I intend to implement next year including: a postgraduate interdisciplinary online publication or blog, post-graduate events, pushing for thesis binding on campus and ensuring that we are represented alongside general FUSA delegates on the relevant university boards and committees. The biggest, and most important project, however, will be the strengthening of a post-graduate sub-committee within the FUSA structure, aiming to include postgrads from all Schools on campus. I have taken part in providing feedback and recommendations to the School of International Studies in regards to the Honours program, and we were able to effectively inform and provide an extra pressure for change within that degree. That was a letter crafted by four students… imagine what we could do as a collective? Vote [1] Activate! Progressive. Accountable. Proven.

Anupol Bordoloi Hello! My name is Anupol Bordoloi and I am running for the position of Post Graduate Students Officer of the Flinders University Students Association (FUSA). I strongly believe in unity on campus and giving everyone a fair chance and a say despite gender, nationality, religion or belief. Therefore, my first task as your Post Graduate Students Officer will be to try and unite all the post graduate students studying at Flinders as only through unity can we hope to bring about change! I will also try my utmost to lobby for improvements across the board throughout the campus in relation to meeting the various needs of the post graduate students studying at Flinders. If elected, I will endeavour to improve the student services and other facilities provided to post graduate students on our campus, not only in the short term but the long term also. Apart from this, I will try my level best to achieve the following objectives: 1. Advocating for stopping cuts to our courses and increases to class sizes. 2. Better and more affordable services on campus, including parking and food.

I am very passionate about improving and expanding the facilities and opportunities offered to post graduate students of Flinders University and if elected, I will make sure that the voices of ALL post graduate students are heard and their concerns attended to. So in order to move forward and create positive changes for ALL post graduate students, please cast your vote for me, Anupol Bordoloi, to serve you all as your Post Graduate Students Officer. In addition to having more social events, I would like to integrate more dance classes and dance-focused events throughout the year. I would also like to have more discussions and meetings to discuss common post-graduate issues and create an internet forum for students to discuss their concerns. It has been an honour to be your officer this year, and with your support I hope to continue in 2016.

Shannon Abeywardena Hi. My name is Shannon Abeywardena. I have been your post-graduate representative over this past year. International Students Officer

Himanshu Gupta

Labannya Rozario

Yiran Xu

Hi, I am Himanshu and I am submitting my name as a nominee for International Student Officer in this student council elections, Submitting with humility in my heart and focus on my mind because it is a responsibility that I will not take lightly. I don’t have much experience but I do have the spirit to serve people. I believe service to people is the hardest but most rewarding thing to do. Service in organizations requires selflessness, devotion to duty and a “can-do spirit daily. Being an international student, its an amazing experience for to study at flinders university. My main motive is to support all the international students, as I myself know what problems and difficulties an international student face when they came to a new country where everything is new for them and also separation form family and friends to get better studies. But, yes, In a new country a person will get to know many people with different culture and language. Also, a good opportunity to fly and to prove ourselves.

I am Labannya Margarate Rozario, student of Biological Sciences. I nominated myself as an international student officer for student council 2016 because I am really interested to work for the student council. As an international student I understand our problems, our needs, our thoughts very well. I believe I am capable to work for the betterment of the international students and to improve relationship between university and the international students. I will also encourage international students to get more involved in university co-curricular activities so that they can improve their university experience. I have been class officer in my high school for 2 years and I really enjoy working with a group and for the students. While I was in high school I worked each and every day for the student council. I have been a volunteer in different programs. I also really appreciate company of others so that I can learn something from everyone because I believe there is something to learn all the life. Being a member of student council is like being more involved with university campus. I will utilize every moment of the period if I get voted for the position. I will give my best to the position when I become the member of council.

I, Yiran Xu hereby nominate for the international students officer. The reason I wish to be international students officer is that I want to devote myself to helping international students to have a more pleasant study environment in Flinders University. And I believe that the voices of international students should be heard and their interest should be protected. In my own experience, leaving my hometown Chengdu in southern China to explore Adelaide from 7 months ago opened up a whole new world. As I found myself immersed in a different culture, it struck me that Australians, previously perceived by myself as peculiar beings, were in fact the norm in their context and that I was the stranger. The moment in which a Chinese student land in Adelaide and realise that the natural beauty of Australia is beyond imagination, the first-time visiting an Australia friend and noticing that people behave and react in familiar ways but the small differences are what really matters. The awkward dinner conversations of me with my Australian host family, the sudden realisation that Australia is such a long way away on so

International Students Officer many different levels. However, these are character building experiences that bring out the best and worst in me and from which I learn so much. I put my hands up to be an international students officer and I want to act as a bridge to connect international students with domestic students. I truly believe that global awareness and international collaboration during the formative years results in more rounded individuals, encouraging international students to see things from different perspectives and helping them to make informed decisions, acquiring transferable skills that will be useful to them and will remain with them for life.

Prashanth Magandram Hello, I’m Prash Magandram, an international student from Malaysia and I’m delighted to be running for the position of International Student. I’m currently in my second semester of my master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The course consist of more than 80% of international students which allows me to keep in touch with the ongoing issues international students face. At the same time, I can

understand the difference between a local and international student as I am integrated with the local community in terms of education, work, social and sport aspects. While I am enjoying the daily experiences of living and studying in Australia, I understand first hand the challenges faced by international students, as I personally have undergone that transition and integration period to settle into a new environment. I currently work in the Environment and Conservation sector and therefore know how hard it is for international students to be considered for jobs. I will advocate for international students to be provided with rules, regulations and basic information for each job sector and stop generalising information. Coming from a multicultural country, I would encourage more main events like Multicultural Festival throughout the year. I believe that a lot of specific information is not provided towards international students’ but can be solved by providing monthly or quarterly term e-newsletter posting for international students. Joining forces with the FUSA team, we would be able work together into pursuing a diversity theme while having fun organizing multicultural activities that will range from cultural night, discussion and seminar nights, informal and of course social events that be fully focused to your benefit as an international. Therefore, I believe that as International Student Officer for 2016 I will be able to utilise my experience, my positive and friendly personality to work with other international students and other members of the student council to implement activities and improve services for international students here at the university. Furthermore, as the International Student Officer of 2016 I will continuously strive for inclusivity of all students at Flinders University as I believe that Flinders prioritizes embracing and respecting of all ethnicities and cultures. Finally, I believe that as Flinders International Officer I can add to the diversity of the Student Council as a proud South Pacific Islander.

Hi my name is Loretta David and I am running to become the 2016 International Student Officer for the Flinders University Student Council. During my past two years here at Flinders University as an International Student from the Fiji Islands, I have developed significantly in the areas of adjusting to a new cultural system. In my first year I spent my time observing the culture of Flinders University and did not get out much. Women’s Officer ‘study then go’ without taking the time to take in Flinders University’s culture and atmosphere, and look into ways to reach more of the student population so everyone can feel included.

Krystal Reilly My name is Krystal Reilly and I would like to run for the student council as either Women’s Officer or as a General Council Member. Currently, I am in my 4th year in a Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology) and Bachelor of Arts combined degree. I am very passionate about women’s issues and would like to be able to help students who identify as women by raising awareness of existing Flinders University services as well rallying to implement new services that students feel are needed. As a general member, I hope to support efforts by the women’s officer and the social activities officer in order to help strengthen support networks for my fellow students and to encourage people to connect and engage while at university. I have learned from experience how difficult it can be to reach out and get to know your peers as an undergraduate, so would like to make sure that my time on student council will result in developing more interactive activities on campus for students to get to know each other. I hope to bring new insights on the perspective of the students who

Angela Tomarelli Why do we see 20 % more women than men graduating from Australian universities yet, still, women get paid 18% less than men for the same job? We know that sexism is still a reality and I believe that only through strong advocacy for women’s issues will we see change. As Women’s Officer I believe that fighting for the rights of women at university and educating female students around these issues will help change these sad statistics. As a passionate Flinders student in my 3rd year of an Education and Languages degree and also a mom, I understand some of the challenges that female students face in trying to balance uni, work and life. In my time on council I will bring awareness to these challenges and find solutions that can help students achieve the necessary balance to do well at Flinders. I believe in the right for all women to walk proud and safe at anytime on campus, free from the threat of abuse – verbal or physical, including university organized activities such

as pub-crawls and balls. I support all facets affecting women with a particular focus on campus safety, study support for primary child carers, and the promotion of women as leaders in primary university roles. If elected as Women’s Officer for 2016 I will: • Work to promote gender equality and opportunities for women at Flinders • Continue the fight for excellent security on campus and better lighting in isolated car parks. • Institute a Date Rape Awareness Day • Create a Flinders Women’s Association • Propose a 1-2 hour crèche giving Early Childhood Education students the opportunity for experience in the field and giving students with children the chance to attend a tutorial without using a full day care service • Listen to your suggestions!

I will also encourage female students to get more involved in university co-curricular activities so that they can improve their university experience.

Queer Officer I will develop relationships with the Queer societies from other universities through sending a delegation to the Queer Collaborations conference. I will also try to develop more services for Queer support outside of campus life.

Alexander Chen My name is Alexander Chen. I am a third year Mathematics student. I would like to represent the interests of queer students to the council, and to advocate on behalf of Flinders University queer students in broader ways. I will try to listen to what queer students want me to do, and then act on that. I am also really passionate about the Queer Society and the Queer Space, and how to make them thrive. I am going to increase visibility of the Queer Society and promote the society to more students. I will advocate for queer identifying students across a variety of issues. I believe activism and fighting for queer rights is the most important thing in Flinders University because on average, 80% of LGBT people experience public insults. I will also try to create a positive and supportive environment for Queer/Questioning students and run educational workshops throughout the year. Together members of Queer Society can educate students outside the society about Queer issues.

Janet Lyon Julia Wills My name is Julia I’m Bi/Pansexual and I decided to apply for the position of Queer Officer as I believe that I poses many skills that will allow me to greatly fulfil the duties it entails. Some of these skills I have been developing over many years. They include: leadership, team work, listening creative planning. For the past 2 years I have been a Girl Guide leader and before that a Girl Guide, which has allowed me to develop my leadership and teamwork skills while encouraging young girls to perform to their best, As a part of my training I have developed very good listening skills and grief counselling. If elected to the position of Queer Officer I have some fantastic ideas for activities that will be very beneficial to the Queer community at Flinders University as they will provide support systems to those in need of them. I am applying for the Position of Queer Officer on Student Council for 1 December 2015 to 30th November 2016. I identify with one of the groups written in the job description. I am a mature age student and believe I would bring a unique perspective to the position because of this. I will have no trouble co-ordinating or implementing any campaigns that might be of importance to this group and would look forward to chairing the Queer Society.

Tori Harris

Ali Roush

Hello, my name is Tori Harris. I am a second year animal behaviour student here at Flinders University and am running to be the environment officer for 2016. I am very interested in anything environmental, from the biggest conservation projects to the smallest organised clean ups and recycling. In July of 2014 I packed up my life in Queensland and moved to Adelaide to follow my passion. Scenery, like the one we are blessed with at Flinders University, are not common, and must always be treasured and protected. I have spent the last year getting to know the ins and outs of the University as well as how lucky we are with the environment we are surrounded by. Sustaining environments is my passion and I hope that one day my career will take me to South Africa to work side by side with the amazing flora and fauna on some of the biggest and most important conservation projects. Whilst I’m at Flinders University, I hope to be greeted by the quack of ducks, the tweet of birds and fresh clean air for a longtime to come.

Hi, my name is Ali Roush and this year I am running for Environment Officer. As a third year Conservation student, I’m passionate about sustainability and environmental preservation and I am dedicated to helping Flinders University reach its full potential in this regard. I am currently Secretary of the Flinders Fair Trade Collective here on campus, but Fair Trade is far from my only interest. If elected I plan to work on projects such as better recycling systems on campus and the implementation of biodegradable and environmentally friendly cutlery alternatives. I will also be promoting awareness of problems that stretch beyond campus life, from food waste to fossil fuel divestment campaigns. From the experience I’ve gained through involvement with groups and organisations within and outside of university, I feel I am in an ideal position to achieve these goals. I’m also always open to ideas, and will be happy to listen to and work with anyone on campaigns they feel are valuable to the Flinders community. With your help, I hope to fulfil Flinders potential to become the

Accessibility Officer

Jocelyn Neumueller Hello, my name is Jocelyn Neumueller, I am currently a 2nd year Bachelor of Medical Science student and I am running for the position of Accessibility Officer. I am running for this position as I am passionate about seeing those living with disabilities have an equal opportunity in education and all other aspects of life. During my studies at Flinders University I have faced a number of barriers in completing my degree, however I have strived to find ways to overcome these challenges. These have included ensuring that: • the laboratories and lecture theatres are wheelchair accessible and any required adaptive aids be available to optimise participation • facilitating creation of wheelchair accessible parking in close proximately to lecture theatres • course content and exam protocol be adapted to suit special needs I would love to have the opportunity to assist other students navigate the challenges that they face and to find ways to make university an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all.

Outside of university I am very active within the local community; I am involved in sailing, wheelchair basketball, para-canoeing and youth mentoring. I have volunteered in a number of organisations aimed at assisting those living with disabilities; I have volunteered with Sailability for a number of years and am currently the president of Sailability Goolwa, I am a mentor in the Julia Farr Youth Mentoring program and a member of the Julia Farr Youth which is a group of young people living with disability who are enthusiastic about disability youth issues and passionate about bringing change. As Accessibility Officer I would: • make myself known to students with disabilities • provide a forum that students can express any difficulties they are having • assist students in finding solutions to difficulties • initiate social activities for peer support

build solidarities, collect ideas and make the university totally disabilityfriendly. I am very proud as a co-founder of Flinders Disability Awareness Club (https://www.facebook.com/ dacflindersuni) in May, 2015. In a collective meeting for students with disabilities organized by FUSA, we proposed the idea of establishing a club. It sparked my interests of improving disability awareness in the university. After that, I represented FUSA to participate the International Students conference held by Council of International Students Australia in July 2015. I had chance to learn and exchange ideas about disability living and disability service in universities Australia. As a student with disabilities, I realized I have to face many social barriers (not just the physical obstacles, but also social stigmas and attitudes) that mainstream people may not see. My personal and professional experiences in disability field formed my value, which guides me to be a disability advocate. Accessible environment is important to involve students with disabilities. Especially universities like Flinders University that spreads out in a hill, students with disabilities may feel daunting when they miss the way. I have helped a wheelchair user who could not find the lift (which hided in library) to Unibook store.

William (Yuewei) Zhao Hi! My name is William Zhao, I am so excited to apply for the position of Accessibility Officer. I would like to be an advocate to work alongside with other students with disabilities,

I genuinely love to communicate with students with and without disabilities, and exchange ideas about disability issues. Disability should not be a negative word/ image. Universities, as educators for the future leaders, should lead the change of people’s attitude. Thus,

Accessibility Officer disability awareness is vital to impel the process in the universities. I am happy to collaborate with students and start the change.

I am focussed and goal orientated and I would have no issues attending various meetings. I will have no issue running any campaigns and will look forward to working with other similar Advocacy groups and university staff. I will look out for the best interests of students with a disability at this university and I look forward to chairing the Accessibility SubCommittee.

Janet Lyon

I will advocate on their behalf for the best possible outcomes for all people living with both a visible and/ or an invisible disability and to be treated fairly, equally and with total respect.

Hello my name is Janet Lyon and I am a Bachelor of Health Sciences student in my second year at Flinders University. I am applying for the Position of Accessibility Officer on Student Council for 1 December 2015 to 30th November 2016. I have lived with an invisible disability for over 20 years. I am a mature age student and believe I would bring a unique perspective to the position because of this. I have served on Committees before – the Maths and Science School on Sturt Campus and Grange and Ashbourne Primary School. I have chaired meetings whilst at Ashbourne Campus. I have a good rapport with students I have met through my studies. I have worked for 4 years in the field of Disability and in all my other jobs throughout my life I have always worked with people. My goal at the end of my studying is to be an Occupational Therapist. I love working with people.

several projects that I have been instrumental in starting and I would love the opportunity to see them through to the end. These include: • The redevelopment of the bus are on Registry Road • The creation of a mobile phone app to navigate Flinders University campuses • Addressing the inaccessibility of the Tonsley Loop Bus. If re-elected I would endeavour to: • Improve campus culture, especially for those at university accommodation, Sturt and Tonsley campuses • Improve campus security • Increase accessibility on campus • Build the Accessibility Caucus • Improve public transport to Flinders to free up parking I believe in giving students a voice and ensuring sure that they are heard. This is your campus and you should have the opportunity to be represented properly and have your issues addressed. Vote [1] Activate! Progressive . Accountable . Proven

Sarah Polanco

Thomas McCourt

My name is Sarah and I am a passionate student of Flinders who enjoys seeing other people reach their full potential - with both studious and of course social means. It has been proven that if you have the right balance of work and social interaction in your life you are more prone to success. I as your Social Activities Officer plan to create events such as pub-crawls, balls and organising our university’s O’week, in a way where you feel comfortable and are able to enjoy yourself to the fullest - while creating lifelong friends along the way. I work well with others and I personally enjoy organising events which have a positive effect on the people involved. I also love listening to ideas and taking them on board, so there will be no voice left unheard. I look forward to representing you in the best way that I can.

As a Law/International Studies student in my third year of study, I have met students across a range of disciplines. I’ve been involved with the Law Students’ Association, and have been elected to an executive position of activities director within this organization for the 2015/2016 term. This is very similar to the role of Social Activities Officer, and the skills would be very transferable. Throughout my life I have always been involved in student bodies, and have gained an understanding of how such organizations operate.

My multidisciplinary studies have meant I have formed relationships with many students from a range of faculties. I would love to see FUSA recognizing the importance faculty specific organizations, as well as working towards improving their relationships with such organizations, as these collectives often have better access to students than the university-wide student body. I acknowledge large efforts have been made by FUSA to achieve this; I would like to assist in continuing this to go further. Increasing on campus engagement with students is something I have a particular interest in. I believe creating an inclusive, on campus

I have been at Flinders since 2011 studying Bachelor of Digital Meda and have worked with various clubs and societies, notably the Film Society from 2012 till Sem 1 2015, as well as being a General Council Member this year. I greatly enjoyed being on FUSA Student Council and helped with various activities this year around on campus. It would be my hope that I could continue to make campus culture grow even more next year as I run for re-election. My main goals for the year would be to: • Have more events on Campus, including working with the new bar and hub events, as well as new ideas for events around Adelaide. • Give help for Clubs and Societies on their events, including a Club event calender for students to read and more advertising space for club events. • Give help for School Associations with their pub crawls if requested by them.

The skills I have learnt from my years of managing under a franchise working along side with another manager to run a store showed me very quickly that the ability to work in a team and effectively with others is crucial to success,

every individual has their own set of skills and knowledge, being able to combine these elements of individuals and include all was a huge part of my position.

General Council Members (6 Positions) campaign in 2016 through FUSA. FUSA should demand that the train line be extended, that more busses go to and from Flinders more often, and that public transport be made free for students.

Brodie May I’m Brodie May from STUDENT VOICE, and I’m running for the position of FUSA General Council Member. This year in my role as FUSA Environment Officer I have also been running a survey on public transport. The situation for car parking on campus is dire, with expensive permits for no guarantee that you’ll ever find a park. This situation is exacerbated by the fact that for many students, public transport is too infrequent or inaccessible for them to use. I want to continue my

For Student President, vote 1 Grace Hill. For General Secretary, vote 1 Brodie May.

Grace Hill I’m Grace Hill from STUDENT VOICE, I’m running for the position of General Council Member. I’ve spent two years as an activist in FUSA, as the Student President and General Secretary. During my time in FUSA we’ve organised the Flinders campaign against university fee deregulation, campaigns against racism and islamophobia on and off campus, a campaign for Flinders to offer scholarships to refugee

students, and demanding FUSA take good positions on penalty rates and student working conditions. Things are getting worse for students. The cost of living has gone up, as have the hidden costs of studying. Food on campus is obnoxiously expensive, and the university continues to raise parking prices. Unibooks is closing, potentially raising the cost of textbooks. We need council members who will stand up around these issues and actually fight for something better, and over the past two years I’ve proven that this is what I am best at. FUSA should also be launching a serious anti-racism campaign next year. The situation we face is one where Liberal and Labor push extreme racism and Islamophobia to distract from their attacks on ordinary people, and to justify their campaign of terror in the Middle East. This has a direct impact in Australian society and on campus, where numerous students have reported being victim to racist attacks and verbal abuse. This also culminated in Nazi rallies being held in Adelaide. As General Secretary I took the initiative to organise the counter-rally alongside other Student Voice activists, which was a resounding success. FUSA should be leading campaigns like this, and starting to stand alongside students who face racism. We don’t need the politics of the Liberals and Labor in FUSA, we need the politics of student rights, anti-racism, and activism. Vote 1 Grace Hill for General Council Member.

Anupol Bordoloi Hello! My name is Anupol Bordoloi and I am running for the position of a General Council Member of the Flinders University Students Association (FUSA). I strongly believe in unity on campus and giving everyone a fair chance and a say despite gender, nationality, religion or belief. Therefore, my first task as a General Council Member will be to try and unite all the students studying at Flinders as only through unity can we hope to bring about change! It is also vital to empower the student body with a voice that will stand up for their rights. Hence, I will try my utmost to lobby for improvements across the board throughout the campus in relation to meeting the various needs of all the students studying at Flinders. If elected, I will endeavour to improve the student services and other facilities provided to students on our campus, not only in the short term but the long term also. I will try my level best to build a good rapport with all my fellow students, so that I can better communicate the activities of the Student Council to the general student population. Tori Harris Hello, my name is Tori Harris. I am a second year animal behaviour student here at Flinders University and am running to be a general council member for 2016. In July of 2014 I packed up my life in Queensland and moved to Adelaide to follow my passion. As I had no family or friends in South Australia I was received by the welcoming and understanding cohort that is Flinders University. I am a very strong willed and dedicated person; I volunteer weekly at the RSPCA, obtained a diploma in Counselling and am a mentor in the Inspire Mentor Program. I have spent the last year getting to know the ins and outs of the University as well as what we really require too make our education a successful experience. The opportunity to relocate has given me confidence, life experience

I have decided to submit a nomination to the FUSA General Council for 2016. I have decided to put myself forward because I am interested in serving the wishes of the student body however I can; whether that be letting people know about up-coming events, listening to what other students have to say about their university experience and how it can be improved, and by bringing these, as well as my own views to the general council. If I am elected to the general council, I will not be interested in promoting any cause or ideology. My only concern when it comes to my duties as a representative is the interests, needs and concerns of students and nothing else. A vote for me is a vote for true student representation, not preaching one view and silencing all others. A vote for me is a vote for respecting and advocating for all students, not for character assassination.

Jordon O’Reilly Jordon is part of the FRESH team and wants to make sure that FUSA is a strong voice that advocates for students. As an education student, Jordon strongly believes that education is a vital pillar for success which should be determined by your ability, not the size of your parent’s bank account. Jordon is an active member in university sports, representing Flinders at Australian Uni Games as well as in local leagues.

James Scott As a mature age part-time student, I am in a unique position to serve the student community. I look forward to faithfully representing the student community on council. In particular, I would take an active role in representing the concerns of mature age students, as well as those unable to study full time. I understand those challenges. I will listen to your concerns. I will be a strong voice on council.

Jordon has previously represented Flinders as a National Union of Students delegate where he advocated for more resources and training for our tutors and lecturers to make sure students are given the best chance to succeed. Jordon wants to see decreasing on-campus costs for all students by pushing for cheaper food and printing and lobbying for the cost of textbooks to put onto HECS instead of being paid for upfront. Hamish Richardson I’m Hamish Richardson, and I am running for General Council Member with the Activate team. Students, obviously, represent the future of this nation and our world. Students deserve the policies and leaders that nurture our welfare and academia. Unfortunately, this is not the world that we live in. Students have been under constant attack from the conservative AbbottTurnbull government, whether it be on the front of fee deregulation, or on the relentless push to strip away the penalty rates that are so vital to student welfare. The only thing that has, and will, stop them is the last and strongest line of student defence; student representation and advocacy. I want to represent you as General Council Member, so I can continue this fight on your behalf. I want to be your advocate, your voice, and your friend on student council, along with the rest of the Activate team. As a progressive candidate, I will ensure that your Flinders University is the safe, open and powerful campus that you deserve. FUSA needs to be an influential student voice, and I will always operate under the principle that FUSA should be open with services far and wide

Christopher Norman My name is Chris and I am running for General Council and NUS delegate for FUSA. I have a strong belief that student unions should be doing as much as possible for students and that with a little work FUSA can be an outstanding voice for students. If elected I will work tirelessly to fight against fee deregulation, fight for more student benefits and most importantly fight for better student outcomes. I hope to ensure that moving forward more and more social activities occur on campus so that students have a reason to stay at Uni after class and so that we can have a great campus culture. I am studying a Bachelor of International Studies and Law, I have been fairly active on the clubs scene during my time at University with stints as Secretary than President of Flinders University Digital Gaming Enthusiasts.

General Council Members (6 Positions) member for them in one year term as well. I also a member in Government Officers club in Bangladesh. Because of my father’s diplomatic missions abroad I am an alumni member of International School of Geneva, Switzerland and Webster University Saint Luise Missouri USA.

Syeda Afsana The vibrant student community of Flinders University is unique in its nature and characters. The multinational student community brings a rhythm to the university life that is rare to find.

With Flinders University stepping in to its 5o year anniversary the role of FUSA in associating itself with the student community has now become more important and challenging. I would like to be very much a part of it and would like to contribute to Flinders University student community.

The Student Council at Flinders has historically lacked a diversity of ideologies, thoughts and ideas, instead representing only a narrow subset of views (including selfdescribed radicals and revolutionary Marxists). Most students at Flinders couldn’t care less about political and ideological tussles, wanting only to have their voice heard freely and fairly. I aim to represent these students on council by being a strong independent voice for the furthering of student freedoms and ideas. Remember, a Vote for Me is a Vote ForU!

Flinders University comprises of a larger international community. The needs, requirements and problems of this community is different. As part of the international, postgraduate and Australia Award group I would like to be actively involved in the student association for not only the betterment of the general student community. If I have the opportunity to work as a General Council member I can participate in different student council activities. It will allow me work with other committees to learn from how committees on different areas work. Presently I am working as one of the O’week student directors. This positon has taught me that postgraduate representation is important in all levels I am also holding the post of cultural secretary of Flinders University Bangladeshi Student Association. Sean Cullen-Macaskill My name is Sean Cullen-MacAskill and I am currently in the second year of Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education and running for a position as FUSA General Council Member. I am dedicated to making Flinders University the best possible place for students to live and study and will be a proactive member of our student organization. I have maintained an active involvement in student life through my role as a peer-mentor for the School of International Studies and have worked with other students, members of the staff and faculty in developing new strategies and approaches for easing the transition to university for first year students and improving the school-wide retention rate. If elected I will use my experience to develop and improve orientation, enrollment and mentoring programs which assist students in their transition

to university study. I will also work hard to address issues surrounding student welfare, most particularly through opposing any increases to car parking fees. I will fight for better food on campus.

who encouraged me to take part in activities outside of university work. Therefore, as a general council member I will strive to assist other students in maximizing their academic experience here at Flinders University.

Krystal Reilly Loretta David Hi my name is Loretta David and I would like to become a general council member for Flinders University Student Council. Coming to Australia to study from the Fiji Islands, I believe that I can add to the diversity of the student council. In addition to this I am also in my second year in my disability and development degree and I believe this will further add to the diversity of the council if I am selected. In my upcoming third year I would like to be able to be an active participant in school activities as I have come to realize that being a university student is one of the best times in one’s life. Furthermore, facilitating opportunities for others to become active in university activities is a vital role in university. For example, I would have never nominated myself for international student officer or general council member had it not been for other students

My name is Krystal Reilly and I would like to run for the student council as either Women’s Officer or as a General Council Member. I have learned from experience how difficult it can be to reach out and get to know your peers as an

General Council Members (6 Positions) undergraduate, so would like to make sure that my time on student council will result in developing more interactive activities on campus for students to get to know each other. I hope to bring new insights on the perspective of the students who ‘study then go’ without taking the time to take in Flinders University’s culture and atmosphere, and look into ways to reach more of the student population so everyone can feel included.

Joshua Sunman My name is Josh Sunman and I’m hoping to be a General Council Member for in 2016. I am in my a second year of studying a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice and Arts (American Studies). I believe Flinders is a unique university. Being set away from the frantic pace of the CBD, it’s the ideal place to stick around for a while after class and either grab a drink, or a bite to eat with some friends. Or rather, it would be if; Venues were open at times that suit student lifestyles, food and beverage prices were affordable for student budgets, and a more diverse range of options were made available.

With the completion of the new Student Hub 2016, now is a crucial time to try and reclaim some campus culture, whilst also looking out for student welfare. Vital to this initiative is fighting for the new Hub Bar to be student run, to ensure that it’s somewhere enticing , affordable and available for students to spend time. With the recently announced closure of Unibooks, the expense of textbooks is a major concern. I will lobby for the continued presence of a textbook provider to ensure that students have ready access to affordable textbooks. Also crucially important to maintaining a positive university experience for students is continuing the campaign against fee deregulation. University should be a place of learning and discovery, not of worrying about how much a particular elective will cost you in the long run. Having been involved with NUS campaigns such against deregulation as well as other initiatives such as the welfare survey I have seen firsthand how important continued pressure is in bringing about policy change. Luke Hanson My name is Luke William Hanson and I have nominated for the position of “General Council Member”. In 2012 I graduated with a Bachelor of International Studies from Flinders University. I have subsequently returned to complete a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice. If elected to Student Council my aim will be to listen to your concerns whilst providing an alternative, rational voice to the Student Council debate. Many students have disengaged from FUSA and the wider Flinders Community because the Student Council does not represent their ideological views or concerns. I can provide a strong and alternative voice on Student Council. In conversations with friends and fellow classmates on campus. Concerns have been raised about a lack of car parking on campus, the expense of compulsory university textbooks and a lack of student activities and community engagement beyond O’Week. General Council Members (6 Positions) position. I will give my best to the position when I become the member of council.

Labannya Rozario I am Labannya Margarate Rozario, student of Biological Sciences. I nominated myself as a general council member for student council 2016 because I am really interested to work for the student council. As a general member I will work as a catalyst in every step. I will help all other members of the council to fulfil their responsibilities. I believe I am capable to work for the betterment of the council thus for the students. I will also encourage other students to get more involved in university cocurricular activities so that they can improve their university experience. In my opinion the general members do have important role in the council so I would love to start from the beginning. I will utilize every moment of the period if I get voted for the

Liam McNally

I’m a Creative Writing Honours student with a keen interest in publishing, and I’ve already been on the 2015 Empire Times Editorial team since issue 5. Since taking over the job after the last editor left, I’ve had a massive crash course in all the in’s and out’s of magazine publishing and bring to this new team a wealth of experience and knowledge, as well as having already established relationships with a number of talented contributors. I’m the familiar face in this new team and I’d love to continue bringing you the high level of quality content Empire Times has already established.

I love Flinders University and I’m very passionate about Empire Times Magazine being a platform for student voices to be heard. I’ve been contributing to Empire Times for two years, and I was a Columnist this year; I have written collaborative pieces with fellow contributors, opinion pieces on gender and feminism, interview pieces, and I have covered events such as the All About Women Festival in Sydney this year, and the Flinders University Bluestocking Week events of 2014 and 2015. I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Arts Enhanced Degree for High Achievers, double majoring in Women’s Studies and Creative Writing, and I hope to work in journalism, editing, or publishing one day. The role of Empire Times Editor would be an invaluable experience for me, and a role I would be honoured to hold.

I’m a Creative Writing student and have been an active contributor to Empire Times as well as being a subeditor throughout the year. I have developed as thorough a catalogue of experience possible outside of already being a sub-editor. I am passionate about continuing to push the magazine to a wider readership and uphold the magazine’s tradition of showcasing the great work of a variety of Flinders students. I feel deeply that Empire Times is an indispensible part of student life on campus and offers a great experience to students and, providing a wide selection of coverage on many subjects.

If elected, we will maintain the classic features of Empire Times that have made it the fantastic magazine it is today. We also will aim to make the magazine more updated and relevant to students; increase the magazine’s online / social media presence; and introduce regular columns on new topics, such as sports and cooking. We are three progressive and passionate writers and thinkers, who seek to tie Empire Times deeply with the culture of Flinders University. Together we plan on making 2016 Empire Times’ best year yet.

Kayla Gaskell

Craig Blane

Anita Sanders

Kayla is our Empire Times guru, she’s been subediting the magazine all year while also reviewing for Buzzcuts and ReadPius. She is a strong communicator with the capability to interview, write smashing articles and create engaging social media. She’ll be helping us to sustain the fun tone of Empire Times while also pushing her editorial skills to return great feedback.

Craig is the muscle of the team, he knows how to put things into action from his experience in the SES, Judo club as the treasurer and contributing to Empire Times. He is the sleuth of video gaming and knows how to keep a conversation going with his puckish atti tude, which is perfect for encouraging more people to contribute to the magazine.

Anita is the heart of our team. She has plenty of experience organising projects as a stage manager and interning at the Adelaide Festival Centre. She has reviewed for Radio Adelaide and TREv, where she also contributed her photography skills. Anita is highly motivated and passionate about graphics, working within both the writing and digital media disciplines.

Craig will be using his rogue ways to make Empire Times more inter active and suitable for a more diverse audience.

We’re the hopeful new editors for Empire Times with dreams to take the magazine to a new level, and we don’t mean moving the office upstairs. With our finger on the pulse of the publishing industry, we know what works and we know how to make a great publication between our unique skill set and experience. OUR AIMS FOR EMPIRE TIMES: As the editors of Empire Times our key aim would be to boost readership through the print and online medium. This will be done by diversifying the content to include, puzzles, competitions, articles that live beyond the page and using the website to showcase films, games and animations made by students. To help assist with the diversification, we will facilitate workshop events where contributors can collaborate with others over a weekend or evening. The workshops will include comic creation, writing in pairs and adult picture books. We would also like to increase the quality of the works published by giving feedback to all contributors with adequate time for them to adjust their work. WHY DO WE WANT TO DO THIS? We see Empire Times as a unique opportunity to expand our experiences by putting our editorial training from our Bachelor of Creative Arts (Creative Writng) to use. We are most excited about encouraging students, writers and artists to collaborate and assist them to get their work seen by a large audience.

Hello Flinders! I’m Jack Harrison and I’m running to be your National Union of Students Delegate. I study Law and International Studies and I’m the National Union of Student’s South Australian Welfare Officer and the President of the Social and Policy Studies Student Association and also a resident at the Deirdre Jordan Village. I believe that we need a strong Education Officer that works with all students at Flinders to make sure that we have accessible and fair education. I will work with the National Union of Students to ensure that we defeat the deregulation of university fees and that no student will have to pay $100,000 for their degree. To be a good National Union of Students’ delegate you need to be able to talk with all students in the university and engage them in conversation. You need to be a fierce advocate for students who is willing to stand up to the University and government. I don’t believe we can achieve this by simply shouting at students in courtyards. I am proud to stay that during my involvement with NUS this year I put

At university, I have been the Secretary of FUDGE and am currently the Vice President of the Flinders University School of Health Sciences Association and I participated in the Flinders E-mentoring program. In 2016, Activate and I will: • fight to ensure the campus bar is student run for the benefit of all key stakeholders • provide more support for clubs and associations in a variety of forms • ensure events run by FUSA and by all clubs/associations are safe, fun and are organised with students’ interests in mind • ensure there is a reliable and affordable textbook facility on campus • ensure services like welfare breakfasts and yoga sessions are continued and improved • continue our school association project, ensuring all students are represented and associations can organise events and merchandise and provide support and help for all students.

NUS Conference Delegates

Amy Hueppauff

Yiran Xu

I’m in my second year of studying a Bachelor of International Studies, a Bachelor of Arts, and a Diploma of Language. I am currently the NUS South Australian State Disabilities Officer. For the last year I have served on the Student Council as the Accessibility Officer. As FUSA’s Accessibility Officer I have been working closely with the NUS National Disabilities Officer to improve the lives of students living with disability. I am running for the position again as well as for a NUS Delegate Position. I would love the opportunity to represent our university and my fellow students at the NUS National Conference this year.

I, Yiran Xu hereby nominate for the national union of students conference delegate-2015. The reason I wish to be a national union of students conference delegate is that I want to devote myself to helping both international and domestic students to step outside their comfortable zone and have a deeper global awareness and understanding of other cultures. The awkward dinner conversations of me with my Australian host family, the sudden realisation that Australia is such a long way away on so many different levels. However, these are character

building experiences that bring out the best and worst in me and from which I learn so much. Therefore, I put my hands up to be national union of students conference delegate and I want to act as a bridge to connect international students with domestic students. I truly believe that global awareness and international collaboration during the formative years results in more rounded individuals, encouraging our students to see things from different perspectives and helping them to make informed decisions, acquiring transferable skills that will be useful to them and will remain with them for life.

Joshua Sunman My name is Josh Sunman and I’m hoping to be a National Union of Students Delegate for 2015. Having been involved with several NUS campaigns this year I have seen firsthand how important the work NUS does is for students. As an NUS delegate I would ensure that the voices of Flinders students have strong representation at a national level. Vote [1] Activate: Progressive - Accountable - Proven.

You can trust Fresh to make NUS work for you - members of our team hold senior positions within NUS and need your support to continue leading the fight against attacks on our education and welfare.

I am certain with your support that I can help make FUSA a stronger voice and more effective Union in the years to come.

Brodie May Hi, I’m Brodie May from STUDENT VOICE, and I’m running for the position of NUS Delegate, to stand up for students rights. The National Union of Students needs to be a fighting union, and for that it needs fighting, activist members. I’ve been active in the campaign against fee deregulation, which saw the Liberal’s plans to institute $100,000 degrees defeated not once, but twice. I’ve also been active in campaigns against the closures of Aboriginal communities, against Australia’s racist treatment of refugees, and for Flinders to institute a scholarship program for students of refugee backgrounds. Things for students get worse and worse, the cost of living continues to rise, and our university and others continue to raise the cost of studying via hidden costs not included in our fees. Parking, equipment, textbooks, etc. Many students are subject to racism, as government and media fearmongering about Muslims intensifies. These issues impact us locally at Flinders, and also impact students nationally. NUS needs to

Pg 44

NUS Conference Delegates tackle them head on, Student Voice activists are already the most active around these issues, and we’re the ones you need to represent you in our National Union. Vote 1 Brodie May for NUS Delegate, STUDENT VOICE will stand up for your rights within NUS and FUSA during 2016. Vote 2 Grace Hill NUS Delegate. Vote 3 James Vigus NUS Delegate.

Grace Hill Hi, I’m Grace Hill from STUDENT VOICE, and I’m running for the position of NUS Delegate, to represent Flinders students. I have a clear perspective on what our national union should be doing with its time and resources. So far we’ve seen a great national campaign against the Liberal government and their proposed deregulation of university fees, and I’m proud to have led that campaign at Flinders. I think this is one of the biggest issues facing students, and our union should be continuing a fighting campaign if we’re to defeat it again. Neither Turnbull or Shorten can be trusted to have student rights at heart, they look after their rich buddies, not us. We need activists in our union who will stand for

student rights regardless of who is in government. I think one of the many other issues the union should take up is racism. While some say that racism isn’t a student issue, any student who directly feels its impacts will tell you otherwise. This year we have seen racism from both Labor and Liberal, who have given a lead to groups like Reclaim Australia – who organised racist rallies around the country. This year I worked closely with other NUS activists to organise and lead the counter rally to Reclaim Australia, to organise campaigns for and alongside refugee students, and to participate in protest action against the closures of Aboriginal communities. It isn’t enough for individual activists and activist groups to do this though – we need the national union behind us, and that’s what I want to push for at the conference. Vote 1 Grace Hill for NUS Delegate, STUDENT VOICE will stand up for your rights within NUS and FUSA during 2016. Vote 2 Brodie May NUS Delegate. Vote 3 James Vigus NUS Delegate.

James Vigus As President of Flinders University Student Association (FUSA) this year, I understand the importance of having a strong and active student union. I’m pleased to report that in 2015 we saw off a second attempt by the Abbott government to introduce higher student course fees! I’m proud of our campaign. As a mature-aged Social Work masters student, I understand the demographic changes within Flinders. Many students face real cost-of-living pressures. Students and their families increasingly live below the poverty line. I believe it’s time our National Union of Students initiates a campaign against the proliferation of unpaid placements and internships that are a requirement of professional coursework. As a Social Work student I have witnessed first hand - in the people I assist - the hardship placed financially on stressed students and families. The government must provide supplement payments for all students whose course require placements/internships/practicum to alleviate the economic burden.

Pg 45

NUS Conference Delegates I am part of the STUDENT VOICE group. We are running for a number of NUS delegate positions and for positions within FUSA. We will continue to support an inclusive, active and creative FUSA. STUDENT VOICE is passionate about social justice. We’re appalled that Muslim students face a racist campaign from government and the media. The hysteria is supposed to distract us from unpopular cuts to education, health and welfare. International students also face enormous costs - paying the highest fees in the world. This must change! Whether you’re from Australia or overseas, postgrad/ undergrad, study externally, part-time or fulltime, STUDENT VOICE will stand up for your rights within NUS and FUSA during 2016. Vote 1 James Vigus NUS delegate. Vote 2 Brodie May NUS Delegate. Vote 3 Grace Hill NUS Delegate. For FUSA General member of FUSA Student council. Vote 1 Brodie May, Vote 2 Grace Hill.
