JUST RELEASED THE BEST NEW MUSIC REVIEWED

TXT: BRYAN SANCHEZ There’s definitely a strong presence behind music’s staying power. Albums find people at variously dissimilar stages during their respective lives. There’s only certainty when it comes to music’s relentless pace: it never ceases. That’s reason enough to celebrate, solely enough, if you ask me. These latest releases are all worth it; and fortunately, already available to enjoy.

WHITE RABBITS – MILK FAMOUS (TBD RECORDS) [INDIE ROCK, ROCK] On Milk Famous, White Rabbits definitely reach a sonic spectrum: if the production of Spoon is a supposed forefront, its confident tones beguile the music’s pressure. And although it recalls Gimme Fiction in spades, there’s always reward in progression. One thing is for sure, White Rabbits don’t sound as invigorated on Milk Famous, like they did on “While We Go Dancing,” perhaps; however, the focus isn’t so much on energy but on pace and mood.

THE MEN – OPEN YOUR HEART (SACRED BONES) [ROCK, HEAVY ROCK] The Men are able to take music and spit it out in relentless passion for something that ends up being both viscerally charged and inspired. With Open Your Heart, the strands of desolate aching, intensified anger and booming melodies combine for a roaring album that is easily, a tour de force. Flashing major chops, songcraft and songwriting that are tantalizingly driven, The Men make music sound excitingly alive on Open Your Heart.

SCUBA – PERSONALITY (HOT FLUSH RECORDINGS) [ELECTRONIC, DUBSTEP] There’s a trendy line people try to walk on with electronic music. How repetitive, how minimal, how techno-beat-driven is it, what the hell is dubstep anyways? British producer Paul Rose makes electronic music as Scuba and with Personality, waves of electronic treasure stream throughout. There’s an over-analyzing aspect in all of us; Personality blends veins of dubstep, techno and dance onto an album filled with diverse concepts abound, leaving nothing to mistake.

ANDREW BIRD – BREAK IT YOURSELF (MOM+POP RECORDS) [INDIE ROCK, ROCK/POP] It shouldn’t be much of a secret regarding the longevity Andrew Bird has as one of music’s most skillful musicians. With Break It Yourself Bird takes his well-known trademarks – strings in the form of violins and more, strikingly memorable melodies, and his singular whistling – and demonstrates them in way that is both sublime and refreshing. He doesn’t seem to be losing any of that aforementioned skill and why should he, Bird still sounds brilliant.

LEE FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS – FAITHFUL MAN (TRUTH & SOUL RECORDS) [SOUL, FUNK/R&B] With his backing band, The Expressions, Lee Fields has always been an enigmatic man throughout his tenure as one of soul’s current trailblazers. For a genre that has not risen above for quite some time, Fields amazes with a tried and true soul that is fantastically horn-drenched, string-laden and passionately rendered. With Faithful Man, he expresses new desires through words that are worn and wise; the whole time exploring new realms of soul in confident control.

THE MALLARD – YES ON BLOOD (CASTLE FACE RECORDS) [GARAGE ROCK, PSYCH ROCK] With a presence on Thee Oh Sees’ frontman John Dwyer’s label, The Mallard fuse a 60s rock overcast with a jangly, garage rock sound that is timeless in every conceivable way. It makes for an outstanding album that demands attention and deservedly so, gets it. The music on Yes on Blood sounds tremendously composed with the guitars slamming away and the vocals charged up; it’s as if The Mallard are alive and breathing in the 60s with every passing breath.

DANIEL ROSSEN – SILENT HOUR/GOLDEN MILE EP (WARP) [BAROQUE POP, INDIE ROCK] Dressing the five songs on this lush, ornate EP with strumming guitars and moments that recall The Beatles (“Silent Song”), Daniel Rossen presents an assured set of exceptional music. This short release finds the Grizzly Bear/Department of Eagles member showcasing stellar roots in rock and its folksy elements. While the songs maintain a kindred spirit within, the sonic scope reached is one of gorgeously great results: a wondrously subtle piece of music.

THE SHINS – PORT OF MORROW (COLUMBIA) [INDIE ROCK, ROCK/POP] If one wanted to drag this into a canonizing element, The Shins are easily one of indie rock’s early darlings. The music here is balanced within the band’s strong foundation in catchy hooks, enveloping melodies and chiming atmospheres. With music that could change your life, albums that relied on openheart lyrics, stunning guitars and James Mercer’s terrific voice, Port of Morrow finds a lean band with a true return to form: creating a dazzling album once again. 36 | THEFUSIONMAG.COM
