The art behind
metal album covers TEXT BY MATTHEW ON THE ROCKS / MATTHEWONTHEROCKS@LIVE.COM
YOU HAVE TO ADMIT METAL ALBUM COVER ART IS COOL. THERE’S THIS MAGNETIC QUALITY ABOUT THEM THAT ATTRACTS ITS FANS AND EVEN CURIOUS ON LOOKERS WHO MIGHT BE TOO SCARED TO LOOK BUT STILL DTO. WELL WHATEVER TICKLES YOUR PICKLE ABOUT METAL ALBUM COVER ART, FUSION MAGAZINE DECIDED TO COME UP WITH A LIST OF SOME OF THE BEST ARTISTS AND COVERS THAT ARE EXTREMELY FAVORED BY THE GODS OF METAL (NOTE: COVERS ARE IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER SO DON’T GET ALL HURT IF YOUR FAVORITE DESIGNER WASN’T NUMBER 1) IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER METAL ABLUM COVERS YOU LIKE, LET US KNOW!!
Jon Zig: Zig designed logos for many bands such as the Black Dahlia Murder. Interestingly enough, he also designed some mind blowing artwork for Suffocation, Deeds of Flesh, and Averse Sefira.
Joe Petagno: Petagno's resume is most impressive having done artwork for Marduk and rock and roll legends like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. However, he was mostly known for doing the early Motorhead album covers.
Chris Moyen: Chris Moyen was responsible for all of the old-school bestial black metal art for bands like Archgoat, Black Witchery, and Beherit. You've probably seen at least 50 of his drawings already and didn't even know it.
Kristian Wahlin (AKA Necrolord): illustrated some of the best metal albums ever, including In the Nightside Eclipse and Far Away From the Sun. Detailed wintertime landscapes full of mystique and grace; he set the bar for epic and breathtaking black metal album art.
Kris Verwimp: Artist behind the artwork for Absu' Tara and was responsible for the really cool updated Vital Remains logo.
Ed Repka: Best known for drawing covers of the Grim Reaper and if that weren't enough, Megadeth. A lot of Repka's work defines a time period with lots of zombies/skeletons drawn in a very 80's looking style.
Dan Seagrave: Provided gnarlylooking nightmare visions for some of the greats of technical death metal, like Suffocation and Gorguts.
Jos. A. Smith: Despite the fact that Smith wasn't really a cover designer, he happened to draw a metal icon staple: the Bathory goat (You should read the story behind that). More recently, one of his pieces was used for Averse Sefira's latest album.
Vince Locke: Designed cover art for Cannibal Corpse. The best thing about Cannibal Corpse covers are they're devilishly offensive!!
Derek Riggs: Creator of everyone's favorite metal mascot, Eddie. Also did artwork for Gamma Ray.

FUSION GALLERY FRANCELLA
Born on September 22, 1982, I have grown up in El Paso for pretty much all of my life. I grew up watching my mother sew, making & selling dolls. My interest in art came early on in my life but didn't really pick up until my high school days. I began to take art more seriously as something I wanted to continue into a career. Thanks to my mom, in addition to fine art, I have also always had craft art in my blood. At the age of 19 (Early 2002), I started my own business Smeared Lipstick Threads. It all began with me taking shirts and shredding them... turning them into corsets, skirts, dresses and also making handbags from scratch. I soon added handmade accessories but dropped doing the clothing soon after when everyone started doing it and it lost all creativity for me. In keeping my first love, art, still alive... I began my jewelry line of hand painted necklace/rings. In 2006 as a birthday present to myself, I purchased something I had long to pick up on as another art medium. A tattoo kit. I began teaching this new medium to myself and picked up on it quite easily. While I was teaching myself how to tattoo, I also was teaching painting as well as crocheting classes to children ranging in ages 4 to 10. As a self-taught tattoo artist, I built my portfolio and began tattooing professionally in early 2008. Today I am at a place where for many years I've strived to be. I am proud to be a local El Paso Chicana artist and am influenced by many things like my heritage, culture, music, movies, life experiences, etc. I love my job and I love my life. I am still tattooing professionally, I am still painting and showing my art at various art shows/exhibits, and am still continuing to build my name outside of this city. I still run my business of handmade oddities but have since dropped the "Threads" part of my business name and because I included tattoos to my repertoire I changed my business name to Smeared Lipstick Arts & Ink several years ago. I am also a 2009 and now 2010 Juicy Skin Calendar Girl in which local tattooed women help to raise money for charities such as Candle lighters Childhood Cancer Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House. I have an amazing husband who is also my best friend and we have a beautiful family. I am lucky to have amazing supportive people in my life and I will continue to grow as an artist until I take my last breath.
