US sociologist and Christian Tony Campolo believes in emphasising the negative side of technology because most of us are so focused on the positives. He talks to Caroline Harmon. What problems do you think technology is causing? The rate of change in technology is far too rapid for us to keep up. We are like dinosaurs, becoming incapable of adapting to the environment that technology is creating. It’s leaving people confused and many feel very inadequate. Technology puts people in a constant state of distraction. I was walking through an airport the other day and nobody was looking around at anybody. Everybody was looking at their cell phones and people were walking into each other! More importantly for Christians, it’s broken down a great deal of interaction. My son comments that if you have a vanload of young people going to a campout or some kind of social event, in the past they would sing, they would joke, they would interact, and fellowship was the larger part of what they were doing. Now they all sit in their van punching out text messages. Technology has made the communication of information very rapid. When the telegraph was first invented Theroux,

one of the US’ great philosophers, was at his hideout in Walden Pond having decided to take a year to be by himself. Right by the pond they were stringing up telegraph wires and he went out and asked what they were doing. It was explained to him that, once the wires were up, people in Maine would be able to communicate instantaneously with people in Florida 1300 miles away. Theroux asked: ‘What if the people in Maine have nothing to say to the people in Florida?’ What if we’re developing a perfect means of communication but losing the ability to have anything meaningful to say? That would be very sad. Does technology not provide us with anything positive? I’ve just finished writing a book with Shane Claiborne (The Red Letter Revolution, out now). At one point the editor listed about 400 places where he felt we needed to have footnotes to back up what we said. I shuddered; Shane just shrugged. Within about three hours we had it all done. That would have been impossible before the internet. Of course, access to knowledge kinda takes the fun out of arguing because as soon as you start to argue over something that was said, or some fact you heard – like how many sheep are there in New Zealand – you just look it up on the internet (there were 31.1 million in June 2011. Thanks Google! – Ed).

It is our inability to decide which technologies we want and which we don’t want that is really frightening. Mostly, instantaneous access to information is one of the great blessings of our time. I travel a great deal and I don’t have to take any books with me anymore because they are in my computer. However, I do think that too much communication takes place technologically. About three years ago the Harvard Business Review ran an article on why corporate executives shouldn’t utilise emails to communicate with people in their companies when there are decisions to be made. A great deal of communication does not take place in words. It involves looking at the body language of the other person, facial expression, the way in which pupils dilate. The article gave examples of Vice Presidents quitting their jobs after receiving emails from the CEO because they misunderstood the message from words alone. I believe that there is even a spiritual connection in face-to-face encounters. When we interpose the technological instrument something is lost and we end up with superficial communication; the spiritual connectedness that was so evident in the life of Jesus is gone. You talk in your book Following Jesus Without Embarrassing God about some of your encounters with the Amish, who reject a lot of technology. The future’s being controlled by the technology that’s available, not by our wills. As soon as some new technology is available we immediately adopt it. An Amish Bishop pointed out something important to me: ‘We’re not against televisions, we’re not against radios, in and of themselves. We just know

that these technologies change people. We always say that before you accept something into your life shouldn’t you know what it will do to you? When television was invented we watched how it impacted the lives of people who were not Amish. When we saw the effect it was having on their behaviours we decided that we wouldn’t accept it. We thought the cons outweighed the pros.’ It is our inability to decide which technologies we want and which we don’t want that is really frightening. We don’t have to become Amish but we do to need to decide what we do and don’t want rather than just accepting everything that comes along. What advice would you offer students about making best use of technology? Become intentional about face-to-face relationships and recognise that these can be easily squeezed out of your lives. Use the technology you can’t avoid very carefully. Take time to be aware of what’s going on around you, with nature and with relationships. Technology has a way of absorbing all our time, don’t let it.

Avoid the dangers of giving too much attention to being online at the expense of spending time with the people physically around you.

Next time you’re in a queue or on a bus or a train, look around you. Chances are most people you see will be staring at a smart phone, eBook or tablet device. Maybe you’ll be doing the same - I know I usually am! This is just one example of how the internet and digital technology are transforming the way we do life.

Cynics might shrug it off, but the birth of the internet, and the ever-smaller portable ways we interact with it, are as significant as the Industrial Revolution. For most students being ‘digitally on’ is totally normal and the idea of life without email, smart phones and social media is bizarre! I did my undergraduate degree over ten years ago when email was just becoming popular. I’m glad I’m back at uni as a PhD student right now so that I can experience an academic life that’s digitally wired. With the wealth of opportunities, information and connection that the Internet and social media provide how can you really harness them during your student days? And what pitfalls might you want to avoid?

1. Learning Although Wikipedia isn’t infallible it’s usually a great place to find out some basic facts about a topic. Online journals are great too and most universities pay for online subscriptions to key journals. Find out which are relevant to your subject and make the most of reading them as they’ll give you meaty content and will be quite expensive to access after you graduate. On the downside plagiarism is easier than ever before. You might think you’re re-wording something you’ve read online, but be sure that it’s genuinely your own work. Most coursework gets scanned for online matching and lots of students have found they’ve accidentally ripped off other people’s content without really meaning to. Never let yourself be tempted to hit ‘cut and paste’ from an online source – it won’t end well! 2. Community Most university societies and local churches have a Facebook page or a Twitter account, so you can easily find out details about meetings and build friendships online. That said, avoid the dangers of giving too much attention to being online at the expense of spending time with the people physically around you. Have you made an effort to get to know other students in the rooms on your hallway? It’s easy to just sit in front of your computer and ‘chat’ with other Christians all evening, but it’s important to meet people who are different to us and build relationship with those who are literally on our doorstep. 3. Publishing The ability to publish our thoughts to a global audience has never been easier. As you’re studying lots of information and forming your own opinions the Internet gives you the perfect place to start sharing these ideas. Blogging, Tweeting or Facebook statuses are a great way to get your ideas out there. You can be a catalyst in stirring up great discussions online about important subjects. Blogging should be a helpful compliment to you studying, not something which takes too much time and attention away from your degree. Don’t neglect official Uni work to blog. Essays (even if they seem boring!) have to come first.

University can be a hard place where we wonder who we are and how we fit. 4. Authenticity University can be a hard place where we wonder who we are and how we fit. It’s easy to want to promote an ‘ideal self’ that we think people will like and the temptation to try and be like everyone else is really powerful when you want to belong. Social media allows us to create a personality from selected photos and clever words. Ultimately, we have to choose whether we show the ‘real’ us, or a person that we’ve highly tailored and edited for our readers. Aim to use social media as authentically as possible. Don’t sacrifice who you really are for the sake of peer pressure; let your online self be the real you because who you are is amazing. Genuine people are the ones who make the deepest and longest friendships, as they feel trustworthy to others. The Power in Your Hands Technology is advancing at a mind-spinning rate. It’s hard to even imagine what being a digitally connected student will look like in 20 years time. There’s a lot of good and a lot of possible harm, but it’s an exciting time to be alive and a really exciting time to be a student. So plug in, ponder how you use technology, and harness the web to get yourself connected and make a difference in the world. The power to reach the globe is literally in your hands.

The Naked Truth Ian Henderson I love gadgets. They’re what student loans were made for. Incredibly, the Apple or Android device in your pocket contains more computing power than Neil Armstrong’s Apollo 11. Think about that next time you play Angry Birds! The internet has made it possible to see almost anything, anytime, anywhere. That’s a very good thing when it comes to researching an essay. But that same technology, and those same powerful gadgets, also put something much more harmful within easy reach of students – and it’s destroying lives.

The most popular porn website in the world gets 4.4 billion hits a month – only the likes of Facebook and Google get more.

12% of all websites and 35% of all internet downloads are pornographic.

Over 70% of men aged 18-24 visit porn sites at least once a month. Recent research among Christians suggests that we are just as tangled in the web of porn as anyone else.

Our society has a problem with porn, and I’ve decided I want to be part of the solution.

Telling the Naked Truth Naked Truth is a new Christian initiative that’s opening eyes and freeing lives from the destructive power of porn. We’re inspired by a bible passage in Proverbs 9, in which Folly entices a city with an invitation to eat and drink in her house: ‘Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!’ she purrs. But little do they know ‘that the dead are there, that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead.’ Like Folly, porn entices and deceives, promising pleasure and hiding the consequences. And millions of people are buying the lie. Proverbs 9 also speaks of a woman called Wisdom who has a better invitation: ‘Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways and you will live.’ Wisdom goes to the highest place in the city with her message – the one place where everyone is in earshot. Open Eyes, Free Lives Naked Truth is both public and personal. We aim to open eyes through the use of creative arts-driven street and viral campaigns. Naked Truth seeks to be mainstream, because, at some level, porn affects everyone.

Washing Machines and Broken Bulbs Pippa Elmes won’t let the old ruin the new When freshers arrive at university it’s not new technology that baffles them, it’s the old stuff. Washing machines in the laundry won’t start (the door’s not shut properly). Toasters give you electric shocks (don’t use a knife to get your toast out when it’s plugged in at the wall). Your lights are broken (the bulb has blown - buy a new one). The things that have always just happened in the background can trip us up when we step into independence.

Are you assuming that church will just happen when you get to university? Maybe you’re still around church stuff out of habit, your experience is that church is dull and lifeless, or worse, judgmental. Perhaps your faith started to disappear ages ago, or you’re not really sure if you ever believed in the first place. Or perhaps your experience of church has been brilliant. You’re used to it being great and are expecting to find that ready and waiting for you when you get to university. Either way, don’t let the old things hold you back at university. This is your opportunity for a new authenticity, rawness and honesty. A time for exploration, not for just carrying old assumptions into a new life. Explore God, church and community and don’t let prior disappointments or fixed expectations hold you back.

I’m considering cutting off my thumb. Not because it’s broken, not because I don’t like it… if truth be told, I’m actually quite attached to it. But I’m thinking maybe it’ll have to go. I’m finding that my first digit has taken on a life of its own recently. Since mobile phones became mini computers in our hands, my thumb has turned into a powerful tool of access and connection. Almost subconsciously it has learnt to swish-click-swish, and before you know it I have hundreds of photos of my mates before my eyes, Twitter has been informed of the bible passage I just read, and my emails have been

checked. All of this happens in the space of about three minutes (wifi-connection-depending) and the whole routine need never engage my brain as to why I’m doing it or what effect the swish-click-swish is having. My thumb calls the shots, in step with the habit I’ve acquired. It’s not that the world we now hold in our hands is a bad thing. There’s plenty to love and appreciate, plenty of improvements this access and communication brings. Facebook and Twitter spread testimonies and encouragements further than we can imagine, emergency prayer calls get out there in an instant; the network lights up in a chain-reaction of cyber community. Most of our students at church know what’s going on via an online wall of information. I have used a bible app many times when sharing a passage over coffee on

campus. One time, thanks to the joys of online bible translation on my phone, I even shared a psalm in Arabic with the Muslim woman sat next to me on the train. The swish-clickswish of our thumbs makes sharing easy, the excuse of ‘not having my bible on me’ no longer stands, and we have more outlets than ever to communicate our faith in Jesus. And yet, I’m considering cutting off my thumb. Why? Because if this is all so easy, access so instant, and our unthinking brains repeat the cycle of social networking, I wonder if we’ve cheapened ourselves into communicating anything and everything, saying so much and yet actually speaking of nothing. I wonder if we think we have shared our faith in Jesus with our friends because we updated the ‘religion’ category in our profile information. Have we

convinced ourselves we are bold in sharing our faith because of an overt mention of Jesus on a status at Easter? And tweeting the Bible is basically the same as studying it….right? I want to see students whose lives embody all the pages of identity, communication and connection you could ever seek to browse. With statuses of God’s faithfulness written all over their faces and Jesus on their lips, in real conversation with living breathing humans sat opposite them, eye contact and everything. What if we didn’t just tag the photos of us on a night out with our mates, but put down the camera, breathed-in the moment and remained fully present? What if we were more bold and real about our passion for Jesus when you meet us than you could get a glimpse of over any online site? What if all

the cyber versions of ourselves simply shone like neon signs towards us in the flesh, and Jesus our maker, as authentic arrows pointing towards the truth? So I’m thinking I’ll cut off my thumb. Reprogram my default away from text first, talk later, into opening my eyes and ears to what God is doing with me and through me where my two feet are, in that moment. Be fully present with the people in front of me. And if, as I live in that, I feel prompted to share the joy, to back-up my reality in engagement with the cyber community…. then so be it. But the swish click swish needs to be questioned before we assume it’s helpful. Our thumbs need to be called to account in case, without realising it, they’ve taken over the gritty, risky, exciting job Jesus gave us to share the good news with the people we meet. ‘For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of talk, but of power’ (1 Corinthians 4:20), and we carry the Holy Spirit in us, the power of God, not just a powerful machine in the palm of our hands. So, see you later thumb. I’ll get back to you when I have something to report, something that warrants telling the world behind the swish-click-swish a story of God moving in power in a friend’s life when I embodied good news to them, fully present, no phone necessary.

Jesus criticised the leaders of his day for not knowing how to interpret ‘the signs of the times’. (Matt 16:2-3). One of the signs of our own time is developments in technology. Facebook receives one trillion page views every month, but it is just the beginning of the digital age. By 2040 we may achieve fusion of our brains and the web. In the meantime, research shows that intense digital activity, for example playing computer games, is altering the structure of our brains. Analysis of the brains of London taxi drivers shows that the part of their brain which is used for memory and mapping is physically larger than in the brains of other people. What we do not know is the longer term impact on people who are growing up in a hyperintense digital world. A world where most social interaction is virtual, either with digital machines or with people who are not physically there. A Tribal People The more virtual our lives become, the more physical we want to be. Just look at the explosive growth of music festivals, the huge popularity of open air rock concerts and football matches, the vast crowds for the Queen’s Jubilee, and the growth of Christian events like Soul Survivor. It’s all about shared experience, breathing the same air, being present. Tribalism is the most powerful force on earth today. Tribalism is about belonging,

common language, culture, traditions. Every team is a tribe and every brand creates one. Every local community may contain many tribes. Every denomination is a tribe and so is every church home group. Unlike trends that come and go, tribalism is enduring. The biblical narrative is dominated by tribal themes: the descendants of Abraham; the tribes of Israel; the Jewish nation; through Jesus we, as non-descendants of Abraham, becoming grafted into God’s family. A vision that every tribe under heaven will one day be united in Christ. Humans are social creatures and we all, students included, have a God-given need to belong, and know who we belong to, written deep into our genetic code. Tribalism drives community but also can lead to sectarianism. As Student Workers our aim is to harness tribalism in the most positive way. Here’s how: T – TRUST In a world where there is a crisis of trust, building it is fundamental to all successful student work. That means being a point of consistent care and support in a rapidly changing and uncertain time; keeping our word, respecting confidence (1 Cor 4:2, Luke 16:12, 1 Tim 3:11-16). R – RESPECT The fastest way to win trust is to respect people as individuals, take them seriously, and believe in their future. Jesus demonstrated deep respect for people who had little self-respect, or who were despised by others. Those you treat with respect are more likely to do the same to you.

Tribalism is the most powerful force on earth today. I – INSIGHT Student workers need to be where students are at and right now that may mean on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, texting or whatever comes next. Tokenism is not enough. It means deep participation and engagement, making those worlds your own. That may take a lot of time, but there is absolutely no other way to maintain insight. This will also increase your scope of influence. At the same time, we must remember that the digital world cannot be an end in itself. We should pray for extra insight that God himself may provide to understand complex situations, for wisdom to know how to help and what to say (Prov 2:6). B – BELONGING Are you helping your students to belong, in your church community and in their communities on campus? Our greatest belonging is to Christ (Gal 5:24-26) and as we belong to him, we belong to each other (John 13:34-35).

Here is a challenge: spiritual leadership comes from within, from our own relationship with God and our own lifestyle. Personal example is the most powerful way of all to lead, (2 Tim 3:10) and one of the most powerful ways to lead, therefore, is by offering hospitality (1 Peter 4:9). Our calling as student workers is to interpret the signs of the times and to know what they mean to those we seek to influence. But our purpose is beyond today’s headlines or tomorrow’s trends: to enable each person we are with to take hold of their own future, to seize the destiny God has prepared for them since the foundation of the world.

A – ACCEPTANCE Our ethos should accepting, encouraging and affirming of each person as made in the image of God and deeply loved by him. That does not, though, mean approval of every action or attitude (Luke 5:32, John 8:1-11). L – LEADERSHIP Leadership comes from a common commitment to a shared vision: when others know where you are going and want to journey with you. However, spiritual leadership is more than that: our aim is to draw people deeper into an understanding of who Jesus is, and into

Luke Smith explores the tension between style and content in our churches

‘You might think you’ve seen polished edges but you haven’t seen anything like these machine-polished beveled edges. They take polishing to a new plane of excitement.’ This was the gist of the keynote presentation for the much awaited iPhone 5 that recently captivated audiences worldwide.

I was part of the seething masses due for an upgrade and pretending to be indifferent. Unsurprisingly, I wasn’t alone in my disappointment at the lack of new features on the phone. What does it actually do differently? There are new maps which don’t work, and it is longer. It also has extraordinarily polished beveled edges. What a relief, because that is certainly what I look for in a phone! We see this uber-marketing behaviour all around us in our culture and, worse, we see it working. People buy the iPhone 5 in all its shiny cornered glory. Brand has become everything.

It is irritatingly simple. People come to church when we invite them to come to church. My church is guilty of being infiltrated by this mindset and allowing it to change the way in which we think our church will grow. In looking to attract students, we are keen to have a great logo, slick website, interesting Facebook page and active twitter account. We believe that when students stumble across us they will think to themselves, ‘Me oh my, what a professional church! I must begin attending every Sunday because I want to be as cool as them.’ Of course, no one thinks this. I realise there is nothing wrong with having good logos or engaging with social media well, but we have become too reliant on these things in hoping they will bring people into church.

Jesus had a few challenging things to say about how we relate to other people that are worth remembering in light of this. He was almost the un-spin doctor. He spoke truth even when it was unpopular. In John 6:60-70 we read about many of his own followers deserting him because his teaching wasn’t comfortable to hear. Jesus allowed them to go, he didn’t need to be popular. In fact, in Matthew 7:13 he says that hardly anyone will really take the difficult path of the gospel. Most people want an easy option - but it is a mirage! Do we speak the difficult truth to the students in our towns or settle for a fluffier message?

People with integrity who will share their lives and spend themselves on others. The cutting edge of the church wields the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. When we are really honest we know how our churches will grow, we just don’t like it. Churches grow when we unashamedly share our faith through words, works and wonders. It is irritatingly simple. People come to church when we invite them to come to church. We might prefer it if we could win people into the Kingdom through advertising, but we can’t. Kingdom growth has a cost: our reputation, our finances and possibly our lives, which can seem like too big a price. But in the still, quiet moment when we are secure in our relationship with Father God, we know it’s all worth it. So let’s get out there! Jesus said, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’ (Luke 9:23) His listeners knew that the cross was a symbol of public embarrassment and humiliation. If we want to really follow Jesus we need to be willing to be publicly humiliated and embarrassed. Are we?

Anthony Delaney is Team Leader at Ivy Manchester Church. He explains why his church connects to Fusion. Students in Manchester don’t connect to church easily because there’s too many other things going on! Amidst that confusion Fusion helps them to find us by being an approachable, connected network through which students can get prepared and plugged in. We love that there is more focus on helping people find the right church for them rather than one particular ‘student church’. We also value that Fusion don’t put themselves in ‘control’, instead just channeling people towards churches, so it’s up to us to then raise our game to be worth coming to (and coming back to)! Fusion are truly missional, they remind us to keep focused on those who don’t yet know

Jesus. A strategy based around ‘we give free food’ to attract Christian students is doomed. However, if you continually try to connect with all students, especially those who are far away from God, Christians who are not just consumers will turn up as well because they’ll want to be part of that adventure. Some missional movements do the stuff and ask you for money so they can keep doing it themselves. Fusion aren’t like that. They help you to do the mission. We are committed to working with them to pioneer the church into the student world.

Student Alpha is a seven week course introducing people to the Christian faith. Over the last ten years Student Alpha has proved to be one of the most effective tools for university students and young adults to explore the Christian faith, with over 600 courses now running worldwide. Its simple format has seen courses run everywhere from churches and halls, to McDonalds restaurants, curry houses and night clubs! Smart phones, apps and websites have changed how we think and how we do life. Rhythms is a great way to use technology to actively engage with the world through regular, small actions that result in lasting change. It is a unique way to engage in discipleship and invest in our character. It responds to the overwhelming desire of our generation to be active do-ers, restorers and changers and helps us turn our singing and talking about justice into action. The Rhythms website and app is designed to help us take our ordinary, technology-filled lives and use them for the glory of God and the building of His Kingdom worldwide. It gives us a whole bunch of ideas of small things that we could do differently in order to contribute to changing the world. From going barefoot for a day or writing a thank you letter to a mate who has helped you out, to donating money to charity by text, it helps us use technology to invest in our discipleship. And because it changes us and our character, it changes the world. We are part of a fast-paced technology-filled world which presents countless opportunities for us to be bringers of change. Rhythms calls a generation to use the influence they have at their fingertips to become deep disciples who bravely and purposefully pursue justice every day. It calls for a generation who will not be timid in their passion to become closer followers of Jesus and who invest in small, regular actions in order to become more like Him.

A Year of Change and Impact What a difference a year makes! Back in September 2011 our head office moved to Loughborough after 13 years in Chichester and a new Fusion office was also established out of St Michael le Belfrey, York. We said tearful goodbyes to three longstanding team members and hello to four new ones. The average age of the team decreased from 37 to 26. We started the year very skint and full of hope. The new team quickly found their feet and it turned out to be a remarkable year. The 90 Challenge helped raise nearly £18k to fund Student Linkup. 14 people attempted 90 Challenges, doing something (usually a little bit crazy) to help cover the cost of one of the 90 days of Student Linkup. 454 people gave generously to this cause and 35 people gave their time to linking up new students at summer events. Together they spent nearly 500 hours talking to people about starting uni. 2150 students were linked to churches in every university town and city in the UK. Over 1700 attended student seminars and were prepared for the university experience.

Fusion gathered 275 student workers this year through Student Work Training and the number of churches that are part of Fusion Church Connection grew from 558 to 755. Collectively they disciple around 13,000 students. The Fusion Team made over 400 visits to local churches to consult, equip, train and strengthen their work with students and to inspire action for student mission through the loveyouruni project. Fusion are strengthened by your support and ask for your continued prayers, encouragement and financial sacrifice as we work to see the transforming Gospel of Jesus Christ impact students and the universities, cities and future work places they inhabit.
