THIS IS SPARTA... AGAIN!
This epic sequel to 300 follows the Rise Of An Empire...
W
hen 300 hit cinema screens in 2006, audiences were blown away by its stylised visuals, gory battle scenes and its depiction of the warrior race known as the Spartans, led by their king Leonidas (Gerard Butler). Sadly, 300 didn't end too well for Leonidas and his men, as they were hopelessly outnumbered by the forces of Persian King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). Now we finally get to find out what happens next... Based on Xerxes, the followup book by author Frank Miller, 300: Rise Of An Empire picks up with the Persian army marching south to threaten some of Greece’s major cities, including Athens. Another battle is inevitable, and this time it looks as though it will take place on the sea.

Santoro reprises his role as the flamboyant and deadly Xerxes, with Australian actor Sullivan Stapleton the new thorn in his side as admiral Themistocles, the man in charge of the fleet sent to stop him. To do this he must unite with Sparta – but can these two usually opposed forces really defeat the massive Persian force? Featuring many members of the original 300 cast including Lena Headey and David Wenham, as well as a screenplay by original director Zack Snyder, 300: Rise Of An Empire contains just as much style as its predecessor and looks set to be equally as thrilling.

Did You Know? Zack Snyder was originally slated to write and direct 300: Rise Of An Empire, but had to sidestep directing it so that he could work on Man Of Steel. He still produced the film.

Event: The Battle Of Rorke’s Drift (1879)
Faced with 4,000 Zulu warriors, 150 British soldiers fought them off in a desperate battle that went down in history. Michael Caine kept a stiff upper lip in the film version, which spawned a prequel, Zulu Dawn.

Much Ado About Nothing Terry Gilliam’s puzzler The Zero Theorem poses a “noughty” problem... erry Gilliam is having a good year: not only is he due to reunite with his Monty Python pals in a series of gigs at London’s O2 Arena, he’s also releasing his first film since 2009’s The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus. The Zero Theorem opens on 14 March and stars Christoph Waltz as a hacker wracked with existential questions about the number zero. Think Gilliam’s Brazil crossed with Inception, perhaps. Gilliam only took on the project after some bad luck: “I was working on Don Quixote for a year until everything fell apart,” he explains. “Suddenly I didn’t have any work and I hadn’t done a film in three years. I said, ‘I’ve got to go to work!’” The Zero Theorem came along just in time. After this, Gilliam is hoping to get his infamously delayed Don Quixote off the ground after endless complications – it’ll be his seventh attempt. Good luck...

Middle-earth Master The Hobbit author JRR Tolkien is to be the subject of a new biopic...
he films based on his books have earned a whopping $4 billion over the last decade, and that’s not including the tally from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug. Add to this countless copies of his novels on bookshelves across the world and it’s clear that Professor JRR Tolkien has made a huge impact on our lives by creating Middleearth and all its citizens. With this in mind, Fox Searchlight are now developing a film based on Tolkien’s life. Written by David Gleeson and set during his time as a soldier in WWI and his life at Oxford University, the film will also feature Tolkien’s friend CS Lewis (author of the Narnia books). There’s no release date as yet, but in the meantime the third Hobbit film, There And Back Again, is released on 19 December.

urassic World is a go! After 12 years in dinosaur limbo and more failed attempts to revive it than we can count, the next film in the massively successful franchise is scheduled for release on 12 June 2015. To be directed by Safety Not Guaranteed’s Colin Trevorrow, rumour has it that its leads have
been cast: Chris Pratt, star of the forthcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy, is said to be signing up for the lead role alongside Bryce Dallas Howard and Jake Johnson. Most importantly, though, this won’t be a brandnew reboot of the original 1993 film, a fear that had been niggling fans around the world. “Reboot is a strong word,”
Trevorrow told his Twitter followers. “This is a new sci-fi terror adventure set 22 years after the horrific events of Jurassic Park.” Interesting words, those: “terror adventure”. Does this mean the T-rex will be back, or will there be an even scarier dinosaur this time? Hurry up and make it, guys, so we can find out!

Need For Speed gets set to roar onto our screens... Racing is an art,” says Michael Keaton’s character sagely during one scene in Need For Speed. “But racing with passion... that’s high art.” He makes a good point. Since the Fast And Furious franchise turned car racing into a hyperreal sport beloved of cinema audiences around the world, every new film featuring a car chase has had to raise its game. He’s a driver like no other, willing to risk his life in a cross-country race despite having a bounty of millions of dollars on his head. As the races pile up, tragedies mingle with victories and Tobey must decide whether winning really is worth his life. Co-starring Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots and Dakota Johnson, Need For Speed opens on 14 March.
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are now working on a film based on the DC Comics title Sleeper, about a man who can absorb pain and pass it onto others... Henry Cavill has reacted to the casting of Affleck to play Batman opposite his Superman with delight: “I’m sure he’ll be fantastic,” says the actor. Gal Gadot has also been cast as Wonder Woman in their forthcoming team-up, Batman Vs Superman. The film opens on 17 July 2015... It looks as though 2015 will be an amazing year for superhero films in general, with big-name titles including The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, The Fantastic Four (a new reboot) and Ant-Man, starring Michael Douglas, all on the way.

For their next ’toon trick, DreamWorks Animation are bringing Mr Peabody & Sherman to the big screen. Can the heroic duo fix the past and save the future? hough they were at the height of their popularity in America in the ’60s and ’70s, and UK audiences might only know them through pop culture references (they’ve been spoofed on such shows as The Simpsons), DreamWorks Animation are betting that we’re still ready to be charmed by a whistle-stop trip through time with Mr Peabody and Sherman. Created by Jay Ward in the late ’50s as small cartoon shorts, they’re now hitting cinemas in a huge animated adventure in 3D! In the film we’re introduced to Mr Peabody, the world’s smartest canine – a cultured hero of the science world with many high-powered friends – who lives in a posh high-rise 14 odeon.co.uk
with adopted son Sherman. So great is Peabody’s genius that he’s even cracked time travel, something that leads to wild adventures when Sherman accidentally misuses the device (known as the WABAC machine) to impress a classmate named Penny. Cue a mad dash across the timespace continuum in which we meet such historical figures as Marie Antoinette and Leonardo Da Vinci – all the while proving that though Peabody might boast a massive intellect, he still has something to learn about being a parent! Other characters from Ward’s shows, including superhero duo Rocky and
Bullwinkle and dim but dashing Canadian Mountie Dudley Do-Right, have been brought to life either as pure live-action or with a combo of human actors and CG. But Peabody director Rob Minkoff, no stranger to blending techniques after making two Stuart Little films, decided to go purely animated this time, albeit with the best 3D work that the DreamWorks team could muster. “It was actually my idea to do an animated film,” he told Crave Online. “I’m not sure why they would’ve shied away. It was just sort of the fashion. When it first came to me, actually, I think there was some presumption that it might be done in live-action, and then I said I didn’t really want to do it that way because they

were such characters grounded in animation and I really felt like that would be the best way to bring them back to life.” One of the reasons Minkoff really wanted to tackle the characters was the chance to play with time travel, in which he sees endless opportunities for an entertaining film. “I think from the very earliest conversation about the movie, we had the idea of going to more than one location,” Minkoff says. “We’re looking at different kinds of time travel movies. Obviously, Back To The Future sort of goes to one place and a lot of them do, but we really wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to do a bit of a tour, travelogue, to various different times and places.” 16 odeon.co.uk
The duo prepare to travel!
And finding the right destinations – including Ancient Egypt and the French Revolution – was the key. “I think we were always just trying to figure out what would be the right places, how to tell the story. There are obviously two things going on. There’s the travel and the adventure of all of that, but really the primary story is between the characters, between Peabody and Sherman and their developing relationship.” As anyone who has ever watched Back To The Future or Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure can tell you, time travel brings with it a particular set of challenges: if you tinker with history, bad things can happen. Despite Peabody & Sherman being pitched
as a film the whole family can enjoy without suffering a headache trying to figure all the time paradoxes out, Minkoff explains that the film

will explore some of those ideas. “We do have some of that in the film, without giving too much away. We have a bit of the idea that
Modern Family star Ty Burrell was picked to bring Peabody’s voice to life, and he admits it was a challenge. “I don’t think I’ve ever even played a genius human,” he laughs. “This is the greatest stretch of my career, and it has nothing to do with playing a dog. I’m so used to trying to make stupid jokes. But the jokes are around this character. We did make Peabody less aware that his frequent puns are terrible. That’s his Achilles heel. Mr Peabody does everything well... except be funny!”
Introducing the time-travelling duo... Television audiences got their first look at time-travelling genius dog Mr Peabody and his adopted son Sherman in 1959, when they appeared as a featured segment on animator Jay Ward’s Rocky And His Friends (better known as The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show). The short cartoons – then called Peabody’s Improbable History – were designed to teach kids about historical events while making them entertaining (think a blend of Bill & Ted and Horrible Histories). Each week, the duo would journey through time via their WABAC machine and meet people such as Sir Walter Raleigh, Lord Nelson, Christopher Columbus and even fictional characters such as Robinson Crusoe. An amazing 91 segments were eventually produced, with Bill Scott providing Mr Peabody’s vocals and Walter Tetley as the voice of Sherman.

ugust 2012: after the wettest summer in donkey’s years, the sun is finally shining when ODEON Magazine visits the set of new comedy Cuban Fury. Not that this matters to the cast and crew, mind you; they’re filming a huge dance sequence in a dark, claustrophobic nightclub underneath some railway arches in Battersea. The call sheet we’re given as we walk into the club tells us that there are 120 extras crammed into the building this day, many of them professional salsa dancers. They wander around between takes wearing glittery costumes, chatting and drinking coffee, but the minute director James Griffiths yells “Action!” they became a perfectly choreographed crowd showing off the kind of moves most of us can only imagine being able to do. It’s impressive, although perhaps not as impressive as the sight of Nick Frost joining in... a man who only started salsa-dancing a few months
beforehand, but who’s already mastered the moves. “Nick was afraid of dancing!” laughs Griffiths. “What a challenge to set himself! That’s another film in itself – the journey for him, where we got him to the point of going on screen for the first time, dancing in front of 400 people. It was a huge challenge.”
Learning to salsa
Frost plays Bruce Garrett, who as a child was a potential world champion dancer before a terrible incident turned him off dance floors forever. “We meet him 24 years later working as a draughtsman,” says Frost, sitting down to chat with us between takes. “He’s downtrodden by Chris O’Dowd’s character, Drew, who’s essentially a bully. The spark has gone from his life.” But Bruce’s world is shaken up by the arrival of a new boss. “Once he meets Rashida Jones’s character, Julia, it ignites him again. He follows her into this pub and as he walks through the door and she’s dancing salsa and that’s fanatical about film 21

it.” He clicks his fingers. “That’s the catalyst.” Bruce finds himself entering the cut-throat world of salsadancing again, this time accompanied by friend Bejan (Kayvan Novak) and teased by dance master Ron (Ian McShane). But Frost is the first to admit that throwing shapes on the dance floor was a struggle for him... “I don’t like dancing. I’ve never really been a dancer, although secretly I always enjoyed it. I think people are watching me clump around the dance floor, so this was essentially like aversion therapy.” He chuckles. “Really expensive aversion therapy!” Once he’d come up with the idea and committed to the project, Frost practised dancing for six hours a day, seven days a week for months. He also went on a special diet. “A lot of steak, which is a dream for me,” he grins. “I’ve been prescribed sirloin, taken with water twice a day. Despite my heavy weight, they’re treating me like an athlete.” 22 odeon.co.uk
Dance-off
The result is impressive: we watch as Frost performs some moves with partner Gloria, played by professional dancer/ teacher Susana Montero from Spain. Later, McShane comes over and insults Frost’s character so forcefully that our ears burn. It’s hard to keep a straight face – but then again, that’s the point. Cuban Fury is determined to bring on the chuckles, not least in the film’s funniest setpiece: an epic dancestyle fight in a car park between Bruce and O’Dowd’s Drew. “We had a real laugh doing it,” remembers Griffiths. “In terms of what they deliver, what they bring to it in terms of comedy when it’s essentially an action sequence, is delightful. We worked with Chad Allen, who is Jackie Chan’s fight choreographer.” The biggest group dance scenes, however, were filmed in a nightclub in Camden – and it was hard work. “When we were in Koko, that was seven days

doing 12 hours a day, dancing,” says Frost, wincing. “We had six days to get three massive dance sequences with a 400-odd crowd,” adds Griffiths. “It was tricky!” The action was helped, however, by the dancing talent assembled for the film. “We’ve got a lot of dancers from Cuba, obviously. All over Europe. Madrid, Italy… The people who actually brought salsa to the UK in the ’70s and ’80s are here. If you’re a salsa fan, you’ll appreciate that we’ve pulled those people together. You’ll recognise those faces!” Frost is quick to sum up why salsa is so important. “It’s a mating ritual. It’s a man showing off to a woman: ‘Look what I can do.’” He’s also happy to have learnt how to do it himself; all the hard work was worth it. “It will never leave me, this thing that has been awoken,” he laughs. “I have awoken a sleeping salsa giant!”

n 2009 an art expert by the name of Robert M Edsel published a book called The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves And The Greatest Treasure Hunt In History. It was a tribute to the men and women who took part in this real-life “treasure hunt” during World War Two: a determined operation to prevent the Nazis from wiping some of the world’s 24 odeon.co.uk
most wonderful artworks off the face of the planet. Intrigued by the story, George Clooney and his producing partner Grant Heslov have adapted the book into this stunning new film, with Clooney directing and starring along with some of the best names working in the business today. The Monuments Men tells the story of a select group of museum curators, directors and art historians
who were determined to avoid the destruction of 1,000 years of culture as the Third Reich fell. They travelled across Europe saving precious masterpieces at great risk to their own lives. Co-starring everybody from The Artist’s Jean Dujardin to Bill Murray, The Monuments Men is not only a testament to their bravery – it’s also a fascinating escapade which will thrill audiences everywhere!

Bringing to life the LEGO worlds that kids have been playing with since they first went on sale back in 1949 (and, let’s face it, adults too), this daft comedy looks set to be one of the most bonkers films of 2014! The LEGO Movie is the story of the apparently ordinary Emmet (voiced by Parks & Recreation star Chris Pratt) as he discovers that he has a destiny as the “Chosen One”. To fulfill an important prophecy, he must save his LEGO pals from the ruthless plans of President Business (Will Ferrell), who wants to destroy their world. Joined on his mission by the intriguing Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) and given guidance by the Gandalf-like wizard Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman), Emmet soon finds he’s in over his head – and hilarity ensues! Brought to us by the directors of Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street, you know you’re in good hands with this colourful family tale. THE INVISIBLE WOMAN 12A RELEASED 7 FEBRUARY DIRECTOR Ralph Fiennes STARRING Ralph Fiennes, Felicity Jones, Michelle Fairley, Kristin Scott Thomas
Don’t be fooled by the title: this isn’t a fantasy adventure riffing on HG Wells’ classic story The Invisible Man. Instead it focuses on another hugely famous 19th-century author, Charles Dickens. Played by Ralph Fiennes, who also directs, Dickens was so popular during his career that he makes the fuss around JK Rowling today look like a storm in a teacup; he truly was a superstar of his time. Ironically, however, despite writing morality tales that have seeped into our consciousness over the centuries, he wasn’t quite as moral himself: he had a mistress, Nelly (Felicity Jones) and his secret affair with her lasted a lifetime. The Invisible Woman – a name you could use for Nelly herself, given her position – tells her story and offers fresh insight into the mind of Dickens, portrayed by Fiennes to critical acclaim. The result is a fascinating tale of a forbidden, yet allconsuming, love.

ROBOCOP TBC RELEASED 7 FEBRUARY
DIRECTOR José Padilha STARRING Joel Kinnaman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman
Joel Kinnaman stars in this action-packed sci-fi drama inspired by the classic 1987 film of the same name. As he hovers between life and death, giant corporation OmniCorp makes the decision to turn him into a cyborg: half-human, half-machine. By doing so, they’ve created an almost invincible police officer who can patrol the streets under a new name... RoboCop. But what of the man inside the armour? Is Alex Murphy still Alex Murphy, or is he nothing more than a machine now? Does he have free will? What does he want? And who are the good guys in this peculiar situation?
