x-Men: days of future past Our favourite multi-coloured mutants are reunited for a fantastic time-travelling adventure...

A

fter the success of the original X-Men films (X-Men, X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand), two Wolverine spin-offs (X-Men Origins: Wolverine and last year’s The Wolverine) plus 2011’s prequel, X-Men: First Class, you’d think we’d be fed up of mutants by now. But no, far from it! The buzz is huge for this newest film in the franchise, which picks up

a while after First Class and features our super-powered heroes travelling back in time to change history for the better. Starring both old and young versions of many mutants (including Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart as Professor X), X-Men: Days Of Future Past hits cinemas with a bang on 22 May!

Remember her? Underneath all that blue makeup is none other than current Hollywood darling Jennifer Lawrence, who’s stamped her own mark on the character of Mystique, aka Raven Darkholme, since X-Men: First Class. Played by Rebecca Romijn in the first three X-Men films, Lawrence has brought us new depths as the younger version of the shapeshifting character.

Did You Know? With this film, Hugh Jackman will have played claw-knuckled Wolverine seven times – and is also the only actor to have appeared in all the X-Men films to date.

Snippets of information about the film you should be aware of before you sit down to watch it...

Magneto (Michael Fassbender) has been getting up to some naughty things since First Class... including a possible hand in the assassination of JFK.

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is the one character who will look the same in both past and present storylines, as his character doesn’t age like everybody else. Game Of Thrones star Peter Dinklage plays Bolivar Trask, a mutant-hating scientist responsible for a huge new threat to the X-Men and all people possessing an “X-gene” to make them different from other humans.

Tom Cruise leaps into action!

Beyond Twilight Former vampire Kellan Lutz is hitting the big time this year... Fans of Twilight star Kellan Lutz will be thrilled to hear that he’s headlining two big films this year. The Legend Of Hercules (28 March) sees him as the mighty muscle-man; then we’ll get to see him in cartoon form in Tarzan 3D (out 2 May), a fun retelling of the famous tale in which he plays the ape-man himself. And finally, on 15 August Lutz also joins the legendary ensemble cast in actionand explosion-fest The Expendables 3!

edge of tomorrow

Tom Cruise’s next epic is an explosive sci-fi thriller that will boggle your mind! Live. Die. Repeat.” So goes the enticing tagline for Edge Of Tomorrow, a new sciencefiction drama set to drop our jaws with its brainbending twists and turns. Starring Tom Cruise as soldier Lt Colonel Bill Cage, the film focuses on what happens when he finds himself reliving the same battle over and over again, Groundhog Day-style, only each day ends with a devastating loss for his army... and even more alarming, his own death! 8

odeon.co.uk

As Cage struggles to break out of the time loop, he encounters fellow soldier Rita (Emily Blunt): someone who’s experienced the same problem herself, and the only person who can help him to – quite literally – save the day. Directed by The Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman and based on the acclaimed novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, Edge Of Tomorrow promises to keep us all guessing when it’s released on 30 May.

airy tale villains tend to be a pretty simple bunch: they’re bad because they’re bad, end of story, and we’ve come to accept that. It’s a rare film that decides to delve deeper in the psyche of one of these grim bad guys, and Maleficent promises to be a fascinating example. Starring Angelina Jolie as the titular evil Queen, the film follows her life from childhood to her reign over a kingdom who live in fear of her.

She wasn’t always evil, however: as a child she was pure and good, but after a terrible betrayal her heart was hardened. Maleficent hates the young Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) and thus the circumstances are born to create a sleeping curse and one of the most famous fairy tales in history. Packed with stunning FX, shot in juicy 3D and boasting a chilling performance from Jolie, Maleficent will be a fantasy to remember!

“I’m all woman.” A pregnant Arnie explains who he is in junior.

Sticky Business The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 3D sees Peter Parker facing some truly frightening new foes…

S

pider-Man is in for the greatest battle of his life,” promises Marc Webb of The Amazing SpiderMan 2. The director has returned to pick up the reins (or cobwebs, if you prefer…) for the superhero’s second Amazing cinema outing. And yet, funnily enough, this was the film few people saw coming when the Spider-Man franchise was rebooted in 2012. Released a mere five years after Spider-Man 3 – the last film in the original trilogy starring Tobey Maguire – The Amazing Spider-Man was seen by many naysayers as unnecessary, unwanted and unwatchable. When it was announced that relatively unknown British actor Andrew 12 odeon.co.uk

Garfield would be playing Peter Parker, they grew even grumpier. But, as we all know now, they were proved wrong. The Amazing Spider-Man was a fresh, energetic update which went on to gross a generous $752 million worldwide... Is there anyone out there that doesn’t know how Peter gets his powers? The first film quickly spins through the origin: sneaking into Oscorp (the big-business laboratory where his father used to work), he gets bitten by a genetically modified spider. Soon he discovers that he’s developed arachnid-like abilities. He can stick to walls, his agility is

enhanced and his strength is magnified to incredible levels. When his Uncle Ben is killed in an incident that Peter could have prevented, Spider-Man, protector of the innocent and perpetual irritant to supervillains everywhere, is born. So that’s the origin story out of the way – now’s the time to move our web-slinging wonder onto other things! “We begin the film with Spider-Man loving being Spider-Man,” Webb continues. “He’s smooth, having fun and the best crime-fighter the world has ever seen. He’s got his webs, he’s got his agility and he’s got his wit. But soon, Peter will have to face a foe more powerful than he can imagine…” The foe in question is the mighty Electro (Jamie Foxx), a blue-skinned mutant who, 14 odeon.co.uk

Rather than finding himself sticking to walls, however, he discovers he can sling electricity around at will. Also of interest is Peter’s friend Harry Osborn: son of the dangerous Norman, heir to Oscorp and played by Chronicle star Dane DeHaan. “When you first meet Harry he’s just graduated from high school, and he has to come back to New York to help deal with Oscorp, and its legacy, and his father,” says DeHaan. “He also sees Peter Parker for the first time in a long time; they were childhood friends.” While it’s nice to see Peter bonding with an old pal, the machinations Not only are two more sequels on the of Oscorp and the way (The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4), secrets they must Sony have also confirmed that there keep from each other will be two big-screen spin-offs make their relationship featuring villains from the series. tricky. “It’s a very A film tracing the origins of alien complicated storyline!” weirdo Venom has been announced, agrees DeHaan. as well as one chronicling the antics Peter’s relationship of the Sinister Six: a gang of bad with Gwen Stacy (Emma guys containing a few members Stone) is also complicated popping up in The Amazing Spiderin this film – mainly Man 2. That’s what happens to Carly (Cameron Diaz) when she starts dating Mark (played by Game Of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). He seems absolutely perfect: gorgeous, successful, funny, sweet – everything Carly is looking for in a guy. But just when she’s starting to really fall for him, disaster strikes. As their relationship gets closer – usually with the aid of lots of alcohol, giggling and complaining about Mark – they discover that they’re not alone. Mark has yet another woman on the side, this time the young and attractive Amber (Kate Upton). So he’s not just cheating on his wife, he’s cheating on his mistress as well! Amber is just as annoyed to hear about her boyfriend’s naughtiness, and the three women realise that something needs to be done about Mark’s philandering. Eric (Jack O’Connell, bestknown for his acclaimed role in Channel 4 show Skins) is a violent, troubled teenager who is sent to an adult prison, where he struggles to fit in. Coincidentally, he discovers

that his father Nev (Ben Mendelsohn) is in the same jail. Clearly Nev hasn’t been the best role model for his son, but can he save him from a future spent making the same mistakes? And can father and son reconnect in such extreme conditions? Starred Up is a gritty, compelling British drama with performances to remember.

The aftermath of two couples hooking up after a night out is explored in this witty romantic comedy. Starring comedian Kevin Hart, this is a modern, intelligent remake of the 1986 film starring Demi Moore.

Thoughtful sci-fi as fatally wounded Will (Johnny Depp) lives on when his consciousness is downloaded into a computer. This is a smart thriller that poses important questions about humanity.

Say ‘squeeze’! Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romijn hug it out at the premiere of X-Men 2... inding the clock back to 24 April 2003, we have a great shot of a startlingly youthful-looking Hugh Jackman getting all cuddly-wuddly with his co-star Rebecca Romijn. (More shocking still is the fact that they appear to share the same hairstylist...) This was only the second time Jackman had played the mighty mutant Wolverine, but spin forward to today and it’s nearly time to see him glue on the claws and sideburns for his seventh outing as him in X-Men: Days Of Future Past (out 22 May).
