When we’re creating art, it’s impossible to work in a vacuum. We always take inspiration from things around us, whether it’s our environment, technology, politics, history, or the work of previous masters of art. And this issue, we’ll be focusing on the latter. Here are some of our favourite pictures that caught our attention recently, from some of the world’s most exciting artists and designers out there.
From the lighting and shading in the water to the way the phone’s made from brick and tile, this is an incredibly imaginative and well-executed composition. It was awarded with a Photography showcase badge on Behance.

This series of miniature dioramas in the shape of smartphones was commissioned to show the possibilities of Three Mobile’s unlimited data service. Created using CG and stock photography, the series shows unlimited travel, streaming live sport and unlimited music streaming.

This piece was made in Cinema 4D using textures created in Photoshop. I created a complex stripe pattern with rectangles and used Photoshop’s colour correction tools to give it a colour palette.
We love how playful Aditya’s work is and this is a fine example of that. But we don’t just love it because it’s fun; this is a masterfully-edited image, and with 6,000 views online, plenty agree.

We love the texture and patterns on this trippy 3D canyon: it looks like you could reach through the page and touch it. It was included in Behance’s Illustration gallery, and it’s testament to how far you can experiment with textures.

I made this piece because I thought that a round tiger with no legs would just look funny! I used the Liquify tool in Photoshop, and it’s one of a set of round animals; the series is called Aniball.
This beautiful landscape has a stunning sense of depth to it, and appears in Anton’s square landscape series. With over 30,000 views online, he’s starting to make a name for himself with keen detail and beautiful colour palettes.

When creating landscapes, I usually divide the picture into three backgrounds using clipping masks and blend modes for some shadow/lighting layers. That way, I can control colour palettes and lighting at any stage.

I was obsessed with mazes when I was a kid. So when I stumbled on a maze generator online, I decided to incorporate it into a 3D illustration. After modelling and lighting the scene, I rendered out passes for colour and shadows and composited them together in Photoshop.
There’s something immensely satisfying about this technicolour labyrinth, and we love the hues chosen in this image. You can buy this and other maze images by JR from www.curioos.com/JR.
This image feels intriguing and unsettling; the effect of the glowing panel is expertly edited and the lack of colour elsewhere just makes it stand out further. This was one of a number of pieces featured by Behance after it was uploaded in 2017.

This piece was created as part of my studies, as I’ve been mixing 3D with digital painting lately. I finalised the landscape with textures of rocks and plants and sharpened the entire piece with a High Pass filter.

I drew some shapes with the Pen tool before applying gradients, inner glows and inner shadows to create more depth. I then created the highlights and shadows by selecting each path and painting with a soft brush inside a new layer.
