W
e all have a moment when we were bitten by the photo bug. I was first seduced by the magic of photography back in the analogue days of film, chemistry and darkrooms. I still remember watching, mesmerised as images slowly appeared in the developer, cast in the red glow of a ‘safelight’. Fast-forward 30 odd years, and everything’s a whole lot faster, dryer and generally better. However, there’s a still a part of me that hankers after the old, wet and messy processes. And that feeling of lovely handcrafted prints is hard to replicate in the digital darkroom. So this month, in a cunning combination of digital and analogue techniques, we explore the creative possibilities of old and new theologies, using a modern-day SLR (Nikon D800) and the alternative cyanotype process. It was a slow but utterly rewarding process that you can read more about on page 38. Of course we’ve not gone all old-worldly on you – so as usual, there are loads of killer digital techniques to learn and try, inspirational images to admire and reviews of all the latest kit.

“We live in a world when everyone is simply just chasing after career, luxury, social status and the opinion of others.
