“This is the Vasco da Gama bridge in Lisbon, Portugal. I spent days studying this spot and the weather conditions to be able to capture this image as I had envisioned it. This place is magic and changes second by second; there are always differences in light and shadows which create some difficulties. Post-processing only involved a slight contrast and adjustment of temperature in Adobe Camera Raw.” Canon EOS 450D with Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens; 180 sec at f/11, ISO 100

“I spent most of the afternoon around the shores of Spelga Reservoir in the Mourne Mountains, unable to see more than a few metres in front of me due to thick fog. I had been tempted to pack up and go home several times as it was a bitterly cold winter’s day. Suddenly just before sunset, the fog began to clear, creating a wonderful atmospheric pink glow across the sky. It was well worth hanging around for.” Nikon D80 with Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5 lens at 20mm; 3.6 sec at f/18, ISO 100

“This image of the Brighton West Pier was taken after a bad storm. I used a 10-stop ND filter because I wanted to achieve an ethereal looking long-exposure effect and give the scene a sense of calmness and serenity. The tide was coming in very quickly and the weather conditions and lighting kept changing.” Canon EOS 7D with Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens at 14mm; 200 sec at f/13, ISO 100
