or all the unquestionably effective changes you can make to your shots after the fact with software, there’s still something magical about achieving the look you want as you take the shot. Lens filters are just as essential a presence in your kit bag as they were in the days of film cameras – so this issue we celebrate the role of the filter, with an in-depth guide to making the most of polarisers, NDs and ND grads. Find out what you can be achieving in-camera on page 43. We’ve got a special focus on landscapes this issue, with our brilliant 52-page booklet offering 77 ways to improve your landscapes, and Hotshots showing the best of International Landscape Photographer of the Year on page 8. It’s been a treat seeing the thousands of entries to our own 2018 Photographer of the Year contest over the past few months. Meet the worthy winners on page 82.

OuR COVER IMAGE MATT REYNOLDS Matt Reynolds is a photographer based in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He says: “I get a thrill out of chasing those elusive great sunrises and sunsets – not just the sense of serenity experiencing the event, but the rush as you drive hours away because the sky or the forecast look promising. Of course, with that come the lows when Mother Nature does not cooperate.
