“You’ll find something in here to get your blood boiling” e’ve served up a sizzling triple feature this month, worthy of the greatest of grindhouse lockins. Whether your schtick is dealing death all secretive-like (Hitman), in frilly Victorian garb (Assassin’s Creed Syndicate) or, uh, with ruddy great laser swords (Star Wars Battlefront), you’ll find something in here to get your blood boiling. Elsewhere this ish there’s a hearty helping of Dark Souls III, from which I’m still recovering, to be honest. It’s as brutal as ever, and with more lore than you could shake the biggest of sticks at. To celebrate our special Halloweenish type theme, I’ve had our experts cook up some tasty treats throughout, too. Check out the back page and let us know how you get on! Enjoy your GM!

of the month
Young GM fan Lewis shares his big ambitions
M
y name is Lewis and I simply want to be a games journalist, because I love gaming, and particularly the fact is that I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I also love your magazine, as it is a classic kid’s gaming magazine, and I like reading it. I’ve wanted to be a games journalist since around three or four years ago when I got an Xbox 360. I would love to work in your office and try out games like F1 2015 and FIFA 16, and write reviews about them. I don’t see the fact of me being ten years old getting in the way, as I could be available from 4-9pm on weekdays, and any time on weekends. Plus I really, really want to play
on a current-gen console (Xbox One please!), which I assume you have. And I don’t care at all about being paid, I just want to do what I love. Please don’t let a good chance go to waste! Lewis Pardoe, Facebook Writing about games is something that we all love here on GM, and we’ve worked hard at it for many years. We all started from humble beginnings like yours, too! Unfortunately you’re not quite old enough to join the team yet, but if you’d like to be a games journalist then we recommend that you write as much as you can to practice. Do some reviews of the games you have so you can learn as much as possible, even if they’re not the most up-to-date titles. Try posting them on an online blog or Facebook, or just showing them to friends and family, for feedback. And keep writing to us! We’d love to hear what you have to say about your favourites. Good luck! n
I just heard that Halo 5 multiplayer will be online only, and there will be no splitscreen play. This is a huge disappointment for me, as the fun of playing Halo games with my friends on the same console has always been a major part of what makes them so special. I have no desire whatsoever to play a co-op mode with a complete stranger online. It’s almost like 343 Industries/Microsoft are deliberately trying to alienate the loyal fans such as myself who have always played and loved the franchise. Halo 5 could be one of the few great games which truly distinguishes the Xbox One from its competition, and from the last generation of consoles. This news has been like a slap in the face to me, and the lengthy explanation from the developer on this matter was just nonsense too. What do you think about it? Mark Kennor, email We too have fond memories of couch co-op on The Silent Cartographer and four-player Slayer on Blood Gulch. The convenience of online multiplayer can’t be beat, but there’s something special about sharing a sofa with your comrades and competitors – so it’s a shame developers are shunning it.
The A team
The now monstrous industry that is videogames has grown hugely in the last decade. It’s mostly good news for gamers that want titles worth spending a day’s wages on, but when it comes to triple-A games, the approach dozens of developers and publishers are taking is just re-skinning the same idea year after year and calling it revolutionary. We’ve seen it with COD and FIFA for over a decade now, but well known and loved franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield, and Forza are jumping off the deep end now too. It works in some cases (Forza continues to impress) but it often

“developers are reskinning the same idea year after year”
Thanks for being such a loyal reader Luke! We do have our concerns about certain big franchises failing to shake things up – especially ones that come out annually (or even faster!). At the
same time, though, we’ve seen some truly brilliant triple-A releases this year already – Batman: Arkham Knight, The Witcher 3, and Metal Gear Solid V have been some of the best gaming experiences we’ve ever had. So it’s hard to be too worried, we figure.

a big imbalance in terms of content as FUT gets more upgrades while Career mode is just copied and pasted each time. On the other hand, PES may have a similar system in myclub, but has far less emphasis on it, meaning that you can play the revamped Master League instead. How convenient is it that while PES celebrates it’s 20th anniversary it starts another golden era of instalments – a bit like Arsenal winning the FA cup back-to-back. I’m proud to see PES back in the game for good. Charlie Ridgewell, email
fools and disappoints long term fans – Assassin’s Creed Unity was a huge let down, for me. And a lot of the time the changes are so minute – ten magnifying glasses wouldn’t notice selling points like Messi’s new facial expressions, or COD’s “groundbreaking” fish AI. What do you think of the way things have changed? Anyway, love the mag (bought it every month for two years), keep up the good work guys! Luke Bradley, email
Another month at the top for the wasteland wanderer – but you’ve not forgotten to look to the stars too…
Having played the PES 2016 demo, I can tell you that FIFA seriously does not have any chance in the gameplay department – each player and pass feels intricate and organic, one thing I feel that its rival has always lacked. FIFA’s Ultimate Team is easily their biggest and most addictive game mode, but it comes with a big commitment, and it feels like there’s
While this year’s PES does indeed mark a definite bound forward in the footballing department, we still have concerns about its overall appeal. We hanker for the days of Castolo, Jaric, Minanda and Dodo (Dodo!), when each season felt like a proper journey. Have a look over on page 74-77 to see what we thought in full. TL;DR?: PES is great… but when it comes to recreating the enveloping world of football, there’s still no equal to FIFA. This is all subjective, of course. Disagree? Let us know why! n

What a rush
Gravity Rush flies onto PS4, via a sequel and a remaster, as part of a bumper TGS showcase
S
ony has announced a slew of new games as part of its showing at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, including a PS4 sequel to a GM favourite. Gravity Rush 2 sees the return of gravity-bending protagonist Kat, of course, but this time she’ll be flinging herself around more colourful, detailed, and expansive environments than ever before, as the transition to more powerful hardware allows for significant improvements to draw-distance and character detail.
What’s more, Sony has also tasked BluePoint Games with porting the original Gravity Rush to the console too, in a package that includes all of the DLC released for the Vita original, as well as visual and performance enhancements to get the cel-shaded stunner running at 1080p. Gravity Rush Remastered is due for a European release on 10 February 2016, with the sequel following a little while after. Capcom also took to the stage as part of Sony’s TGS press conference to unveil its shooty Resident Evil spin-off: Umbrella Corps. Ammo conservation gives way to frantic gunplay here,
with the most inscrutably-named of the bunch, Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, which will include an HD remake of 3DS exclusive Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, along with new cinematics and an extra playable chapter when it launches on PS4 next year.
No Morpheus
Dragon Quest Builder, meanwhile, is very clearly Square Enix’s answer to Minecraft, letting players get creative with cubes alongside a familiar cast of characters once the game launches next year for PS4, PS3, and Vita.

in a blend of third and first-person team-based blasting for PS4 and PC. Early footage suggests you’ll be able to clamber over level geometry, set traps for unwitting enemies, and even use wandering zombies as human shields when the game launches early next year. Also on show was Ni-Oh, a third-person action game in development at Ninja Gaiden developer Team Ninja (read more on page 38), and SNK Playmore stepped up to announce that The King of Fighters 14 will receive its coronation on Japanese PS4s come 2016. But Square Enix dominated the showing, at least in terms of volume, bringing a whole heap of games along to Sony’s conference. Let’s begin
The Japanese publisher also announced a surprise new entry for venerable open-world RPG series SaGa, with SaGa: Scarlet Grace coming exclusively to the Vita, as well as an instalment in the Star Ocean series that’s been pencilled in for a Japanese release on the PS3 and PS4 this February. Finally, Sony took a moment to rename its forthcoming virtual reality headset from Project Morpheus to the slightly less mystical but perhaps a little more informative PlayStation VR. A terrible blow, no doubt, for fans of Greek mythology, but probably a sensible decision to make when it comes to actually marketing the thing to the general public. n

From Software lifts the lid on its meaty Bloodborne expansion
G
ear up, hunters, it’s time to return to the plague-ridden streets of Yharnam. Sony used its pre-Tokyo Games Show conference to announce the first expansion for PlayStation 4 exclusive Bloodborne, and The Old Hunters looks set to deliver a solid splattering of fan service alongside all its new enemies and areas. First and foremost, it promises to bring to life aspects of Bloodborne’s lore that have up til now only been hinted at. Chief among them is Ludwig, the first hunter of the Healing Church, and the man behind

everyone’s favourite Holy Blade. Not only will The Old Hunters provide players with more info on this enigmatic figure’s past, but he’ll be one of several fearsome new boss characters for you to dispatch.
Hunt work
Fortunately, you’ll have plenty of new weapons and equipment with which to carve up these formidable beasties, as From Software has taken this opportunity
to significantly expand Bloodborne’s arsenal of monster-hunting weaponry. A variety of scythes, hammers, and swords have all made the cut, but the most striking new weapon of the bunch is something resembling an oversized gothic pizza cutter. The enormous circular blade is surrounded by brutal teeth, which rend and tear as your hunter performs his devastating strong attack. Simon’s Bowblade, meanwhile, offers
“simon’s bowblade allows players to loose arrows at long-range adversaries”
something truly new, allowing players to loose arrows at long-range adversaries before tapping L1 to transform it into a sword and deliver a hail of withering blows up close. Sony is billing the expansion as a ‘full scale’ experience, and promises new NPCs, outfits, and magical abilities as well as the raft of fresh weaponry. Existing locations and bosses are set to return too, providing a stiffer challenge than ever. The Old Hunters will be available for Bloodborne players to download come 24 November priced £11.99. If you’re yet to step foot in Yharnam, though, Sony is planning to release a collected edition of Bloodborne that bundles in the new DLC on 3 December. Happy hunting! n

VR is going to be a fertile place for FPS games, and I think you’ll see some surprising things there. The beauty of the FPS is that it’s a very natural way to interact in a game – the perspective is as close as you can get to being there.
The FPS genre is going the same way as every other: to open worlds. Linear shooters are a dying breed, and in ten years time they’re going to be the niche – mainstream titles will have more in common with Far Cry than Call Of Duty.
I love the old school shooters: Timesplitters, Goldeneye, and the early CODs, and I’m not liking how the genre’s changing. I worry what it’ll be like in 10 years time – hopefully the new Doom will change that… or I’ll be doomed!
