Welcome iCreate 187

“iOS 12 allows you to better disconnect from your device to enjoy the moment” Toupee-chested music mogul Simon Cowell recently went on record to say that he’d taken a ten-month hiatus from his mobile phone and that he was much calmer and happier as a result. While such a drastic course of action is unthinkable for many of us, Apple has boldly implemented new features into iOS 12 designed to reduce interruptions and allow you to manage your screen time more effectively. These include Activity Reports, App Limits and new and improved Do Not Disturb and Notifications controls that allow you to better disconnect from your device to enjoy the moment and the people you are with. You can read all about these and other huge iOS 12 enhancements in our WWDC 2018 special report starting on page 8. Also this issue we present your ultimate Apple Travel Guide featuring all of the best apps and gear to use on holiday (from booking to relaxing) and showcase apps for making money through your iPhone, including the best apps for earning, selling and even winning cash. We hope that you enjoy the issue!

Say hello to macOS Mojave Does Mojave’s impressive feature list give enough reason to upgrade?

“Dark Mode brings a dramatic new look to macOS that puts content front and centre, familiar iOS apps come to the Mac for the first time and the redesigned Mac App Store makes finding new apps easier”

macOS Mojave has officially been unveiled as Apple’s 15th Mac operating system. The new operating system was announced on stage at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in early June, with Tim Cook, the company’s CEO describing Mojave as being “inspired by pro users, but designed for everyone”. A host of new features have been added, but is it enough to make users upgrade? We’ve taken an in-depth look at macOS Mojave and found some standout features.

The Mac has taken a backseat while Apple has focused its attention on iOS and watchOS in recent times, so it’s finally time for the desktop and laptop to get some love. The headline feature is a new Dark Mode which turns the main components of the operating system dark grey and looks stunning. Users can toggle between a light and dark desktop, and built-in apps like Mail, Messages, Maps, Calendar and Photos all include Dark Mode designs. Your desktop can now react differently according to the time of the day, toggling Dark Mode on and off automatically. Thought your Mac App Store has been looking dated for while? You’re not the only one. Finally, Apple has given the Mac App Store a huge design and feature overhaul, bringing it in line with its redesigned iOS equivalent. The redesign sees big billboards calling out new apps and collections, as well as a lot more editorial content. It highlights new and updated apps in the Discover tab, while tabs for Create, Work, Play and Develop help users find apps for a specific project or purpose. Apart from the obvious redesign, the big news here is who is onboard for the relaunch. Microsoft and Adobe will be making Office 365 and Lightroom CC respectively available for download via the Mac App Store for the first time.

Get organised Mac users with messy desktops will love a new feature called Stacks, which can organise even the most cluttered of desktops by automatically stacking files The Mac App Store is completely redesigned with rich editorial content and new tabs for easier app discovery.

into neat groups based on file type. Users can customise their Stacks to sort based on other file attributes like date and tags. Elsewhere, a new Gallery view has been added to Finder that makes it easier than ever to view collections of images, while a Preview pane now shows all of a file’s metadata, making it easier to manage media assets. In macOS Mojave, handy apps including News, Stocks, Voice Memos and Home are now available on Mac for the first time. These iOS favourites now have a place on Mac, which in the form of News and Home especially is long overdue. As with all Apple software updates, enhanced privacy and security remain a top priority in macOS Mojave. In Safari, enhanced Intelligent Tracking Prevention helps block social media ‘Like’ or ‘Share’ buttons and comment widgets from tracking users without permission. Apple are on the offensive already: “macOS Mojave is a major update that introduces powerful new features for a wide range of Mac users, from consumers to pros,” says Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “Dark Mode brings a dramatic new look to macOS that puts your content front and centre, familiar iOS apps come to the Mac for the first time and the redesigned Mac App Store makes finding new apps easier and more enjoyable than ever.” macOS Mojave instantly looks a more appealing proposition than its predecessor High Sierra. At the time of going to press, a developer preview was already available but keep your eyes peeled for the public beta, which will be downloadable throughout the summer. Expect macOS Mojave to be ready for action sometime in the autumn.

watchOS 5 delivers high-performance features for running enthusiasts, including a new steps per minute metric for indoor and outdoor runs and walks, as well as a new pace alarm for outdoor runs that alerts users when they are behind or ahead of their designated target pace.

Activity competitions Building on the excitement around Activity Sharing, watchOS 5 now enables users to invite another Apple Watch wearer to compete in a sevenday Activity competition, earning points for closing Activity Rings, while receiving coaching notifications to help stay engaged and win the week.

Podcasts comes to Apple Watch Users can now listen to their favourite podcasts on the go with Apple Podcasts on Apple Watch and stream any podcast they have using Siri. Episodes will automatically sync to Apple Watch, and as they’re listened to on other devices, the app will automatically refresh with the latest episode. The Apple Podcasts app comes to Apple Watch in watchOS 5.

WWDC 2018 Special Report

Introducing iOS 12 The WWDC 2018 was all about the software and taking centre stage was the latest incarnation of Apple’s mobile operating system

iOS 12 Key Features Faster, more responsive Interestingly, iOS 12 will improve the performance of all supported devices, especially the older ones thanks to optimisation of the A-series chipset.

New apps There are some awesome new bolt-on apps with iOS 12, such as ScreenTime, that helps you monitor the amount of time you and your family spend on your devices.

Shared AR The new USDZ file format makes it easy to share AR files between devices and enjoy incredible new AR experiences just by pointing your device at inanimate objects.

Memoji and fun effects The Messages app now lets you create your own personal animated avatars and provides quick and easy access to a wealth of fun new camera effects and filters.

Group FaceTime You can now FaceTime with up to 32 different people simultaneously, and it is built into the Messages interface so you can go from group chat to group Facetime instantly.

Though not a huge update by any stretch of the imagination, iOS 12 will instead offer an improvement in response and performance across all supported iPhone and iPad models (which is the same set that were able to run iOS 11), improvements to existing features and apps, including some fun new ways to communicate, and a sprinkling of cool new apps to make even better use of the extensive capabilities of your iOS device. We’re very excited.

Turbo charged Perhaps most impressive of all iOS 12’s features is how it will double-down on performance to make every device that previously supported iOS 11 faster and more responsive, especially the older ones. Now your apps will launch up to 40 per cent faster, your iOS keyboard will pop-up 50 per cent faster and swiping to launch your camera will be up to 70 per cent faster. This is thanks to Apple optimising the A-series chipset so that the CPU performance is ramped up to its highest level when you need a performance spike to scroll content or launch apps, and then wound-down afterwards to preserve battery power. It’s like to plunging an adrenaline syringe into your iPhone for a short burst of additional power.

Shared AR experiences Apple has been a long-time champion of augmented reality (AR) and iOS 12 pushes this technology further to change the way in which we work and have fun. In collaboration with Pixar, Apple has developed a new AR file format called USDZ – a compact single file format that is

The new ‘For You’ section in Photos includes your Memories, filter recommendations and more…

The iOS 12 Photos app also recommends photos to share with other people…

optimised for sharing while retaining highquality 3D graphics and animations. USDZ works across iOS and files can be easily shared through Messages and Mail. These files place 3D objects in the real world, like an AR ‘Quick-Look’ and the possibilities are endless. For example, USDZ can revolutionise the way we shop online by allowing us to see the items we want to purchase, such as appliances, in situ within

our homes. The effect is slightly akin to QR code technology, but on a altogether more jaw-dropping scale. This technology is made possible by the introduction of AR Kit 2 that brings improved face-tracking, realistic rendering, 3D object detection, personal experiences and shared experiences to iOS 12. This includes fun two-player games in which cool graphics are superimposed on what both players can see on their iOS screens, from their own unique perspective, and other people can even sit in and spectate from the side. It is this sort of technology than can make iOS a huge-hitting gaming platform and the potential in the classroom is immense.

In iOS 12, new and exciting AR experiences can be triggered by inanimate objects, such as LEGO

Enhanced Photos app As up to a trillion photos are captured on iPhones each year, the Photos app is the best way to relive and share those moments, made easy by the existing scene recognition software that makes finding specific people, objects and even

WWDC 2018 Special Report

fauna instantaneous. iOS 12 will boost the app’s search capabilities still further by suggesting scenes, places, etc, and even categories of photos to help speed up your search. Photos can index over four million events by time and location making your images easier to find. Another new feature of Photos is the ‘For You’ tab. This presents a personal round-up of featured photos (such as ‘On this day’), effects suggestions (such as looping a Live Photo) and all of your shared album activity into one handy photographic digest. The app even now scrutinises your photos and, using facial recognition, will suggest people to share them with based on whether those people appear in the images. It’s quite staggering (and frighteningly efficient). Once the images have been shared, the recipient will get a notification on their device to ‘share back’, bouncing their images of the same event back so both users get the full set.

A smarter Siri With over ten billion requests processed every month, Siri is already the mostused digital assistant available that works across all of your iOS devices. In iOS 12, Apple has introduced a new feature called ‘Shortcuts’ whereby any third-party app can expose quick actions to Siri that you can then request using your own custom phrase. When this phrase is spoken, Siri will instantly jump into the app to bring up the information you need. Again, this With Shortcuts you can incorporate Siri even more into your daily routine…

12

187

With the Shortcuts app you can create Siri shortcuts to any third-party app that you use often, enhancing your daily productivity

can help speed up productivity across all aspects of our lives. Then there is ‘Siri Suggestions’, a feature where Siri can suggest things based on your current location. For example, it can suggest that you purchase your usual morning coffee – straight from your Lock screen – in anticipation of you passing your favourite coffee shop. With the new Shortcuts iOS 12 app, you can even create your own shortcuts with multiple steps across multiple applications using a simple dragand-drop interface.

The improved Do Not Disturb mode can be accessed through the iOS 12 Control Center

Monitor screen time So engaging are modern apps that they often demand time that could be better spent in the moment, distracting us with notifications to draw us in when we should be enjoying time with the people around us, so Apple has introduced a built-in set of new features into iOS 12 to help us limit distractions and understand how we are spending our time. Do Not Disturb has been improved so that you can block all notifications from your screen for periods determined by you. This can be easily implemented via Control Center – just set the ending time and the ignorance will be bliss. You can also limit how many notifications you receive by a process called ‘Instant Tuning, which can be done from the Lock screen. If you receive a notification, you can press on it to get the option to limit further notifications from that app. Another new feature called ‘Screen Time’ empowers you with insight
