iPhone 11 This year’s must–have? BY Alex Summersby

A

t its annual Fall special event in September, Apple introduced iPhone 11 and also its first “Pro” smartphone line, iPhone 11 Pro, which comes in two sizes, including a “Max” version. The new–generation iPhones raise the bar in several ways, including faster Gigabit–class LTE, Wi–Fi 6, Ultra Wideband precision location technology, Dual SIM capability (with eSIM), and the Apple A13 Bionic chip, which Apple says is

20% faster than its predecessor. But most notable is the new dual–camera system in iPhone 11 and triplecamera system in iPhone 11 Pro. In iPhone 11, the 12–megapixel f/1.8 Wide camera has a sensor with Focus Pixels covering 100% of its area, promising up to three times faster autofocus in low light. This is joined by an additional 12MP Ultra Wide camera with f/2.4 aperture and 120° field of view. Zooming between the two delivers 2x optical zoom. For stills, both offer Portrait mode with advanced bokeh (background blur) and Depth Control, Portrait Lighting effects including a new High–Key Mono effect, and a new Night Mode that uses adaptive bracketing to produce brighter images in low light, with more natural colors and reduced noise. Smart HDR uses the A13 Bionic chip’s machine learning to capture more intense detail, while Deep Fusion, coming in a software update later this Fall, optimizes images pixel–by–pixel for enhanced texture, detail, and noise reduction. The front–facing 12MP f/2.2 TrueDepth camera also offers all this, plus Face ID up to 30% faster,

On top of all this, iPhone 11 Pro has a third f/2.0 Telephoto camera. This triple–camera system delivers a combined 4x optical zoom range. Video capability is stunning. All the cameras are capable of 4K video recording at up to 60 fps, or 1080p slo–mo at 120fps or 240fps, with extended dynamic range, cinematic video stabilization, and continuous autofocus, as well as time–lapse. With the new QuickTake feature, you can simply hold down the shutter button to start recording video without having to switch out of Photo mode first. You can edit your videos in the iOS 13 Photos app — including rotate, crop, increase exposure, and apply filters. The iPhone 11 has a 6.1–inch 326ppi Liquid Retina LCD display (1,792 x 828 pixels) with True Tone, Wide Color support, and a typical contrast ratio of 1,400:1. 30 minutes. Apple promises battery life “one hour more than iPhone XR”. The iPhone 11 comes in six colors, and starts at $699 ($50 less than iPhone XR on release). The iPhone 11 Pro comes in two sizes, each with a choice of four colors. Both Pro sizes have a Super

Retina XDR 458ppi OLED display, with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and IP68 water resistance up to 4 meters for 30 minutes. The 5.8–inch (2,436 x 1,125-pixels) iPhone 11 Pro starts at $999, the 6.5–inch (2,688 x 1,242 pixels) iPhone 11 Pro Max at $1,099. Battery life for iPhone 11 Pro is “up to 4 hours more than iPhone XS”; for iPhone 11 Pro Max it’s “up to 5 hours more than iPhone XS Max”. Both come with an 18W fast charger. The iPhone 8 will continue to be available, now from $449, as will the iPhone XR, now starting at $599. Save by trading in your current iPhone, or try the Apple iPhone Upgrade Program — for one monthly payment, you get an iPhone, AppleCare+ cover, a choice of carrier, and the opportunity to upgrade to a new iPhone every year.

Photo and video are the big updates, including a new Night Mode and the new Ultra Wide camera. maclife.com Nov 2019 9

means only one thing: a new version of iOS to get excited about. And for the first time we can say “iPhone” without adding “and iPad” as the iPad now has its own operating system, iPadOS. So iOS 13 is now only for iPhone and iPod touch users. Among a host of new features in iOS 13, a few stand out. There’s the long–awaited new Dark Mode, as well as new ways to edit photos, improvements to Siri Shortcuts, and the ability to use the keyboard by swiping over characters.

Guide to iOS 13

iOS 13 overview Siri

Dark Mode

> Time to talk Apple said at WWDC that Siri would have a new voice that would be completely software– generated, but more realistic than the current audio clips.

> Turn it on Dark Mode changes the look of the OS and of apps that support it, making them, well, darker. You can set it manually in Control Centre or Settings, or make it come on automatically at night.

> Automate this Siri Shortcuts is included by default, and it’s now easier to use with an Automations section that allows you to create custom routines.

> In the background New wallpapers can change to reflect Dark Mode or you can “dim the lights” on your existing wallpaper so that when you switch on Dark Mode it has higher contrast.

> Working together Siri works with competitors to Apple apps in iOS 13, like Google Maps and Spotify. It works better with Apple’s AirPods and HomePod too.

> Privacy and security

> Performance boost

In iOS 13, you can sign into websites and apps using your AppleID, instead of creating a new username and password for each service. Just tap on “Sign in with Apple” and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID. Apps are only allowed to ask for your name and email address, and Apple will even create a unique email address that forwards messages to your real one so the app or website never knows your actual email address.

There’s a long list of performance improvements in iOS 13, and while many of them are under the hood and have arcane names, they will make a real difference. At WWDC Apple said App load times have been cut in half. In addition, app downloads from the App Store will be reduced in size by as much as 50%. Updates will also be smaller, meaning faster download times and less space used on your iPhone.

The 5G future

Living in lifethe fast Lane There’s no faster network on earth, wired or not. Here’s why 5G will change everything — eventually written by Alex cox You have heard about 5G. You can’t have missed it. But beyond the marketing hype, and outside of its broad position as a next– generation mobile phone technology, it’s not entirely clear what 5G actually is from the outside. Realistically, it’s not entirely clear on the inside, either. “5G” is something of a blanket term, one that has so far covered a whole bunch of disparate technologies and frequencies, and a term that could mean radically different things depending on who’s using it and for what purpose. It could even be a lie, if the actions of AT&T are anything to go by: the company has branded its experimental 4G LTE services as “5G E” — despite them very definitely not being 5G services. What we do know is this: 5G, proper 5G, is revolutionary. It’s astonishingly fast, high capacity, and it’s likely the most important communications upgrade since the invention of the internet. maclife.com Nov 2019 33

As photographers, wE have a range of problems to overcome in the quest for the perfect shot. Pixelmator Photo ($4.99, App Store) enables us to peruse pictures from our Photos Library (or from sources such as iCloud Drive) and then process their colors and tones to try to produce better–looking versions. The app boasts a wider range of tools than those found in the iOS Photos app, so we can take more control of our finished photos from the comfort and convenience of our iPad. We can even remove blemishes such as sensor spots (or even people) thanks to the intelligent Repair brush — we’ll put that tool through its paces on page 91. Any changes we make to pictures are non–destructive, so we can experiment with a range of looks safe in the knowledge that we can revert to the original photo at any time. George Cairns
