MUST-KNOW SKILLS

SIX SKILLS YOU

MUST KNOW! No matter what you use Photoshop for, there are six features that every photographer needs to know…

W

hatever you use Photoshop for, there are a handful of fundamental features that form the foundations of almost any task. No self-respecting Photoshop user can live without them because they allow you to unlock a whole new world of photo-editing creativity. We’ve boiled them down here to a core group of six – layers, masks, selections, Channels, Curves and brushes. Perhaps surprisingly, all of these features have been around since Photoshop version 3, introduced almost 20 years ago. However, they continue to impress and reward after numerous incarnations, dominating our everyday Photoshop habits. Over the next 12 pages we’ll take you on a tour of these grand old masters and explain how they play a part in almost any Photoshop project that you’re likely to tackle.

PMZ24.feat02sixskills.indd 24

So if you’re new to Photoshop, or you’re simply in need of a refresher course, it’s the perfect opportunity to get back to basics and master the cornerstones of what makes this imageediting software inspire such creativity and delight. There’s also a host of useful expert tips, tricks and techniques for you to try out for yourself. Whether you want to find out how to replace a dull sky with selections and Layer Masks, use Channels to make intricate selections, make perfect cut-outs with Refine Edge, or discover the incredible range of effects and designs that you can make with brushes, you’ll find all the answers here. And as always, there’s a great selection of accompanying videos on the included video disc. So read on to find out how these half-dozen fundamental features will take your photo editing to the next level.

CREATIVE PROJECT

MAKE YOUR OWN FANTASY CREATURE

Create a fantasy creature Make a weird and wonderful creepy fantastical creature from a handful of ordinary portraits PROJECT INFO You’ll learn

How to change skin tone colour, how to use selections and masks to copy and replace body parts, and how to use the Liquify tool to push the image into shape

You’ll need

Photoshop CS4 or above

It’ll take

One hour

YOUR GENIUS JAMES PATERSON Our Technique Editor is a former studio pro with a decade of photographic experience. Recently named the New Consumer Specialist/ Customer Journalist of the year at the Professional Publishers Association, he specialises in creative imagery, retouching and photomontage.

W

ith a little help from Camera Raw’s Adjustment Brush and Photoshop’s Liquify command, you can turn anyone you like into an elfin fantasy creature. We’ll start by making a few changes to dull the skin tone and give it a greenish pallor using the Adjustment Brush in Camera Raw. Once opened into Photoshop, we’ll copy in body parts from similar images to get elfin ears, a furrowed brow and a bald head – a duplicate of the shoulder! From here we’ll drop in a new background, then go to work with the Liquify command to shrink the arms, bloat the eyes and warp the hands. Finally, we’ll give the eyes a blue shimmer, add glowing elvish script to a ring and make a few strands of straggly hair. As with all our projects there’s a complete walkthrough among the files on the disc, but to download a speedy two-minute video, type this link into your web browser: http://mos.practicalphotoshopmag.com/ creature_2_minutes.zip.

CREATIVE PROJECT

SURREAL COMPOSITE

Let your imagination take flight Use sophisticated selection tools to combine components into a Magritte-inspired surreal composite PROJECT INFO You’ll learn

How to select a figure and refine a selection, add shadows and reflection effects as well as create a treated background

You’ll need

Photoshop CS6

It’ll take

20 minutes

YOUR GENIUS GEORGE CAIRNS George has been using Photoshop since the very start with version one, and remembers the dark days when it didn’t have layers! After a decade of teaching the joys of creative image editing, he extended his reach by writing regular Photoshop tutorials for magazines including Digital Camera and PhotoPlus.

S

urrealist artists such as René Magritte appreciated the eye-catching images you could create by juxtaposing everyday objects in a creative way. In this walkthrough we will use Photoshop’s selection tools to isolate a Magritte-style city gent and then seamlessly blend him into a scenic seascape. We’ll show you how to avoid the jagged cutout look around the figure’s edges by using the Refine Edge command to smooth them out. You’ll also learn how to subtly soften the figure’s outline so that he blends in more effectively with the pixels in the new location. Any trace of studio backdrop can give the game away that the figure has been composited, so we’ll show you how to tighten the selection around the figure and remove tell-tale fringing. You can apply the techniques covered in this walkthrough to your own projects and create more convincing composites. When you add a selected figure to a new environment they can look like they’re hovering in the scene. We’ll demonstrate how to embed the figure more effectively by using layers and transformations to add his reflection to the seascape’s soggy shore. We’ll also paint in shadows by his feet using brush strokes, to help ground him in the new location. We’ll finish off by compositing and transforming umbrellas – another staple ingredient of a Magritte artwork – and show you how to make the more distant ones fade into the computer-generated mist. As always, if you get stuck at any stage you can check out the video tutorial to see our selection and compositing techniques in action.
