When we’re creating art, it’s impossible to work in a vacuum. We always take inspiration from things around us, whether it’s our environment, technology, politics, history, or the work of previous masters of art. And this issue, we’ll be focusing on the latter. Our big feature this month looks at the works of a few of history’s greatest painters and shows you how you can take inspiration from them, their style and their techniques, to create your own timeless digital art. Among our expert tutorials this issue, you’ll learn how to transform a dull city scene into an atmospheric composition (p44), create a beautiful pencil sketch (p38) and compose a stunning, realistic winter landscape. In addition, we have our regular great range of Elements tutorials, professional reviews and insightful interviews. We hope you enjoy the issue!

Overload This image is a representation of modern life and the brain overload that comes with that. The image was created largely with stock photos, including the subject, the nebula and the buildings either side of his arms.
In Issue 160, we challenged you to get creative with the set theme of ‘Human’. You were allowed to create whatever you wanted, so long as it incorporated the theme somehow.

trending images
Check out some of the most popular artwork that’s been rocking the internet over the last few weeks, and take inspiration from what’s currently trending There’s nothing more inspiring than surfing the internet and seeing what other artists are creating, and we always encourage you to do so. Here are some of our favourite pictures that caught our attention recently, from some of the world’s most exciting artists and designers out there.
From the lighting and shading in the water to the way the phone’s made from brick and tile, this is an incredibly imaginative and well-executed composition. It was awarded with a Photography showcase badge on Behance.
Alexis Goodwin alexisgoodwin.com
This series of miniature dioramas in the shape of smartphones was commissioned to show the possibilities of Three Mobile’s unlimited data service. Created using CG and stock photography, the series shows unlimited travel, streaming live sport and unlimited music streaming.

This piece was made in Cinema 4D using textures created in Photoshop. I created a complex stripe pattern with rectangles and used Photoshop’s colour correction tools to give it a colour palette.
We love how playful Aditya’s work is and this is a fine example of that. But we don’t just love it because it’s fun; this is a masterfully-edited image, and with 6,000 views online, plenty agree.
Aditya Aryanto instagram.com/ditpict
We love the texture and patterns on this trippy 3D canyon: it looks like you could reach through the page and touch it. It was included in Behance’s Illustration gallery, and it’s testament to how far you can experiment with textures.

I made this piece because I thought that a round tiger with no legs would just look funny! I used the Liquify tool in Photoshop, and it’s one of a set of round animals; the series is called Aniball.
This beautiful landscape has a stunning sense of depth to it, and appears in Anton’s square landscape series. With over 30,000 views online, he’s starting to make a name for himself with keen detail and beautiful colour palettes.

When creating landscapes, I usually divide the picture into three backgrounds using clipping masks and blend modes for some shadow/lighting layers. That way, I can control colour palettes and lighting at any stage.
Mateusz Lengling instagram. com/lxny__
I am always searching for materials I can use in my work when I’ve got an idea; I found this subject and wanted to make a futuristic piece. Finally I came up with a solar panel edit, which I really like!
JR Schmidt jrschmidt. com
I was obsessed with mazes when I was a kid. So when I stumbled on a maze generator online, I decided to incorporate it into a 3D illustration. After modelling and lighting the scene, I rendered out passes for colour and shadows and composited them together in Photoshop.
There’s something immensely satisfying about this technicolour labyrinth, and we love the hues chosen in this image. You can buy this and other maze images by JR from www.curioos.com/JR.
This image feels intriguing and unsettling; the effect of the glowing panel is expertly edited and the lack of colour elsewhere just makes it stand out further. This was one of a number of pieces featured by Behance after it was uploaded in 2017.

I created this artwork back in 2014 as part of my series, The Fragile. The artwork was created in Adobe Photoshop, and it is a combination of photomanipulation and digital painting.
Maurício Xavier

This piece was created as part of my studies, as I’ve been mixing 3D with digital painting lately. I finalised the landscape with textures of rocks and plants and sharpened the entire piece with a High Pass filter.
Sorin Ilie

I drew some shapes with the Pen tool before applying gradients, inner glows and inner shadows to create more depth. I then created the highlights and shadows by selecting each path and painting with a soft brush inside a new layer.

Murilo Francisco

This image was inspired by forests and valleys. I started by adding natural elements into the scene before using a few adjustment layers to give the finished image more life and depth.
Lucy Liew
photoshopcreative.co.uk/user/ lucyliew
This image was created using two different images, which I manipulated into a simple doubleexposure image. I extracted the image of the woman using the Quick Selection tools, and pasted it on a white background, then overlaid it with an image of clouds.
Ocelio Targino Targino
photoshop creative.co.uk/ user/Ocelio%20
Using some light effects and creativity, I worked on this image in Photoshop CC and Camera Raw to create a fantasy image. I used lots of layers, including Curves adjustments to correct the balance between the light and dark.
