My parents’ house has lots going for it – great location, big garden, plenty of bedrooms – but there’s one thing that always made me slightly embarrassed to take friends home when I was growing up. It is, simply put, ugly. All kinds of extensions have been added over the years, but none have improved the post-war bungalow’s attractiveness a jot. There’s no main entrance or sense of symmetry, and the car park added for my dad’s 4x4 collection has done nothing to aid its plight. If you’re reading this and thinking ‘that sounds like my house’, then we’re here to help. Turn to page 95 for great ways to transform the exterior of any property. Whether you want to add a new porch, landscape the garden, or introduce render or cladding, you’ll find practical advice on how to turn your unsightly house into somewhere your children will be proud to bring their friends. On the subject of family, my husband and I are expecting our own arrival any day now (turn to page 162 for the inspiration behind our nursery), which means I’m heading off on maternity and leaving you in the very capable hands of the rest of the Real Homes team. Here’s hoping that our little one isn’t as judgmental of her first home as I was!
