Editor’s letter February 2015 / Issue 239

I’ve a friend whose new year’s resolution is to relinquish all tech for three months. Between the hours of 7pm and 7am, he and his wife committed to turn off laptops, tablets and phones, unplug the router, cancel Netflix. Naturally, he took great pleasure in telling me this. I immediately bet him a small sum he wouldn’t make February. Yet so far I’ve not heard from him. Not a peep on Facebook, nor a text, Tweet or email. So I assume he’s kept to his pledge. Now I commend any undertaking that requires effort and strength of character (within reason. Marathon running in the Sahara ain’t for me). But I still counter my pal’s point that unplugging himself makes life better. He’s wrong. Tech makes life easier. More enjoyable. Longer, supposedly. That’s the point of it – smart people invent things to improve the human condition, solve a problem or service a need. We punters drink in the benefits, save up and spend, imagining a future version of ourselves slimmer, smarter, better-looking and more successful, all through the power of a well-considered purchase. But to borrow and butcher a phrase, a smartwatch does not a marathon runner make. Not quite yet, anyway.

Which is why we delve deep this issue into the enriching tech available for everyone right now – no matter what your particular need or want might be. Whether your intention is to get fit, be more productive, or simply to make more of your precious downtime, we have ideas and upgrades that’ll deliver on their life-enhancing promises. Pride of place is our round-up of the best ten smartwatches available right now. Whether you’re a fitness fanatic looking to log your miles, or after something packing nextgen functionality that you could wear to a posh restaurant, we have a selection for you. Dive in from page 54. Self-improvement isn’t the only thing we’re focusing on this issue, though – as ever we’re packed from cover to cover with objects of gadgetry desire. Chief amongst them this month is a selection of the best 4K laptops available right now (page 107); a round-up of the very highest quality (and highest priced) audiophile headphones, on page 104; and on page 99 you’ll find the very definition of my friend’s tech nightmare – a phone with two screens. Two screens may or may not make your life easier. And unlike iOS Health or Google Fit, headphones and laptops won’t necessarily make you live any longer. But let’s be honest – they certainly make life a heck of a lot more fun. Tom Dennis, editor Twitter: @tomdennis / Email: tom.dennis@futurenet.com
