To meet the growing demand for battery electric heavy-duty vehicles and machines, the Volvo Group has initiated the process to establish a large-scale production plant for battery cells in Sweden.

An extensive site localization study has been done, which indicates that the Skaraborg region in Sweden is an ideal location for the plant. The proposed site in the municipality of Mariestad is situated close to the Volvo Group’s current main powertrain plant in Skövde and will benefit from the region’s existing industrial and logistics infrastructure and build on a strong heritage and world-class competence in advanced, highvolume manufacturing, while having access to Sweden’s rich supply of fossil free energy. The Volvo Group’s R&D centers and headquarters in Gothenburg are only two hours away. The Volvo Group plans to gradually increase capacity and reach large-scale series production by 2030. The battery cells will be designed specifically for commercial vehicle supportingapplications,theglobal rollout of electric trucks, buses, construction equipment and electric drivelines for different Establishmentapplications. of the production site is subject to approvals from relevant authorities. The final localization will be determined after the public consultation has been conducted and operations are subject to environmental permit approvals.

“We aim to lead the transition to a decarbonized transport system and have the long-term ambition to offer our customers solutions that are 100% fossil free. There is a strong demand from our customers already today, and by 2030, it is our ambition that at least 35% of the products we sell are electric. This ramp-up will require large volumes of high-performing batteries, produced using fossil free energy and it is a logical next step for us to include battery production in our future industrial footprint. We

Richard Robinson, Viridor’s Direc tor of Health and Safety, added: “We must ensure everyone goes home safe every day, this is the first and most critical step to running our business. Health and safety is cen tral to our ESG strategy to ensure that our people, visitors, contractors and communities where we operate know that we are one of the safest operators in the sector.”

Viridor’s CEO Kevin Bradshaw commented: “Leading on health, safety, decarbonisation, and cir cularity is where we can make a meaningful difference. By classify ing waste decarbonisation activities as green investments, the Govern ment could unlock more investment into UK infrastructure and build on the UK’s leading net zero targets.

To do this, the Taxonomy will need to classify key areas of the waste sector as green, including removing polluting plastics from the waste stream and capturing carbon from waste treatment processes. This will ensure that ESG-aligned funds can invest in delivering ESG strategies.

A recent report by Anthesis out lined the scale of the opportunity to invest in recycling infrastruc ture alone – £1bn of investment in infrastructure would end the export of plastic waste and create over 2000 direct and supply chain jobs.

If the sector is not included, there is a risk that investment will fall short of what is needed.

VIRIDOR COMMITS TO BEING AN ESG LEADER WITH LAUNCH OF NEW STRATEGY

Viridor is committed to becoming a net zero company. Policy will be a huge factor in how fast and far we can move on this journey.” On health and safety specifically, Viridor has refreshed its award-win ning HomeSafe programme to improve its health and safety score.

As part of the strategy, Viri dor outlines major commitments to drive performance across envi ronmental, social and governance metrics. The strategy has three major targets: Best in sector health and safety per formance by 2025 A fully circular plastics recycling and reprocessing business by 2025 A net zero carbon business by 2040 and a climate positive business by 2045 – removing more CO2 a year than the total fossil carbon emis sions it generates. The strategy reinforces Viridor’s net zero commitments, including programmes focused on reducing the fossil content of non-recyclable waste and deploying carbon capture technology at its Runcorn facili ty – one of the UK’s largest Energy Recovery Facilities. As proof of its progress on ESG thus far, Viridor has submitted a bid for Runcorn to be one of the first Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects selected by the Government in the North West’s HyNet cluster. Installing CCS at Runcorn alone could save over 0.8 million tonnes a year of CO2, while also capturing biogenic CO2 to generate negative emissions. But this ESG strategy is just one part of the equation. Another criti cal part is the Government’s Green Taxonomy which it is set to consult on by the end of the year. More detailed rules on what counts as sustainable investment are then due to Thefollow.Taxonomy will shape invest ment across the economy and must therefore play a critical role in supporting the transition to net zero and a circular economy. It is vital that this framework supports decarbonisation of the waste sector – the UK’s seventh biggest emitter.

Viridor is committed to working with the Government and partners across the sector to ensure that the policy drives this much needed investment. To help the UK recy cle more of the waste it produces, Viridor aims to reach full circularity across all four major plastic types by 2025.

over 6.3 billion tonnes of plastic being thrown away since the 1950s, only 600 million tonnes of it has been recycled- and the other majority has been sent to landfill. It begs the question, what can we do to make a difference? Biodegradable and composta ble materials are rapidly on the rise in 2022. A majority of Co-op stores across the UK now offer compostable carrier bags, with their second use to be a food caddy liner. The Coop states, “by removing Co-op Bags for Life from sale, we expect to reduce 870 tonnes of single-use plastic per year.” Lidl have been selling net bags since 2019 to put your fruit and vegetables in, with the means to combat the high use of plastic wrapping. its course to break down the material and can be disinte grated by a biological process. Biodegradable packaging can be placed in the main bin and then sent to landfill. However, the natural breakdown allows them to ‘dissolve’ much quick er, with the aim of around 12 Compostableweeks. means it can be turned into compost, however, this can only be done in indus trial compost facilities, due to the conditions they are placed in, which allow the packag ing to break down at a much quicker pace. If placed in the correct environment, com postable packaging does break down within a smaller time scale, in comparison to biode gradable, as we allow nature to take its course and break it down at a natural pace. There are many things we can do to avoid using single use plastic, and many come at affordable prices. The first and most obvious to many would be to buy a reusable water bottle. Many places, even train stations, have refillable water stations, meaning you can save a few pennies over the year. Within the typical household, we should now be seeing three different types of bins — one being the main waste collec tion bin, then the green recy cling bin, and lastly, the small silver/grey compost bin.

Reusable bags have been around for years, but now, they seem to be everywhere, with the majority of bags now being foldable into a tiny pocket and easy enough to clip onto the side of your bag. Straws were becoming a significant prob lem, especially when it came to harming sea life. Simply switching to metal, bamboo or glass straws can help waste significantly and should last you the rest of time. Many supermarkets up and down the country now also offer ‘won ky fruit and vegetable boxes’ which are often presented in a cardboard box with no addi tional plastic packaging, and this has helped not only with using sustainable packaging, but avoiding food waste too. The UK government has stated that in 2020, ‘the recycling rate for England was 44.0%, com THE

Although progress may be slightly delayed in the UK in comparison to other parts of the world, it is picking up mo mentum in 2022, and it seems we are steering a clear pathway in using more biodegradable and compostable packaging.

Italy, according to the Europe an Commissions report from 2022, state they recycle 79% of the waste it collects. A huge 35% difference between Italy and the UK, but with consist ent improvements and every one playing a part in being more sustainable, the UK will help close that gap.

THE 5 R’S OF MANAGEMENTWASTETHE5R’SOFWASTEMANAGEMENT Refuse. Reduce. Reuse. Repurpose. Recycle.

Although recycling is very much embodied in our core values, there are actually four other steps that should be taken before we even reach the point of recycling. It is important to learn these 5 R’s of waste management and you then can refer to the process in any business setting to make a more positive outcome with their recycling habits. In turn this can help keep the environment cleaner and if in the nature of hazardous waste, the business can dispose of this safely. →

Definition wise – refuse means non-hazardous solid waste that requires collection and transport to a processing or disposal unit. Obviously, refusing helps process a sig nificant amount of waste from the start, when collected in the correct manner. However, one simple step to minimising waste is to stop buying non-re cyclable and wasteful products. It is mostly down to what you buy — swapping single-use containers and water bottles is a sure way to reduce waste by a substantial amount.

What do we mean by reduce?

Reduce. To lessen. To lower. To cut down. To reduce on sin gle use plastics and materials will dramatically reduce what will end up in landfill. Simple things, from stopping the use of Styrofoam cups in the office, to printing on both sides of the paper really do go a long way. In today’s world, the throw away culture is very much at large and this thought process needs to be halted. One way to help reduce your use of single use plastics, especially in an office environment, is to set targets to halve the packaging you order in a year and also

Prior to recycling, we should attempt to refuse, reduce, reuse and repurpose. Merg ing this procedure into your home and work life shows the seriousness in reducing landfill waste and will make a positive impact overall. Even if it is just a small percentage, the difference it will make will be well worth it.

As a business, GGR goes to the market searching for products that we feel will complement our existing product portfolio, but will also suit our target market. We are known as specialists, we have a very broad but deep product range. In terms of equipment, we normally have a lot of the exceptions and what that means in practice is that when someone cannot deliver [a certain product], GGR gets the job done. This is reflected in our approach towards innovation. When we meet new suppliers, it is typical for us to put our money where our mouth is. Normal hire companies would like see what the demand is like and then commit to a certain amount of capex based on a business case. Our approach is to say, we're going to take X amount of units and trial them. We then go back to the OEM and say, these are the issues we have found and we need to rectify them before this is suitable for the UK market. Then we’re in a position where we've got something which we can push with a level of gusto. To answer the question directly, this project has been two years in the making. Bear in mind, WE HAVE HAD THE FEEDBACK AND LISTENED TO WHAT THE CUSTOMERS ASKED AND SUGGESTED, THE PRODUCTS AS THEY STAND ARE THE RESULT OF THAT.

FUTURE WASTE we had Covid to deal with at the very beginning of this launch, but new battery technology is now the second iteration. We have had the feedback and listened to what the customers asked and suggested, the products as they stand are the result of that. The commercial environment was a lot different two years ago than it is today, two years ago it was just us in the market. Now there’s obviously competition. Some of these companies are just at the beginning of their journey, we expect them to face their own challenges, whereas today we’re well ahead of the game, especially from the battery perspective. Were there any major obstacles whilst you were going through this two year completion, and how did you go about those obstacles? You said about listening to the customers as well and taking on their feedback. There were two obstacles. One was obvious, being Covid, because the reality is people were shutting down shop while we were trying to push this product. That gave us an opportunity as lots of people were working from home and we were able to make contact with people who we might have struggled to engage with otherwise. In normal times, we might not have had the same level of cut-through with buyers, but lockdown allowed us to put this product in front of buyers who were stuck at home. When restrictions were lifted, we already had people who were wanting to see this equipment. The second is the very nature of innovation. Today, everybody you see on social media is distracted by novelty. There is a growing trend of companies saying they’re the first to do something and everybody is rushing to say they got there first. People like to be first. The reality is, to be truly innovative, you rarely get it right first time. You need a level of staying power and you need to have that two-way relationship where you take criticism on board, don't get over emotional, give rational feedback and allow things to develop - that's true innovation. Anybody who is looking to source the finished article straight off the bat might not necessarily get what they expect first time around. To be innovative means that you have to be prepared to co-develop the product. There's always something that would need to be adapted or improved to suit. So that's an obstacle that we found, everybody wants to be first, not everybody is as prepared for the process as they probably should be when dealing with innovative products. What do you think makes your product superior to others? And you discussed creating larger models for the range, is this something that's already been put in motion? Like you said, you're always changing and adapting. Naturally, bigger batteries lead themselves to bigger machines. We know as well as the increased battery capacity, there's been requests for increased reach and lifting capacity. So we're looking at that as the obvious next step. But at this moment in time, we 35

position where we’ve been a better position to react to the demand for electric and we've very much been able to focus on the electric product. We're building a reputation for being known for electric telehandlers specifically. Do you have any goals for 2023 that you're going to develop on within this specific product?

We want to maintain our position as the prominent and leading electrical telehandler company. Not just in the UK, but in the world. We believe with what we’ve done with the relationship between Faresin and GGR so far, we are leading the way for this type of equipment. Is there anything you would like to add in terms of product specificity?

I want to point out what we mean when we talk about usage time with this specific telehandler. These being up to 6, 8 and 10 hours use. Now what that is, is continuous use. So that's being constantly used, we're not talking about an eight hour shift or a 37 FUTURE WASTE don't have anything definitive to announce. You will have to watch this space! We just know that these batteries will enable us to advance this product range beyond the small kit. Whereas if you look at what other manufacturers are doing in terms of battery, everything seems to be small, whether it's small diggers, small dumpers or other small telehandlers. What we're saying is with the battery technology that we have available, this is a viable product beyond the smaller kit. In fact, we would go as far as saying battery technology needs to be taken seriously as a suitable option when it comes to larger equipment. It appears that people are quick to seek alternatives, such as hydrogen or other alternative fuel supplies, as they don’t yet appreciate the potential of battery power alone. Are there any areas you're looking to expand in particular, and then are there any other products that you wanted to look into to perhaps to develop on as well? When we're talking about this range of products in particular, we see larger capacity equipment being the next obvious step. In terms of any development, at this moment in time the development you see with the batteries is the culmination of two years work in the market. Where we see ourselves against the competition, we’re in a TO INNOVATIVE,TRULYBEYOU RARELY GET IT RIGHT FIRST TIME.

In reality, the equivalent shift is a lot longer as the need to constantly move up and down all day is rare. The nature of this type of product is that there is a lot of stop, start. There will also be various breaks throughout the day. If you take these figures as continuous use, then in terms of a shift, you're looking at around 50% to double the time that you can use the machine for in practice. Product Specifics: The batteries have been showcased in three 6.26 full electric telehandlers, the world’s first electric telehandlers, which were launched by Faresin in 2019. Load Assist’s highly sophisticated proximity sensor system employs radar and LiDAR technology, and is currently available as two options. The first option is the Rear Radar Detect system that activates au tomatically when reverse gear is selected. The view of the Co-pilot tablet switches to a reversing cam era, and the operator receives an audio-visual warning as the system detects objects approaching. Spectators, athletes and staff commuted, stayed in the area, attended events, and enjoyed the hospi tality over a two-week period. This significantly increased the production and use of materials, packaging and food – and so, inevitably, increased the amount of waste. Waste criminals can be discreet and attempt to avoid their wrongdoing by the Council and Environment, and in turn, avoid a large fine or the potential for prison time, depending on the seriousness of their illegal activity. The Environmental Services Association Education Trust released a compelling report and highlighted the most prominent waste crime incidents that have happened in 2021. Around four to five illegal waste sites were found up and down the UK, with some receiving a fine of £80,000 with the maximum time in prison being 25 months. These were largescale sites that were illegally disposing of up to 490 tonnes of waste, ranging from tyres to commercial waste; one site had 72 large skips full of asbestos. Some individuals may be trying to save some money by fly-tipping rubble into a local field and may be completely unaware of the severe consequences that could be waiting for them.

Companies are endlessly searching for cost savings right now and yet still readily accept a ritual change out of expensive oils, with transfer and waste disposal, without even knowing if the oil is ready to be condemned; and it rarely is.
