EXTEND ENGINE & HYDRAULIC OIL & FILTER CHANGES TO JUST ONCE YEARLY ON MOT

THERE IS NOW A COMMITMENT STRATEGY TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT PLANS TO TRANSITION VEHICLES & EQUIPMENT TO ZEV’S (ZERO EMISSION VEHICLES)

DIESEL OR ELECTRIC WITH HYDRAULICS; WHAT EASIER WAY TO ENHANCE THAT PLAN THAN TO SIMPLY ADD BY-PASS OIL FILTRATION?

Increase system reliability • Reduce component wear • Extend oil life to generate CO2 saving

Ensure oil cleanliness to Extend oil life

What is by-pass filtration?

Natural Cellulose Depth By-pass oil filtration – has an ultrafine, slow principle of cleansing and drying oils.

With an installation not dissimilar to a ‘kidney’ it takes a small feed of oil – cleans it to levels far finer than anything else, and returns it to tank, so as a constant cleansing pass the tank or sump, the lines and any parts in flow such as pumps and valves become clean of all contaminants.

By continuously filtering just a small percentage of oil to far finer levels than standard filters; it removes particulates, sludge and moisture that would normally be missed, and with modern fine machine tolerances, could cause system damage, wear and corrosion. At such a very slow and deliberate speed, it is possible to remove particles down to 1 micron (3 absolute), and remove 99.95% of all water. Removing such contamination slows down oil degradation so protecting its condition far longer.

How it works

Install a Bypass System at the time of a complete oil & filter change – then on your normal oil change – JUST change the by-pass replacement cartridge, nothing else! Then change all 3 at an agreed interval – normally once yearly. By eliminating water and particle contamination, you can extend engine oil life up to 5 times and hydraulic oil up to 10 times. Alternatively – a mobile system can be used to clean hydraulic oil, in tank, to ‘as clean as new oil standard’ ISO 18/16/13; on a routine basis, alongside condition monitoring.

The Carbon benefits

• PRIMARILY OIL SAVINGS – What was your oil spend last year? Consider if every machine on your site was to just double its oil life? You would half your oil consumption; as a finite resource and equally half your oil wastage, contributing to carbon savings throughout the entire supply chain.

• PARTS SAVINGS – Through constant cleanliness = less abrasion = better operation = equipment lasts longer, with less ‘blockages’, sticking valves or failing pumps… pumps seem to be an accepted consumable and they shouldn’t be if looked after properly – all these ‘replacement parts’ if reduced; contribute to not only financial but carbon savings throughout the supply chain.

• LABOUR & DOWNTIME – A simple 5 minute cartridge change, as opposed to oil drain and filter changes minimises downtime and labour costs.

• EFFICIENCEY – Cleaner, better operation will result in less downtime and interruption.

Cellulose depth is the only affordable filtration to effectively remove moisture and particulates in one process.

UNSAFE DISPOSAL OF ELECTRICAL ITEMS CAUSES DAILY FIRES:

VEOLIA

URGES CAUTION TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE

Veolia, the UK’s leading resource management company, has launched a UK-wide campaign to combat a rise in fires across its operations that has reached, on average, one preventable fire every day. The campaign aims to educate the general public on the dangers of certain waste items and how they put the people who handle waste in danger as well as cause damage to vital recycling infrastructure.

The fires occur across the country in Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCVs) in residential areas and in waste management facilities, due to residents putting dangerous items in their recycling or rubbish bins and on-street litter bins. This puts both Veolia staff and the general public in direct danger.

The campaign videos, published across social media, contain real footage of the fires and explosions caused and focus on the danger of four items that are commonly misplaced in household bins and how they can impact the people who collect, sort, and process waste.

Used vapes should be taken back to retailers, never placed in household recycling or rubbish bins or in on-street litter bins.

Electrical items – items with batteries, plugs, cables, or hidden batteries such as those found in children’s toys and electrical toothbrushes - can be recycled but they must be handled safely at dedicated facilities. Residents can find local recycling points at: recyclenow.com/recycling-locator Batteries can be easily recycled at dedicated recycling points, which can be found at:

recyclenow.com/recycling-locator

Gas bottles and nitrous oxide (Nox) canisters need to be handled safely during disposal. In most cases, residents needing to dispose of gas bottles or canisters can take them to their local Household Reuse and Recycling Centre, but this should be checked locally. Vapes, electrical items, batteries, and gas canisters become extremely flammable when they are crushed. This puts both collection crews and the staff at recycling and waste sorting and processing facilities

at risk of burns, chemical exposure and smoke inhalation – injuries that can be life-changing. It also causes damage to vital recycling infrastructure.

Residents can visit veolia.co.uk/ dangerous-waste to watch real footage of what happens when dangerous items enter the waste stream and learn more about how to safely dispose of these materials.

Cory Reynolds, Director of Corporate Affairs, Veolia UK, Northern Europe Zone, said: “At Veolia we pride ourselves on carrying out essential services whilst putting safety first in the workplace, and we do not accept our people or the communities we serve being put in danger. This campaign is necessary to educate residents on how to ensure their waste is safe, and we ask everyone to make these simple changes that will greatly decrease the chance of fires in collection vehicles and sorting facilities. This will have a huge impact on keeping the vital industry we work in safe and ensure that the people that handle waste are kept out of harm’s way whilst protecting the valuable materials residents work hard to separate for recycling.”

Veolia records one preventable fire a day from residents putting dangerous items in bins

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the danger real people face from vehicle and facility fires

Residents should not put vapes, electrical items, batteries, or gas canisters in the bin as they are extremely flammable when crushed

CONCRETE WASHOUT BEST PRACTICE

WHY should concrete washout procedures be implemented onsite?

• To comply with regulations

• To minimise waste and environmental impact

• To prevent contamination/pollution

• To promote responsible waste management

Wash water arising from the washing of equipment that has come into contact with concrete must be collected and, if possible, treated to enable recycling/ re-use within the wash down area or concrete batching process or safely disposed of.

Wash water (even when treated) must not be used for wheel washes or dust suppression purposes.

WHAT harm is caused by not having proper Concrete Washout procedures in place?

Concrete wash water is highly Alkaline making it hazardous to the skin and a pollutant to ground water and water courses.

Untreated liquid should not be disposed of onsite. If on site disposal is necessary, you will require authorisation from your environmental regulator.

You should put in place measures to control, store (and treat) concrete wash water and waste arising from concrete processes on site.

How to implement Concrete Washout Best Practice

Plan your works

Only order the amount of concrete or grout that you need.

Have a designated wash area

Concrete Mixers, Volumetrics, Pumps and concrete equipment must be washed out in a contained area, this area should be sited away from any watercourses or drainage channels to prevent accidental escapes of liquid or slurries to the water environment.

Prepare

Include information on treating the water to reduce its alkalinity, testing the water prior to disposal, and how the water will be disposed of in method statements and risk assessments. Organise and provide training, equipment and PPE where required.

Clear signage and labelling. Ensure your washout area has clear signage and any containers are correctly labelled to distinguish them from other waste or material storage areas.

Capture and treat Concrete Washout

Hire or purchase purpose made equipment to safely capture and treat concrete washout. Suitable equipment will consist of a method to separate solids from the washwater and neutralise the pH of the water.

Monitor Compliance

Implement a monitoring and compliance procedure to ensure concrete washout best practices are adhered to.

Who to hire/purchase Concrete Washout Equipment from?

Kelly Tanks provides compliant and conscientious solutions for treating waste water and concrete wash water on site. Their range is diverse, accommodating sites various requirements to include options for power or no power, closed loop or continuous discharge, single or double systems, automatic or manual pH control, liquid or CO2 dosing for pH control.

VEOLIA’S INNOVATIVE NEW ROCKDUST WILL ABSORB CARBON DIOXIDE AND BOOST SOIL HEALTH

Global resource management company, Veolia, is launching a new natural rock dust product that will boost soil health and help counter climate change by capturing inorganic carbon dioxide. The new product, called ProGrow Rockdust, has been selected to meet the diverse needs of every grower from the window box and patio tub gardener, to allotment holders and community gardeners and schools, to commercial growers, local authorities and landscape gardeners, and provides an organically approved way to increase healthy plant growth, and accelerate natural composting processes.

The new product comes from a little used by-product of the quarrying industry and is based on basic silicate rocks that have been scientifically shown to capture up to 25 percent of their weight in carbon dioxide when integrated with soil and compost. With an overall carbon footprint of significantly less carbon than other fertiliser and soil improver products, it is currently the only one to permanently capture the carbon. It does this by using the enhanced rock weathering process that takes carbon from the unstable biological cycle, and moves this into the stable geological cycle, a process which has been verified by Newcastle University who review the independent scientific analysis of Pro-Grow’s supplies on a regular basis.

Users to date have found that the Rockdust improves soil health and organic growing, as it contains all of the recognised macro and micro minerals and trace elements required for healthy soil. This also boosts the life in the soil, from bacteria to worms and supports the Nitrogen fixing bacteria that also capture organic carbon as they grow.

As it does not require the energy and carbon intensive processes needed to produce nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) based plant foods, the new Rockdust product will help growers by providing a natural solution for improving their soil. The resultant healthier plant growth, by using the rock dust, has also reduced the need for pesticides and herbicides according to reports from leading gardeners. Both the Soil Association and Organic Farmers and Growers have approved the ProGrow Rockdust for use on their certified growing systems.

Launched at the UK Horticulture Four Oaks Trade Show on September 3-4th , the Pro-Grow Rockdust product will be available in a range of sizes including 500g tubes for window boxes and patio growers, to 10kg bags for gardeners, and 0.5 tonne and 1 tonne bulk bags for professional growers.

This innovation illustrates Veolia’s ability to maintain its decarbonization trajectory. In fact, a few months after the launch of its new strategic GreenUp program, which plans to accelerate its decarbonization trajectory, Veolia has taken a significant new step in its climate strategy by obtaining the validation of its objectives by the Science Based Targets initiatives (SBTi), the international reference in this field. The SBTi notably praised the Group’s net-zero ambition, recognized as the most ambitious among those it tracks. Furthermore, the international rating agency Moody’s also analysed and recognized the quality of Veolia’s transition plan, awarding the company an overall score of NZ-2 (on a scale of NZ-1 to NZ-5), and praising the ambition and solidity of its short-term implementation. This is based in particular on the use of proven technologies by the Group as Veolia’s ProGrow Rockdust product.

By harnessing the enhanced rock weathering process Veolia’s ProGrow Rockdust product will help capture climate damaging carbon dioxide

ProGrow Rockdust supports soil health by adding key minerals and trace elements which encourage healthy plant growth to regenerate resources as set out in the GreenUp plan.

Launched in September, ProGrow Rockdust meets the needs of all growers from the window box and patio tub gardeners, to allotment holders and community gardeners and schools, commercial growers, local authorities and landscape gardeners.

At the heart of Veolia’s performance model, decarbonization is a powerful driver and a source of value creation for the Group and its clients in the long term. Veolia thus becomes the first company to obtain double validation of its climate commitments by two leading international organisations.

Donald Macphail, Chief Operating Officer – Treatment, at Veolia commented: “Thanks to Veolia’s innovative strength and in line with the objectives of the GreenUp Plan, Veolia’s launch of Pro-Grow Rockdust provides an ideal opportunity for gardeners and horticulturists to improve their soil health through the use of this natural material that boosts biological processes. Not only will it encourage healthier plant growth but it will enable all gardeners to accelerate the decarbonisation of their practices and to contribute to countering climate change by removing carbon dioxide.

“This is another example of how Veolia is taking action, with its GreenUp plan, to regenerate resources and accelerate the decarbonization in order to achieve ecological transformation at every scale.”
