BRIAN A. TUKES Born and raised in Macon, Georgia, Brian Alexander Tukes is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon and Phyllis Tukes. “Tukes,” as he is affectionately known, is a May 2012 Graduate of Fort Valley State University where he earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and a minor in American history. Brian serves as the public safety advisor to Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. In this capacity, Brian coordinates budget requests, policy, and legislation with the Department of Corrections, Pardon and Parole Board, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and 12 other state agencies. As a subsidiary duty, Brian coordinates policy and recommendations with advisory councils such as the Martin Luther King Civil Rights Commission and the Special Council on Criminal Justice Reform. While attending FVSU, Brian was active in the Student Government Association, Political Science Student Association, Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences, Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society, and was a Fall 2009 initiate of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. As a student, Brian made a concerted effort to join his peers in raising the social consciousness of the student body. While serving as vice president of the Political Science Student Association and with the assistance of Peach County Commissioner Michael Dinkins and Dr. Meigan Fields, Brian developed a community-wide voter education series which witnessed the registration of over 300 new voters. Also in this capacity, Brian worked to coordinate a two-part Tolerance Conference which for the first time facilitated an open academic discussion on race, religion, and homosexuality in the FVSU community. Deeply committed to educational attainment, Brian is completing his Master of Public Administration from the University of Georgia and serves as graduate student liaison for the Department of Public Administration and Policy. As a research assistant at UGA, Brian has the opportunity to research with leading scholars and even co-authored a policy memo to the RAND Institute titled “Housing our People with Aids: A Policy Focus for the Next Wave of Human Rights.” Aside from his professional and academic pursuits, Brian is heavily involved in community and religious affairs. He serves the African Methodist Episcopal Church as the international second-vice president of the Young People’s Division. Brian used this role to coordinate mission trips to Guyana, Zambia, South Africa, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Additionally, he restructured a scholarship initiative which manages to donate more than $25,000 annually to deserving college students. Despite his many commitments, Brian maintains a strong commitment to family, friendship, and brotherhood. In sum, Brian endeavors to live daily from the timeless adage that simply states: “If I can just help one person throughout my day, then my living is not in vain.”

THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING

O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; O say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Lift every voice and sing, Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won.

O thus be it ever when free man shall stand Between their loved home and the war’s desolation; Blest with victory and peace, may the Heaven-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto, “In God is our trust;” And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

-Francis Scott Key, 1775

THE ALMA MATER Fort Valley State! Fort Valley State! Our lives to thee we dedicate. Our souls we blend to sing thy name; Eternal praise we do proclaim.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee; Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand. True to our God, True to our native land.

Faithful and true, Fort Valley State, We at thy call, forever wait; We lift our hearts to thankfulness, For loyalty and thoroughness. -William H. Pipes We love to hear thy sweet name called; Thou art the dearest school of all. Our hearts to thee will e’er belong, Thou art so steadfast, brave and strong;

-Lyrics by James Weldon Johnson Music by John R. Johnson

We love thee so, Fort Valley State, Our loyalty we dedicate; Thy name forever we proclaim; Fort Valley State, We love thy name. -Odessa Hardison McNair, 1954
