SPRING 2012

Swinging, Sprinting and Scoring The spring athletic season always brings excitement to the campus. All sports are outdoors, the weather is getting warmer and the Falcons are sprinting to the finish line of the school year. FWCD teams enjoyed great success over the course of the season, which culminated with several Fort Worth venues hosting the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) Championships. The Falcons were well represented in SPC and continued to play strong and with great class and sportsmanship.

place at the SPC Championship Tournament, capping off an exciting four-year run for the five graduating seniors who finished their SPC careers with three third place finishes and one Division I Championship. Seniors Abby Cox, Emily Englander, Tara Gordon, Meaghan Houston and Erin Parker will be greatly missed. Their hard work, dedication, enthusiasm and competitiveness were appreciated by all. Several returning players are looking forward to continuing the success of the softball program.

FWCD baseball enjoyed a very successful season. The team finished 7-1 in zone play and tied for the North Zone title with the Episcopal School of Dallas. The Falcons went 2-1 in the SPC tournament to earn a thirdplace finish in Division I. Highlights of the season included wins over Nolan Catholic, Stephenville, Keller Central, Southwest Christian and two seventh-inning, come-frombehind wins at Holland Hall and Casady.

Track and field had a prosperous season. Throughout the course of the season, several athletes broke multiple school records and many others set personal bests.

The team was led by 10 seniors Matt Beasley, Thomas Boucher, Matt Davis, Chase Hale, Michael McGarry, Reid Meyer, Antonio Mireles, Kevin Murphy, Kelly Puls and Daniel Steinbrenner. These seniors will be missed, but the future looks bright for Falcon baseball. The softball team finished its season in third

Sophomore Maddy Stripling is now the school record holder in the 800-meter run, 1600-meter run and 3200-meter run. Additionally Maddy earned SPC Honorable Mentions in the 3200 and 1600 at the SPC meet. Senior golfers Hunter Marrow, Stephen Levy, Whit Maddox and Blake Waltrip Sophomore McKenna Breedlove finished the season as the school record holder in the discus. Her throw of more than 107 feet at the SPC meet was good enough for fourth place and a school record. McKenna finished her sophomore season in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, placing her third in the conference and earning All-SPC Honors. Senior Walker Ryan finished his track and field career with an outstanding performance at SPC. His throw of 150’8” in the discus earned him third place in the conference and All-SPC Honors.

Other track and field athletes receiving honors at SPC this season were Clinton Harlin ’14 (Pole Vault), Jackson Hull ’13 (Pole Vault) and Akeira Warner ’14 (Shot Put)--all receiving SPC Honorable Mention.

The boys golf team had one of its best seasons in years. The team won the All Saints’ Episcopal School Kent Henning Invitational. The team finished the SPC Tournament in sixth place, the best finish for FWCD boys golf in more than a decade. Freshman Turner MacLean was a medalist in several tournaments, including Henning, John Cooper Invitational and Dallas Jesuit. The boys played consistently throughout the season and were led by senior Stephen Levy. The team will miss Stephen who was a leader on and off the course. Senior Walker Ryan earned All-SPC Honors.

Freshman Sawyer Stratton had great performances this year in the 800-meter run, 1600-meter run and 3200-meter run. Sawyer was consistently ranked in the top five in his events throughout the season. During his final run at SPC, Sawyer finished third in the 1600-meter run, which was one of the heaviest contested fields in the conference in years. Sawyer’s time of 4:35.33 helped him earn All-SPC honors.

Girls tennis finished as Division II runners-up at SPC this year. Freshman Christina Paulus finished the season undefeated at the No. 1 singles line. The team is sad to lose senior captain Claire Buechele, but is excited about the prospects of its young team members and strong upperclassmen who are returning next year.

Girls golf participated in five tournaments, including the Dallas Invitational, St. John’s Invitational and John Cooper Invitational. FWCD hosted the annual Hooton Cup Tournament at Pecan Valley. The team was led by captains Megan Ray ’13 and Haddy Self ’13. The captains along with Clare Wilson ’13, Meg Moritz ’15 and Caroline Malanga ’15 finished eighth at SPC, where all the Falcons shot their personal best scores.

Isabella Chieffalo ’14 earned SPC Honorable Mention. Boys tennis finished third place in Division II at SPC this year. Seniors Cameron Slife, Chris Manning, James Chilcoat and Jay Kurani will be hard to replace on next year’s team. A highlight of the season was Chilcoat’s run of seven straight wins to end the season and conference play at line three singles. This season was a tremendous step in the continued building of the Falcon lacrosse program. The team and coaches had a lot of fun, and

many players improved dramatically throughout the season. Several new players joined the veterans on varsity, and, as the season continued, the rookies stepped up and constructed a strong foundation for the future. The team will miss its two seniors and captains, Cameron Fraser and Hunter Vick, for not only giving their all their entire career, but also for standing as the leaders of the team through thick and thin.

Turner MacLean ’15 received the Most Improved Golfer Award.

Crosby Lipscomb ’14 received the Most Improved Baseball Award.

At the lacrosse SPC Tournament, Falcons played quality games with wins against St. Mary’s Hall of San Antonio and St. Andrew’s Episcopal of Austin. The team fell by 1 point to St. Stephen’s of Austin early in the season, which led to the Falcons finishing third in Division II. The team was knocked out of the state playoff run due to four regular season 1-point games. With a large junior class this year, the team is optimistic for next season. Congratulations to the seniors, and thank you to everyone who supported the team. As the school year comes to an end, it is always bittersweet. These graduating seniors have left an incredible legacy. Over the past four years, there have been five SPC Championship teams, four runner ups, and nine of the 2012 graduates have made commitments to take their game to the college level. To the seniors: thank you. We have thoroughly enjoyed watching you grow and mature. And to those of you not graduating, we challenge you to continue the strong and positive legacy our former athletes have left. 3
