Baseball
The FWCD baseball program had another busy summer in 2014. We had two teams compete in the North Tarrant Baseball League (varsity and JV). The varsity team finished with a record of 6-3, and the JV had a 5-4 mark. The focus of these games was not about winning or losing, rather, it was about returning players taking advantage of a great opportunity to play and compete at positions they will be expected to fill in the 2015 spring season. For the younger players, the summer provided an opportunity to play for Coach Brady Benoit for the first time, helping them relax and get used to his coaching style. Another benefit: Benoit was able to see what the upcoming players are capable of doing in game situations. Lastly, a big thanks from the entire baseball program to Dennis Heinrichs and Denver Edmunds of Plant Operations for preparing the field for the games! The program also put on the second FWCD Baseball Camp during the first week of July. The camp was a ton of fun and a great success. More than 60 campers attended and learned everything from pitching and fielding to hitting and bunting. The campers ended each day with the Whiffle Ball World Series and concluded at the end of the week with the ever-popular slip-n-slide to practice sliding. Camp was a lot of fun, and we hope to see everyone back
Boys’ Basketball
Basketball had one of its largest skills camps ever over the summer. The camp was for students in grades 1-8, and several high school players helped to coach. Two Upper School teams and four Middle School teams competed in the FWCD Summer League. This was the biggest year of the league with 28 total teams (boys, girls, Upper School and Middle School). The varsity boys’ team finished 10-5.

next summer. Coach Benoit would like to thank Clinton Carter ’14, Ryan Burke ’15, Marshall Dike ’16, William Sheats ’16, Austin Westermann ’16, James Ferguson ’16 and Branson Nelson ’16 for helping out with the camp. The boys will spend the fall in the weight room and get started with individual workouts during the winter season to get ready for February 2! If you have any questions about the FWCD baseball program please contact Coach Benoit at brady.benoit@fwcd.org.

Soccer
Soccer continued their tradition of largely successful summer camps at FWCD. Three camps took place: boys and girls ages 5-10, girls ages 10-18 and boys ages 10-18. Attendance proved to be strong again with more than 200 kids participating.
Track
Coaches Mark Brady and Brian Farda held two speed camps over the summer. The camps were designed to help all students become more explosive and learn proper sprinting technique. They also worked on handling the mental challenges that come from competing in sports to help them become as successful as possible. While the camp took place on the track, the coaches hoped that the take-away would be beneficial to any sport an athlete plays.
Cross Country
Joseph Breedlove ’17 and his team were the runners-up in the Championship Bracket of the largest tournament hosted in Texas. Boys’ basketball also sent three teams to the Azle Shoot Out on July 11-12. The Middle School eighth-grade team finished as champions out of 12 teams. JV finished fourth out of 12, and varsity finished seventh out of 16. A highlight for the varsity was beating 4A state powerhouse Burkburnett High School. Two players competed on National AAU teams. Joseph Breedlove ’17 and his team were the runners-up in the Championship Bracket of the largest tournament hosted in Texas (including teams from all over the nation), the Super 72 Great American Shoot Out. Sean Smith ’17 and his team participated in the same tournament and reached the semifinals in the Gold Bracket.
The cross country team was hard at work this summer logging miles and getting ready for the fall racing season. From June to August, the team logged more than 2,200 miles. The team also spent time in the weight room getting stronger, attended summer cross country camps and raced in various community races that spanned across not only Texas and the U.S., but also around the globe in Spain. The athletes are looking forward to the season as they continue to build on their successes from past seasons.
Field Hockey
Field hockey started off the summer with the “kids” camp at FWCD. Several girls in grades 2-8 were coached by the high school players, alumni and varsity coaches. Highlights of the camp are always the Wacky Olympics, Steal the Bacon and scrimmaging. Twenty-nine girls traveled to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for a team camp. For the first time ever, FWCD was able to field two teams. The girls had a great time learning new skills, playing games and getting to know one another. Kate Laughlin ’15
and Christina Kelly ’18 earned the Will to Win awards for their respective teams. The last couple days of summer, Gateway Field Hockey Camp came to FWCD. There were several players that participated and enjoyed some of the “cool” days of summer. The Falcons have worked hard all summer and are already in uniform for the fall season and hard at work! Check out the Athletics website to get the most up-to-date schedules so you can come cheer on your Falcons!
Girls’ Basketball
The FWCD girls’ basketball team (Natalie Clifton ’16, Alyse Bilardi ’16, Sydney Stripling ’17, Ryleigh Rains ’17, Samantha Burke ’18, Kathleen Clum ’18, Hannah Peeples ’18) participated in the FWCD Summer League. The girls played a total of 10 games over five weeks. Stripling, Peeples and Taylor Symonds ’19 played for Team Texas Express this summer and traveled around the state to compete in AAU tournaments.
The annual Football Moms Clinic: Each year the FWCD football coaches invite the football moms to come out and learn the Xs and Os of the game. Each mom then plays their son’s position to try and understand the game a little better. Following the clinic, the mothers, sons and coaches enjoy dinner together.
