FALCON ATHLETICS For t Wor th Country Day Athletic Wrap-up Summer 2015 INSIDE THIS ISSUE

WE ARE FALCONS! This summer marked an exciting time for Falcon athletics. Athletes were busy preparing for the 2015-16 school year, and we had the arrival of our new strength and conditioning coach, Shane Jenke. The School also celebrated the groundbreaking for the new tennis complex and Patton Field House. Big things are happening for the Falcons, and we are excited.

BASEBALL It was another busy summer for the FWCD baseball program. Beginning the last week in May, the boys held team and individual practices on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and played a scrimmage game on Wednesdays. This lasted through the end of June. FWCD also held its FWCD Baseball Camp (June 1-5) for the third straight year and had a blast. There were more than 60 campers (ages 6-12) that attended and learned the basic fundamentals of the game. The camp was taught by current FWCD coaches and players. Everyone had a great time. Baseball had two collegiate commitments take place over the summer. Jake McCoy ’15 signed to continue his career at the University of Dallas. James Ferguson ’16 verbally committed to play at North Carolina State University and will sign his letter of intent in November.

SOFTBALL

CHEERLEADING On Friday, August 7, 40 enthusiastic cheerleaders headed to Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine for the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Cheer Camp. Both squads learned dances, cheers and stunts to perform at different athletic games throughout the year. On the final day of camp, Monday, August 10, varsity and JV teams performed all routines learned while at camp in front of the UCA coaches. Seven different schools performed the same routines as well. FWCD’s varsity squad earned 1st place overall in the Extreme Routine (dance), 1st in Game Day Ready (cheer, chant and dance), 2nd place in Cheer, as well as the Traditions Award (best school traditions and cheer program). JV earned the outstanding team award. Whitney Kelly ’16 was named All-American Cheerleader. Both teams had so much fun while improving their skills and creating an amazing bond with their teammates and coaches.

FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey players were busy this summer. The girls enjoyed their new summer training program with Coach Shane Jenke. The high school players kicked off the summer helping with the field hockey camp hosted here at FWCD for Lower School and Middle School students. They always enjoy working with the future of Falcon field hockey. Twenty-seven players traveled to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in July for their team camp. Helen Holloway ’18 earned the “Will to Win” award. Several girls participated in the Gateway camp hosted at FWCD and received postcamp awards. 2

Three players from FWCD competed at the National Softball Tournament at the Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) in Huntington Beach, California. With more than 100 teams from across the nation having earned a berth to this tournament by winning a qualifying tournament, the competition was intense. It’s also one of the largest collegiate recruiting events for softball. Three FWCD players attended the tournament on three different teams: Samantha Burke ’18, Kathleen Clum ’18 and CJ Landrum ’18. Clum’s team had almost 50 college coaches that tracked them during the tournament. The team finished 21st and wished they would have done better, but the girls know they left it all on the field. Landrum spent the summer traveling with her team. When asked what her greatest experience was this summer, she replied: “Playing in the USA Junior Olympic Cup (JO Cup) tournament and eating at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles.” While playing in the JO Cup, she was evaluated by the USA softball coaching staff and the Women’s National Team Selection Committee and will be receiving an invitation to try out for the 2017 National Team. Adele Elkind ’16 played for a U16 softball team that traveled all around the nation playing in some of the biggest and most competitive tournaments. It was her second summer with this team and second summer attending nationals. The team went to Triple Crown Nationals in Lake Tahoe and was seeded 18th going into the tournament. She said the opportunity to play in a national tournament was an incredible experience, but getting a vacation out of it also made it her favorite trip. She rode Sea-Doos and cliff jumped in the lake, and said the best part was the gorgeous scenery and atmosphere. It was a great, but busy, summer of softball.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Girls’ basketball competed in the FWCD Summer League for five weeks. Samantha Burke ’18, Kathleen Clum ’18, Hannah Peeples ’18, Kaitlyn Johnson ’19, Adriana Barker ’19, Julia Atkinson ’19, Ashley Truong ’17, Sydney Stripling ’17, Alyse Bilardi ’16 and Kenzie Carter ’21 all played and were coached by former FWCD player Courtney Reimer Arnold ’11. Peeples, Johnson and Carter participated and traveled with AAU basketball throughout the summer. Carter also participated in the Sister Cities Tricolore International Youth Sports Games in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Her team won the gold medal.

Kenzie Carter ’21 participated in the Sister Cities Tricolore International Youth Sports Games in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Her team won the gold medal.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL FWCD hosted a skills camp at the beginning of the summer that drew more than 110 campers from grades 1-8. This marked the largest attendance to date. The boys’ teams also participated in the FWCD Summer League. FWCD had three Upper School teams and five Middle School teams, boasting the highest participation to date with more

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING The weight room had many athletes come through its door to train and get better at their respective sports this summer. Summer marks one of the most important seasons for all sports: the off-season. During this time, not only do athletes manage to get more athletic while simultaneously increasing strength and speed, but they also reduce their risk for injury. It was also an opportune time for teammates to bond and to help push one another through the tough times, with the ultimate goal of making the team better. Many of the athletes displayed a positive attitude, while learning new movement patterns. There is still a lot of ground to cover, but those athletes that came and put the time in every day have established a good foundation to build on. than 80 players. The varsity squad finished the league 10-4.

TENNIS

Two players competed on summer Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball teams. Sean Smith ’17 played on one of the top teams in the nation, “Team Texas 2016.” He traveled all over the nation earning honors and was named one of the top 25 performers in the Atlanta Showcase. His prowess over the summer has helped place him as one of Texas’s sought-after recruits in the 2017 class. Joseph Breedlove ’17 also played on a top AAU team, “PYF 2017.” His team made it to the quarterfinals in the championship bracket of the Super 72 Great American Shootout, the largest tournament hosted in Texas.

Westen Mulqueen ’18 and Harris Podell ’18 spent their summer competing in several mid-cities tournaments. Podell won a tournament at Rivercrest Country Club.

SOCCER Summer happenings in soccer were much the same as in previous years. FWCD hosted three great camps for boys and girls ages 5-17 and more than 200 players attended. The camps were a great success. Everyone had a lot of fun and learned a great deal too.

VOLLEYBALL Volleyball offered open gym once a week throughout the summer. The players were able to come and learn a few things, play and have fun. Head of School Eric Lombardi even came by to watch the students play. Camille Staid ’19 participated in the 2015 USA Volleyball Nationals Competition this summer in New Orleans. She plays for Tejas 14.1 and participated in the most competitive division. Her team did well in the competition, placing 25th overall in the country. With the summer behind us, the Falcons are primed for competition. Check out our schedules and come cheer on your Falcons! 3
