DESIGN CONCEPT PERSPECTIVES VIEW ENFRAMEMENT This site enjoys spectacular views but they are wasted... because it is not well-framed. Thus this concept is all about enframing the views. Plantings are used as visual cues, highlighting and concealing the views. This is assisted by the redesign of the path and modification of landform, which manipulates people’s view angles, and visually creates an isolated viewing stage and elevates the site respectively. Plants with fine-textured foliage will be used dominantly in this concept.

ABPL90173 ADVANCED PLANTING DESIGN 2017 WINTER TERM PROJECT 2 IRIS WAI TUNG FONG 636813

This site is one of the more challenging sites for garden making in the University. Sitting on a small hill among the sports fields, it sets up a harsh environment for plants given its compacted soil and exposed land surface. What makes the site even worse is the shadow casted by the existing River Red Gums, which either leaves the future plants unsheltered from the hot sun in the summers, or overshadows the plants in the cold winters. However, these conditions do not render the site an unsuitable location for a garden. Regarding the elevated position of the site, people can enjoy a spectacular view which allow them to view the city and part of the University. 3 The views also change when people traverse the site, concealing and unfolding interest spots as people walk. This can be used to create a sense of myster y, encouraging people to explore the site. /

DEVELOPMENT PROCESS THE THREE GROUPS

STRUCTURE

SUPPORTING

TEMPORARY

With the parameters set up for each zones, I decided to develop the concept further by disintegrating each zones into finer elements and categorizing them into three main groups, which are structures, supporting and temporar y. The existing eucalyptus are identified as visual pillars, which ser ve as the starting point of my ‘plant matching’ process. All this helps me visualising the planting group in a more detailed manner.

ZOOM-IN For the developed design, I choose the secret garden, one of the pillars and its adjacent borders as my focus area. The main consideration of the main structural group is, first, if they can grow under the massive eucalyptus, and second, if they can create a contrast to the adjacent fine-textured borders. For the two borders, I want one of them to be grassland-like in order to create the air y and feather y feeling. For the other border, it will be the ground for Lamiaceae and acacias as both of them are highly recognizable (plus they enjoy a higher preference in my palette).
