It’s Give It A Go Week! Everybody say yeah!

The new year is the perfect time to try something new. Need some motivation? We’ve got a week-long programme packed full of activities for you to try, most of which are free! Want to join the gym? Volunteer in the local community? Try a new sports club or society? Go green? Find out more about fundraising challenges? There really is something for everyone, so check out our calendar of events and get involved! All events are free unless specified.

Horseriding: Beginners’ Lesson 15:30 – 16:30

This session costs £16.20

Wheal Buller Riding School A riding lesson for complete beginners. Working in walk with a bit of trotting!

Expedition: Map Reading and Navigation Workshop 17:00 – 19:00 Penryn Campus, DDM Seminar M An introduction to map reading and navigation for anyone interested in the outdoors. This will also be useful for anyone on a course with fieldwork, or who wants to improve their navigation.

Underwater Hockey

Free for first timers (usually £5 to cover 18:15 – 21:00 pool hire & fuel) Truro School but pick up from Penryn Campus bus stop Have a go at underwater hockey (aka octopush). Learn to push a puck whilst snorkelling and have a short game at the end. All you need is swimming gear but if you have a snorkel, fins (not clips-ons) and a mask please bring them. Sign up at FXU.


EcoSoc: Bird Ringing 07:00 – 09:00 Penryn Campus Meet outside The Exchange (revolving doors) Have a close look at, and handle, a variety of birds and gain knowledge on bird ringing techniques.

CSM Ladies’ Lacrosse 18:00 – 19:30 Penryn Campus, MUGA Come and join the ladies’ lacrosse team in their training session. If you’ve never played before, you will definitely learn to love it!

Penryn College TISA This is a great time for any ability to get involved in the mixed sport of Ultimate Frisbee; a sport that encourages good team work and having fun above all else! (Meet at Glasney Lodge at 18:45 if you want to be shown the way)

Volleyball Training Session 19:00 – 21:00 Penryn Campus, Sports Centre Hall Come along to FXU Volleyball for an introductory session to the social sport of volleyball!

The Chorus: Rehearsal 19:30 – 21:30 Penryn Campus, The Chapel Lecture Theatre Lots of friendly faces, a good old sing song and some biscuits thrown in as well! We’re an informal, a capella choir that likes to mix up old tunes as well as arranging modern chart hits, aimed at all singing abilities!

CSM Mens’ Lacrosse 19:30 – 21:00 Penryn Campus, MUGA Come and join the mens’ lacrosse team in their training session. Even if you’ve never played before, you will definitely learn to love it!


EcoSoc: Mammal Trapping 07:30 – 09:00 Penryn Campus,meet outside The Exchange (revolving doors) Join us in a survey of all the small mammals on campus! Have the chance to gain skills in survey techniques and handling of wood mice, voles and shrews.

Penryn Campus, TH Seminar Z Come along and join FemSoc for discussions about what we do, feminist politics and talks from members about literature, music, art and more that interests them in an introduction to feminism.

Tremough Quidditch Environmental Sustainability: Communications Tree 16:00 – 17:00 Penryn Campus, Exchange Seminar Green Meet others who are working on sustainable projects. We’re looking at sustainable earning: is it better to boycott unethical companies or work to change them from within?

17:00 – 19:00 Penryn Campus, MUGA Come along to a chilled introduction to the sport that is Quidditch; whether you are a fan of the Harry Potter books or not you are more than welcome to give it a try, just come in comfortable sports clothing and some trainers and you are good to go!

Debate and Pizza Evening 17:00 – 19:00 Penryn Campus, PL Seminar 6 Come along to our friendly debate and pizza evening to watch or take part in a debate on a contemporary issue in society. The motion will be decided on the night. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience!

WildDoc Soc Guest Lecture: George Stoyle 17:30 – 19:30 Tickets Penryn Campus, TBC DDM Lecture A British Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2016.

Paganism Today 18:00 – 19:30 Penryn Campus, PL Lecture 4 The Pagan Rep from the Cornwall Faith Forum will deliver a talk on what it means to be a Pagan in contemporary society.

FXU Cheerleading 18:00 – 21:00 Penryn Campus, AMATA Studio A Expect to get a proper sweaty workout and have loads of fun throwing people/getting thrown yourself in the air! Wear sports kit and trainers (no Converse, please) and bring plenty of water and energy!

Granite Planet Climbing Centre Come join the CUC Climbing Club for a fun and friendly introduction to indoor climbing! We’ll teach you the essential skills necessary to climb indoors, as well as letting you test your skills on the centre’s climbing routes!

Viva Voce: Taster Session 19:00 – 20:30 Penryn Campus, The Chapel Lecture Theatre An opportunity to try out the university chamber choir. Sessions are open to all abilities and are non-audition.

FSKC Kayaking: Pool Session 19:00 – 21:00

£5/hour for pool hire

Falmouth, Ships & Castles pool Learn some skills and play some games in the warmth and safety of the pool. We’ll head to Fives afterwards for a drink and some chips as well! Sign up on our Facebook page: Falmouth Student Kayak Club.

Kung Fu: New Year, New You! 19:45 – 21:45 Free for Penryn Campus, first timers Sports Centre Studio Cardio, pad drills, shaolin forms and enough exercise to remove the guilt about eating so much over Christmas!

British Red Cross: Advocacy Awareness and Missing Maps Mapathon 17:00 – 19:00 Penryn Campus, DDM Seminar E Do you want to help those in need only using your laptop? Come along to find out more about the Missing Maps project which helps aid in developing countries. You will also be able to find out more about the Red Cross and its current advocacy campaigns.

Penryn College STP A chance to find out why American Football is the UK’s fastest growing sport, what the sport is about and see the current team in action. Meet at Glasney Lodge at 19:30 if you want to be shown the way.

Expedition: Around Tintagel 07:15 – 17:00 This session Coach from Falmouth costs £8 TBC Moor and Campus. Walk from Boscastle to Trebarwith This 8 mile walk along the north coast will give members stunning views of various landscapes, as well as the opportunity to explore historic Tintagel.

Environmental Sustainability: Trash Talks! 10:00 – 15:00 Penryn Campus, meet at The Walled Garden Sustainability starts with waste management. Sign up to the campus composting scheme and spend a day digging holes and talking trash!

Sea Swimming

13:00 Falmouth, Gylly Beach (by the benches) Come and join us for one of our weekly sea swims, even if you just fancy a quick dip in the shallows. Then we’ll head to Harbour Lights for some chips to warm up!

FSKC Kayaking: Beach Day!

Falmouth, Gylly Beach Come join us on Gylly beach, rain or shine we’ll be there with a BBQ or two and some kayaks for the brave!

Falmouth, The Moor bus stop On this 10K run, we will be running up to Pendennis Point and then along a scenic coastal path to Maenporth Beach, before heading back to the bus stop.

Ladies Football 15:00 – 16:30 Falmouth School grass pitches A light taster session for anyone thinking about getting into football.
