THE PARALLEL REALITIES

CONTEXT In this project, we were required to pick a site with rich a historical background. I chose the church of the holy infant Jesus ( now better known as CHIJmes ), due to how it’s sacred past as a convent and orphanage, greatly differs it’s present purpose - that of being a well-known for it’s drinking scene and nightlife. I strived to create a happy marriage between the past and the present, when my research led to understand that, in both the past and present, the site is mainly used as a place for matrimonial processions.Thus, my current program for this project is called “Matrimonial Orphanage”, where single people (“Orphans”) in Singapore embark on a journey through the form to pick up domestic skills, find their singnificant other, and get married. The goal of this project is to teach us to respect and better appreciate a site’s historical context - incorporating this information into the present design of the architecture.
