We generate data day in, day out: on computers, with digital cameras, and on our smartphones. While the volume
of data is growing, storage media are expected to become smaller and faster. However, some components have almost reached the limits of what is physically possible. A new generation of storage technology – resistive RAM (ReRAM) – is already on the horizon. Jülich researchers are considered pioneers in this area. They have demonstrated that the memory cells on which ReRAMs are based have another, unexpected property: they are a type of minuscule battery.
