Pumps with solar technology for fountains

The depletion of fossil resources and the fight against greenhouse gas emissions increasingly require the use of renewable energy sources.

The SolarMax® series from Ubbink works independently of the mains by using solar energy with the aid of solar modules. Nevertheless, sometimes you want the pump to work in the evening or when the sky is cloudy. Our solar pumps with battery have an integrated "Interchange Power Control" switch that automatically accesses the power supply when the battery is empty. Power Control is also sold separately. SolarMax® ensures a positive ecological footprint and low electricity bills.

SolarMax® 250, 600, 1000 and 2500

SolarMax® is a “stand-alone” synchronous Pump that draws its energy directly from the sun’s rays as soon as they touch the solar panel. An ideal solution for a pond whose location does not allow a power supply to the Pump.

SolarMax® Accu is a synchronous pump that draws its energy directly from the sun's rays as soon as they hit the solar module. It is coupled to a continuously operated energy store until it has reached its maximum load capacity. Ideal for operating the pump even in cloudy weather or at night. And if the energy is still insufficient, these pumps have an "Interchange Power Control" switch integrated into the battery, which switches to normal power consumption when the solar panel battery cannot be charged. This ensures that the pump can run for 24 hours without interruption. The pump is designed to operate with direct current (DC). The adaptor can be used to connect the pump to the main alternating current (AC) power source.

UV-C devices for a biological balance and a “clear water”

AlgClear® is a short-wave device with ultraviolet radiation (wavelength: 253.7 nm); it is extremely effective against green algae and germs in the pond water, and without any harmful effect on plants and fish. The water is clarified and purified. UV-C devices are used in combination with a pond filter, where filter mats and filter media catch the clumped algae and other impurities. AlgClear® has two outlet options on opposite sides. This gives you the option to choose the one that is more suitable. The second outlet is closed with a blind plug. Due to the spiral predetermined water rotation, AlgClear has a long retention time of the water in the plunger and as such, a more effective UV exposure. The supply of oxygen in the pond is vital for the flora and fauna especially in summer when its consumption is high and in winter when the pond is covered with a layer of ice. The treatment of pond water

The biological treatment of pond water requires controlling the parameters of the water by first measuring it regularly in order to be able to perform a diagnosis. This is why Ubbink® offers a unique product solution in the four stages of clear and healthy water that meets the “Clear water” guarantee.

Aqua MultiTest

The first step is to test the pond water’s values.

The second step consists of mine- ralising the pond water which is an essential first step to a good balance between the balance of GH - KH - pH values.

The third step is to clean the pond water. This step is more curative and necessary to remove any elements preventing clear and healthy water such as, for example, an excess of algae leading to eutrophication of the aquatic environment or to an abun- dant presence of pollutants such as phosphate or the like.

Finally, the fourth step consists of maintaining the pond water to main- tain the natural bacterial filtration by seeding the filter or the surroundings of the pond water with bacteria to synthesise the majority of the pollutants.

The different factors influencing poor quality water:

✓ Sunshine from the upper pond for 5-6 hours a day.

✓ Siltation pushed by too much foliage at the bottom of the pond making the decomposition of organic matter difficult.

✓ Too many fish in the pond.

The Aqua MultiTest test strips measure six indicators of the water status of the pond: pH, GH, KH, NO2, NO3 and CI2. Easy to use, the result is available within a minute. Aqua Start

Aqua Start is a liquid pond water care product ensuring a good biological balance and developing the following properties:

✓ Aqua Start stabilizes the acidity level (pH) of the water in the pool at a value between 6.5 and 7.5. Water is called “Alkaline” <6.5 - 7.5> Water is called “Acid” (basic).

✓ Aqua Start binds to toxic substances that may be present in the pond water such as chlorine and heavy metals.

Aqua PH-® is a liquid product that rebalances the mineral balance of pond water by rapidly lowering a high pH value (> 8 or alkaline). The pH is an indicator of the amount of acid in the pond water and its optimum value is between indices 7 and 8.

Aqua GH+®

Aqua GH+® is a product in the form of granulates that helps to increase the overall hardness of water; based on mineral salts and trace elements for silt mineralisation and phosphate precipitation. An optimal GH is between 8 and 12 °dGH or more.

✓ 100 g per m³ increases the °dGH value by 1 unit for 24 hours.

✓ Rainwater and drought conditions naturally lower the GH value.

✓ Renewing a quarter of the pond water volume is recommended if the GH value is greater than 15 °dGH.

Aqua KH+®

Aqua KH+® is a product in the form of granulates that helps to increase the KH of water (carbonate hardness); based on mineral salts and trace elements, it contributes to pH stabilisation by reducing the harmful effect of many toxic substances (e.g. heavy metals) in a solution in water. Aqua KH+® strengthens the effect of bacteria, improves biological filtration, helps silt mineralisation and causes phosphate precipitation making water clearer. The ideal KH value is between 4 °dKH and 8 °dKH; below 4 °dKH, the pH value fluctuates and is a danger to fish health; above 8 °dKH, the water reacts alkaline.

✓ 25 g per m³ increases the °dKH value by 1 unit for 24 hours.

✓ Rainwater and drought conditions naturally lower the KH value.

✓ Too low a value is detrimental to the filtration and development of plants and fish with a risk of pH instability; the supply of bacteria and minerals (calcium, magnesium) to fish is disturbed.

Feeding pond fish is an essential element for the beauty, colour, health, growth and reproduction of fish while maintaining “Clear water” in the pond. The koi, emperor of ponds is a fast-growing fish. Its food consumption depends on the temperature of the water and peaks in summer. The amount of food distributed daily represents, depending on the season, between 0.7 and 2% of its weight. You must feed it by splitting the daily ration into 4 or 5 meals a day.

Koi Feeder – SOLAR®Automatic solar fish feeder

This solar-powered automatic fish feeder regularly and reliably provides garden pond fish with food. Feeding can be individually adjusted to the requirements and number of fish. An ideal solution with feeding intervals from one to a maximum of six feeds per day, whereby the duration of the feed can also be specified (up to 20 seconds). In addition, the food is sprayed into the pond at a horizontal angle of 120 with a range of your choice (three settings from one to three metres). The energy-saving solar operation stores solar energy, to release it on less sunny days. This also ensures the fish are looked after in the event of longer absences.

Pond Construction

Preformed ponds

UBBINK® offers the widest selection of preformed ponds on the market. They are made in three types of material:

✓ polyethylene by a stamping process.

✓ high density polyethylene by a rotational moulding process.

✓ polyester by a contact moulding process based on a polyester catalysed resin.

The pond shapes vary greatly: some are strictly geometric, others have natural forms with banks, marshy areas and planting levels at different depths. With more than 40 years of experience, all preformed polyethylene ponds are TÜV certified. This is why UBBINK® can unhesitatingly offer a 10 or 15-year guarantee for preformed ponds.

The steps for installing a preformed pond

1 - Choosing the right location

The most appropriate location to promote the biological balance of the pond has a maximum of 6 hours of sunlight in a semi-shaded area, with the presence of few trees to prevent the water from being loaded with leaves and other nutrients.

2 - Mark out the shape of the pond on the ground

Place the preformed pool in the desired location and mark the contours of the pool with, for example, wooden stakes. Indicate on the ground the deeper inner areas.

3 -

Excavate

and cover the bottom with sand

First dig out the deepest part, then shape the different areas and finally the edge of the pond. The hole should be about 10 to 15 cm wider and deeper than the actual size of the pond. It is vital to remove any stones and roots from the hole thus formed and to put a bed of about 10 cm of sand on the bottom. Pack down tightly to create a flat and stable bottom.

4 - Position the preformed pond

The first step in the positioning of the preformed pond in the hole is to check that the dimensions are satisfactory. With a spirit level, make any adjustments necessary for a level installation. Finally, fill the pond with water to ¼ of its depth to prevent the preformed pool from moving during filling.

5 - Slurry with sand

After the pond has been partially filled, the cavities around the pond must be filled with sand. Here, it is helpful to first carefully fill in the sand all around and then gradually slurry it in evenly with a garden hose and plenty of water. This is the only way to ensure that the sand settles into even the smallest cavities and prevents the pond from sin- king. The sand should settle in between and the water should seep away. If necessary, repeat the process and fill the pond completely.

6 - Plant and decorate the surroundings

Water plants can be installed as soon as the pond has been filled. You can also plant up the edges of the pond with shoreline and rockery plants. However, fish should not be introduced before at least a month.

Pond liners

UBBINK® offers the widest selection of pond liners on the market. Pond liners are made of two types of material:

✓ PVC (thermoplastic type, flexible polyvinyl chloride): AquaLiner®

These two flexible and waterproof geomembranes are available in several thicknesses and in the form of rolls cut to the linear metre or in pre-cut folded bags of different lengths and widths. The steps for installing a pond liner

1. The shape

After deciding on the location and shape of the pond, mark the outline. A garden hose and some stakes of wood will be useful. You can also mark the marsh and shallow areas in this way. During this phase, corrections can still be made without any problem.

2. Digging

Dig down vertically to mark the final outline. Remove the layers of soil gradually. The marsh and shallow areas will be covered later with a layer of about 10 cm of UBBINK® gravel or substrate, which is important to remember when clearing. Keep in mind that the edges of the pool must be level (check, for example, with a batten or spirit level).

3. The substructure

The next step is to remove all sharp objects and roots from the ground. A layer of sand must then be laid to protect the liner. We also recommend UBBINK® pond geotextile felt, a particularly resistant and rot-resistant synthetic material.

4. Laying the liner

Unfold the pond liner and pull it over the hollow. Lay the pool liner all around, letting it extend by 30 to 50 cm. If you now fill the pool with water, the pool liner will slip and gradually settle in the right position. To prevent the pond from losing water unnecessarily, create what is called a capillary dam: the pool liner at the edge is not simply laid flat and covered with earth, which would allow water to escape easily, but rather hold it upright and cut it a little above the ground level. The top edge of the liner should always be higher than the highest water level.

5. Bank landscaping

For the development of the bank area, it is advisable to use UBBINK® culture beds, woven in nylon or coconut, as well as UBBINK® coconut irrigation bags, with pockets in which the plants are installed to hang in the pond. These plant beds and irrigation bags are fixed in the ground with hooks. After some time, once the plants have taken root, the edges of the liner will no longer be visible.

This non-woven synthetic fibre (PET) is a flexible material (fits all shapes of the pond), dense (guarantee of strength) and easy to install as a protective layer between the bottom of the pond with its sand base and the PVC or EDPM pond liner. The felt has four advantages:

The areas and products associated with pond landscaping

AREA A: Deep water area

This area is between 100 and 150 cm from the surface of the water. This is where to put baskets with aquatic plants (e.g. lotus, water lily, talia) and also equipment like the pumps for filters, streams and waterfalls. Its depth means that the water does not warm up too quickly during the summer and does not freeze during the winter so that fish can find shelter there.

AREA B: Lagooning area

This area is between 30 and 50 cm from the surface of the water. This is where to put baskets with aquatic plants and also equipment like the pumps for gargoyles, fountains and water jets. MultiBright Solar Float - LED

The eye-catcher for the garden, pool or pond – our solar globe lights in three sizes! They can be positioned in the most diverse way, on the pond and in the pool they float on the water surface but they can also be hung in trees or placed between the garden planting. The scope of delivery includes the ground fixing and a hook for hanging.

The plastic hollow globes illuminate in many colours, depending on the setting, gently merging into each other or permanently in one colour. An automatic twilight control switches the globes on when it gets dark and switches them off again in full daylight. A remote control is included. The solar module is built in to the inside of the globe and charges the battery when exposed to incoming sunlight. The charging time is about 8-10 hours, when fully charged, the globes operate for 4 to 6 hours.

AquaSpotlight Power LED

Waterproof LED floodlight (IP68, class III) equipped with a POWER LED bulb that diffuses a powerful beam for optimal effect in or around the pond. The projector is connected by two cables (1.5 m + 3.5 m) to the transformer. AquaSpotlight offers two possibilities for illuminating the pond:

✓ Either by fixing it on its adjustable base to be placed at the bottom of the pond.

MultiBright Float 3 LED

Set of three transparent and floating, completely waterproof, acrylic glass (PpiA) floats with a circumference of 20 cm.
