Major developments at Walthew House

Walthew House station upgrade A major upgrade of the radio facilities available at Walthew House is underway thanks to the generous legacy left by our late former President, Page | Harry Arnfield G3LX in his Will. 2

Since the turn of the year discussions have taken place in a few quarters regarding potential purchases culminating in an agreement by the Trustees of Harry’s trust fund to meet the cost of a new ICOM IC7610 transceiver plus two new Lenovo laptop computers. Earlier in April, our chair, Tony M0SAV ventured across the Pennines with Neil M6NAE to collect the new radio from Dave and Simon at Lamco, Barnsley. Some of you may have seen the photos and short video produced by Neil taken during their visit which were circulated at the time. Whilst it would be nice to say it was a case of “plug and play” some fettling of our HQ station was needed. So, Saturday 16th April saw Nigel M0VNL and Roy G6RSU begin the work necessary to install the new radio and one of the laptops into the station setup.

the air from Walthew House and not just during the regular Tuesday evening meetings. As you will see elsewhere in this edition an initiative has been launched to hold monthly Sunday sessions aimed at helping newcomers to the hobby on to the air. Whilst aimed at the newcomer, these sessions are not exclusively so as members may also wish to register their interest to “have a go”.

I am sure many clubs out there will be envious of the facilities we now have at our disposal which has only happened because of the already mentioned generosity of Harry. The decision has been taken to dedicate Harry’s callsign G3LX, now a club callsign, to the new station which we believe will be a fitting memorial. We therefore invite members to come along to Walthew House to view and use our new transceiver which with the new computer will bring our station capability very much up to date. As for the second laptop, this along with some new audio-visual gear will help us to continue to provide good quality presentations both at Walthew and via Webex. As with any investment, the committee will be monitoring the equipment’s use to ensure it is truly benefitting the society and members.

As I am sure you will all agree, this is a huge investment for the society, and it is hoped the new station will provide many opportunities to get on

Expect to see comment in future editions highlighting some of the features of the Icom and activities to which it has been associated.

Licence Training Stockport Radio Society is well known for its involvement with training for the amateur radio licence. Page | However, with the onset of the pandemic in 2020 3

where all social contact came to an end, we found ourselves having to shelve all face-to-face training.

“You will have fun whilst discovering more about amateur radio and what it has to offer. The scheme is run through accredited clubs and consists of 23 activities, based around five themes. Having a go Getting involved Taking part Making

During this time a few other clubs moved to provide “remote tuition” offered as a free service to those enrolling which sadly we have been unable to emulate. Looking to the future, online tuition is likely to continue putting us at a disadvantage due to the costs involved in hosting training courses at Walthew House. With more and more clubs now offering free remote tuition it has become obvious we cannot compete; reluctantly, therefore the decision has been taken to curtail tuition for the foreseeable future. However, that’s not the end of the story as the RSGB has set up a scheme called “Beyond Exams”. The scheme is aimed primarily at newcomers to the hobby who have missed out on the practical tuition normally part of the training courses, but which was removed as a result of the pandemic.

Promoting amateur radio As you go through the scheme and complete activities successfully, you will receive Certificates to reward your progress.” For more information copy and paste the link below into your browser. https://rsgb.org/main/beyond-exams-buildingexperience/club-scheme/

An invitation to new M7 Licence holders Passing the Foundation Exam is your first step to discovering a great diverse hobby. The following is primarily aimed at new M7 licensees, but if you are licensed and would like to explore other aspects to the hobby or are thinking of obtaining your Amateur Radio Licence then these open days are for you.

Any club wishing to be involved needs to apply to become an “accredited centre” before it can offer the Beyond Exams experience. Recognising the opportunity to continue to be involved in the training of tomorrow’s radio amateurs, Stockport Radio Society applied and is now an RSGB Beyond Exams accredited club.

If you would like to visit us at Walthew House on the following Sundays, members will be on hand to take you through the basics of amateur radio including setting up your station in a safe manner, how to tune an antenna for low SWR plus hands on operating in many of the popular modes such as digital operation, internet radio and more.

It is envisaged we will promote this by hosting open days at Walthew House, initially once a month on a Sunday, from 10am until 2pm when any newly licensed amateur or anyone thinking of taking the RSGB courses can come and see firsthand what it entails.

(Just a voluntary donation would be greatly appreciated) Interested? So, come along and see what your new hobby has to offer, experience on air nets, DX communication and much more. Please email info@g8srs.co.uk to log your interest, or telephone 07598 892795 where a message can be left.

Local RSGB changes A few days ago, we were pleased to receive an email from our member, Les M0LPB confirming Pauline M7PLB and his appointment as local RSGB representatives. The email reads as follows. There has been a lot of movement within RSGB, Region 3 over the past 12 months, and as part of the change you now have a new husband and wife team that are looking after Greater Manchester and Cheshire Areas. DR33 (Greater Manchester) - Pauline Brown M7PLB DR34 (Cheshire) - Les Brown - M0LPB We are both looking forward to the chance to meet you all over the next year and for us to work together to move forward our great hobby. Please come and say hello to us both at Blackpool at the RSGB stand or around the halls. 73 of now, talk soon and take care. Les - M0LPB

Pauline and Les are due to visit us on the 17th May when they will present an evening “What Can RSGB Region 3 Do for Us?”. It is intended the presentation will be available both in person at Walthew House and online via Webex.

Pete Singleton M0PTB Many of you will know Pete suffered an injury before Christmas 2021 and has been recovering in hospital ever since. During this period Tom M0DCG and Bernard G3SHF have been keeping in touch with Pete and monitoring his recovery. Following a conversation in March, Bernard updates us with Pete’s recovery. Pete suffered a spinal injury after a fall at home last November and has been in hospital ever since with limited mobility. I give him a call every-so-often and I’ve summarised below our latest chat. “Erk! My earphone has fallen out again.” Where are you and how are you doing? “I’m now in the NW Spinal Injury Unit near Southport and expecting to move again shortly to an Outreach Unit again near Southport. This should give more flexible arrangements for visitors and Pete will let us know the details via Tom or myself.”

Les Brown, M0LPB District Representative 34 Radio Society of Great Britain 01234 832 700

“I’m now getting there, and everything is now working.”

“My right arm is good while my left arm and side are weaker”. While at Salford Royal, Pete was able to stand for a short period with assistance and now at Page | Southport being helped into a wheelchair and 5 leaving his bed was a big steppingstone for him. His next challenges are to get out of bed on his own, stand up on his own and taking a few steps for himself. His overall aim is to be out of rehab in 3 to 6 months and then look to relocate in Manchester or Stockport. Pete built his first crystal set aged 9 years in the mid 1950’s. In the 60’s he passed his TV Mechanics exam and later moved to Surbiton where he worked on computers. Amateur Radio started in the 70’s when he passed his RAE Parts A & B. However, he didn’t fancy a ‘B’ licence or operating on VHF and started a long history of failing his CW Test at 12 wpm. Pete has recently been able to read through 2 copies on Radcom with some difficulty as his fingers still lack dexterity making Emails a major challenge though shorter Text messages are a little easier. By far the easiest way to communicate with Pete is by phone 07500 583691. Calls in the afternoon seem best avoiding clashes with hospital activities and of course, his earphone dropping out! Bernard G3SHF (20th March 2022) A few weeks on and Bernard can further update us with Pete’s recovery.

I spoke to Pete a little earlier today. He is still in Southport but now quite frustrated as he is confined to bed with skin problems. Since our last conversation, he has been moved again to the…. Special Unit Active Group 6 Weld Road

Southport PR8 2AZ This assisted living facility is in an old Victorian House, which he calls a mansion, not far from the seafront. He has access to a wheelchair and negotiates round the house via the narrow hallways and a lift taking him down to the ground floor from his first-floor room. He can explore the garden, though parts are accessed via a steep slope where assistance is needed. He could get out of the house and into the local village, but the paving is in a poor state, and he has had to rely on his son's visits to help him to a couple of pints at the local pub. His recovery has progressed since our last phone call and while his mobility is not yet considered to be 'normal', he has greater dexterity in his fingers to the extent he can pick up pins and needles. Pete's view is he will remain in the Spinal Unit for a few weeks, and then they will be looking for 'supported living' in the community, and he has in mind somewhere in the Stockport area. Whilst Pete understands he is a long way from Stockport, he would welcome visitors or phone calls. The visiting arrangements are quite informal, but the Spinal Unit would appreciate a phone call from visitors and evidence of a successful Covid test. If necessary, they could conduct a test while you wait. The Unit's phone number is 01704 563633 while Pete's number is 07500 583691. Bernard G3SHF (11th April 2022)

Since Bernard’s latest conversation with Pete, efforts are being made to provide him with a Tablet loaded with several Radio Apps including Zello. This will allow Pete to join in the regular club nets held using that medium and reconnect him with the society. Our thanks to Neil M6NAE for obtaining the Tablet from his source and arranging it’s delivery to Pete. If you’ve not joined the Zello net and would like to, please see more details later in this issue.

NARSA Rally, Blackpool This year’s Northern Amateur Radio Societies Association Blackpool Rally will take place on Sunday 24 April at the Norbreck Castle Exhibition Page | Centre, Blackpool, FY2 9AA. https://narsa.org.uk/ 6

Once again, we will be taking a team to exhibit our activities to the many visitors from around the region and beyond. The team, led by Tony M0SAV (our Chair) gathered at Walthew House today, Saturday 16th April to complete the preparations to our stand which will feature many aspects of our history and activities. If you are planning to visit the rally, please remember to stop by and say “hello” and maybe spend a few minutes helping out.

The first NASA On the Air (NOTA) special event of the year will be held on Saturday, April 23, through Wednesday, April 27, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 16 mission to the moon. Different NASA radio clubs will go on the air at different times to make two-way contacts with fellow space enthusiastic ham radio operators. For the list of suggested frequencies, modes, points scoring, rules, certificates, procedures and news, visit NasaOnTheAir.wordpress.com daily. Be sure to watch for posts on Twitter.com/NASARadioClubs (a Twitter account is NOT required to view) for late breaking news updates -- and don't forget your favourite spotting network -- for NOTA activity live and in real time. For QSL card information, please check the QRZ.com page for each individual NASA club callsign. [ANS thanks Pat Kilroy, N8PK, NASA Engineer and AMSAT Ambassador for the above information]

NASA On the Air (NOTA) Special Event Stations There is an Amateur Radio club established at many NASA field centres across the USA. Their members gather together to highlight NASA milestones the way such events are done best. That is, through radio. These club members are made up of civil servants, contractor personnel, retirees and recognized community members. Some clubs are large and well supported, some are small and struggle. But they have a common goal to show their support to NASA and space fans everywhere by highlighting the history of some amazing accomplishments.

The Cornish Amateur Radio Club GX5CRC run the annual International Marconi Day Award scheme held annually to celebrate the birth of Marconi on April 25th, 1874. The award is only on the HF bands on all modes. There are two categories of award. Transmitting Amateurs must work 15 IMD stations and Shortwave Listeners must hear 15 IMD stations. Only registered special event stations count towards the award. Full details on GX4CRC.com http://gx4crc.com/imd-stations/

Contest Group News The last weekend of March saw the contest team return to action, the first time since Storm Arwen dealt a fatal blow to the CQ WW CW entry last Page | November. 7

This time it was to be for the SSB leg of this year's CQ WPX contests. Preparations had begun some time ago, however work on the site had begun 10 days before the event when the Buxton and Worcester masts were moved into their positions. Discussions continue within the group as to exactly where is North in relation to the Common Barn Farm, field. Manager for this event was Tom M0DCG ably assisted by the antenna-meister, Dave G0LZL and with a plan in hand, the station build began in earnest on Monday the 21st of March. Throughout the week the weather was untypically good with some warm sunshine and light winds making the task at hand relatively easy and whilst there were some hiccups along the way, the station was ready for action with time to spare.

Pawel M0DSL and Tom M0DCG during the Saturday night shift.

Operators reported favourable band conditions and when the final bell tolled late into the night on the Sunday/Monday 2,276 QSO's had entered the log amassing a credible 4.8M points. Time will tell as to how this score fairs when compared to other teams, however from the group's perspective, it was good to get back on the air with a full-sized competitive station again.

The following Monday saw the team gather again, some a little bleary eyed to dismantle the station. Over copious mugs of tea and coffee plus the odd jammy dodger, stories of the weekend's exploits were shared and mulled over all with the overriding thought of it's good to be back competing again. All packed up, they vacated the site as they found it apart from the two masts, collapsed but still in position and ready for the next event at the end of May. We would like to thank the operators, in no order Pete M1PTR, Kieron M5KJM, Evan M0TJU, Carsten G0SYP, Pawel M0DSL (who made the journey north to see us again), Dave G0LZL and of course, Tom M0DCG who expertly managed the group. Also, our thanks to Bernard G3SHF, Roy G6RSU and Nigel G0RXA for their efforts helping to construct and then dismantle the station. The next outing for the team will be at the end of May when it's the turn of the CW leg of this year's WPX contests. If you'd like to get involved in any way or would like to see the team "in action" please either email contesting@g8srs.co.uk, or leave a message on our usual number. Whilst we cannot promise a jammy dodger, you will be made most welcome. CQ World-Wide DX Contest-SSB The results of the SSB leg of the 2021 CQ WW DX contest have been announced and we are pleased to announce G5O achieved 4th place in England, 69th in Europe and 116th Worldwide. Whilst this does not match with previous placings, we must remember the event was staged using

the facilities provided by Avro Heritage Museum rather than the usual Common Barn Farm which was unavailable. With a limited setup, this is a very credible score and congratulations to everyone who took part in whatever guise. Page | 8

H F Ladder A third of the way into this year's competition see's Peter down in Cornwall romping away with the title no doubt buoyed by his excellent location in the Southwest of England. However, to compensate we understand the weather did take its toll thanks to one of this year's named storms, but hopefully all is well now. Hot on his heels is Andrew with another excellent score closely followed by John M7CPT who is leading the way for our Foundation class licensees. Ian M0RNH/PA0RNH has split his entry being that he spends time in Holland as well as the UK, but nevertheless an excellent score with just 4 months under the belt.

As you can see from the various tables, activity is very clearly stacked in favour of the digital modes with the traditional modes of CW & SSB lagging behind by quite a way. Maybe with a few more contests in the bag CW & SSB will make a

comeback but just for now those marrying keyboard and rig are holding sway.

3rd: Practical & Radio Evening at Walthew House Time to dust off our radio gear and make some contacts from Walthew House. With VHF and HF Page | gear available here’s an opportunity to air the 10 club’s callsigns from our HQ and give those present, especially new licensees an opportunity to use our station. This evening is also an opportunity to sample the RSGB Activity contests at first hand. With suitable gear and antennas to hand why not come down and get involved with this popular evening event and may be submit an entry. VHF contesting is far more laid back than its HF counterpart and is an ideal introduction to the world of “radio sport”. Quite often there is a friendly rivalry between stations and usually a rapport established with other contesters. It can be very rewarding to exchange with other stations in distant parts of the country and often the continent using minimal gear. So, if this interests you, why not come along and give it a go. For more information about the events this evening and the RSGB V(U)HF contest calendar, please follow the links below. VHF/UHF Contest Calendar Two Metre FM Activity Contest Two Metre All Mode Activity Contest 8th: Sunday at Walthew House A new initiative open to all but primarily aimed at recent licenses. Here’s an opportunity to learn more about the hobby of amateur radio and receive guidance from member’s who will be on hand to help. Please see article elsewhere in this edition.

We have received an invitation to take part in this returning event organised by the Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club. For more information about this event and details of parking and public transport, please follow this link. 17th: Presentation at Walthew House/Webex: What Can RSGB Region 3 Do for Us?” with Les & Pauline Brown M0LPB and M7PLB. This evening we welcome our new RSGB Region 33 & 34 representatives to update us on present the “comings and goings” at our national society and region 3 of which we are a part. They’ll also be seeking members views on the future direction of the RSGB, both in this area and in general. 24th: Online social evening by Webex With our first “wild card” net on 80 Metres taking place next Tuesday (31st) our propagation aficionado, Evan M0TJU will be talking to us about what can be expected. We would welcome those with 80 Metres capability to share their thoughts with us this

evening. However, even if you are not able to meet with us on air, you can still join in the fun on the 31st by tuning in to the local WebSDR at Jodrell Bank maintained by G0XBU. Page | Further information and details of the Webex 11 access link can be obtained by emailing

info@g8srs.co.uk or calling 07598 892795. At all Walthew House events, Morse code instruction and practice led by Evan M0TJU takes place from around 7pm.

Presentations We are always on the lookout for speakers who can deliver radio related presentations to the society either in person or through the Webex system. If you are aware of anyone who may fit the bill or indeed if you would be happy to speak about a radio topic of interest to you and which may interest others, please contact Evan M0TJU at any meeting or by email to treasurer@g8srs.co.uk. Alternatively, a message can be left using our telephone number 07598 892795.

Club Nets On air net are an important feature of any radio society’s activities and we are no different. To cater for members with different interests our nets take place on various bands and modes. Presently arranged nets are as follows and there are a few changes this month. Thursday Weekly at 7.30pm local: 70 CMs via GB3MR Repeater **2nd Tuesday of month at 7.30pm local: Zello Net. ** 2nd Sunday of month at 10.30am local: 10 Metres SSB (28.575MHz +/- QRM). Teatime Morse at 4pm local (Wednesday & Saturday):80 Metres CW (3.564MHz +/-).

**5Th Tuesday of Month at 7.30 local: “Wild Card Net”. See website for details. ** Having monitored the number of members joining the nets, there are a few changes to the timetable. With effect from this month the second Tuesday of each month will see a net using the Zello facility which replaces the net on 2 Metres. Also, the month of May sees a 5th Tuesday (31st) which would normally see us active on 2 Metres. However, with patronage being light we have decided to hold a “Wild Card Net”. Why “Wild Card”? Well, rather than settling on one frequency or mode, where there is a 5th Tuesday in a month, we will vary the arrangement and perhaps offering something a little different. May will see an 80 Metres SSB net on 3692KHz +/QRM led by Evan M0TJU. Those of you who have been with us a while will recognise 3692 as the frequency used for many years at 10am on a Sunday morning for our HF net ably controlled by former Treasurer Bill Hayes G4RLD. The months of August and November also see a 5th Tuesday, so stay tuned for further details. Additionally, please be aware other nets may be arranged at short notice all of which will be advertised via our Website, Google Group and Social Media platforms. For more information and a Zello password please email info@g8srs.co.uk or telephone 07598 892795.

GB3MR Repeater The repeater is located to the south of Stockport on high ground close to Lyme Park, Disley, an area known locally as Bowstones. • Output Frequency: 433.350MHz Page | • Input Frequency: 434.950MHz 12 • Locator: IO83XH • CTCSS Code: 82.5Hz For more information about GB3MR, please visit https://www.ukfmgw.co.uk/tx/gb3mr/

Teatime Morse with Bernard & Tom As this edition of QUA goes to press the team will have just completed the 700th session since they began in March 2020. With the overall situation returning to some kind of normality the sessions have moved from being held daily to twice a week, on a Wednesday and Saturday. Since the change the uptake in terms of stations joining us at 4pm has been light with just Geoff GW0ISE and Evan M0TJU being regulars. However, the sessions will continue so we invite anyone wishing to improve the CW skills to contact us. Speeds will be adjusted to accommodate. Stockport Radio Society Publication Library Recent months has seen me actively assemble a library of publications which are of interest to the radio amateur. The continually expanding library in PDF format is available to members who can bring their own USB storage device to Walthew House and copy all, or the required publication(s). Whilst there is no charge, members using the facility may wish to make a donation to society funds. Alternatively, a 16GB USB storage device, kindly donated by ICOM UK can be provided with a £5 deposit. If the device is not returned, the deposit will be used to secure a replacement. My thanks go to, Icom UK, all those sources and organisations who have made publications available at no cost, notably Practical Wireless, and members donating books and publications from the likes of the ARRL, RSGB and Practical Wireless. As well as books, the library presently holds copies of many popular periodicals such as Radcom, Practical Wireless, BATC CQ-TV and Practical Electronics. For a full list of publications available, and/or if you have any publications in PDF format you would like to donate, please contact me. Neil M6NAE Stockport Radio Society Funding Manager / Social Media.

(Ed: Many years ago, the society held a substantial book library managed by the late Charlie Cheetham which over time fell into disuse. It’s good to see Neil make the effort to reform the library which I am sure will be a valuable asset. If you have any publications you feel would benefit the library, please let Neil know.)
