To Whom It May Concern,

It is my pleasure to recommend Grace Liang as a student designer.

I had the pleasure of working with Grace for 4 months full-time while working on design explorations for a 3-tower masterplan project.

During our time together, Grace proved to be really strong at producing presentation material to convey design intent and has demonstrated good knowledge of software use both in Revit and Rhino.

Grace also demonstrated the ability to self-manage her time and the ability to identify priorities in order to successfully meet deadlines. Her work was a huge asset for the team that led to successful presentations with the client.

I am confident without reservation that Grace would be an excellent fit for your team. As a team player and dedicated designer, she will be a productive addition to your organization.

Feel free to contact me at laurence.renard@perkinswill.com if you have any questions or would like me to further elaborate on Grace’s talents and achievements.

Sincerely,

PERSEPHONE’S GARDEN

As an extention of the landscape, specifically the Joel Weeks Park, Persephone’s Garden is a library + garden and kitchen which supports local sustainable food production and businesses. Highlighting its central courtyard, Persephone’s Garden is simply an urban building with an outdoor space within.

During warmer months, the library’s courtyard allows community gardening. While in the winter, plants can be transported indoors as the visibility of the sun peeks through the east. This method of gardening allows fresh produce to be brought straight to the community kitchen or to local markets which encourages environmentally friendly activities while supporting its own community altogether.

As timber and glass are the two main materials used, it allows total visibility and visual connections throughout the entire building. It also provides a view of the Don Valley River and the Joel Weeks Park. The library also features a cafe, various relaxation spaces, and shelves for cookbooks and plant storage.

GO GO GALÁPAGOS

Situated on the coast of Puerto Ayora, a vibrant and research-oriented town in the Galápagos Islands, Go Go Galápagos aims to uncover the mysteries of sea, earth, and sky - much like evolutionist Charles Darwin. Go Go Galápagos places emphasis on environmental building design, incorporating sustainable HVAC and water systems into its envelope and structure. The building uses island vernacular and modern construction techniques to best fit Puerto Ayora’s hot equatorial climate. Three researchers, a marine biologist, a botanist, and a meteorologist converge in the centre’s main building to sleep, eat, and connect, then dispere into their respective research huts to conduct experiments in their field of study.

RED SNAKE

Red Snake looks to emulate the linear eastern asian night market typology. The linear canopy is a l-shaped covering located in Shanghai Alley, a historical street in Chinatown, Vancouver B.C.

Red Snake emulates the skeleton of a snake. It is in reference to the famous chinese folklore story of the White Snake, a symbol of good harvest, health, and its ability to bring together families and communities. The canopy’s symbolic form engages the surrounding Chinatown community through its cultural reference to the community’s historical Chinese diaspora and its market program.

The structure is supported in tension by eight curved towers which evokes the maw of a snake. The canopy consists of a curved i-beam central spine with steel plate ribs reaching down from its centre. The whole carapace is covered in a steel mesh and polyester sheet providing shading and protection from the outdoor environment.

FRAGMENTED

Preserving various historical fragments of the existing Police Station in Kitchener, Ontario, Fragmented is a community centre that promotes the arts, sustainability, and creativity through its program and connections. This consists of solid volumes made out of the existing limestone or brick and transparent pavilions constructed out of glass and steel mullions. Fragmented consists of seven separate volumes which are stand alone or connected as it guides its users through it’s openings and pathways. Through the combination of outdoor and indoor spaces, positive and negative spaces, this composition represents equality within the overall site.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNGUS

Form Follows Fungus is a proposed high-rise which aims to address a number of Toronto’s housing needs, as well as explore ideas of ecology in the context of skyscraper design. The project employs a system of fungi-shaped planting terraces to filter the tower’s greywater and use it to humidify the “core” where mycelium, the precursor to fungi, can be cultivated quickly and harvested to support the building’s mechanical systems. Mycelium is used in both dried and living form as an insulation method.

The tower is located at the major downtown intersection of Bloor St. and Spadina Ave., and a walk away from the University of Toronto campus, making it an ideal location for students and adults entering the workforce. Form Follows Fungus’ program is divided into four components: retail and office spaces, student living, single and double-rooms, and resident amenities.
