CONNOR’S CORNER
Time can seem a scarce and, thus, a highly prized resource in a school as ambitious and productive as Germantown Academy. Thus the decision last year to take the time to listen to each segment of our community as to what they valued about GA and wanted retained, and the educational direction in which they hoped GA would move in the future, was not made lightly. Once committed, though, we forged ahead under the direction of Director of Institutional Advancement Audrey Schnur, Trustee Chair Judi Goodman, Assistant Head of School and Head of the Upper School Rich Schellhas, and consultant Stephanie Rogen of Greenwich Leadership Partners. Together, we crafted an extensive and thorough process that included constituencywide surveys, focus groups, and, my personal favorite, an “Alumni Harkness Table” discussion series which Audrey, Martin Dean from her office, and I kicked off this past year in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Spending time with the alumni takes me out of the GA bubble and never fails to remind that the school's reach is extensive and that our graduates are doing so much good in the world. How proud I am to serve as your Head of School.
Time spent in a thoughtfully planned and skillfully executed process always yields measurable, reliable results. This past June the Board of Trustees in their annual retreat reviewed and discussed the good news that, as a community of teachers, staff members, administrators, and parents, we are united in our belief that GA is: • Inspiring students and adults with the Mission Statement; • Serving students well from Early Childhood through College Counseling; • Growing stronger in ways measurable and in ways unseen but palpable; • Willing, collectively and individually, to explore and implement additional ways of delivering curriculum and inculcating skills that will prepare even better our graduates for connecting to and leading in the intertwined global communities that distinguish the 21st Century.
Rightly inspired and confidently informed, the Board of Trustees of both faculty and parents believe began the work of setting a the school mission statement expresses multi-layered, content rich, the philosophy of the school well. strategic vision for the school. Not wanting to waste time and risk losing the momentum gained from those meetings, in mid-July a number of Trustee volunteers spent two full days with Senior Administrators focusing on the strategic themes that emerged from the Board Retreat.

As a result of this effort, great progress has been made toward crafting a vision for GA that is not a checklist of “to do” projects but, instead, a set of hypotheses to be discussed and tested. The 2014-15 school year will be a time of continued listening, additional research, and the initiation of a series of pilot projects. Various groups are in place to analyze what we learn from our pilots and what we hear from the on-going conversations we will have with the community. The goal is to present by late spring, 2015, a Trustee-approved draft of the Strategic Vision for Germantown Academy. Having witnessed the palpable excitement with which the Trustees and the Senior Administration emerged from our meetings this summer, I could not be more confident that GA's strategic visioning will be informed and shaped by our cyclical process of listening, planning, collaborative interaction, and targeted testing.
99%
of parents agree that students are well prepared for entrance to college.
Germantown Academy is poised to begin its 255th year. Looking back over that time, the periods when the school has flourished and grown in stature and influence coincided with those moments in which Trustees and Senior Administration were engaged both in visioning and in monitoring closely the day-to-day. Under Judi Goodman, our Board is poised on the threshold of progressive movement again, fully committed to strategic thinking while keeping the school fiscally sound, and continuing to oversee my responsibilities as Head of School.

STRATEGIC PLANNING
HARKNESS TABLE SERIES
As a component of GA's strategic planning process, Head of School Jim Connor initiated the Harkness Table Discussion Series to engage small groups of alumni, from different decades and different regions around the country in conversations to gain feedback about their days at GA and the educational foundation provided, as well as, observations of the state education and the critical skills needed for today's workforce.
Rich Schellhas and Audrey Schnur are forward thinking and detail oriented thought leaders with their feet on the ground and their eyes on the horizon, and I am pleased to be working with them to guide this process. With the Board and Administration aligned and actively involved What are seen as the most in engaging students, important qualities/capabilities parents, and alumni at a higher and more susstudents need to succeed: tained level, this • Resilience/adaptability threshold will be • Communication crossed confidently and prudently. GA is • Critical thinking/problem solving well on its way to be• Work ethic coming an even more • Strong academic background influential leader in global education.
Allow me to close with a final reference to time, the time that many of you have given us this year by completing multiple surveys, sitting in focus groups, gathering around Harkness Tables, joining in Task Forces or focused committee work. I could not be more grateful. The gifts of your time and engagement make our school a place at which and in which we and our community of students, parents, faculty, and staff want to work, study, play and visit. Scarce it remains, but when set aside for a specific and important purpose, it also tends to wax, prove malleable, fluid, and become more available. Time continues to be GA's friend. We will work hard to make certain it continues to be yours as well. All best wishes,
Jim Connor 1760 Head of School
“With on-going shifts in both the educational and professional landscape, I, along with our school leadership team, wish to sharpen our focus on the school's strengths, as well as recognize what we may need to improve or change to prepare GA students for college and life,” states Connor.
The Series debuted in New York last spring then continued in Los Angeles and Palo Alto, California. More discussions are planned for the coming year. “What was most remarkable about the discussion was the commonality of experience that wove through 5 decades of GA alumni. The shared appreciation for a rigorous education, grounded in authentic relationships between students and faculty, was voiced with pride and gratitude,” commented Rhea Pinkus Turteltaub '78. If you would like to participate in an upcoming Harkness Table Discussion Series events, please contact Martin Dean, mdean@germantownacademy.org, 267-405-7458

STRATEGIC PLANNING
ENGAGING STUDENTS: THE HEART OF GA
written by Assistant Head of School and Head of Upper School Rich Schellhas
According to the etymological experts at the renowned Oxford English Dictionary, since as far back as the 17th century the English-speaking world has used the word 'engage' to mean 'to attract and hold fast' or 'to charm' and 'to fascinate.' In terms of embracing such a compelling definition of engagement, the field of education is, ironically, about 300 years behind. How we engage students, how we best inspire them, captivate them with learning, and draw them into a lifelong pursuit of discovering and understanding their world, has led to passionate debate and extensive research among educators around the world for just the past two decades. While there is no doubt that GA teachers have actually engaged our students for over 255 years, how and why we seek to engage has evolved dramatically since our founding. Good teachers have always drawn students into their subjects by motivating them to seek answers beneath the surface and to continue the quest for knowledge regardless of obstacles. Exceptional teachers start from that same noble perspective. What distinguishes them, however, is their ability to let go of the reins when students are ready to gallop in their own directions, to guide them instead of to tell them, and to demonstrate a genuine love of learning with and from their charges. This is 21st century engagement.
Teachers and students now have equal, instant access to facts and content. While faculty are no longer in sole possession of the keys necessary to unlock the world of knowledge, gifted ones are still indispensable in drawing our children toward that world. They show and share with them its never-ending mysteries, and provide them the requisite tools to navigate it so successfully that they may forge their own paths within it, uncover its deepest secrets, and employ these to make a difference in the lives of others. In a century that clearly prizes innovation, an entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, and invention, engaging students is undoubtedly urgent work. What our participation in the Stanford University Challenge Success program has revealed, however, is that engagement is urgent not just as a means to a future, successful end; in fact, it creates instant advantages in the lives of our students. The data at GA and across an impressive range of American schools reveal that engaged students are also healthier, happier human beings. The more engaged students are, the less they report cheating, the more they report being able to meet parental expectations, the less they report being sick, the less they report being stressed, and the more they report being supported by their teachers – all of this regardless of their grades.
GA is not on the engagement bandwagon; our teachers are leading the way. We are engagement trailblazers. By exploring new learning modalities in every division, by exploiting the resources at our disposal, and by encouraging our students to pursue their passions and to express their voices in what they want - or better yet need to - learn, we seek to create a generation of learners who will strive to do what they love because they love what they do. We have already laid impressive groundwork in the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools through design thinking activities, minimesters, project-based learning, our continued examination of the role of homework, prizing active teaching and learning over cumulative exams, expanding and enriching course offerings, maximizing new technology, committing to meeting students where they are academically, creating a wide array of compelling extracurricular activities, and so much more.
Our journey has truly just begun. The trail is already wide, but there are many exciting, far-reaching directions it can take. Each division will continue to research and closely examine the potential of new initiatives that fit the developmental stages of our students. Fostering a thriving community of engaged learners is how we will best fulfill our lofty mission, how we will best prepare our students to, in turn, engage the world around them, to 'charm,' and 'fascinate,' and, best of all, to lead happy, healthy lives where they are the true authors of their own, genuine, self-determined success.
When are students most engaged with learning: • Connect with the teacher • Collaborative work • Active participation • Autonomy/choice • Passionate/challenged
GA's INNOVATION AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS supports teaching that honors the traditions of the school's curriculum, while also providing access to new modes of learning relevant to the 21st century and an evolving economy, including design thinking, a creative problem solving process founded by David Kelly of the d.school: Institute of Design at Stanford. Design thinking develops 21st century skills through a five-step process: Empathize (interview for a need), Define (articulate the need), Ideate (generate many possible solutions to the problem), Prototype (build your ideas), and Test (have user interact with prototype).
“As educators we feel a responsibility to develop these skills in our students, in using the traditional curriculum and employing new learning opportunities that allow for cross fertilization of ideas between people, disciplines, departments, and constituents in the community,” said Gaby Russomagno 1760, Upper School Visual Arts Department Head and Director of Innovation and Special Programs.
What are ways that GA could be more innovative/relevant: • Project-based/hands-on learning • Real world problem solving • Use of technology • Increased flexibility in programming
STRATEGIC PLANNING
20 TIME
Middle School English and History Teacher David Baroody introduced the idea of “20 Time,” a framework used at innovative employers like Google, General Electric, Skype, Apple and other high-profile companies, to his seventh grade history students last year. The project goal was to increase student engagement, independence and responsibility, while also allowing the teacher to model explicit research and design skills and foster environment of entrepreneurship. Students were given 20 percent of their classroom time, or one day a week, to develop, research, design, test and refine a project on a topic of their own choosing. Students presented their finished products to the GA community on June 3, 2014.
CHALLENGE GA
Throughout the 2013-14 school year, the Upper School competed in a rigorous, year-long, design-thinking-based House competition called “CHALLENGE GA.” Students were introduced to design thinking practices in the fall and completed a handful of exercises before tackling the big question of “How can we turn our house into a home?” The competition culminated in a special assembly where each House pitched its top idea to a panel of judges. Those judges included Board of Trustees President Judi Goodman 1760, Head of School Jim Connor 1760, Director of Institutional Advancement Audrey Schnur, Director of Facilities Deb Schulman, Maintenance Supervisor Charlie Landgrebe, and architect Maarten Pesch of Wallace Roberts & Todd (WRT) in Philadelphia. While student speakers Morgan Rees '15, Bridget O'Hara '15 and Sophie Hearn '15 led Washington House to victory with the most points for their presentation, every Upper School student won when many of their ideas were implemented this summer.
DESIGN DAY
Lower School students rolled up their sleeves on April 24, 2014 and used their imaginations on “Design Day.” Students were given a brief lesson about design thinking before going through its various stages as they brainstormed, mapped out, collaborated, shared, and ultimately constructed projects in response to the challenge of “designing or creating your own recess time” or “designing or creating your own playground, equipment, game or actviity.”
What are ways that GA can help students develop a love of learning: • More personalized learning • Increased time for exploration • Real life experiences • Self-directed learning

CONFIDENT IN EXPRESSION & COLLABORATIVE IN ACTION: ART ACROSS THE ACADEMY
Students and teachers memorialized loved ones who passed by participating in the Memorial Garland installation in the Quad. This latest Art Across the Academy project featured hundreds of small fabric flags which displayed messages and drawings of memories, wishes, thoughts, hopes and dreams. The flags were draped between the Quad's four oak trees, creating a magical space where students and teachers paused for a few moments before and after classes.
“This collaboration was meant to remind us of the power of art, including its ability to provide a time, place and space for the art of remembering,” said Lower School Art Coordinator and Barnes Chair in the Fine and Performing Arts Jessica Grisafi, who co-founded the program with Upper School art teacher Sara Krupnick-Ritz.
GEOGRAPHY BEE CHAMPION
Eric Nawrocki '19 was only one of 100 students in the state to qualify for the Pennsylvania State Geography Bee. He scored in the top 100 of all school bee winners in the state to qualify for the Pennsylvania Bee. He is the first GA student to accomplish this feat in four years.
UPPER SCHOOL SCIENCE RESEARCHERS SHINE!
If GA's Independent Science Research Program was a varsity sports team, it would be hard to find a worthy opponent. Known throughout the region as dynamic and innovative, the program produces student researchers who are consistently pushing the envelope and catching the attention of not only regional judges, but also international judges. This year was no exception as students combined to win $451,500 in scholarships and prizes, and two students qualified for the Super Bowl of science fairs, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
Justin Wong '15 and Gavin Rees '17 (above) each qualified for the prestigious Intel Fair, held in May in Los Angeles. Both students finished in the top three of their respective grades (all category winners combined) at the Delaware Valley Science Fair in April where GA students earned a total of 18 special awards totaling $339,000 in prizes and scholarships. Wong was presented with a full five-year scholarship to Drexel University and a $60,000 scholarship to the University of the Sciences!
In his project, Coordinate Descent in Two Dimensions for Protein Loop Closure, Wong developed a computer algorithm that help predicts the three dimensional structure of proteins. He was mentored by recently retired Upper School science teacher and founder of the Independent Science Research Program, Dr. Susanne Johnston 1760.
For Rees' project, Modifying the One-Time Pad Cryptosystem for Practical Use, he used hash algorithms to generate pseudo-random bitstream for use in encrypting data.
This winter, 28 Upper School Science Research students (several pictured below) competed at the PA Junior Academy of Sciences (PJAS) regional competition. Of those 28 students, 19 earned first place awards
and qualified for the PJAS state competition. Kian Jamasbi '17 earned a perfect score! At the state competition, eight GA students earned first place awards, and two students—Vivian Zhong '15 and Patrick Ledwith '15—earned perfect scores at the 80th annual Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) State Competition. In total, the Class of 2015 won $112,000 worth of scholarships to Penn State University.
GA science researchers also participated in the Montgomery County Science Research Competition (MCSRC). Of the 30 students who participated, 20 earned first, second, or third place awards and qualified for the Delaware Valley Science Fair (DVSF) in April.

Recent graduate Alicia Lu '14 found her passion at GA - singing and performing. No, wait, make that equality for everyone. Thankfully GA was able to support her interests! When she got to Upper School, Lu was an active member of the Singing Patriots, Singing Patriots Select, Belfry Club, All Cultures Together (ACT) Club, and the Gay Lesbian and Straight Students (GLASS) Club. Lu was also a Writing Center Advisor and Freshman Seminar Senior Advisor.
“Overall, GA's system is flexible and allows you to take the classes you want to take and participate in the extracurricular activities that you want to be a part,” said Lu, who served as the president of the ACT Club and co-president of the GLASS club. “Teachers motivate and inspire you to chase passions, and the opportunities GA has—like creating your own club or doing an independent study class or studying obscure subjects in the library—allow you to pursue your interests. For Lu, she was really at home in the Arts Center auditorium singing and acting. This past winter, her leadership and experience were on display as she played a key role in the Belfry Club's production of Bat Boy:The Musical, which earned 16 Cappie nominations and ultimately won Best Musical at the Greater Philadelphia Cappie Gala in May. Fittingly, Lu gave the acceptance speech on behalf of the cast and crew.
“Performing in general has this inexplicable joy to it,” said Lu who calls the Belfry Club her family and notes that her trip to Europe with the Singing Patriots as a freshman was one of the best experiences she's ever had at GA. “Aside from the rush of adrenaline and thrill of being on stage, I think it's the idea that I'm putting myself out there doing what I love for other people to enjoy.”
Lu's success isn't limited to the stage either. In the fall, she was named a National Merit Semifinalist and an early inductee into GA's Cum Laude Society. She is quick to credit her teachers with their support along the way.
“I'm proud to say that every single one of my teachers at GA has helped me be the person I am today in some way,” said Lu. “My favorite part of GA hands down are the teachers because they all have a rare quality in that any one of them is capable of being your teacher, your mentor, and your friend.”
For Lu, the seeds that were sown at GA will continue to reap fruits well beyond her days at the Academy as she hopes to major or minor in music at the University of Pennsylvania.
“Music and art have been such huge parts of my life that I could never give up,” she said.
Thanks to the initiative and drive of Claudia Mezey '15, Sarah Williams '14 and Akosua Adubofour '17, along with their faculty advisor, US science teacher Liz Dann and the Office of Institutional Advancement, the newly-formed Club Med was launched. Their objective is to reach out to GA alumni and parents currently involved in, or on their way to, a career in medicine. At their inaugural event in April, six panelists representing a variety of medical professionals and career/education stages spoke to interested students. A special thanks to Kieran Cody P'13, P'15, P'17, P'19 (Orthopedic Surgeon), James Guarino P'17, P'19 (Cardiologist), Gerald O' Malley P'17, P'20 (Director of Toxicology; CV; Military Medical Service), Sara Beltz Schultz '02 (Infectious Disease Fellow), Ashley Miller '03 (Registered Nurse, Clinical Level II), and Kelly McNamara '07 (3rd Year Medical Student) for their participation.

FIRST GRADERS INTERVIEW NOTED ARTIST
This winter, GA first grade art students studied the work of artist Zaria Forman, a Brooklyn-based artist who creates large, realistic pastel drawings of natural landscapes. Forman exhibits nationally, and her work has been featured in the popular Netflix series House of Cards. First graders made their own Zaria Forman-inspired paintings of glaciers based on the artist's 2012 series Greenland: Chasing the Light. In awe of her realistic style, students collaborated and composed a video interview for Forman in which they asked her questions. Forman responded by saying, “Out of all the messages and emails I get daily, your students' video was one of the most heartwarming and inspiring!”
GA HONORS JIM AND MIDGE BEARD PRICE WITH INDUCTION IN DOVE BECKER SOCIETY
Germantown Academy honored long-time friends and supporters of Germantown Academy, James and Marjorie (Midge) Beard Price, with the Dove Becker Society award. Jim accepted the award on his and his late wife's behalf. Midge, who passed away in April, was committed to GA and perpetuating the Beard Family legacy. Midge's father, Donald S. Beard '22 served as president of the Board of Trustees when the decision was made to move the campus from Germantown to Fort Washington. Donald and his five brothers, as well as many other Beard Family descendants, attended GA over the decades. Prior to her passing, Midge offered additional support to GA to expand the school's ability to engage students in new and effective uses of technology. “The Beard Family
has made an indelible mark on the history of Germantown Academy through the generations. Midge and Jim, who have been very supportive of technological advances in education, together have championed our history, while helping to write our future.” Head of School Jim Connor 1760 commented. “I look forward to sharing more about the family's rich GA history and our vision to honor Midge's support of GA as the plan unfolds.” The Dove Becker Society members are initiated at the sole discretion of Germantown Academy's Head of School, after consultation with the President of the Board of Trustees, in recognition of their individual, group or organization's fostering of the tenets of our founding Headmasters, David James Dove (English Traditionalist) and Johannes Hilarius Becker (innovative German).

BELFRY THEATER CLUB TAKES HOME “BEST MUSICAL” AND MORE!
The 2014 Philadelphia Cappies Gala was a night that Belfry Club Director K. Richardson and her cast and crew will not soon forget. The Belfry Club, the nation's oldest, continuously-run high school dramatic club, won an impressive five Cappie awards for its March production of Bat Boy: The Musical, including Best Musical!
“I'm awed,” said Ms. Richardson. “This is our second once-in-alifetime night at the Cappies. It's always an amazing opportunity to share our work with the other schools. I really couldn't be prouder of the Belfry Club and GA's commitment to the arts.” The Belfry Club won the Cappie for Special Effects and/or Technology (Marcus Vargas '15, Shira Epstein '14, Austin Seiberlich '14, Nate Mann '14), Lead Actress in a Musical (Sophie Hearn '15), Lead Actor in a Musical (Nate Mann '15), Song (“Three Bedroom House;” Emma Hearn '14 & Erica Rothman '14), and Best Musical.
The Belfry Club received 16 nominations out of 21 eligible categories. Longtime stage crew member Chris Nunes '14, who lost his battle with leukemia last October, was a recipient, posthumously, of the 2014 Spirit Award.
Led by the incredibly talented Class of 2014, the players of the Belfry Club pulled out all the stops in their performances of Bat Boy, which included a fantastic steel set created by Technical Director/Arts Center Production Manager Bill Kingsbury's Advanced Technical Theatre class. Students welded and cut steel to construct the monstrous set.
The show also featured live music by the student and faculty house band; actors suspended in air; and the unbelievable transformation of Sophie Hearn '15 from GA student to a half bat, half boy creature. The Belfry Club was featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer for its collaboration with Broadway producer Dave Clemmons. The Belfry players also had the opportunity to learn from Broadway actor and voice coach Donnie Kehr.
Germantown Academy Annual Report of Philanthropic Giving 2013-2014
Dear GA Community,
On behalf of the Germantown Academy Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and students, I wish to thank you for your support during the 2013-14 giving year. By showing your for the school, you helped make every day at GA a great day for our students and faculty.
Our community generously donated $987,000 toward the Annual Fund, which combined with other gifts, offered more than $1.6 million in support of the GA operating budget. This is a terrific success, which only happened due to the names listed below!
As we move forward, we will continue to focus on surpassing our million dollar Annual Fund goal. Germantown Academy is committed to providing programs that meet our students' needs as they prepare for their future lives. GA is also committed to decreasing its dependency on tuition to provide the necessary funding (see Revenue chart below) to provide our faculty the tools they need to offer what we know as the GA experience.
Philanthropy, especially gifts to the Annual Fund, plays an important role in accomplishing this goal. We are a community, and as a community, we have and need to continue to come together to support Germantown Academy for what the school and faculty have provided and will always provide us and our families. GA has shaped us, and I hope that you will consider demonstrating your love for GA and playing a role in shaping the school's future with your gift again this year. Our students and our school benefit from your thoughtful generosity. Thank you for your commitment to advancing Germantown Academy!

SPORTS REPORT
The sports scene at GA really heated up this past winter and spring as three teams won Inter-Ac League titles and a number of student-athletes earned individual accolades.
NOT BACKING DOWN
The boys' basketball team won its second consecutive Inter-Ac Athletic League title and finished 19-8 overall (9-1). It was the 14th league title for the Patriots under the leadership of Coach Jim Fenerty 1760. Junior Timmy Guers '15 was named the MVP of the Inter-Ac League and The Times Herald's Athlete of the Year. He was a First-Team All-League selection along with Devon Goodman '16, while Sam Lindgren '16 earned Second Team All-League honors.
FOUR IN A ROW
The girls' swimming and diving team medaled in all but two events at the 114th Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships en route to its fourth-straight Easterns title. Shannon McKernan '15 was named the Female Athlete of the Meet following victories in the 100 (50.82) and 200 freestyle (1:49.46) events. The underclassman also helped GA's 200 freestyle relay (McKernan, Meagan Dollard '14, Madison Visco '15, Natalie Dowzicky '14) and 400 freestyle relay (McKernan, Hayli Randolph '14, Visco, Dollard) win gold by leading off strong in both events. Sierra Schmidt '17 also won gold for GA in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:46.29, and was later presented with the Fran Crippen (GA'02) Award, given to the boy and girl who win the 500 free. The boys' swimming and diving team finished 14th at Easterns. Andrew DeFriece '16 won the 500-meter freestyle race in a time of four minutes, 32.93 seconds and was the recipient of the Crippen Award.

The wrestling team won its 10th straight Inter-Ac League title by crushing Haverford School, 55-18, in the final dual meet of the season. The Patriots went on to finish third at the PAISAA Wrestling Championship where eleven Patriots placed in the top eight positions of their respective brackets, including Brady Riley '15 (138 pounds), Jared Gober '14 (145 pounds) and John Grossi '15 (170 pounds), who were all runners-up in their weight classes. Gober and Riley also medaled at the 79th National Prep School Championship at Lehigh University. Gober finished seventh in the 145-pound bracket while Riley finished sixth in the 138pound class.
WHAT A CAREER
Megan McCloskey '14 was GA's honoree at the annual Girls InterAc Athletic League Athletic Directors' Award Dinner in May. The award is given by the league in honor of past athletic directors. It is presented annually to a senior girl who has been a multisport varsity athlete and has exemplified the following characteristics: dedication to their team and school, outstanding representative of the Inter-Ac League, sportsmanship and leadership. Each InterAc school honors one senior girl.
McCloskey had an incredible indoor and outdoor track career at GA. She captured her fourth consecutive gold medal in the high jump at the PAISAA Track Championship in May. The Penn State Universitybound star also finished second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.
The All-Inter-Ac, All-State, and All-American student-athlete also won the high jump title at the Pennsylvania Indoor Championship. In March, McCloskey won the bronze medal at the New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships in the high jump with a season-best mark of 5-8.5. She then took fourth place against the best talent from around the world at the Penn Relays in April. On the national stage, McCloskey won the USATF Junior Olympic high jump title last summer.
COLLEGE BOUND STUDENT-ATHLETES:
Thirty-three senior student-athletes will be competing for their respective college team this fall. Sixteen will be representing NCAA Division I schools. For the complete list, go to www.germantownacademy.net/athletics.

SPORTS REPORT
Kate Horvat '14 was featured in the "Faces in the Crowd" section of the June 2, 2014 edition of Sports Illustrated after winning gold medals at the 87th Stotesbury Cup Regatta and the Philadelphia City Championships on the same weekend. Horvat won the Stotesbury Cup's coveted Ana Tamas Knecht Trophy for winning the girls' senior single. The Yale University-bound rower climbed back atop the winner's podium the following day by winning the City title in the girls' varsity single event. On May 8, Horvat, a McNeil Patriot Scholar, was awarded third runner-up at the Triangle Club of Montgomery County's 51st annual William F. Dannehower Banquet for her outstanding accomplishments in athletics, academics, and community service.
COACH HOFMANN HONORED
Virginia “Ginny” Hofmann 1760 was selected as the recipient of the 2014 Michael F. Mayock Distinguished Teacher-Coach Award – the first female recipient of the award. Founded in 1997, the Michael F. Mayock Award is given annually to a teacher-coach in the Inter-Academic Athletic League in recognition of the positive impact those individuals had on student-athletes. The award recipients shall possess, and impart to their student-athletes, the highest level of integrity, professionalism, and concern for the “total” education of the student-athlete.
Coach Hofmann has served GA's student-athletes in a number of different roles since 1977– on the field as the varsity field hockey and girls' lacrosse coach and off the field as the girls' athletics director, director of athletics and, currently, the associate director of athletics. She is entering her 36th season as head coach of the varsity field hockey team where she has led the Patriots to more than 340 wins and five Inter-Ac League championships and one Inter-Ac Tournament championship. After the conclusion of the 2014 spring season, Coach Hofmann announced her retirement from coaching the varsity girls' lacrosse team. Under her 37-year leadership, GA teams won seven Inter-Ac League championships and more than 360 wins. Coach Hofmann was inducted individually into the GA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
GA NAMES INTERIM COACHES IN BASEBALL AND ICE HOCKEY
With the departure of baseball and ice hockey coach Tyler Stampone '05, who left GA to pursue his law degree, Athletic Director Jim Fenerty 1760 has announced that assistant varsity baseball coach Joe O'Hara will serve as the Interim Varsity Baseball Coach, and John Fields, who served as an assistant ice hockey coach in the past, will return to serve as the Interim Varsity Ice Hockey Coach, both for the 2015 season.
PATRIOTS WIN THREE PAISAA TRACK TITLES
Three Patriots captured gold medals at the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association Track Championships, including Megan McCloskey '14 (see feature story). Sam Ritz '15 won the 1,600meter race with a time of 4:16.85 while Devon Goodman '16 clocked in at 15:39 to take home the gold in the 110 hurdles. The two-sport standout also won a silver medal in the 300-meter hurdles and a bronze medal in the high jump. KerryAnn Lawlor '14 finished third in the 1600-meter run and her time of 5:10.00 set a new school record, reclaiming the record that she lost to teammate Abbe Goldstein '17 at the Inter-Ac League Championship. Goldstein finished in fourth place. Paige Kupsky '16 earned a silver medal in the 3200 race.
WELCOME JEFF THOMPSON! After an extensive search to bring a new Director of Aquatics/Head Coach of Varsity Swimming & Diving to Germantown Academy, the search committee, with the support and assistance of Coach Emeritus Richard Shoulberg 1760, voted unanimously to appoint Jeff Thompson to lead the GA swimming programs.
“We are so pleased that Jeff has decided to take this position,” said Director of Athletics Jim Fenerty 1760. “His knowledge, dedication and passion for the sport of swimming, as well as his teaching experience, made him an excellent candidate. The student-athletes, both at Germantown Academy and within the GA Aquatic Club (GAAC), are excited about Jeff coming to the deck this year, and I know he will make an immediate impact on our programs.” Thompson has been a USA Swim Coach for the Terre Haute Torpedoes (IN) since 1997 (currently the head coach) and the head coach of the Terre Haute South Vigo High School swim team since 1999.With the Torpedoes, Thompson helped grow the club from 60 swimmers to 300 of all ages who swim at various levels of competitiveness, as well as developed a learn-to-swim program and a Masters' swim team. He has developed and mentored state champions, junior and senior national qualifiers, and sent swimmers to compete successfully, several, exceptionally, at Division I colleges and universities. He has also helped organize and facilitate swimming championship meets and sits on the Indiana Swimming Board of Directors.
Thompson is eager to join the GA community and begin the new school year. He is also teaching a section of 5th grade math.

MAKING CONNECTIONS AT DAY ON CAMPUS AND OLD GUARD The Class of 1964 kicked off their 50th reunion celebration by coming back to school for their “Day on Campus” on Friday, May 16. The gentlemen and their guests met with their Class of 2024 (2nd grade) pen pals, had their choice of attending a selection of Middle School classes and enjoyed learning about world history from Upper School teacher and Academy archivist Mark Rabuck '86. They wrapped up their time by spending lunch with members of the Academy Club during which both groups had the opportunity to learn from each other about life as a GA student in 1964 vs. 2014. The two groups had an energized exchange, and it became apparent that while some things have changed, many GA traditions are still the same! Following this full day was the class's induction into the Old Guard later that evening. Welcomed by Patriots hailing back to 1937, the
Class of 1964 was inducted by receiving both a certificate and commemorative watercolor of GA designed by the late Stan Lomas '33. Senior Alicia Lu '14 (read about Alicia in Campus Life) shared inspiring remarks, followed by Matt Dence, varsity football coach, Upper School physical education teacher and advisor, recounted the Patriots' winning season (6-4) and the victory over archrival Penn Charter, 42-35, in dramatic come-from-behind fashion. The win, in the 128th meeting of the two schools, was symbolic of the sense of resilience and commitment Dence has begun to instill in the overall program. “Our football team is challenged to do things the right way, to persist even when things are not going our way. We make ourselves accountable to each other as members of a team and as members of an even greater school community.”
Class of 1964 members (l to r) Alan Furman, Terry Lefco, Watson Bosler and Bill Caum
As always, the evening was brought to a close with the singing of the alma mater.
The Academy looks forward to continuing the Class of 1964's 50th Reunion Celebration during GA-PC Day & Reunion Weekend (November 6-8) and welcoming the Class of 1965 for their “Day on Campus” on May 15, 2015!

ALUMNI NOTES
Hello GA Alumni!
It is hard to believe that I am embarking on the second year as your Alumni Society Board president. To begin, what an incredible first year it has been.
“1-2-3” or “Forever 123” was the Class of 2014's chant. We admire your unity as a class, your spirit, your dedication to learning, and we wish you well as you move onward to each unique college experience. The entire community applauds your efforts. We stand ready to re-connect and support you as you continue your education and ultimately move into careers in a few short years. Don't hesitate to reach back — we'll be here. Congratulations!
At graduation, three new members were inducted into the class of 1760. They are Becky Pizzino, Tom Taft and Ron Tempest, who represent several decades of service. This is another reminder of GA tradition, community and contribution — it is to be cherished, not taken for granted.
It has been touching to observe our community in action this year. GA is truly integrated, starting in Lower School and continuing in the Middle and Upper Schools. This integration is intentional and is rooted in strong leadership and respect for one another. It supports all ages, all ideas and positive actions. Further, what is special is the knowledge that this caring doesn't end when a student graduates.
Our alumni remain strong and ever committed to engagement with very diverse affinity groups, GA Career Connections, and the tradition of GA-PC Weekend. In a fast-paced and increasingly disconnected world, it is incredible to see our alums continue to connect with each other, students, parents, and especially our faculty, many of whom give back to the school far beyond their time and years in the classroom.
I hold Germantown Academy in high regard as an institution of academic rigor and as a well-connected community that learns from and supports its members. GA is an active, engaged and respectful community that shapes lives. If you are a part of our community, you have contributed.
I am looking forward to next year which is sure to be filled with new and exciting activities. Join us as “…we raise our voices high, And fling defiance to our foes, thy spirit cannot die.” (J. Helffenstein Mason 1900, Alma Mater)
Respectfully,
Deborah Huntzinger Herting '73 Richard has been an ASMFC commissioner for 14 years and currently serves as chairman of the Winter Flounder Board. He is the New Hampshire governor's appointee to the commission and was first selected to fill that seat in 2000 by then-Gov. Jeanne Shaheen. ASMFC officials called him a “dedicated and staunch advocate for science-based management.” Holly Weise '68 writes that she invited Meredith Asplundh '88 to speak to her class about feature writing. The class thoroughly enjoyed Meredith's presentation and her personal stories about writing for magazines. Meredith's son, Xander, is a student in Holly's English class at Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart.

GA Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 1995 inductee Paul Hutter '70 published a book in early 2014 entitled, The Golden Age of Ivy League Basketball: From Bill Bradley to Penn's Final Four (1964-1979). As the title suggests, the book highlights the “rich history of Ivy
League basketball and its prominence in the Philadelphia area,” summarizes the Chestnut Hill Local. Hutter also maintains a Facebook page, Paul Hutter's Ivy League Basketball History, on the topic.
Helen Piszek Nelson '70, and her husband, Erik, will be honored this fall by the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association at their annual Green Ribbon Gala event. Each year, the WVWA honors area residents whose generosity and shared commitment to open space has made a critical difference in the lives of all of us in the Wissahickon Valley. Helen, daughter of the late Edward Piszek 1760, and Erik are being honored for their “vision to work closely with WVWA to preserve a portion of the family's 92 acre-estate, now known as the Piszek Preserve.”

Rebecca C. Garrett-Brown '82, RN, CNM received the ACNM Preceptor of the Year Award on May 16, 2014 at the American College of Nurses annual meeting in
Denver for her work in teaching student nurse midwives. In addition to her mom, classmate Annie Sommaripa Schultz '82 was on hand to congratulate Rebecca. Incredibly, Rebecca has delivered over 2,100 babies and has precepted 60 student nursemidwives in addition to countless medical students, interns and residents.
Cassandra Morabito '82 wrote that Vicki Karr Schneider '82 presented Idiot Theater at the Mermaid Playwright Theater on August 13.
GA inducted 10 members of the Class of 2014 into its chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, the national mathematics honor society, during a special luncheon in the McVeigh Community Room on Feb. 28. MIT Sloan School of Management Senior Lecturer Randolph Cohen '83 was the featured speaker at the luncheon.

Take one step into Chestnut Hill's Indigo Schuy (8432 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia) and you'll quickly realize that it isn't your average activewear store. Founded by Schuy Wood Nunn '88 and her husband, Steve, in January 2012, the Nunn's set out to sell high quality and locally made athletic apparel (Best of Philly 2012 for Women's Activewear & Best of Be Well Philly 2012 for Cute Workout Clothes), and be a place where an active lifestyle could make a difference. “The community has embraced Indigo Schuy since its opening. We know most of our customers by name, and develop friendships with them. I love listening to people and their
Montgomery County Commissioner Leslie Stern Richards '85 was elected in early July to chair the board of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. stories when they come into the store,” Schuy said.
For Schuy, it's all about community and keeping it local. Schuy has connected with and supported several fellow Patriots through her business. The store itself is designed by fellow alum and award-winning architect James Morrissey '94. In addition, Indigo Schuy features yoga pants by Meredith Asplundh '88, t-shirts by Chad Peacock '94 and embroidered products by Emily Eastlake Evans '88, among several other local sources. “I think Indigo Schuy is unique in that we are a true local business. We love to support local businesses/artisans,” explains Schuy.
But providing excellent athletic apparel is just one aspect of what Indigo Schuy does for Chestnut Hill and other local communities. “We have a collection bin in our store for gently used shoes/sneakers (adult and children's).The shoes are donated to Clothes-PIN (Clothes for People also lucky to meet her daughter, Liza. Current student Bobby Taggart '16 will be the recipient of the Outstanding Youths in Philanthropy award along with Kevin Stewart.
Last spring, Lori Andress '88 and Coach Emeritus Dick Shoulberg 1760 trained the employees of the Community Partnership School (CPS), including alumna Kezirah Vaughters '91, in CPR and AED as well as how to administer an EpiPen. ACADEMY CLUB INDUCTIONS
Currently in her first year as Co-President of the Academy Club, Lauren Gillispie McCusker '04, guided June's 90th induction of Academy Club members with style. “This year is particularly special as it marks 10 years since I was standing in your shoes – filled with excitement, joy, some nerves, but lots of GA pride.”
McCusker shared with the audience that the Class of 2014 inductees, elected by their classmates at the end of their junior year, participated in a variety of activities throughout their senior year “that help foster an important connection between GA and its alumni.” From planning the Senior Class Breakfast in the fall; attending an Alumni Society Board meeting; getting the class stone design finalized to conducting outreach around the GA Annual Fund, the Academy Club candidates showed their dedication to GA.
Academy Club member Chuck Riter '73, who attended this year's dinner, commented that induction speeches during his time at GA were given by just two faculty members, Ginny Day 1760 and Bill Schoff 1760. “I remember it always being a fun dinner with many alumni in attendance,” Riter remembers. Alumni Class Agents
Thank you to the 96 loyal Patriots who serve GA as class agents! During the 2013-14 school year, class agents promoted more than 20 local and regional events; served on many reunions committees; and continuously encouraged their classes to support the Annual Fund. CAREER CONNECTIONS
Since 2001, the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program has provided businesses an easy, impactful way to support local education by simply directing contributions to provide scholarship dollars to qualified educational organizations instead of sending their tax dollars to Harrisburg. The Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) was added two years ago, specifically funding students from the lowest performing school districts in the state (Philadelphia, by far, has the most qualifiers) with opportunity scholarships at better schools.
GA is a qualified scholarship organization for both programs, which have exploded with interest, distributing over $300million in total aid over the last 10 years. The EITC program has become so successful, in fact, that applicant businesses are frequently placed on a wait list for initial participation. “It is important for our community to know that GA currently enrolls many students who qualify for support from EITC and OSTC,” commented Martin Dean, Associate Director of Institutional Advancement, who traveled to Harrisburg this summer for a workshop detailing these programs. “We are grateful for GA related business owners who have been inspired to participate, and welcome more businesses to play a part in this transformational opportunity.”

GA's Career Connections series, now in its third year, featured a program focused on both entrepreneurship and “intra-preneurship” last May. Entitled “Entepreneurship – Taking Your Idea, Business or Career to the Next Level,” the event featured alumnus Patrick FitzGerald '93 as the keynote speaker, followed by three different break-out discussion groups focusing on the beginning and middle stages of an entrepreneurs path, as well as the entrepreneurial methods that corporate organizations employ to expand business. Attendees included many alumni from a wide cross-section of decades as well as current parents and parents of alumni. With a career full of entrepreneurial pursuits, FitzGerald brought a well-rounded perspective to the keynote speaker role. Currently the Managing Director for DreamIt Venture's Philadelphia Program, FitzGerald is also an entrepreneurship lecturer in the Wharton School of Business and entrepreneurial consultant to the CEO of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on a variety of commercialization initiatives. His presentation referenced this career arc to highlight the main themes running throughout an entrepreneurs' journey. “Pat was terrific and started the evening off with a bang. His enthusiasm is infectious, he is the very definition of an entrepreneur,” parent of alum Peg Connor reflected.
Breakout discussions featured expert panelists, most of whom are members of the GA community. Moderators FitzGerald (Launching a New Business), Sally Jo LaMont P'04, '07, '10,‘10 (TakingYour Business to the Next Level) and Sally Solis-Cohen ‘76, P'06 (Intra-preneurship: How Organizations Pursue Success Using Entrepreneurial Methods) helped the groups stay on topic and provide helpful insight. More information about the panelists, their role and business biography can be found at www.germantownacademy.net/careerconnections. The events of the Career Connections Series are conceived and organized with significant assistance from Germantown Academy's Parents of Alumni Association Council, Alumni Society Board and Women's Networking Group. Each of these groups represents many of GA's community members, all of whom enjoy being a part of our strong professional network. Mark your calendars now – the next Career Connections event takes place on Thursday, May 28, 2015 and will focus on learning and practicing the basics of networking in the age of social media.
