A Parents' Committee Event for Germantown Academy
Dear Friends,
Welcome to Art Alive - a new concept developed this year by the Germantown Academy Parents’ Committee in collaboration with the Visual and Performing Arts Departments. We wanted to try something a bit different and created this new fundraising/friend-raising event entitled, “Art Alive—Celebrating the Arts across Germantown Academy.”
On Saturday, May 10, imagine, if you will, an art opening or open-air market, where you can witness a variety of live art demonstrations (with a silent auction of the pieces made at the end of the evening). The live art demonstrations by our talented faculty, alums and friends will include oil painting, jewelry making, cookie art, sculpting, chocolate making and more! There will be live musical and theatrical performances by students, faculty and alums. There will be wine and beer tasting and pairings with cheese/light fare by alums from the worlds of wine, beer and cheese. Suffice to say, an all-school event with something for everyone to enjoy!
In addition to the event on May 10, we asked a variety of artists (both from within and outside the GA community) to donate artwork that is available for sale in this online catalog. The artists featured have graciously donated their artwork and we thank them for their support of the GA community! The catalog has information about each piece of art donated and the artist. We encourage you to support all these artists and contact them for more information and business.
Please take some time to sit down and peruse the catalog and see all the beautiful pieces available! And most importantly, please mark your calendars for May 5 and 6, from 8am-6pm, as this will be the only time you can purchase these pieces from the online catalog (first come, first purchase-- so get there early!). Once sold, such will be noted on the catalog page. All catalog pieces will be displayed at the Art Alive event on May 10 and taken home by the purchaser. If you are unable to attend the event, please know that we can easily arrange for the artwork to be delivered/shipped to you. In addition to all this fantastic artwork, the catalog also includes the opportunity to prepurchase a CD containing all-school musical performances including an Art Alive theme song produced by the US song-writing students and Charlie Masters, AND an Art Alive apron perfect for that special someone in your world of art, gardening, cooking, etc. At the event on May 10, there will also be an opportunity for guests to purchase special Art Alive projects made by 5th, 8th and 12th grade students. And finally, there will be a silent auction for the awesome opportunity to work alongside GA faculty through the “Art Alive Studio Day” on Saturday, September 27, 2014 a great opportunity to get a group of friends together for a champagne breakfast and art making!
While many other schools are cutting or eliminating art programs, GA continues to support and celebrate the arts. We hope you enjoy this online catalog, find some art for yourself or a loved one, and send in your rsvp to join us on Saturday, May 10 from 7-10pm for a relaxing and fun evening while celebrating the Arts at GA! We thank you for your time and consideration. With warm regards,
The Art Alive Working Committee Heather Durkin, Lori Griswold, Kris Henry, Samantha Jordan, Charlie Masters, Gabrielle Russomagno, Kathy Tanner and Carla Zighelboim

JACKIE LAWLOR '13
Currently I am a freshman in the BFA program for studio art at Pennsylvania State University. Interested primarily in painting and drawing, printmaking became very special to me over my senior year and the experimentation and surprise that accompanies printmaking.
I began to become interested in art seriously at the end of my sophomore year with the uniquely inspiring guidance of my teacher David Love. Teaching me to embrace the elements of my personality that typically presented me with a daily challengesuch as impatience and impulse, Mr. Love encouraged me to channel those and marry them with ambition to make substantial, and lively work. Thanks to his encouragement I stuck with it and found that art excited me more than anything else. The piece displayed began as a blind contour self portrait, which was subsequently etched onto a plexi-glass plate. However, after several editions,
this face became a haunting alter-ego with which I continued to experiment. I hope to continue to push myself in undergrad and create thought provoking work, and hopefully find my way to a graduate program.

professional experience, the common thread linking her art research and her teaching.
Exploration requires confrontations with unmapped territory and the ability to embrace change. This respect for learning from past experience combined with an ability to promote growth and positive opportunities for learning has always been at the heart of her work.
Travel is the main source of inspiration for her professional work. Initially her interest in the landscape genre led her to travel for inspiration in the Far North: the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, Newfoundland and Labrador. Her work leads her to continually explore new and varied landscapes In addition, Bonnie has led several programs of study abroad for
students in Italy, Spain, Ireland and most recently in Cuba.
Since moving to Athens, Greece in 2004 where she has roots, she coowns and runs with her sister the Greek branch of her family yacht charter business, Valef Yachts. Parallel to her company’s activities she produces yacht brochures, is involved in the production of commercials, photoshoots, and American reality TV shows hosted in Greece, as well as co-presents a Travel show on Greece. She enjoys travelling, photography, helping to organize local art festivals and supporting marine conservation efforts.

The artwork of Kathryn Mapes Turner has unfolded from the mountain valley of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Here she was born as the fourth generation to be raised on the Triangle X Ranch in Grand Teton National Park. Here her consciousness of the natural world began. She grew up riding the trails of the valley, learning wilderness lore and gaining an eye for landscape. The happy synergy of a receptive spirit and a place of magnificent beauty, set the course for her life.
Turner began studying art in her teens from noted local painters. She then left Wyoming to attend the University of Notre Dame, majoring in Studio Arts. She spent an influential semester in Rome, Italy and then studied at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. Turner now has a Master’s degree from the University of Virginia. Having been passionate about painting since childhood, Turner is now nationally recognized with top honors from the American Impressionist Society and the National Academy of Equine Art. Her work has been exhibited in the National Museum of Wildlife Art, the Charlie Russell Museum and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson

Turner believes that growing up in Grand Teton National Park, a place with such dramatic light and dramatic natural composition, gave her an intimate appreciation for art. “I believe the valley of Jackson Hole evokes expression,” says Turner. She now travels all over the world to paint. With watercolors and oil paints, Turner responds with visual contemplations of beauty in hopes of sharing this love of the sublime with others through her work.
