GERMANTOWN ACADEMY Facility Rental Guide
254 Years and Counting... Germantown Academy (GA) is a coed, non-sectarian, college-preparatory day school in the suburbs of Philadelphia, serving students from grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th. Originally founded in the “town” of Germantown, then located outside Philadelphia proper; as The Germantown Union School, our school was later known and chartered (1784) as The Public School of Germantown, and finally as Germantown Academy. The school is the oldest, nonsectarian continuously-operated day school in the country. The school began its move from Philadelphia to Fort Washington in Montgomery County in 1961 and changed from all-male to a coed school. GA held its first commencement in Fort Washington in 1966. GA is comprised of 126 acres, which includes access to the Wissahickon Creek on several parts of the campus. There are three interconnected Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, which house classrooms, a Lower School Library, Roberts Family Library and Technology Center, science labs, meeting/conference rooms, administration wing, a 520-seat Arts Center theater; a 320-seat Honickman Auditorium theater, art, media, and photo labs and art galleries throughout the indoor spaces. There is also an indoor pool; two gymnasiums; field house; 12 tennis courts, outdoor track, several artificial turf and natural grass fields; and indoor wrestling facilities. Currently, there are more than 1,100 students enrolled and GA employs more than 250 faculty and staff. While the school year runs from September through June, there is a robust Day Camp and Summer Programs in action during the summer months. Indoor and outdoor facilities are rented throughout the calendar year to both internal and external groups. GA-sponsored events are given priority when scheduling facilities. Contracts must be signed prior to any event. A security deposit is required for outdoor facilities, while indoor facility spaces must be paid in advance.

There is a sound system that is operated from the top of the Stadium where there is a 10-seat granite-topped work area with several electrical outlets and jacks for the microphone and music; all protected by an awning. The Stadium speakers are located on top of the scoreboard. There are several handicap parking spaces adjacent to the entrance to the Stadium in addition to more than 200 spaces spread between two parking lots for the outdoor athletics complex. Sisters’ Woods opened in the fall of 2010 when two new artificial turf fields were installed — Oberkircher Field and Jordan Field. The fields are identical in size at 180x300’ and each has their own scoreboard with clock and home and away scoring areas. There is a small spectator seating area next to Oberkircher Field (field closest to the walking path), while Jordan Field has a natural berm where spectators can view the contest from a short height above field level. The fields can be lined for lacrosse, soccer and/or field hockey. Goals for each of those sports are available as well. Portable restrooms are on-site for participant and spectator use. Access to the fields can be attained by parking in the Carey Stadium Lot and using the brick pathway to Sisters’ Woods, or by parking on the GA campus, crossing the Wissahickon Creek on foot to the brick pathway that leads to the fields. There is a donkey set up alongside Oberkircher Field where the scoring table and video setup can be placed. Germantown Academy has hosted many soccer and lacrosse tournaments for all ages on Sisters’ Woods.

Germantown Academy also offers a baseball field, softball field, three natural grass fields and 12 tennis courts in its outdoor athletic complex. All of these venues are accessible from the Carey Stadium parking lot, which can hold more than 200 cars, and use the Carey Stadium restroom facilities. Each of the 12 tennis courts is built to USTA competition standard and have netting surrounding each 6-court area. There is a practice wall on court one, while the center of the two facilities can hold a check-in/scorer’s tent. The baseball and softball fields have cement dugouts for home and visiting teams, a full backstop with netting on top, a yellow-topped outfield fence (baseball only - 320 to left, 300 to center, 310 to right), home and visiting bullpens alongside the field and a scoreboard in right field. There are small spectator seating areas on each side of the dugouts, but many spectators sit on the natural grass berm behind the backstop to watch the games. There are four natural grass fields on the top corner of GA’s property. One field has a scoreboard with clock and home and away scoring areas. There is no permanent spectator seating alongside the fields, but plenty of room for spectators to bring their own chairs and sit within viewing distance alongside the action. Fields, which vary in dimension between 180x300’ and 180x360’ can be lined for lacrosse, soccer and/or football.
