WE EXPLORE
The Wissahickon Creek runs through our campus and is a common thread that weaves through all academic divisions, especially through our summer camp. It is a source of beauty, a place for recreation, and a habitat that offers lessons from the effects of climate change to the creatures that live in it.
3/4
of a mile of the Wissahickon runs through GA’s campus.
<10
species of macroinvertebrates have been found by the AP Environmental Science Class when they measure the quality of the water. Students have seen some lower numbers which is attributable to a decline in water quality. The Wissahickon at GA is measuring average or good water quality.
16
sixth graders in Science Class, carrying four kick nets, go out to the creek and look for invertabrates that can be seen with the naked eye.
60 feet of heart-pounding ropes courses surround the Wissahickon and end with a zipline over the creek.
7 different species of fish including bluegills, catfish, bass, pumpkinseed, European graylings, carp, and trout have been spotted by the Lower School Science Classes.
of campers are in the creek during the summer. They fish, canoe, search for critters, and have mini boat races, and more!
per year, Lower School science students go to the Wissahickon and make observations that lead to a general health assessment of the creek. Students attempt to analyze the meaning of the measurements and what it suggests about the health of the Wissahickon Creek as a whole. It’s like going to the doctor for a check-up!

October 2022
Dear Friends,
Happy GA 263! With the slew of official welcomes and opening events now behind us, we are excited to launch into the heart of the school year. You will be proud to know that interest in attending the Academy remains at an all-time high, with an enrollment of 1,220 Patriots in grades PreK-12 and an admission yield rate that surpassed any year in recent history.
Our commitment to health and wellness is similarly at an apex. The first phase of the Field House refurbishment has now concluded, and it truly looks like a brand-new building inside. Thanks to the many members of our community who have already contributed to the Our Moment campaign. Construction of the 25,000 square-foot Health & Wellness Center commenced this summer. As of this writing, we have raised more than $16 million toward our ultimate campaign goal of $26 million ($9.08 million toward the building; $7.13 million toward our vital endowment), with an additional $1 million yet to be raised to ensure the new building meets every need for our students and community. On the programming side, Dr. Leigh Serra began her tenure as GA’s first PreK-12 Director of Health and Wellness this fall, and she will oversee the classroom curriculum aspect of these initiatives across our three divisions.
Even before the first student stepped foot on campus, our faculty began the year together steeped in two significant strands of professional development: the landscape for learning in a post-Covid environment and anti-bias pedagogies. Over the course of this year, we will build on these foundations to develop and expand programs that will engage students in experiential learning and broaden the faculty’s capacity to really know, challenge, and support every single student in preparation for college and a happy, successful future.
Finally, I am looking forward to the 136th GA-PC Day more than ever. Not only are we at home, but last time it was at GA we were only permitted limited fans on campus, so this duel feels like the first complete extravaganza we have hosted in ages. This year, come one, come all to cheer on our mighty Patriots, to take a peek at the ever-rising Health & Wellness Center, and to connect with friends and teachers. I would love to see/meet you, so please be in touch. GA is better and stronger with and because of you.
Gratefully,

WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE... THE FRAZIERS
Sandy (Middle School art) and Alex Frazier (Upper School English) 1760 retired to a bucolic farm in the hills of Harleysville where they spend their days tending to their alpacas and goats. While they do not miss grading papers and projects, the duo miss their colleagues and students, several of whom will be on hand when the 1974 wrestling team, coached by Alex, is inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame during the GA-PC Day and Alumni weekend.
What have you been doing during the past few years?
Sandy & Alex - For 10 years leading up to 2019, we were leaders of a 4H Alpacateers Club, where our kids taught the alpacas agility and showmanship. They competed statewide. Until the pandemic we were also vending at high-end craft shows and gave private art and felting (Sandy) and weaving lessons (Alex). We sold a lot of the products we made in our farm store. We were able to be outside during Covid offering “Walk an Alpaca.”
Favorite GA traditions:
Sandy – The Halloween Parade; Alex – GA-PC Day. It was a time of excitement and energy, especially because I was a lifer at Penn Charter. I always looked forward to going to the game to reconnect with alumni, former classmates, and friends.
Part of the school day you miss most: Sandy – Breakfast and Lunch! Jimmy (Stewart 1760) and his team always had something delicious; Alex – Coaching. Nearly every afternoon, I would get a chance to work with the kids in a different environment. It was interesting to see how they reacted on the field of play.
What did your favorite student teach you?
Alex – Humility and the benefits of hard work and dedication.
What does being a member of the Class of 1760 mean to you?
Alex - I am most proud of being selected for that prestigious group. I was totally surprised when my name was announced. It felt so gratifying to be recognized for all the work I had done for the school. When I think of all the other great inductees, I feel most humble.
If you didn’t teach, what would you have done?
Sandy – Definitely something with animals. I didn’t realize until I completed grad school (funded in large part by GA, thank you very much!) that I did have the brains to become a veterinarian. But by then I was loving my art career.
GA’S EQUITY AND INCLUSION LEADERSHIP TO WORK CLOSELY WITH AFFINITY GROUPS
Following the departure of Director of Equity & Inclusion Anika Walker-Johnson after four years, a new team has formed to oversee this important work. Veteran Lower School teacher and Diversity and Community Life Coordinator Sarah Na has been selected as our new full-time Associate Director of Equity & Inclusion. Sarah will continue to partner with the Lower School in helping to teach the IDEA (Identity, Diversity, Equity, Advocacy) curriculum, and work with all constituencies to ensure our Equity & Inclusion Action Plan becomes a reality. She will lead our team of Diversity and Community Life Coordinators, work closely with student, family, employee, and alumni/ae affinity groups, and plan important community events throughout the year.
Associate Director of Alumni Relations Melissa Fikioris will continue in her current role while also serving as our new part-time Assistant Director of Equity & Inclusion. Melissa will continue her outstanding work with our Black family and alumni/ae affinity groups while also taking a bigger role in working with Black students and other student, staff, and family affinity groups across the school.
Assistant Head of School Nidhi McVicar will provide strategic leadership in our Equity and Inclusion work, in particular in her oversight of the implementation of our action plan and her leadership in planning professional development related to E&I for faculty, administrators, staff, and trustees.
Integrating Equity and Inclusion work into every facet of our GA community will continue to spur innovative teaching practices and learning experiences for all our students. Says Na, “We look forward to partnering with all constituencies to ensure that every student at GA has a rich experience of the tapestry that makes up our community. Building a culture of belonging is key to students thriving and making an impact in our global world.”

Individuals and businesses who participate in GA’s EITC program receive a state income tax credit equal to 90% of their donation. This credit will reduce their state tax liability on a dollar-for-dollar basis and provide an educational opportunity for GA families today.
We are grateful to the following businesses and individuals who contributed to Germantown Academy through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs during the 2021-22 fiscal year. These contributions assist in providing students and their families with financial aid. In return, each business or individual received Pennsylvania tax credits.

Class of 2022 Graduates
Germantown Academy commemorated, celebrated, and welcomed the remarkable Class of 2022 into the school’s storied alumni body during a picture-perfect ceremony on Friday, June 10, 2022 on Connor Quad.
Head of School Rich Schellhas 1760 with Board of Trustees
President Dr. Lori R. Griswold 1760, students, parents, extended family members, and faculty and staff were inspired and entertained by student speakers Cory Miller ’22 and Caitlin Boland ’22. Upper School English Teacher Dan St. Jean delivered the faculty speech.
Senior Class Representatives to the Student Government Association—Fore Abinusawa ’22, Jake Hsu ’22, and Casey Traina ’22—presented the class stone and the Class of 2022’s gift to the Annual Fund (top left).
During the ceremony, Abinusawa and Traina—who served as the Student Government Association President during the 2021-22 school year—were awarded the Nahill Memorial Medal, which was established in 1964 by the Class of 1960 in memory of their Class President, George Gregory Nahill. This medal is awarded to the students of the senior class who, by vote of the class, have done
the most to further class unity. Blythe Berlinger ’22 and Kwabena Ampomah ’22 were each presented with the Head of School Prize, which is awarded to the two students of the graduating class who, while at Germantown Academy, have made the best use of their talents.
Lastly, Boland was awarded the Academy’s Wooden Spoon Award, which was reinstated in 2021. In the 19th century, GA seniors would gather for a “class dinner” at which they would regale each other with speeches, songs, and jokes. Prizes were awarded for academic excellence, and one lucky student received a large wooden spoon. The spoon was a special prize awarded to the senior who did the most to “nourish” other students through kindness and character. Also included in the ceremony was the induction of new members to the honorary alumni Class of 1760. Alumni Society Board
President Jennifer Rotzell Leming ’97 P’27 ‘30 announced that this year’s inductees are Upper School Mathematics Teacher Lisa Ledwith 1760, Director of Advancement and Strategic Initiatives Audrey Schnur 1760, and retired Kindergarten Teacher Peter Waxler 1760 (top right).

UNBELIEVABLE FIELD HOUSE RENOVATION!
Before
Under Construction Complete!
The GA Field House, originally built in 1987, received an interior facelift over the summer. All the stained wood was oil-primed, while the ceiling, walls, and steel structures were freshly painted. In addition, modern acoustic panels were installed, a Mondo Advance NG floor replaced the old rubber floor, and a new curtain was hung at mid-court with electric controls for the curtain and the new basketball backboards.
At 21,000 square feet, the air-conditioned Field House is currently GA’s largest indoor athletic and event space. Furthermore, a modern and accessible entrance was built to ultimately connect and integrate the Field House within the new Health and Wellness Center.

SCIENCE COMPETITIONS
The Class of 2026 Science Fair featured projects by 115 students; 50 of which were recognized with prizes for their hard work throughout the school year. The projects were diverse, and the students were able to show their creativity and ingenuity. Upper School Science Research students competed at the Montgomery County Science Research Competition, directed by Upper School Science Teacher Phil Rittenhouse 1760. In total, 28 GA students earned first, second, or third place awards, and qualified for the virtual Delaware Valley Science Fair, where 14 GA students earned awards, including 15 special awards.
Raina Bandekar ’23 won a second Place Silver Medal Award for the 11th Grade for her project. Since Bandekar finished second overall in her grade, she also qualified for the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) with an all-expenses paid trip to Atlanta!
MIDDLE SCHOOL FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS
In addition to teaching French in GA’s Middle School, Zora Meddahi-Larbi is a protector of an ancient Berber language. Today, she and others are working to preserve Taqbaylit, a Berber language spoken in Algeria. MeddahiLarbi joined Twizi-USA and now serves as President of the organization, where she has worked tirelessly with people around the world to create the first Taqbaylit/English and Taqbaylit/French learning language applications.
Middle School Spanish Teacher Lauren Fosnight’s session from the Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association’s 2021 conference was selected as the “Best of PA’’! Titled “Total Participation Techniques for the ComprehensionBased Classroom,” the session provided actionable strategies to help learners process the language intently, demonstrate their comprehension regularly, and interact confidently during input-driven instruction. Her presentation awarded Fosnight the opportunity to present at the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL) 2022.
AUTHOR VISITS
In April, the GA Writing Center hosted writer-inresidence Marie Cammarato who helped students dive deeply into playwriting. She brought her years of experience as a playwright and director into several Upper School classrooms. Students received guidance on creating a setting, developing characters, and building conflict. In addition to class time, drama students read aloud from Cammarato’s play “Hazel” in the Roberts Family Library.
Middle School Art Department
Head Romy Burkus had two cut paper pieces on display at Highfield Hall & Gardens in Falmouth, MA. Understory, a juried selection of cut paper artwork by Guild of American Papercutters (GAP) members, explores the hidden, underground, or underwater ecosystems of any kind.

LEARNING TO GIVE BACK
PreK invited the GA community to experience a play workshop bakery where customers got to see real bakers in action, buy treats, and enjoy a drink station. Skills such as math, literacy, public speaking, sewing, and creativity, all came to life through play!
The Team Jules Club, led by Kayla D’Eletto ’23, visited the Lower School and discussed how to be an “includer.” The club is based on a nonprofit organization that spreads positivity, awareness of disabilities, and opportunities to help the community, that was created in memory of Juliet Christina, a local teenager who bravely battled Mitochondrial disease.
Lower school students welcomed the Upper School Jewish Culture Club into the Tinker Lab for a special Seder. The groups talked about their favorite Passover traditions, enjoyed chocolate-dipped matzo, played games, and had an afikomen hunt!
BONDING WITH BUDDIES PATRIOT SCHOLARS NAMED
The first year of Lunch Buddies in the Middle School was a huge success! Eighth graders volunteered to spend weekly lunch periods with visiting students from A Step Up Academy, a private, not-for-profit school for children with autism spectrum disorder from preschool through 8th grade. Students ate lunch together and spent time chatting about favorite music and foods, engaging in conversational games, playing a round of Uno, and facing off in a touch-football game.
Aisosa Idahosa ’23, Joseph Richards ’23, Raina Bandekar ’23, and Sam Wang ’23 were each awarded a McNeil Patriot Scholarship during Prize Day. The McNeil Patriot Scholarship Award is awarded to two boys and two girls in the junior class who have built an uncompromised reputation in the following areas: leadership, personal character and conduct, scholarship, and full engagement in the extracurricular life of the school. The Patriot Scholars are awarded full tuition for senior year and will assume active leadership roles in the GA community. The four awards are named in honor of four legendary GA educators – Suzanne Baird Perot 1760, Virginia Belle Day 1760, E. Daniels Rankin 1760, and Peter Biggs 1760.
ATHLETICS BRINGS IT HOME
GA WOWS AT PENN RELAYS
Middle School Track teams put on a show at the 2022 Penn Relays. The boys and girls 4x100 relay teams competed in the Philadelphia Area Private/ Charter School Relays, with the boys taking first and the girls finishing second. The boys team consisted of Jet Dickerson ’26, Josh Cain ’26, Jack Durkin ’26, Evan Badami ’26 and Ethan Na ’26, running 46.88. The girls: Kaylin Trent ’27, Annabelle Steckel ’28, Arden Silver ’27, Piper Loney ’27, and Maggie Salerno ’26 took second in 53.16, missing first by just .02 seconds.
Upper School had 4x400 and 4x100 teams entered for the boys and girls. Aja McBride ’23, Sydney Cameron ’22, Alex
Goodridge ’22, and Fore Abinusawa ’22 ran the 4x100 in 50.77 placing second in their heat and 62nd overall out of 126 teams. Bri O’Hara ’22, Cameron, Goodridge, and Abinusawa ran 4:12.18, finishing sixth in the Philadelphia Academic division of the 4x400 relay. J-Jay Ordillas ’23, Aaron Parks ’23, Julian Wilson ’22, and Vance Thorpe ’23 ran the event in 44.99, finishing 23rd out of 117 teams and second in their heat. Ordillas, Blake Smith ’22, Luke Philip ’24, and Thorpe ran the High School Boys’ 4x400 Inter-Ac in 3:32.18, taking third behind Episcopal Academy and Haverford.
Alumni Owen Ritz ’17 (Georgetown graduate student), Ola Abinusawa ’19 (Penn), Issy Goldstein ’20 (Harvard) and SJ Cohen ’20 (Princeton) – all put up marks at the Penn Relays as well. Goldstein finished the College Women’s 3000m Steeplechase Championship in 10:28.65, finishing third in her heat and placing her 11th overall, missing the top-10 by just .32 seconds. Ritz ran the College Men’s 10,000m Championship in 29:12.68, taking fourth overall. Abinusawa threw 54’ 1.75” in the College Men’s Shot Put and finished 11th in the event. Cohen placed sixth in the College Women’s Pole Vault, clearing 12’ 4.75”.
BOYS TENNIS TAKES THE CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2022 boys tennis team put together a season record not seen since 1984. By topping Haverford School, 5-2, in the last match of the season, the Patriots, lead by Coach Guadalupe Prince, clinched a share of the InterAc Championship, finishing the 2022 season with an 11-1 overall record and an 8-1 league mark.
A 4-3 loss to the Fords in mid-April was the only bump in the road for GA, who responded by reeling off seven-straight wins. In the second and final match
against Haverford, the Patriots swept the singles matches, recording wins from Jason Wang ’22, Armon Meinstein ’24, and Aidan Swartz ’25. The pairings of Alex Katzer ’25 and Max Baer ’24, and Dylan Jeck ’22 and Kwabena Ampomah ’22 also tallied W’s for GA.
Just as team success came, so did individual awards. Baer, Meinstein, and Wang were all named First Team AllInter-Ac, while Katzer and Swartz were named to the Second Team.
SOFTBALL TEAM MAKES HISTORY
For the first time in school history, the GA softball team competed in the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament. The No. 3-seeded Patriots bested Mercersburg Academy in the opening round, 11-2, but fell to Shipley School in the semi-final, 1-0. Led by second-year Head Coach Sarah Zimmerman (MS Academic Dean), GA ended the season 11-8 (7-5 in Inter-Ac).
Forever Patriots
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING FACULTY ON THEIR
LISA LEDWITH 1760, 36 YEARS
“With an unparalleled level of Southern charm, the ability to teach the whole swath of the math curriculum, a love for coaching across divisions, a willingness to step up to take on some of the least glamorous tasks, and a sublimely easy-going nature, Lisa ‘Leddy’ Ledwith has truly made her mark at the Academy. We are all grateful for her many years of extremely hard work and service to GA on so many fronts. Exciting travels and time with her expanding family await Lisa and her tried-and-true Patriot husband Kevin, but we will forever remember their glamorous prom appearances and shared dedication to our school. Lisa’s unflappable work ethic, friendly candor, and clear love of working with teenagers in all their beguiling manifestations have distinguished her time on our campus, and I know she will be greatly missed.”
RUTH CARVER, 26 YEARS
“Ruth is a scrupulous lesson planner, a creative thinker, and a dynamo in the classroom. Considered among the greats of statistics teaching in our country and published in the field, Ruth has continued to innovate after so many years of success. Her Honors Statistics course, inspired by her core belief in service to others, applies the principals of her favorite subject to the problems of the world in true fulfillment of each tenet of our school’s mission. Not surprisingly, Ruth’s commitment to GA extends far beyond the classroom. Her dedication to Relay for Life and the fight against cancer has made the greatest impact on our students and, thanks to the tens of thousands of dollars she has helped raise, on the world. A highly attentive and caring advisor, and one of the faithful who generously volunteers wherever needed, we will miss the myriad ways Ruth has made GA a better school.”
CHARLOTTE DEAN, 25 YEARS
“I’ve had the privilege of seeing Charlotte teach in her Lead and Associate Teaching roles, and she brings the same spirit of warmth and kindness to both. Fundamentally, Charlotte is intrigued by what makes children tick, how their brains work, and how she as a teacher can best meet their needs – whatever it takes. Fervently committed to continuous professional development, Charlotte never relies on her experience alone; she continuously has added to her craft and teaching toolbox and has generously shared what she has learned with her grateful colleagues. Personally, Charlotte is a wonderfully grateful and gracious human being. She goes out of her way to catch others performing acts of goodness in our community and to share them with others – it is a truly lovely trait, and one that will remain with me for many years to come.”
LINDA TEST, 25 YEARS
“Every time I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Madame Test’s classes, I’ve been reminded why I fell in love with learning languages in the first place. Passionate, highly skilled, and all French, all the time,’ she immerses you in the language and culture with such enthusiasm and talent that students invariably wind up surprising even themselves by how much they learn. Linda has taught every level with grace, but she has always excelled in the honors and AP classes, where she diligently and marvelously prepared students to further their studies not just in college but also abroad in intensive university experiences. Administratively, Linda stepped up when we needed her most, collaborating with her favorite partnerin-crime, Carol Ayers, to co-lead the Upper School Modern Language Department and to continue its long tradition of outstanding teaching. Not to be overlooked is Linda’s wonderful care of students as an advisor and as supervisor of The Voyager, the annual Upper School Modern Language journal. While I will personally miss her greatly, I will live vicariously through her as she explores the world!”
JULIA BLUMENREICH 1760, 25 YEARS
“Julia Blumenreich’s excellence as a teacher is matched only by her excellence as a human being, mom, friend, and writer. What I would have given to have been fortunate enough to have had her as a teacher! Julia’s ability to create an extraordinary culture in each of her classes, year after year, stems from her gift of connection––her uncanny talent for understanding what makes each individual child tick and how to blend each of these unique students into one perfect montage. Julia teaches with and from her heart, every day. Julia inspires imagination and creativity, every day. Julia’s love for language, for the written and spoken word, has been passed down not just to decades of GA students but also to those of us lucky enough to work alongside her, to bask in her mesmerizing poetry, her brilliant talks, her perceptively perfect contributions in any setting. Julia is love and light, care and creativity, intelligence and insight, all wrapped up in one sublime sonnet.”
LISA MARTIN 1760, 34 YEARS
“There is a special, enviable energy that new teachers bring to the room – they fill the space with their excitement at the newness of sharing discoveries with their charges, relishing every illuminated light bulb. Without question, Lisa Martin truly and thoroughly still possesses that very same energy. With skills that span the entire PreK-12 teaching arc, Lisa blessed GA during her final teaching chapter by diving in deeply to the Lower School science curriculum, masterfully making it her own as she partnered perfectly with Craig Newberger and then Troy Holiday to ensure that our students developed the earliest possible spark for the sciences. A veritable nature guru, Lisa generously shares her passion for the environment with peers at GA and beyond to make sure we understand and protect our bountiful yet precious resources. Lisa emanates joy, intelligence, and a love of life. These qualities have infused her relationships with students and colleagues alike. My only wish is that, in parting, she bestow upon us just a smidge of that beautiful energy to sustain us during her well-earned retirement.”
And ANOTHER congratulations to our employees on awards given out in our end of year gathering!
Dan Sullivan (Lower School Physical Education Teacher), Matt Rominger (Associate Director of Admission, Enrollment and Financial Aid), Tanya Friedman (Child Care Center Director), Stephanie Dempsey (Director of After School Programs/SPARK), Christina Ro (Fourth Grade Teacher), Heather Galante (Middle School Latin Teacher), Sara Krupnick-Ritz (Upper School Art Teacher/Head of Truesdell House), and Elizabeth Cravero (Upper School Chemistry Teacher/Lab Assistant) each received Distinguished Achievement Awards.

von Zuben ’22 Habitat for Humanity, Wilmington, NC
MichaelI was excited for the opportunity to pay it forward as a senior leader on this trip after being a participant on the New Orleans trip a few years ago. It’s so great that GA offers its students a chance to go out in the real world and make a difference that legitimately impacts the lives of others. Using the morals and standards that GA sets for us in situations that are outside the “GA Bubble” is extremely rewarding.
The trip was challenging at first because the group didn’t know each other all that well and our days included
Saloni Bhatia ’24 Allagash Wilderness Waterway, Northern Maine
In June, I was in a group of 14 students that were selected to go on a camping trip to Maine where we would canoe on the Allagash. The trip was unexpected and exhilarating as I had never been on a camping trip before. When I got on the GA van, I was unaware of what I might see, or experience, but that was what made the overall trip exciting: you never knew what to expect.
grill a pretty awesome burger too (shoutout Andrew).
While helping others, I learned how to meet new people, improve my communication skills, and perform everyday tasks.
At the campsite, we set up tents, swam in the river, and cooked our own food over a fire. We were truly experiencing what camping was and how to live in the wilderness. One of my most memorable moments was the day we had bad, rainy weather and we had to make a plan on how to find a new, safe campsite. Even though we had to paddle extra miles, and go through a portage, it was still memorable because it gave us a chance to work together. I’ll also cherish playing fun games in the GA van on the ride there and home with Ryleigh Dougherty, Katie Martin, and Claire McMicheal, singing in the canoes and at the campsite, and listening to my friend, Livy Shafer, tell stories at night, as my other tentmate Sarah Sandifer, and I fell asleep.
This trip gave me a once in a lifetime experience because it provided me with new skills and friendships. I was so nervous going on the trip, but I returned with amazing memories.

Greetings from Your Alumni Board President!
As a lover of all things summer, the starting school year usually brings mixed emotions for me. Ordering new school uniforms and shopping for school supplies brings the anticipation of a fresh start in a new grade for my two boys. “Back to School” is more of a marker of the passage of time for me than the New Year itself, and September 1 can feel like an abrupt changing of the seasons as we shift from lazier days spent in the sunshine by the pool or at the beach into early morning, routines, and the ever-growing logistics of school and after- school activities. This year, more than ever before, I find myself ready to say goodbye to what felt like the hottest summer of my life, and hello to fall. I am ready for crisp autumn air, cozy sweaters, and football season - especially as my oldest suits up in a Patriots uniform!
The new year will be filled with milestones for me, both as an alumna and a mom. GA-PC Day will be held at home this year and my class will celebrate its 25th reunion. I don’t even know how that is possible! My children will also celebrate milestones this year: my youngest, Jude, will graduate Lower School and my oldest, Jack, will graduate Middle School. Watching my teenager grow and change over the past year I am realizing just how little time I have left with him and how
Guinan ’80, Eric Girardi ’80, Jerry McBride ’80, and Ward Humphreys ’80 got together to share some memories.
In July 2019, Karen Field Murray ’82 relocated to Cleveland, OH and assumed the roles of Chair, Pediatric Institute of Cleveland Clinic, Physicianin-Chief, Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital, and President, Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for Rehabilitation.

quickly that time goes. While GA did not have today’s current mission statement back in 1997, what I learned back then and what my boys are experiencing now is essentially the same. I see them becoming Independent in Thought, Confident in Expression, Compassionate in Spirit, Collaborative in Action, and Honorable in Deed, and know that their GA foundation will give them everything they need to do big things in each new phase of their lives.
As I begin the last year of my term as your Alumni Society Board President, I look forward to these milestones and more. I hope that you return to campus for GA-PC Day, and if you have not been back in a while, take a tour to see what’s new and what still feels like home. Reach out and learn the ways the GA network can help you or ask how you can connect to current students and alumni to help them. We are all so lucky to have our alma mater and this community. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are looking for ways to get involved.

2022 ACADEMY CLUB GETS INDUCTED
First-year Academy Club president Dr. Diana Rodgers ’03 welcomed the Class of 2022 Academy Club inductees, their families, and faculty speakers to the Honickman Auditorium for the annual induction ceremony in early June. In her remarks, Dr. Rodgers shared a personal story about the unexpected benefits of being a GA alumnus/a and concluded with perspective on what it means to be an Academy Club member. “What I hope I leave you with tonight is that serving as a member of the Academy Club is about far more than planning reunions and soliciting Annual Fund donations. It’s about being the person who makes the phone call, sends the email, or offers support to other alums, even if you haven’t spoken since graduation. It’s also about accepting that help when it’s offered to you.” Below is the list of Class of 2022 inductees and their faculty speaker.

JD WHITMAN SPREADS ECOLOGICAL AWARENESS OF OUR OCEANS THROUGH ART
As a professional artist, environmental educator, and interdisciplinary researcher, JD Whitman ’09 is working with climate and marine scientists to translate their critical research to the public through art. She is invested in providing environmental education to populations that are under served, underrepresented, and who are critically affected by the climate, plastic, and ecological crises. A lifelong scuba diver and ocean advocate, JD’s research practice is built on her desire to protect ocean life and support ocean health. She specializes in leveraging art, technology, and public engagement to enable effective, community-specific science communication on anthropogenic threats to the ocean.
“My goal in life is to bring the ocean to people, all people, because not everybody has the experience of living near it, scuba diving, or snorkeling,” she said. “Without that experience, people have trouble finding a connection to it. My work attempts to bring the ocean and the wonder of the ocean to people in different communities so that they can understand their connection to it and take action to protect it.”
JD’s appreciation for the environment stemmed from an early age with the help of her parents. “My parents are fantastic human beings and they raised my siblings and me to be environmentally conscious and stewards of the natural world - we were always outside learning about nature,” she stated. “GA went above and beyond in connecting us to the environment as well. If we were in the classroom at school, teachers had labs set up where they brought nature in to us. Looking back, I feel incredibly fortunate for my education there because nature-based experiential learning is incredibly important and something not many schools provide anymore”. At GA, JD was not only involved in the science fair and art program, but she was an accomplished athlete as well.
Since her time at GA, JD has studied at the University of Chicago, the University of Iowa, and the National University of Ireland, Galway. She went to the University of Chicago in order to study ancient languages and civilizations at the Oriental Institute in hopes of becoming an underwater archeologist. However, she stated that in 2010 she switched career paths abruptly. “Diving in Honduras, I witnessed a drastic decline in ocean health. It was
shockingly visible and I could not understand why more people were not talking about it or doing anything to correct it. Frustrated with the lack of interest and action, I almost immediately switched careers to art and environmental studies and have been navigating that switch ever since.”
She went on to graduate undergrad with a BA in Visual Arts with honors, and in 2013 did a post-baccalaureate year in Ireland. “I absolutely loved Ireland when I went, so since 2014 I’ve been spending half the year in Ireland then half the year in the US conducting interdisciplinary research and collaborations.” When Covid struck, JD took time off from school and joined the team at Plastic Tides, an environmental non-profit dedicated to inspiring and catalyzing action towards a plastic free future through adventure, education, and youth empowerment. She now serves as the Director of the Global Youth Mentor (GYM) Program, which provides students from all over the globe with access to environmental education, 1:1 mentorship, and the tools and support to create lasting, systemic change in their specific community.
JD has also developed a research project titled “Plasticity Project.” It is an ongoing series of community-specific, immersive, and interactive art installations. Each piece is designed to creatively engage viewers with research on the prevalence of plastic pollution, including its threat to marine biodiversity, potential solutions to the problem, and action steps for individuals and communities. “In each exhibition location, I collect discarded plastic from the surrounding area and use it to construct a site-specific, large-scale, enterable plastic inflatable. I then projection-map the walls of the inflatable with underwater documentation and scientific animations of ocean areas directly influenced by that community, transforming the interior into a captivating, immersive environment. Walking through the tunnel-like system, people learn about the ocean, plastic pollution, and their connection to both.” This project has not only introduced JD to a wide variety of people, but it has also positively impacted numerous communities in need of environmental change.
Currently, JD is completing a PhD track in order to investigate and provide new knowledge on how art, science, technology,
and public engagement can be merged to improve science communication and ecoliteracy rates, circumvent negative climate and ecological emotions, and influence policy. “Everything that I’ve been doing is really about communicating to people what I see happening to the ocean and encouraging them to take action.”
Countless accomplishments later, JD’s connection to GA has not faded. She feels the relationships she formed at GA are long-lasting and she has continued to keep in touch with various members of the GA community on a regular basis. “I’ve gotten the opportunity to collaborate with some of them now that I am out of school and in a professional setting.”
“I think about GA every day because it made me who I am and formulated how I think,” she stated. “GA taught me how to engage in critical discourse at all levels of discussion and encouraged me to think, collaborate, and investigate across disciplines. GA showed me that interdisciplinary action leads to innovation, which now, more than ever, is necessary for reversing the planetary health crisis. I am just incredibly grateful to my parents for sending me to GA, and to my teachers and coaches who were there and made me who I am.”

PROVIDING SUSTAINABILITY BY BECOMING LESS DEPENDENT ON TUITION
GA’s endowment is a carefully planned long-term investment. As its base grows in support of GA in many ways, it also provides for critical annual spending our school needs. Increasing our endowment will provide additional funds each year for faculty compensation and financial aid in perpetuity.
““GA has always had a unique sense of community. For more than 260 years, GA families have thoughtfully served as the Academy’s stewards. As we commit to making this treasured GA experience accessible and sustainable, we are ensuring the vibrancy of our students’ educational experience. The future holds great promise. We hope you will join us in growing the GA legacy.”

Faculty Compensation
The educators at Germantown Academy are essential to our culture of excellence. Faculty create the student experiences that define GA and shape the future of students’ lives. Endowment support places GA teachers, their work, and their passion for innovation as a top priority. Together, we must strengthen our commitment to faculty compensation so that highly qualified individuals continue to contribute their extraordinary teaching talents to benefit GA students.
As the independent school landscape grows more and more competitive, our
school faces significant challenges in a region offering families many educational options. To remain a preeminent independent school, GA faculty salaries need to remain competitive or exceed those of our peers.
GA’s faculty compensation should appropriately reflect the tremendous impact of our educators. Our financial commitment will allow our teachers to live within our neighborhoods, pursue their intellectual passions, bring new perspectives, and continually hone their craft of teaching.
Reaching our endowment goal would help us achieve 1/3 of funds needed to continue to remain competitive for faculty compensation.

“The people of GA have always stood together to fulfill the Germantown Academy mission. With our visionary gifts to the endowment, future generations will look back with gratitude on what we accomplished for our beloved school and its proud graduates.”

OUR MOMENT. OUR STRENGTH. OUR PROMISE.
85%
82% OF ANNUAL BUDGET FUNDED BY TUITION
Growing the endowment can reduce tuition increases assuring that GA remains financially accessible.
FINANCIAL AID HAS INCREASED AT GA IN THE LAST 10 YEARS
Financial Aid
Financial support allows the most talented students of all backgrounds to achieve excellence at GA. The need for financial aid among GA applicants has nearly doubled over the last decade. Increased endowed funding will help GA meet this need and minimize tuition increases.
Increased demand for financial aid is a trend impacting independent schools everywhere and presents a major budgetary pressure. To substantially relieve that
pressure, our goal is to roughly triple the portion of GA’s annual financial aid budget funded by the endowment. Currently, we cannot always meet the demonstrated financial need for every accepted student. Each year, 10 to 15 highly qualified students are not able to attend GA because we do not have sufficient aid. Our commitment to financial aid is essential—because when every promising student has the ability to join the GA community, everyone grows stronger.
“We were resolved to make a GA education available to more children and decided to establish an endowed scholarship. It is our hope that our daughters will continue our GA legacy, by becoming fully engaged community members and growing this endowment throughout their lives.”

A COMMUNITY HUB FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS ON CONNOR QUAD
It is not enough for students to do well at GA. We must ensure that they thrive. While many GA facilities have undergone incredible transformation, the need is great for a space that appropriately prioritizes the physical, social, and mental health of the GA community.
““The Health and Wellness Center will impact all of our children and teach them skills that extend well beyond their time at Germantown Academy. We wish we would have had the opportunity to learn, at such a young age, about the significance health and well-being play in our lives, and we applaud GA’s vision with this new facility. It is such a necessary space for our community to gather, and we are honored to be part of this project.”

WHY I TEACH...
BOB MOYER 1760 - Upper School History Teacher
Bob Moyer 1760 has been a friendly face (with or without the beard) at Germantown Academy since coming to Fort Washington for the 2004-05 school year. In addition to being an Upper School history teacher, Moyer served as a Department Head for 12 years, is a GA parent ’21 ’23, and is a grateful and proud member of the school’s honorary alumni society.
What do you enjoy most about teaching at GA?
Absolutely, it is the relationships with the students, colleagues, and families. It’s special. I love to teach; I love to make that connection and it’s clear that everyone who is on the other side values that too.
Does being a parent have an impact on your teaching?
I approach my job in advising and teaching students as if they are my own kids; with the understanding that it’s not the same. As a parent, I would love to have that feeling knowing that the teacher is looking after the kids and viewing them as their own.
What is your teaching philosophy?
It starts with the trust of a strong personal connection and using whatever is your field to work on the skills and understandings that hopefully provide some personal value to the student.
What occupies your time outside of GA?
I enjoy riding my bike and I love to travel and read. I’ve been fortunate to travel to China four times and Poland once, all through GA, and that’s been awesome. I’ve also traveled to Europe with my family. As a historian, it is important to have a global perspective and to be exposed to other cultures. It makes me a better teacher and it helps me understand our country and culture in a historical context.
What is your favorite lesson?
The Debate assemblies that I have led five times. Those have probably been my proudest moments of being a teacher. I set up the structure, but the students are the ones who embrace it, construct it, and present it. Working with the students leading up to it, I know how nervous they are and where they started. When I see it on stage, it’s an amazing expression of learning.
Christina Ro is in her eighth year teaching fourth grade at GA. While she takes her job molding young minds very seriously, she is intent about pushing fun into each lesson plan.
What do you enjoy most about teaching at GA?
The freedom to try different things and the freedom to fail (but not be defined by that failure). The resources here and things I’m allowed to dream are so energizing. I also love my colleagues that I get to work with, joke with, and share in woes with. Lastly, I love that even though my students move on to a different grade, I know their story isn’t over. I love getting to check in with them and their families as they grow up. It’s so cool to be at an all-school assembly and see previous students present. I can rest well knowing they are in good, trustworthy hands after their short stint with me, and I have assurance that they will continue to be cared for.
What is your teaching philosophy?
That’s a loaded question! I believe that all children are unique
and bring something to the table and that it’s part of my job to either help them discover that or to nurture what they’ve already uncovered. I believe in creating a safe space that gives them enough structure to learn but also enables them to have fun/ take risks while doing it. I try (operative word being “try”) not to lecture at them for too long because I want to make sure they are practicing whatever they’re being taught. I also want them to ask questions/be curious.
How do you engage with students and keep learning fun?
I try to make connections in big and small ways. I like to find out what they like and make references to it so they know they are being seen. I also love to play games/be silly. As serious as school can be, it’s also fourth grade, so I want to make sure it’s still enjoyable.
Is there a lesson or unit that you look forward to teaching?
I love teaching writing! Our realistic fiction unit is coming up and to see reluctant writers move from hesitant to eager is a true joy.
What occupies your time outside of GA?
I often serve in my church community which is a big part of my life. When I’m not focused on that, I LOVE going to the movies and trying new restaurants in the city with my husband (original, I know). But to be honest, since the pandemic, I’ve become more of a homebody, living vicariously through social media and YouTube!
CHRISTINA RO - Fourth Grade TeacherCLASS OF 1994 DEB CARLOS MIRARCHI CREDITS GA FOR BROADENING HER HORIZONS
Debbie Carlos Mirarchi ’94 knows she would not be where she is now, head of the commercial litigation team in the Comcast Cable law department, if not for her education. Although she did not decide on a career in law until her sophomore year of college, there are lessons from Mirarchi’s time at Germantown Academy that set her up for success.
Mirarchi came to Germantown Academy ahead of her sixth-grade year after attending parochial school and wasted little time getting involved. Whether it was showing new families around the Fort Washington campus as a tour guide, snapping pictures for yearbook and photography club, or competing on the tennis and lacrosse teams, Mirarchi loved the environment.
“It was very different and eye opening in a good way,” Mirarchi said. “Academically I found it more challenging too. I found GA to be much more open in terms of thinking, and I met a lot more people. It was wonderful in terms of being around new people and being more open to different cultures and to different ways of thinking.”
Mirarchi feels fortunate to have had many role models that helped guide her along. Germantown Academy Athletic Hall of Famers Virginia Hofman 1760 and Judy Krouse 1760 stood out, serving as her coach and a home room teacher, respectively. Gabby Russomagno 1760, Kendall Mattern 1760, Edwin Probert II 1760, and Patrick David 1760 also came to Mirarchi’s mind.
After leaving GA, Mirarchi stayed local, majoring in American History at Bryn Mawr College. However, her thirst for knowledge kept her in school after her four years of undergrad. She continued her education at Rutgers University
Law School, where she became the Lead Notes Editor of the Journal of Law and Religion. She won the 2000 Rutgers Law Hunter Moot Court Competition, as well as the Region III Best Brief Award at the National Moot Court Competition.
“I was talking to some professors, and they felt like law school would be something that I’d be interested in just because I like to research and write and advocate for a position, which seemed like a natural fit,” Mirarchi said. “Plus, I wasn’t ready to work full time, so law school seemed to be the most natural fit for me.”
Once she went to work full time, Mirarchi started as a Judicial Law Clerk before becoming a Senior Attorney for Sunoco in 2006, a position she held for two years before taking on the title of Assistant General Counsel and Head of Litigation. In March of 2017, she began her current job as Vice President and Senior Deputy Counsel of Commercial Litigation for Comcast Cable.
Mirarchi said that one of the reasons she chose commercial litigation is because of how much it encompasses. She oversees different subject matter areas of the law, like advertising, marketing, breach of contract disputes, pricing issues, real estate litigation, and bankruptcy litigation.
“Essentially it covers everything but IP patents, labor, and employment,” Mirarchi said.
Wanting to give back to her alma mater, not only is Miriarchi a loyal Annual Giving donor, she also spent time as the
President of the Germantown Academy Alumni Society Board. She said that she always had such fond memories of GA, so she wanted to think about ways to keep the alumni up to date and connect to the school. She now helps students get access to alumni and finds ways to help sponsor and participate in alumni events.
“I feel like I am where I am today because of my education,” Mirarchi said. “It’s the one thing that I believe I should always give back to, because that’s what sets you up in life.”

Patriots Society of Donors
Germantown Academy celebrates and honors those who have demonstrated leadership and commitment to our mission through their giving. Annual gifts that match or exceed $1759, the historic founding year of the Academy, allow our school to address the most pressing needs and opportunities that arise each year. The generosity of our community is critical to our ability to stem tuition increases and grants GA the consistency of resources to strategically address our priorities.
