THE PATRIOT/GERMANTOWN ACADEMY/3
Dear Patriots,
BUZZ FROM THE BELL TOWER
I love kicking off the school year with our annual Flag Raising ceremony on Connor Quad. Our students, faculty, and staff stand together to honor the history of our beloved school, yet remain at the ready to completely engage in today’s learning. As GA celebrates our 258th year, we are particularly cognizant of two extraordinary milestones in our school’s history. Fifty years ago, in the 1967-68 school year, Germantown Academy graduated both the first class to include female students and our first African-American student. Our annual ‘Old Guard’ dinner in the spring, celebrating alums who graduated from the Academy 50 or more years ago, will indeed be a special one this year. Throughout the year we will highlight some of the many achievements of women at GA across the decades, and in February we will welcome back our first African-American alumnus, Larry Gregory ’68, as the special guest at our Black History Month Dinner.
Even at a school as old as ours, GA continues to find new ways to tell our story. If you haven’t already, please check out our completely new website — www.germantownacademy.net. The opening drone footage will give you an awesome sense of our fantastic scenery. ‘126 Acres of Amazing’ is one of our new taglines that truly captures the spirit of 21st century GA.
With a new website and completely redesigned admission materials, GA stands ready to welcome millennials and their children to Connor Quad, and we always look forward to having alumni/ae children become Patriots! We hope that even alums living far from Fort Washington will spread the word that GA’s Lower School is, in a word, unmissable. Our Tinker Lab, Nature Nook, STEAM, and coding programs combine to offer every little Patriot an incredible education. Couple these with our cutting-edge literacy and math curricula and superb education in the arts, Mandarin, Spanish, and social/emotional development, and you will discover that your school remains far ahead of the curve.
In this edition of The Patriot you will read about the many accomplishments of our students and faculty. You will also find a list of the hundreds of committed community members who contributed to the school’s life line, our Annual Fund. Without these gifts to complement tuition every single year, GA would not be able to offer the breadth and depth of curriculum, special programs, and activities to today’s students. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for continuing to make GA a philanthropic priority. Investing in today’s GA students is truly an investment in the leaders of tomorrow.
Our Flag Raising ceremony also offered the opportunity to remind ourselves that as we strive to fulfill our mission at the Academy, GA’s Civility Pledge has become an especially meaningful beacon to light the way. This year we introduced a distilled version of this Pledge to its kid-friendly core: We are Kind. We are Respectful. We are Courteous. We are Inclusive. We Honor Difference. We are committed to embodying these traits and imbuing them in our students. Join us. Please visit, be in touch, and stay connected! GA is better with you.
Class of 2010 alums Molly Shapiro, Maria Mastronardo,Will Leonard, Colin Skelly, Dan Chauveau (and later Linnea Bast ’11) welcomed Rich Schellhas to the fabulous city of NewYork for a rooftop alumni gathering in October.
Board President Brad Korman ’83 (center) welcomed African-American families to our annual brunch in September.
Lower School Physical Education Department Coordinator Brooke Watson P’05 and Lower School Assistant Teacher Matt Mazurek are celebrating their 25th year of teaching at GA this year.
Best, Rich

We are grateful to the Pennsylvania businesses (like those shown below) that contributed to Germantown Academy through the EITC and OSTC programs during the 2016-17 fiscal year. These contributions assist in providing students and their families with financial aid. In return, each business received Pennsylvania tax credits.
• $25 million has been added to these programs, now distributing $175 million in PA Tax Credits and Scholarship support!
• GA qualifies as a recipient for both OSTC and EITC programs! • Some companies can transfer tax credits to their partners, shareholders or even apply them to their personal tax returns!

Anything is Possible Starting Here
ACADEMY SCHOLARS
The Academy Scholars program, led by Upper School math teacher Sue Negro and Middle School history teacher Mark Stephens 1760, is not a program in the sense of a course of learning defined by the school. Rather it is an opportunity for students with a passion for scholarship, creative writing, visual arts, performing arts, or research in the sciences, social sciences, or humanities to pursue that passion by means of developing and working on a significant, independent project. Last school year, four members of the Class of 2017 completed their ambitious projects, including Braden Cody, Dominque Pasquarella, Alex Smith, and Decker Wentz. For Cody’s project (top photo), he researched and wrote On Teams: A High School Handbook on Building Effective Teams. “It’s a ten-chapter book that describes how you can create the most effective team possible,” explained Cody. His research included interviews with a number of community leaders.
“I realized that even though you have different kinds of leaders they can all be very effective in different scenarios, but what they all have are teams behind them. My big breakthrough came when I got the thesis of this book during a ninemile-a-day hike with the Boy Scouts. This idea just came to me that the three components that make up every team are the people (population), goal (something they want to accomplish), and leadership (the people that organize and unify a team and make sure its running smoothly).”
Pasquarella (second photo) went in a different direction as she examined the progression of fashion trends throughout the 20th century before incorporating those trends into 10 modern day pieces, which were introduced to the GA community at a fashion show in the Arts Center. “Academy Scholars is an amazing program,” said Pasquarella, who had to learn how to sketch and sew to complete her custom outfits. “Mrs. Negro and Mr. Stephens are doing a great service. It’s an
independent project and you have to be self motivated, but it’s nice to have that structure and their mentorship. I think it’s absolutely one of the best programs GA has to offer. Having a passion project like this really helped define my high school career.”
CAMPUS LIFE
Smith (third photo), inspired by Holocaust survivor Kurt Herman’s life, wanted to continue his legacy after he passed away by developing his project,Witness to Genocide: Kurt Herman’s Story. Smith’s goal was to create awareness about genocide and the Austrian native’s incredible journey. Smith’s project resulted in a 20-minute film and a fictional novel.
“Kurt passed away when I was in tenth grade and I wanted to continue his story and message. I wasn’t sure how, but then I learned about the Academy Scholars program where you can turn something you’re passionate about into a piece of work, an actual project,” said Smith, who first met Herman in 2011 through the Witness to History program. “The book and video are to preserve his message that this isn’t just a Jewish story and not just the Holocaust, but that these events and these people could be anyone. That’s what the whole project is about—that education is the most important way to prevent these events. I already had the passion, but Academy Scholars was a vehicle to start to structure my actual work and have adults mentor me and to make it more official. The whole purpose doesn’t end with GA; GA is the lift-off.”
A Belfry mainstay during his time at GA and a regular of the Arts Center recording studio, Wentz wrote, recorded, and produced an album with eight original songs that explore different genres he researched (bottom photo on right).
“Academy Scholars was an amazing program that allowed me to really add an extra dimension to my high school experience,” said Wentz. “Creating the album was a great artistic opportunity, and it felt
like a major achievement to complete a project of something I felt so passionate about.”
Students become Academy Scholars candidates generally during their freshman or sophomore years by gaining the approval of the director(s) of the program. Besides having demonstrated pronounced intellectual and creative vitality, those permitted to join will also have exhibited the ability to do exceptional work in the relevant discipline with a high degree of independence and perseverance. MOST DISTINGUISHED
COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN
If you walk by the MakerSpace in the Beard Center for Innovation you’re bound to see one of the 3D printers in action as it meticulously prints and builds projects and prototypes, many of which are designed by students in the new
Middle School computer-aided design (CAD) elective.
“The Middle School program is a way to grow and support student interest in the MakerSpace and around computer design and drafting, and 3D printing,” said Program Advisor and Middle School Science Teacher and Educational Technology Coach Jim DiFranco. “Since the Beard Center for Innovation and the MakerSpace opened we’re always looking for ways to support, encourage, introduce, and transform ways teachers and students engage in the learning process.” After running a successful minimester course in the Upper School last year, DiFranco is excited to bring this elective to the Middle School students in hopes of building awareness and support for students who are excited by this type of expansive and fascinating work.
Each year, Distinguished Achievement Awards are presented to members of the faculty, staff, or administration who have demonstrated excellence in program development, teaching, service, or other areas of achievement. This year’s recipients are (left to right) Dick O’Hern (US Science), Brent Freedland (US History), Jeremy Correnti (All School Band), Marnie McDonald (3rd Grade), Sara Fridirici (1/2 Multiage Class), Tom McGlinchey (Communications and Marketing).
“The mission this year will be for me to learn more from the Middle School students, their ability levels, their interests, and go from there,” said DiFranco. “The basics will be to introduce them to the concept of computer-aided design, 3D printing, and laser cutting.”
DiFranco, who completed six courses in drafting, engineering, architecture, and CAD and received a CAD certificate while in high school, noted that the computer-aided design industry is exploding. “The list of fields that use CAD is tremendous, from engineering, architecture, product and inventing design, game design, animation, and many more,” said DiFranco. “Our course work exposes students to manipulating and creating in three-dimensional space and it aids in the prototyping and design process.”
UNDERWATER ACHIEVEMENT
Diane Goldstein’s honors engineering class was named the Overall Winner for their excellent design of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) at the Greater Philadelphia SeaPerch Challenge hosted by Temple University. The GA SeaPerch Team, which included Zander Foglia ’17, Frank Koons ’17, Finn Lillis ’18 (teatherman), Mike Peters ’17, Chris Purcell ’17, and Edward Wiernicki ’17 (pilot), as well as GA electrician Mike Kelly, created an ROV that was fully capable of efficiently completing various tasks and 10/THE PATRIOT/GERMANTOWN ACADEMY
obstacle courses underwater. A notable highlight was that of the more than 30 high schools in attendance, GA’s ROV was the only one to complete the new pipeline challenge within the allotted time. “We had to submit a three-megabyte digital notebook with all of the research behind the robot, calculations for buoyancy, the motors— everything we did in the process had to be documented daily and submitted,” said Wiernicki. “In fact, our score is based on more than the build and actual competition in the water, we also needed to present our project to a board of Naval engineers.”
The class also entered their creation in the National SeaPerch Challenge, held at Georgia Tech, where the Patriots placed 34th out of 99 high school teams.
TALKING LEADERSHIP FOR WOMEN
Realizing that Middle School girls need to come together and share their thoughts, Kate Cassidy, Director of Middle School Student Life, and English Teacher Sara Goodwin created the Eighth Grade Girls’ Lunches to discuss leadership and promote self-awareness and selfconfidence. In essence they felt it was important to encourage the girls to let their voices be heard.
“We believe that teaching leadership can help promote resiliency, perseverance, and the ability to problem-solve,” said Goodwin. “But, I was seeing it was tough for some of the girls to step up, so I started reading, researching, and thinking about leadership for women in general and why it’s a challenge,” added Cassidy.
They encouraged the girls to employ the “shine theory,” which promotes amplification and positive support for each other. “I was struck by an article that I read about President Obama’s cabinet,” said Cassidy, “One of the only women on the cabinet was being talked over. To support her, the other women on the cabinet engaged in amplification, meaning, if one woman said something then the others would repeat the idea and support it. ‘If you shine, we shine’ is the idea.”
During the lunch conversations, students shared what it is like to be a girl at GA, as well as navigating eighth grade dynamics. “Our initial conversations revolved around how girls look at each other as competition instead of being supportive forces. Sara and I shared the shine theory concept, and we emphasized that the more we support
CAMPUS LIFE each other the better off we all are,” Cassidy commented.
Cassidy and Goodwin started monthly lunches that are open to all eighth grade girls. Discussions range from women in corporate America, women in HelenWu ’21, demonstrating her leadership the entertainment industry, how gender skills by speaking at the Middle School final assembly plays into the sports world, to how gender plays a role in life at GA, to name a few.
“We feel that the overall focus on student leadership in the Middle School has really put kids at the center of our activities,” said Goodwin. “Whether they are discussing important topics at the Eighth Grade Girls’ Lunches, leading our Tuesday Morning Meetings, or practicing the leadership skills as part of their Lead Lab project. We want students to find their voice and hopefully gain confidence.”
KIMMEL NAMED LOWER SCHOOL AWARDS TO BIGGS CHAIR
Proudly presented by Head of Upper School Chris Nelson at the year-end Faculty & Staff Breakfast, the Peter Biggs Chair of Excellence in the Teaching of History was awarded to Upper School history teacher Dr. Julie Kimmel.
At the Lower School Assembly, Head of School Rich Schellhas presented the annual Kershaw Medals, named after former Head of School William “Pap” Kershaw (1877-1915), one of the most important administrators in GA history. The award for honor, scholarship, deportment, and general character was bestowed upon (left to right) Andrei Vava ’24, Celina Bagchi ’24, Benjamin Getson ’25, and Kiran Bagga ’25.

YOUNGEST LEARNERS MAINTAIN COMMUNITY GARDEN
While recess is certainly a popular part of the day for every first grade student, perhaps even more popular is the chance to visit the Community Garden.
“We developed a farm-to-table joint science and social studies unit that we piloted in first grade last year,” said Lower School science teacher Lisa Martin. And, this special unit also supports the health and wellness program. “It is well-documented in research that elementary school children are more willing to eat healthy vegetables after they have grown them in a school-based gardening program,” said Martin. “This is becoming a reality for our youngest members of the GA community.”
After learning how to plant and harvest the vegetables, the students went on a field trip to the Flourtown Farmers Market and Flourtown Giant supermarket as a part of their social studies curriculum.
“We talk a great deal with the kids about the process of how our food comes to the table,” said first grade teacher Sarah Na. “One of the projects was to create a farmer’s market like they saw on their field trip. The students priced products, and they thought about what their customers would want and need. They did a lot of collaborative work that required a lot of problem solving, and they also learned about running a business in a micro kind of way. This was a really fun and interdisciplinary curriculum piece.” Their PreK peers dressed up in fancy market attire to shop at the new market and offer the students involved a great sense of accomplishment.
“Besides developing a green thumb, they are planting and harvesting collectively, encouraging GA community development, and instilling a sense of place” noted Martin. “Their gardening and social studies projects are inspiring them to be collaborative in action. They are feeding the GA community by sending their vegetables to the GA Dining Room, promoting healthy eating habits, and demonstrating the principles of stewardship.”
Our first grade students are living the GA mission!

FOREVER PATRIOTS
CAMPUS LIFE
Peter Drewniany 1760
Germantown Academy said farewell to seven faculty at the end of the 2016-17 school year. Each shared what it meant to be a teacher of young minds at the Academy.
Upper School English, 35 years “I think the best part about teaching isn’t actually the teaching, it’s the interaction with the students. I think a classroom without fun is a wasteland. I really enjoyed being a part of a department for 35 years that has changed so much, yet has always been crazy good to work with.”
Waneta Doriss
Lower School Assistant Teacher, 13 years “GA is a home away from home. It is an environment where a teacher can share the teaching skills they develop throughout a career and continue to learn more. The people you work with are not just your colleagues - they are your family.”
Ted Haynie 1760
Upper School English, 35 years “The important things are commitment, responsibility, graciousness, and positivity. It doesn’t matter whether you teach Spanish or chemistry, you’re teaching kids to be better human beings. We should all appreciate the gifts we are given, and our time at GA is a gift.”
Bridget Flynn 1760
Lower School Librarian, 31 years “I am thankful for this beautiful campus and a community of colleagues who love what they do. I have never experienced a day when I did not love my job. From talking about books and reading books with students to even greeting duty when I get to start the day outside saying ’good morning’ to our students, every day has been a great day!”
Gabrielle Russomagno 1760
Upper School Visual Art, 27 years “I am thankful for the support I have been given to be a bold educator; the agile and open hearts of my students; the opportunity to expand a definition of creativity to include work that happens through the school and not only in art studios; and the look of awe on a student’s face when they see an image appear on a piece of photographic paper for the very first time.”
Debbie Mersky 1760
Middle School Spanish, 30 years “I feel as though I have reached a summit of a mountain. I look back, and I can see where I’ve been. The journey has been good. I have been fortunate, and I am grateful. I look ahead, and I see where I want to go. I am excited. I came across a Facebook post that said ’You are never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream.’ It made me smile.”
Emily Rubinfield 1760
Middle School History, 30 years “The nature of independent schools is to be... independent. My classroom was my playing field. Though the amazing Middle School history department most often calls the plays together, we also have the rare privilege of being the coach and quarterback of our many teams. In education today, this independence is a rarity, and it should be cherished by each and every one of us. Our kids are independent in thought and collaborative in action (among other qualities), and so are GA teachers.”

MAGICAL SENIOR SEASON
Abbe Goldstein ’17 capped off a majestic career here at GA in 2017. By winning both the Inter-Ac League and PAISAA girls cross country races, she helped the Patriots claim both titles. She then won the mile at the Hispanic Games and the Millrose Games before claiming the one mile and 3,000-meter state indoor titles. Outdoors, Goldstein took third in the High School Girls’ Mile Run Championship at the Penn Relays before cleaning up at the Inter-Ac Championship, where she won the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 races (with a new meet record of 11:03.97). She was named the Judy Krouse Outstanding Performer, and the All-Intelligencer Track & Field Athlete of the Year. This past summer, she competed in the 20th Maccabiah Games in Israel where she won three gold medals, before heading to Harvard University this fall to compete for the cross country program. 14/THE PATRIOT/GERMANTOWN ACADEMY
BOLEN HONORED BY INTER-AC LEAGUE
Lilly Bolen ’17 gave her blood, sweat, and tears to GA’s girls water polo, basketball, and lacrosse teams for four seasons, so it came as no surprise that she was the Academy’s 2017 honoree at the annual Girls Inter-Ac Athletic League Athletic Directors’ Award Dinner where she received the Aimee Willard Award.
ELEVATING TO THE TOP After a breakout year that saw him conquer the local track and field arena, Kyle Garland ’18 became the youngest American decathlete ever to qualify for the 2017 Junior Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru where he went on to win a silver medal in the decathlon with 7,212 points. Garland also won a gold medal in the decathlon at the 2017 Caribbean Scholastic Invitational in Cuba. In the spring, Garland was the 110-meter hurdles champion with a meet-record of 14.28, and the long jump champion with a schoolrecord of 23-2. He was named the All-Intelligencer Boys Track Athlete of the Year. Indoors, Garland won a national championship in the boys pentathlon at the New Balance Indoor Nationals with 4,150 points, a new junior all-time record, and won a pair of state titles in the 60-meter hurdles and the high jump with a mark of 6-10.75, which set a new PA Indoor State meet record.
Dear GA Community,
On behalf of the Germantown Academy Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and students, THANK YOU for your generosity during the 2016-17 fiscal year. Nearly 2,000 members of our school community collectively contributed more than $1.7 million towards GA’s operating budget. The loyal commitment of the individuals listed made this terrific achievement possible.
Each year, our school relies on philanthropic support to meet the daily needs of students and equip faculty with the resources they depend on to educate and inspire young Patriots. The generosity of our community ensures that GA is able to provide students across all three divisions with impactful academics that inspire a love of learning and engaging curricular and extracurricular experiences that will serve them throughout their lives. Together, we will continue to fulfill GA’s mission on campus and beyond.
Thank you, again, for your participation. Sincerely,

After hanging out in the Philly area for a year post-GAretirement, Kendall Mattern 1760 and his wife Maria, along with their two golden retrievers, made their long-planned move out west in June. They have now officially retired to the high southern desert of Utah near St. George, and are enjoying every element! From ancient archaeological sites, to the dry desert heat, to donning cowboy (and cowgirl!) hats, to encountering their first “rattler,” the Matterns are loving the west.

Over the course of six decades, Reverend Reid preached and spoke close to 4,000 times, officiated at 402 weddings, and 502 funerals, memorial services, and committals. He also conducted 735 baptisms of infants, youth, and adults. He has been married for 63 years to the former Amy Strayer of Lancaster. They have four grown and married children, and five grandchildren. Richard Rewalt ’54 has written and released a young adult novel, Black Ghost of Nashville: Searching for Maggie. The story is based on the experiences of his own dog, Maggie, who was lost but made it back to Richard’s home.

ALUMNI NOTES
FROMYOUR PRESIDENT
Back to school sales seem to start earlier and earlier these days for new back packs, sneakers and snacks, which reminds me of my GA days. I am reminded of smelling the sweet honeysuckles on campus and learning how to eat them. Though I will always mourn the summer, I am thrilled to start this school year as your Alumni Society Board (ASB) President. Having served on the ASB for the past two years, my view of alumni has widened, changing my focus towards improving our community rather than just planning reunions. Also dedicated to these types of improvements, the ASB and Office of Institutional Advancement (OIA) have focused on being receptive to alumni’s thoughts and ideas. Over the past year, several small focus groups have taken place and what we’ve learned has helped define three tenants that are also reflected on GA’s new website (www.germantownacademy.net/alumni):
•CONNECT– Over time we are brought together by our various stages of life. In order to find alumni in the same “class of
correspondent for the Times, where he writes about government relations, corporate agendas, and Congress. He previously won a Pulitzer Prize in 1992 for Explanatory Journalism and again in 2015 for Investigative Journalism.
Mark Korman ’86 wrote that he visited classmate Robin Bissell ’86 during the last week that Bissell was shooting his latest film project in Atlanta. life,” we’ll need to stay connected. One new venture, PatriotConnect.net, has started to accomplish this, allowing alumni with similar interests to get together, share employment opportunities, hire alumni and network in career and life. Log in and find me - let’s connect!
•INSPIRE – So many of you have mentioned wanting to help current GA students. There are plenty of opportunities to come back for Career Day, speak to one of the many clubs or host a senior for Senior Project. Contact Heather Durkin (267.405.7374) to see how you can help.
•GIVE – GA relies on all of us to be faithful stewards of the school. While it can be hard to see new buildings and beloved teachers retire, we need to continue to create opportunities for students by supporting the Annual Fund.
With your involvement, GA can continue to grow both honeysuckle and relationships and strive for excellence as an independent private school - a school in which I hope you are a proud alum. The school is changing for the better, the best. As loyal alumni, let’s lead the way.

ACADEMY CLUB INDUCTEES
Each year, early June is a busy time at GA, with many end-of-year activities and celebrations. One of them is the annual Academy Club Induction dinner, during which the seniors selected by their classmates to be in the 93-year-old club are celebrated for the work they’ve already done in their senior year and will continue as alumni. In 2017, Alumni Society Board President Cathy Thompson ’77 presided over the ceremony and reflected upon her own induction 40 years ago. “Your engagement over the last year has helped foster an important connection between GA and its alumni base. There is no doubt that the Class of 2017 has made an excellent selection of new members.”
As has been the recent tradition, new members who are legacy Academy Club members (sibling or parent who is an Academy Club member) have the honor of

Kreilick, joined by colleague and friend Zeinaab Blindio, spent the day presenting lessons and recipes from her book, Let’s Cook for Ramadan! with some of the Academy’s youngest Patriots. In addition to learning about the history and meaning of Ramadan, Kindergarteners had lessons in writing Arabic and prepared and feasted on tabbouleh, one of the most popular dishes served at Ramadan. The pride and passion for her work is obvious. “It felt, for me, like coming full circle: I started at GA, learning languages and testing them out in the wide world,” she reflected. “Here I am, 40 years later, writing books in many languages and sharing them with people from all over the world! Thank you for the opportunity to finish the circle.”
After GA, Cynthia graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in International Relations. She has worked in children’s television production, museum education, journalism and early childhood education, and speaks Spanish, French, and Russian.
In 2011 Kreilick founded Morning Circle Media which “publishes beautiful, bilingual children’s books that feature the diverse communities of Philadelphia. We collaborate with the best writers and illustrators in our region to promote an appreciation of culture, language and art,” the website explains. She refers to the company as an “enterprise” because

of the multiple facets of its outreach – book publishing, teacher training, and classroom visits – all in the name of promoting bilingual literacy and cultural understanding while demonstrating the talents of authors and illustrators in the local Philadelphia area.
Being an entrepreneur has also been a life-altering learning experience for Kreilick. Flexibility, “liberty to design your own path,” and watching a seedling of an idea grow are among the highlights for her so far. Up next, Kreilick is looking to go virtual, turning some of her books into a total immersion experience for 5-12 year olds.
“I’d love my teachers to know how much they’ve influenced my career path in education,” she commented after being back on campus. “Mr. [Richard] House, Mr. [Dwight] Peterson and Mr. [Ted] Handy all had a huge influence on my love of languages and my confidence in teaching.”
Natalie Negro ’08 became engaged to Erick Violago last fall and finished her public health graduate degree in the spring. Their wedding date is July 28.

ALUMNI NOTES
EXPLORING A NEW FRONTIER: SETH HARLEM ’00 LAUNCHES BIOTECHNOLOGY COMPANY Many entrepreneurs will tell you that starting your own company is much like riding a roller coaster. There are ups and there are downs and plenty of twists in between, but as with alum Seth Harlem ’00, they enjoy the calculated risk of the journey and relish the feeling of taking a finished product to the marketplace.
“I’m certainly attracted to working on my own, and I enjoy taking something from an idea into reality,” said Harlem, who has worked on a number of start-ups in the past and is currently the CEO and co-founder of Taithera, Inc., a biotechnology company in New York City that was started in 2016. Taithera was created to develop a first-in-class bone targeted drug delivery platform for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. The core of Taithera’s revolutionary platform is a nanoparticle that is programmed to deliver therapeutics directly to the site of a bone lesion. This targeted delivery platform can be used to treat primary and metastatic bone cancers, fractures, osteoporosis, and other bone conditions. “There is definitely risk involved. In the biotech industry the probability [of taking a product to marketplace] is very low. Our goal as entrepreneurs is to mitigate that risk. We’re going to take a chance and recognize that success is rare, but if we don’t try then it’s guaranteed not to happen.” Harlem’s past experiences set him up to leap into the wild world of
biotechnology, including, but not limited to his time at Zipmark, Inc. and ToastBack. For two years he worked at Zipmark, a financial technology start-up company where he was the first employee hired. During his time there he helped build a team, raise venture capital, and launch a product. A little further down the road, Harlem reconnected with a former Zipmark coworker to launch a data analytics platform called ToastBack to help alcohol brands better know their clients. Harlem and his partner had plenty of support, but ultimately their product never received enough traction so they moved on. Such is the life of an entrepreneur.
As an undergraduate, Harlem earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Asian Studies at Trinity College. He also minored in Chinese and earned a language certificate in Mandarin from Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Most recently, Harlem was a fellow at ELabNYC, or more formally, Entrepreneurship Lab Bio and Health Tech, a sort of professional boot camp geared toward scientists starting their own companies, although he was coming from the business world into the biotechnology sphere.
“I love working on early stage projects,” said Harlem. “I love learning about areas where I don’t have a lot of expertise. Being exposed to new topics is great. The idea of taking something from an idea to a real product is really exciting. The more time you spend in the start-up world, at least for me, the more I became attracted to doing something on my own. Eventually I built up enough confidence, with the incredible support of my family (Seth is married to Rebecca and they have a 15 month old son, Elijah) to say ’now or never.’”

Class Agents: Connect, Inspire, Give.
The GA Class Agent Program is the Academy’s largest alumni volunteer program, and offers an opportunity for alums to:
• Reconnect with former classmates while encouraging communication, engagement and support. • Class Agents are the primary liaison between the Academy and their class and play a vital role in maintaining a vibrant alumni community. • The goal is to have 2-3 volunteers per class, and there are some classes who still need agents, particularly 2010-2017.
Visit www.germantownacademy.net/classagents to see a listing of all agents and if your class is not listed, please consider volunteering. For questions, email Jessica.Holl@germantownacademy.org.
