Welcome

by Mickey Suiter Do you remember the first time you walked into an LGBT meeting place? Even though it was a long time ago, I still remember. I was fortunate in that I didn’t go alone – I went with my friend Jeff. Even so, it was scary. Jeff had to practically drag me up the sidewalk to the door of the building and then I had to drag him down the hall to the meeting. I can’t imagine how hard it would have been if I’d been alone, or if I would have had the courage to go at all. Walking into a strange place filled with people one has never met can be a bit intimidating even without factoring in the whole coming out thing. Even for those who are not just coming out, who may be checking out a newly discovered resource or who are new to the area, the first time here can be a bit unsettling. And for those who are just coming out, well, it can be a nerve-wracking experience. So when you see someone new at GAAMC, keep that in mind. Remember how you felt your first time. While most of our mothers taught us not to talk to strangers, this isn’t

Advertisers Are Noticing You! Won't you please notice our advertisers? We're proud to have more ads (more than we can ever remember) in this issue. the type of situation they were talking about. I know it isn’t easy walking up to someone you’ve never met and starting a conversation. Some of us are more outgoing than others, so try to be as hospitable as you are comfortable with. At the very least, smile and say hello. Most of the GAAMC regulars know each other pretty well thanks to our socials, Open Talk and Circles. It’s so much easier for us to just talk to those we already know. But even that closeness we feel toward each other can be a little disquieting to newcomers, giving them a feeling of being left out. GAAMC is a safe space filled with wonderful people but that’s not always apparent at first glance. If we each make just a little more effort to be welcoming we can make our Monday nights even more of a warm, friendly experience. As Will Rogers said, “A stranger is just a friend I haven’t met yet.”

Queer news from around the world A lesbian couple in Michigan, already battling the state's ban on adoptions by unmarried couples, has expanded their legal fight to tackle Michigan's marriage amendment. April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse, who have three special-needs children, is the first couple to challenge the state's marriage amendment since it was passed in 2004. In the amended lawsuit filed in federal court, the Hazel Park women are seeking to change the state's laws that prevent same-sex couples from marrying and adopting children. The suit claims Gov. Rick Snyder, Attorney General Bill Schuette and Oakland County Clerk Bill Bullard are denying them the same constitutional rights afforded to heterosexual couples. (Detroit News) California lawmakers passed a bill that would ban so-called conversion therapy to reverse the sexual orientation of LGBT minors. This paves the way for the state to become the first to prohibit licensed therapists from engaging in a practice that state Senator Ted Lieu (D), the bill's sponsor, calls "quackery." Prior to the 51-21 Assembly vote, John Perez (D), the lower house's first openly gay speaker, said "there is a question of what kinds of laws we should be debating, and I think none are more important than laws that speak to our very humanity as people.” (Reuters)

support marriage equality, indicating some confusion about the referendum's language. If passed, the referendum would ratify legislation passed last February and signed by Governor Chris Gregoire (D), making Washington the seventh state to legalize marriage equality. (SeattlePI.com; ThinkProgress.org) Richard Tisei (photo, left), a socially progressive and openly gay Republican, could become the first GOP candidate elected to the U.S. House from Massachusetts in more than 15 years. He’s facing incumbent Representative John Tierney (D), whose wife was recently sent to prison after pleading guilty to helping family members run an illegal gambling operation. Tisei says he won’t be afraid to work with Democrats in Congress, pointing out he only voted for former Gov. Mitt Romney’s policies about half the time when he served in the state Senate. (National Public Radio)

Maryland Delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. (D) has written to Steve Biscotti, owner of the Baltimore Ravens, asking him to forbid linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo (photo, left) from speaking out in support of marriage equality. Ayanbadejo has publicly supported efforts to defend Maryland's marriage equality law, which opponents are trying to overturn via a statewide ballot question this NoThe outcome of Minnesota's vote on a proposed vember. Burns wrote, "Many of my constituents constitutional amendment to define marriage as the and your football supporters are appalled and union of a man and woman is a "tossup," according aghast that a member of the Ravens Football Team to new polls. Public Policy Polling, a North would step into this controversial divide and try to Carolina-based firm that conducts surveys primarily From top: Richard Tisei; sway public opinion one way or the other." Burns' for Democrats, found 48% of likely voters in favor of Brendon Ayanbadejo letter drew an angry, profanity-laden online rebutthe amendment, 47% opposed, and 5% not sure. A tal from Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe suppoll released by a different polling organization, porting Ayanbadejo's actions, as well as messages of support Survey USA, in conjunction with KSTP-TV, found stronger from Ayanbadejo's Ravens teammates, a majority of other past support among likely voters for the marriage amendment. In and current NFL players, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. that poll, 50% of Minnesotans were in favor, 43% opposed, and (Washington Post; New York Times) 8% undecided. (Pioneer Press, St. Paul) Nevada’s constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage will be coming under attack from two sides in the coming months. Assemblyman Elliot Anderson (D-Las Vegas) has asked that a bill be drawn to wipe out the constitutional prohibition passed by the voters in 2000 and 2002. His legislation will be introduced after the Legislature convenes in February. Nevada voters in 2000 first approved a proposed constitutional amendment limiting marriage to between men and women by a vote of 69.6 percent to 30.3 percent. The final vote in 2002 favoring the prohibition was 67 percent to 33 percent. Anderson’s bill would start the process to eliminate the ban. It would have to pass the 2013 session of the Legislature and then be approved by the voters. Separately, a hearing is set for federal court in Reno in November on a suit filed by eight same-sex couples asserting that everyone has the right to marry. Tom Warnke, public information officer for Lambda Legal, the group that prepared the legal challenge, said a hearing is set for November 26 on a motion by the state to dismiss the suit. There is also a motion for a summary judgment in favor of Lambda Legal to be argued. (Las Vegas Sun) A new poll of Washington state voters finds 52% support Referendum 74, which would approve marriage rights for same-sex couples. 40% oppose the measure, and 8% say they're undecided, the poll found. The poll also found that 11% of those who said they opposed the referendum also said they

The Springfield, MO City Council took up a proposed ordinance that would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in matters of pubic housing, accommodations, and employment. At a meeting packed with activists on both sides of the issue, council members postponed a vote on both the ordinance and a bill proposing to put the issue on the ballot this November, instead appointing a citizenled task force to work toward a compromise on the measure. Advocates say the fight over gay rights is most contentious in the Midwest. (KOLR-TV, Springfield) The Chicago Police Department has quietly adopted a general order that mandates the respectful treatment of transgender detainees. The policy, a major goal of more than 30 community groups for over two years, went into effect Aug. 22. The order mandates that police not search transgender people in an attempt to determine their gender, that officers respect preferred names and pronouns for transgender detainees and that they not use someone's gender identity as assumed cause for a crime. It further bans derogatory language against trans people. The policy comes after years of complaints from transgender women who reported that police stop them for walking at night on the assumption that they are engaged in sex work. Dancing To Architecture™ Music Reviews & News with a Queer ear by Bill Realman Stella The Best-So-Far, Part 5: Dancing To Architecture Televised Performances by Artists Selected for 2012's 150+ Favorite "Top 10" Albums list Are you wowed by music on television? Or does it bore you? You may be among those with the good fortune to have equipment to hear great music through your TV in high fidelity, a change from most everyone's experience of televised sound less than 15 years ago. But digital formats and other market pressures conspire to muffle music's potentially huge experiential impact into tinny fluff, to downsize its far-reaching cultural impact into a small box. But exceptional performances, by great contemporary S t musicians, do occur, and push back at the walls hemming Pop Music in. For instance, as I wrote last issue, Frank Ocean's debut on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon was exceptional. And both in our last issue and last spring I wrote about Sinead O'Connor's indelible performance on the Graham Norton Show of her song "The Wolf Is Getting Married." Like I said: Exceptional. In a typical four-minute music segment for a Rock band on a TV talk show, I tend to tell myself, "Don't expect much." Most bands don't know how to take true advantage of a live-to-tape four minute television moment. And with little interesting happening onstage for the cameras to capture most of the time, studio directors tip-toe gingerly around tried-and-tested formulas, turning to close-ups of singers and jump-cuts between band members. Trying to relax, with big stakes on the table for their rare prime-time broadcast, they too often just look bored or lost. But when a band gets it right, it's a breathtaking sight to behold. And when only maybe a few hundred thousand watched, well, one has to share it and share it again, and point and say "Did you see that????". I mean, Did you see Frank Turner on Conan recently?

mended if you like Bob Mould, Bouncing Souls, Against Me!, The Gaslight Anthem, Hamell On Trial, or Alkaline Trio — I very much do! I'm enamored of Turner's 2008 album Love, Ire and Song (What a title!), but I've only begun exploring his back catalog. Of his new one, England Keep My Bones, Turner says, "I wanted to push myself to go further towards the edges of the little sort of field that I'm in…. I wanted the loud bits to be louder and the quiet bits to be quieter and just stretch out in to all of the stylistic territories that I'm inhabiting right now... I wanted to be more ambitious." (from Challenge September 2011) Back then, I also quoted from Punk News.org's review of Turner's bold, ballsy, beautiful album England Keep My Bones: "First single 'I Still Believe' has been floating around for the Just a li t t le bi t lon ger n ow. . . better part of a year. (continued from page 4) A tough-on-immigration Arizona sheriff, who resigned as cochair of Mitt Romney's state campaign after allegations he threatened a male lover with deportation, has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing. Earlier this year, Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu asked the office to investigate claims made by his former boyfriend, Jose Orozco, accusing the lawman of abuse of authority, threats, and intimidation. Babeu acknowledged at the time he is gay and had a personal relationship with Orozco, who was reported to be from Mexico, but denied that at the time he is gay and had a personal relationship with Orozco, who was reported to be from Mexico, but denied that he had made any threat to deport him. Solicitor General Dave Cole announced, "The investigation determined that Babeu did not commit any criminal violations and further concluded that, although Orozco conducted himself in a manner that may constitute a violation of the law, there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction on anything more than a misdemeanor charge." (Reuters) United-Continental Airlines is being sued by a gay couple from Virginia after they allegedly found a sex toy taped to their luggage. Christopher Bridgeman and Martin Borger were returning to Norfolk from Costa Rica via Houston on May 21, 2011. In Houston, they claimed their luggage, went through customs, then re-checked the bags. At baggage claim in Norfolk, they found a dildo, which had been removed from one of their bags, covered in a "greasy, foul-smelling substance" and "taped prominently" to the top of their bag, the lawsuit states. The couple, who have been together for nine years, are seeking punitive damages from the airline for invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligence. Meanwhile, the airline has denied any wrongdoing. (New York Daily News) Brazil's social security agency has for the first time granted a four-month "maternity" leave for a man in a civil union with another man. Lucimar da Silva asked for the leave two years ago when he and his partner adopted a child. Brazilian law mandates that companies provide a four-month paid leave from work for a mother and five days paid leave for a father. Silva argued it would be discriminatory to deny him the longer leave, noting the social security agency has already approved the four-month benefit for same-sex couples in which the partners are women. An agency statement Thursday says the decision does not set a legal precedent, adding that all-male couples with adopted children will have to individually petition for the four-month leave. (Guardian.co.uk) France's Justice Minister, Christiane Taubira, unveiled an outline of the Socialist government’s proposed marriage equality bill, expected in spring 2013. The new law “will extend the current arrangements of marriage to members of the same sex,” Taubira told the press. "That means that a gay person can marry, adopt children, and become a 'parent' of their partner's biological child in the same way that a straight person can today." Taubira’s comments ruffled feathers among French hardline conservatives and Catholic advocates, who reiterated their belief that marriage should only be a union between man and woman and that children should be brought up within a mother-father family unit. Among the LGBT community, the overall reaction was sour since one major item, fertility assistance, was missing from the bill. (France24.com) A newly inflamed debate in Germany over expanding rights of couples in civil unions arose when Katherina Reiche, a senior official in the Environment Ministry, was quoted in the press is urging her party, the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), to "say clearly that it stands for family, children, and marriage," citing the low birth rate in Germany. Not only did Reiche's comments provoke outraged response from the German GLBT community, but they also revealed a split in the CDU itself over the issue. The CDU has not sought repeal of Germany's civil unions legislation, which came into force in 2001. (Der Spiegel/Spiegel.de)

Platforma Obywatelska, the ruling center-right political party in Poland, is expected to put forward legislation that would create civil partnerships for gay and straight couples alike. A proponent of the measure says it is more conservative in scope than previous legislation, as the bill excludes rights such as joint tax benefits, citizenship rights, and adoption. Opposition to the proposed law is expected from both inside and outside the party. (Advocate.com) Lebanon’s justice minister, Shakib Qortbawi, demanded an end to the use of anal probe exams used to find out if men are gay. During an interview with the Lebanese paper Assafir, the minister acknowledged that the judiciary is totally independent but requested they should listen to his and the Lebanese Medical Association’s opinion. The minister’s statement is interpreted as drawing a line on a public debate that ensued in Lebanon following a case where 36 men were subjected to the tests and were forced to pay for them after being arrested in a police raid on a porn cinema where men meet for gay sex. (Albawaba.com) A play that highlights the difficulties of being gay in Uganda has been forced to abandon its run in the capital, Kampala. The River and the Mountain, by British playwright Beau Hopkins, tells the story of a young businessman coming to terms with being gay in a climate of homophobia. It was due to be performed at the National Theatre of Uganda last week before the regulating Media Council intervened, saying the script needed to be cleared by authorities — not normally a requirement for theatrical productions. Some shows went ahead at two smaller venues, but the National Theatre refused to stage the scheduled performances. (Guardian.co.uk)

"I Still Believe " ~ © Frank Turner

Hear ye, hear ye, Friends and Romans, Countrymen. Hear ye, hear ye, Punks and Skins and Journeymen. Hear ye, hear ye, My sisters and my brethren. The time is coming near. Come ye, come ye, to soulless corporate circus tops. Come ye, come ye, to toilet circuit touring snobs. Come ye, come ye, to bedrooms, bars & bunker squats. The sound is ringing clear. Now who'd have thought that after all, Something as simple as rock 'n' roll would save us all. And who'd have thought that after all, It was rock 'n' roll. Hear ye, hear ye, Now anybody could take this stage. Hear ye, hear ye, and make miracles for minimum wage. Hear ye, hear ye, These folk songs for the modern age, Will hold us in their arms. Right here, right now, Elvis brings his children home. Right here, right now, You never have to feel alone. Right here, right now, Teenage kicks and gramophones. We hold them in our hearts. Now who'd have thought that after all, Something as simple as rock 'n' roll would save us all. Now who'd have thought that after all, it was rock 'n' roll. And I Still Believe (I Still Believe) in the saints. Yeah, in Jerry Lee and in Johnny and all the greats. And I Still Believe (I Still Believe) in the sound, That has the power to raise a temple & tear it down. And I Still Believe (I Still Believe) in the need, For guitars and drums and desperate poetry. And I Still Believe (I Still Believe) that everyone, Can find a song for every time they've lost And every time they've won. Just remember folks we not just saving lives, We're saving souls, and we're having fun. And I Still Believe. Now who'd have thought that after all, Something as simple as rock 'n' roll would save us all. Now who'd have thought that after all, Something so simple, something so small. Who'd have thought, that after all It's rock 'n' roll?

Rodriguez — Live on The Late Show with David Letterman

Rodriguez ~ "Crucify Your Mind" ~ from the motion picture soundtrack, Searching For Sugar Man

It's an amazing story, Rodriguez's, one better told by NPR, who have the uncanny skill to hint at an epic of a life within one brief photo caption: "Detroit singer Sixto Rodriguez's sweet voice and socially conscious lyrics made him a legend in apartheid-era South Africa. This photo appears on the cover of his second album, Coming from Reality (1971)." Speaks volumes, right? Seek out The Late Show with David Letterman clip from August 14 and the trailer for the movie (find the links above), and be amazed.

Treme, Season 3 ~ HBO, Sundays, 10 pm

Treme isn't something I can just tell you about. Treme is something one needs to experience for oneself. Beautiful, complex, nuanced — and I think of the characters that way first, then the music. What I can tell you is

this: Treme is my favorite television drama. The first two seasons have been magnificent. The show's soundtracks are packed wall to wall with glorious classic music (relatively unknown by most Americans, criminally underappreciated) of a variety that puts all other TV shows featuring music to shame. But it's the original music, including real, live performances full of passion, art, and heart, which often cause my jaw to drop. And the first episode of Season 3 was all of the above, plus exciting, brilliant, promising, tuneful, hot… Watch Treme. Hear great music. Q The New Normal: Candy-coated barbed-wire ~ Must squeeze in a recommendation of a great new TV show with magnificent characters. Even its incidental and transitional music is well done. Just watch it!

Q · Rufus Wainwright ~ "Jericho" ~ Out Of The Game

What I wrote in the May 2012 DTA re: Rufus bears repeating: "He opens his mouth wide enough when he sings to hear the fullness of his voice. We can hear his voice in his voice — at last!" Proof of this new phase of his career, is his performance on Letterman of "Jericho". Like much of the new album, Rufus wrote an unconventionally beautiful melody (I keep thinking he's growing into Burt Bacharach's melodic territory) and, for a song which intends to have the last word. His mushy-mouthed juvenile days are finally behind him. This now is the sound of a young man unashamed and unbowed by his life.
