A New Cooking Experience

Gabriella Jacobsen

A New Cooking Experience Research. Develop. Design 4 Weeks

How could a stove combat social isolation, and keep seniors living independently longer?

Team Members: Gabriella Jacobsen, Stephen Shickel, Andrew Kimbro

Elderly Individuals who live independently often suffer from social isolation due to loss in mobility and transportation. However, they still desire frequent communication with their loved ones without becoming a burden. Our team identified cooking as a crucial part of the socialization process, and have created an induction stove that facilitates a safe, interactive, and stimulating cooking experience.

2

Focus: Enhancing personal independence in seniors rather than providing a service.

We interviewed 6 independent living seniors to access their ideal social cooking experience:

Providing a helping hand at critical times

Margret (Age 87)

Becoming empowered, having increased self-esteem and a feeling of being in control of their own lives

Relying on themselves and each other to problem solve and provide support

? Question: How can we create this in a cooking experience? 3

David (Age 86)

“I have never been so isolated as I am now as a retired person. I was born into a big family, and was always surrounded by people in high school, college and work.

Integrated System

Induction Stove Stove Controls

The New Cooking Experience is an integrated system combining the safety and functionality of induction cooking, with the practicality of a cooking + recipe interface, and the stimulation of video calling and streaming.

8

Universal Design

A single glass surface provides for extremely easy clean up, and lack of knobs allows the stove to be used as extra counter-space when not cooking.

All controls are in the front of the stove so the user never needs to reach across the hot surface or pot, potentially endangering themselves. The burners are placed further back on the stove to avoid accidents where the user may bump the pot handle, or knock hot liquid onto themselves. 9

The stove is capable of fitting in ADA kitchens and is compatible for individuals in a wheelchair. Face to face interaction can still be maintained at various heights.

Conclusion

In conclusion, our new cooking experience provides a sense of security and stability for individuals who wish to age comfortably and safely in their own homes. The experience allows the individual to maintain invaluable face-to -face communication with their community and loved ones in a digital age.

Mobile App For Young Adults with Hearing Loss

Research. Design. Prototype Team Project. 3 Weeks

Our team was challenged with creating a mobile app for young adults with progressive hearing loss. We focused on creating an app that would work seamlessly with a Bluetooth hearing aid and small wireless speaker (technology currently on the market). Understanding our user was incredibly important; individuals with progressive hearing loss tend to be ashamed of their disability and scared of their progressing deafness. Our app sought to support our user where needed, without being a distraction to his or her lifestyle.

He fears that his illness will mean that he won’t be able to hang out with his friends and family in the same way. He dreads being isolated from those he loves. He is technologically savvy and owns a smart phone. He is open to incorporating more technology into his life if it will give him a better chance of communicating with those around him.

Meet Warren Warren gets a late start because he doesn’t hear his alarm go off.

At work, Warren is frustrated because he can’t hear his boss clearly and messes up his tasks.

At a bar after dinner, Warren begins to flirt with a pretty girl, but the crowd in the bar makes it hard to hear her, and eventually the girl becomes annoyed with Warren and leaves him to join her friends elsewhere.

Personal Passion

Ceramics Hand Vessel

Design. Mold. Slip Cast. 3 Weeks

I have a love for the process of slip casting ceramics. It is a small miracle to watch a material’s chemical complexion go from liquid to stone in the form of one’s own design. Slip casting requires diligence and a gentle touch. The objective is to create an absolutely perfect positive to cast a flawless mold resulting in a beautiful object. For this project I created milk and sugar vessels with a gentle swale designed to compliment the hand and ridges that allowed for a more secure finger grip.
