A New Cooking Experience Research. Develop. Design 4 Weeks

Elderly Individuals who live independently often suffer from social isolation due to loss of mobility and transportation. However, they still desire frequent communication with their loved ones without becoming a burden. Our team identified cooking as a crucial part of the socialization process, and have created an induction stove that facilitates a safe, interactive, and stimulating cooking experience.

Integrated System

Induction Stove Stove Controls

The New Cooking Experience is an integrated system combining the safety and functionality of induction cooking, with the practicality of a cooking + recipe interface, and the stimulation of video calling and streaming.

6

Universal Design

A single glass surface provides for extremely easy clean up, and lack of knobs allows the stove to be used as extra counter-space when not cooking.

All controls are in the front of the stove so the user never needs to reach across the hot surface or pot, potentially endangering themselves. The burners are placed further back on the stove to avoid accidents where the user may bump the pot handle, or knock hot liquid onto themselves. 7

The stove is capable of fitting in ADA kitchens and is compatible for individuals in a wheelchair. Face to face interaction can still be maintained at various heights.

What if Mother Nature comes knocking when a girl isn’t ready? Most women find the average public restroom sanitary napkin dispenser to be unreliable, while the menstrual cycle is almost always a guarantee. In a time when a woman finds herself suddenly and unexpectedly in need of a menstrual convenience product there should be a reliable method, and an approachable dispenser, for obtaining a such a product for a more reassuring and calming experience. 13

Product Research Social Media

Mail Home Market

From sanitary products to carrying cases, modern society is much more lighthearted about the menstrual cycle than in previous decades.

New services are dedicated to sending personalized menstruation care packages, moving further away from the current clinical setup.

Summary of Survey How would you describe your experience of using a public restroom tampon dispenser:

Number of Survey Participants: 600

61% of survey users would not use the current tampon dispenser again if given a choice. 50% Negative

94% of survey users would use

a public restroom tampon dispenser if adequate changes were made.

Form Development in Paper

One of the main complaints about current sanitary napkin dispensers is that they are cold in appearance and have no visual relationship to the female body. Thus, I chose to integrate curves, inspired by the feminine physique, directly into the aesthetic of the new dispenser. I worked between using cardstock and sketching to find and evaluate ideal curves within the form. The curve on the front panel would also act as a visual division between the area of payment and the area of display on the front of the device.

Curvature Exploration

Feature Exploration

Full Scale Mock-Up

Dieter Rams use of simple geometry on complex technical objects was my inspiration for the use of circles for the display screen, credit card reader, and deposit slot. The aesthetics of the circles do not clash with the dramatic curve on the front panel, and create a clean and minimalistic feeling. Users found the current dispenser’s narrow front deposit to be unsanitary, since it required the user to reach into the machine. I moved the product dispenser slot to the side, and instead the deposit would be brought forth to the user and could be pinched out of the machine with marginal contact.

16

User Testing and Feedback

Overall users enjoyed the new dispenser experience, especially the very open display of products. However, users believed the transition between the clear face and the white body needed to be more prominent, and the mechanics of the deposit should be concealed. Both were implicated in the ďŹ nal render.

Mobile App For Young Adults with Hearing Loss

Research. Develop. Prototype Team Project. 3 Weeks

Our team was challenged with creating a mobile app for young adults with progressive hearing loss. We focused on creating an app that would work seamlessly with a Bluetooth hearing aid and small wireless speaker (technology currently on the market). Understanding our user was incredibly important; individuals with progressive hearing loss tend to be ashamed of their disability and scared of their progressing deafness. Our app sought to support our user where needed, without being a distraction to his or her lifestyle.

Persona Warren is a young working professional, who recently has been diagnosed with progressive hearing loss. Warren leads an active life, and is known for his outgoing personality. He fears that his illness will mean that he won’t be able to hang out with his friends and family in the same way. He dreads being isolated from those he loves. He is technologically savvy and owns a smart phone. He is open to incorporating more technology into his life if it will give him a better chance of communicating with those around him.

Meet Warren Warren gets a late start because he doesn’t hear his alarm go off.

At work, Warren is frustrated because he can’t hear his boss clearly and messes up his tasks.

At a bar after dinner, Warren begins to flirt with a pretty girl, but the crowd in the bar makes it hard to hear her, and eventually the girl becomes annoyed with Warren and leaves him to join her friends elsewhere.

Personal Passion

Ceramics Hand Vessel

Design. Mold. Slip Cast. 3 Weeks

I have a love for the process of slip casting ceramics. It is a small miracle to watch a material’s chemical complexion go from liquid to stone in the form of one’s own design. Slip casting requires diligence and a gentle touch. The objective is to create an absolutely perfect positive to cast a flawless mold resulting in a beautiful object. For this project I created milk and sugar vessels with a gentle swale designed to compliment the hand and ridges that allowed for a more secure finger grip.
