the idea of a park that allows especially for naps and resting has really tickled my fancy. here I begin exploring how I may be able to create spaces that can be specifically slept in, but aren’t prescriptive in their program. I still want these spaces to allow for individuals to define the program, through a variety of private to social uses.

eureka! the design works so much b r i form aro spirals form the paths, and irregular shapes create the mounds in between.

sun

Ampitheatre oriented to the north, facing away from direct western sunset. More suitable for social events. Eg: Watching football, open air movie screenings, performances. 29

This site is a critical area along the Elizabeth Street Catchment

Floodzone

Provides an opportunity for intervention to prevent flooding on Elizabeth Street.

31

Diagrammatic maps from the Elizabeth Street Catchment Plan show that current drainage infrastructure is insufficient. The second map indicates that this site is an ‘open space opportunity’. 32

My solution! Mitigate flooding via the use of retarding basins, vegetation, and increased permeability throughout the site.

33

Redirecting water from Bouverie Street storm-water drain into site

34

35

Exploration= increasing permeability whilst maintaining dry soil for resting alcoves

36

Exploring the shape for the retarding basin: although I did not settle on this exact form, it influenced my decision to use multiple basins and to transform it into an ampitheatre.

37

38

Vegetation and undulation vegetation slows and catches the surface water runoff flowing from the north-east.

Retarding basins mitigate flooding along Elizabeth St Catchment by holding the water and allowing for gradual absorption through soil.

Feedback: There were a range of comments that came out of my week 12 presentation. The following are the ones that I believed were the most constructive for the next phase of my progress, and which I applied to my design and its representation.

- There was room to develop the design of the ampitheatre further, to incorporate the spiral motif and link to the rest of the site. - Improve the representation of certain perspective images by picking different views. - Show the nuance of the undulating topography through the use of my axonometrics. -Remove some of the water diagrams as they were repeating information. 45
