Gadgets Magazine is turning 25 this year. Since we started in 1999, we have seen how much tech has changed. In just 25 years, we come so far; mobile phones have rapidly developed, laptops and computers have become smaller yet more powerful and, finally, the internet, from its infancy, has taken over most aspects of our lives.

As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we look back on some of the major tech innovations that have changed our lives over the last 25 years.

Cutting the cord: How the mobile phone took over

The late 1990s and early 2000s were a great decade for mobile phones. Mobile phone manufacturers began the race to create a truly portable device. The 1990s saw a departure from the bulky Dynatacs of the 1980s (those massive phones from Motorola). It was during the 1990s when brands like Nokia and Motorola stepped up their game, introducing smaller devices. Nokia delivered hits like the Nokia 1011 and Nokia 9000 Communicator. Motorola leveraged its mobile development to come out with the Motorola Startac, the first clamshell mobile phone that was the predecessor to their iconic Razr series. The 1990s also gave us the first Blackberry devices in the form of the RIM 850 and 857. Finally, towards the end of the millennium, we got colored display mobile phones, courtesy of the Siemens S10.

The 2000s intensified the rapid innovations in mobile connectivity. The decade gave us some of the most iconic mobile phones, such as the Nokia 3310 launched in 2000. In the same year, we saw the first commercially available camera phone in the form of the Sharp J-SH04. There was also the now iconic Motorola RAZR V3 (ironically, the V3 was actually the first version), which set the standard on what a flip phone should be. Later in the decade, Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone in 2007, which totally disrupted the mobile phone landscape.

While the iPhone’s initial launch was nothing to write home about, the subsequent launch of the App Store changed the story. The App Store turned the regular mobile phone into a smartphone, a phone that can do it all. This was soon followed by the first Android device, also with its version of an app store initially called the Android Market, now the Google Play store.

It’s worth noting that the rapid evolution of broadband technology played a similarly crucial role in transforming the mobile phone. The 2000s saw the arrival of 3G and, with it, an exponentially larger data transfer capacity. 3G enabled us to access the internet on our mobile phones, and it allowed us to stay constantly connected even when we were on the go.

The 2010s would be the start of the development of the modern smartphone. The arrival of the iPhone

and Android sent shockwaves across the mobile world. Another player entered the race in the 2010s — Microsoft, with the launch of their now infamous Windows phones. Windows Phones initially had the potential to be a phone for the future, as Microsoft, after all, had made hit after hit with their PC OS.

Early Windows Phones had all the makings of a winner; they initially partnered and eventually bought Nokia, which was already miles ahead of everyone. They had good software at the beginning and even better hardware. The Nokia Lumia series essentially sparked off the smartphone camera war, and it was leaps and bounds ahead of its competitors. The Lumia 1020 had one of the best cameras on a phone ever. Unfortunately, a few years later, Microsoft sold Nokia and killed the Windows Phone project.

After the death of the Windows phone, what remained clear was that the world of mobile phones was going to be dominated by either Apple or Android. The app ecosystem from the two was further boosted by the arrival of 4G, allowing for faster connection speeds and larger data transfer of up to 1 GB/s. This opened the door to HD video calls on your device, streaming videos and movies, and the start of competitive mobile esports.

The transition from the 2010s to the 2020s was another pivotal era. Late 2019 saw 5G adoption around the world. 5G allowed users to reach speeds of up to 10 GB/s. The smartphone became a companion to many, a necessity for some. Appbased systems started to slow as many tried to expand their functions to become super apps able to do it all.

In the last couple of years, we’ve seen a new trend that could be changing smartphones – AI. Artificial intelligence has been in smartphones since its early days in the 2010s. Now, faster processors are allowing more powerful Large Language Model (LLM) AIs to make your smartphone smarter. Both Google and Apple have their own form of LLM integrated within their new devices. That said, it’s still too early to know if AI will dramatically impact the smartphone world.

Distant but connected: How the internet and computing reshaped our world

The mobile phone started a revolution in how we live. The arrival of 3G in the early 2000s allowed us to access the internet on the go. Ironically, at that time, many Filipino households did not have access to the internet and were unwilling to pay big bucks just to use a mobile data connection.

Back then, there was no major use for the internet, and it was hard to imagine that we would become a society that is heavily reliant on the internet. Now, most of our work and lives depend on structures that use the internet to communicate with one another.

In fact, in the late 1990s, no one knew if there was going to be an internet to speak of by the year 2000.

Just before the new millennium, there was a fear that the computer could not handle the shift to the millennium as they were not programmed to determine dates beyond December 31, 1999. The Y2K bug stoked fears that the world would be plunged into chaos if computers and software were

not quickly updated. Fortunately, or unfortunately, for the countries that spent millions, December 31, 1999, came and went, and the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2000, and nothing happened.

What did happen in just a few months’ time was the dot-com bubble. This stock market bubble grew in the 1990s as startups and venture capitalists saw massive potential to make money via the Internet. Amazon.com was one such company that leveraged the internet to sell books; it would also be one of the few that survived the bubble. Most internet startups then were online shops, online publications, and portals. When the bubble burst in March 2000, many did not survive, and it may have set ecommerce back by a few years.

The dot-com bubble did help in a way. When the bubble grew, there was a heavy investment in telecommunications. This would lead to more homes worldwide to connect to the internet. It also gave

us a semblance of what the modern internet would look like as companies like Google found investors during the growth of the bubble, and Amazon and eBay would set the standard on e-commerce while eBay’s subsidiary PayPal changed finance as we know it today.

The 2000s also saw the internet transform how we connect with one another. Instant messaging, like AOL, allowed us to talk despite the distance. Later on, services like Skype entered the fold and gave us video calls, turning simple texts into meaningful real-life conversations. The early 2000s also gave us social media, as Friendster and MySpace allowed us to share content about our lives with a select group of friends. Eventually, Facebook redefined what social media could be as it amassed the biggest user base and started a new trend in connections.

Speaking of new connections, the 2000s also gave rise to the adoption of Wi-Fi connectivity. During this period, Wi-Fi became a standard for wireless network connectivity. There was also Bluetooth for transferring data but on a smaller scale than Wi-Fi.

The 2010s marked a massive shift. Global internet access blew up thanks to more affordable DSL and Broadband connections. Later in the decade, new Fiber Optics development allowed for longer stretches of cable and faster options. Google further sparked development by creating Google Fiber, its own fiber internet connection in the US. While initial take-up was not the greatest, it did force other telecommunications companies to fast-track their own infrastructure development with larger investments.

The arrival of broadband and fiber changed our relationship with the internet. The internet has become more accessible and significantly cheaper. In the Philippines, household internet access ballooned to around 33 percent by 2013. It was also in the past decade that we saw the first fiber-to-broadband connection in the country, with PLDT Fiber allowing for direct Fiber to the Home. Globe Telecom quickly followed suit, and lately, Converge ICT. Fiber technology has allowed Filipino homes to finally obtain gigabit access to the internet.

However, the biggest contributor to the country’s internet access was 4G. By late 2011 and 2012, the two largest telcos would each open their own 4G networks. Around the same time, smartphones started flooding the country, with Chinese manufacturers setting a name for themselves. The combination quickly transformed the lives of Filipinos as this served as their introduction to the Internet.

By 2020, data from the Philippine Statistics Authority found that 56.1 percent of the country had access to the internet. 42.1 percent of that was from mobile broadband networks. Filipinos would top the Asia Pacific region in Internet usage, with a 2023 Statista report showing that Filipinos spend around 10 hours a day connected to the Internet. Likewise, the country is also one of the top social media users, with 60 percent of users visiting social media sites daily, based on a report by Meltwater and We Are Social.

Larger access to the internet was key to e-commerce acceptance. Thanks to the adoption of 4G and, more recently, 5G, e-commerce is booming. E-commerce platforms like Shopee and Lazada have become among the biggest-selling platforms in the country. Online live selling is also taking off, as millions tune in every day for the next big deal.

Finally, the biggest online shift might be the adoption of digital payments. Based on 2022 data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), 42.1 percent of retail payments were made through digital payments. In 2023, the figure grew to 52.8 percent. Year-on-year digital payment is growing, with the number expected to grow even higher in 2024.

If there’s one thing to take away from the recent innovations in the last 25 years, it would be connectivity. In just a few short years, connections through the internet have driven innovation and transformed entire social systems. It intertwines with the development of mobile devices, which have become our main computing companions. As AI takes a foothold in mobile devices in 2024, can we expect another paradigm shift in the coming years? Who knows? The only thing for sure is that we can’t wait for what’s next in the next 25 years.

Technology is rapidly transforming our world, offering unprecedented convenience and efficiency. As we become increasingly reliant on it, innovators are pushing boundaries and doing things that were once thought impossible, and that’s pretty amazing. One of the most common and rapidly progressing technologies is Artificial Intelligence (AI). We are all familiar with what AI can do in our lives. But in the future sense, its capabilities will be much more advanced, evolving at an exponential rate and reshaping industries as we know them. In a TIME Magazine article, Taiwanese businessman and computer scientist Kai-Fu Lee delves into the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance various aspects of human life. He explains that as the data within the AI system continuously improves, it will eventually reach a point where AI can know and understand things better than we do. In other words, AI can make more accurate predictions, provide deeper insights, and offer solutions that might surpass human intuition. It could even anticipate our needs, making decisions that align with our preferences and values, thus creating more potential to revolutionize how we interact with technology and making it an extension of our intelligence.

In the realm of work, Michael from Dataleon highlighted some significant possibilities for AI’s future by 2050, which is expected to generate new career paths. Leading to industries and roles focused on AI development, data science, and machine learning. Additionally, according to an article from AI Bees,

governments will even create laws to ensure the benefits of AI are shared fairly. However, to fully take advantage of the ongoing advancements of AI at work, people need to upgrade their skills because understanding how an AIdriven environment works is essential. This means educational systems will need to evolve, offering training in AI and related fields, and individuals will have to commit to lifelong learning to stay relevant in the job market because the integration of AI into various sectors is a promising future as it will revolutionize the way we live and work.

In mobility, recent technological advancements, including self-driving cars powered by AI and electric vehicles, are revolutionizing transportation. Alongside these developments is the concept of flying transportation, which is increasingly tangible. Alef, a pioneering company, is developing the first-ever flying car. This innovation is merging the convenience of automobiles with the efficiency and freedom of air travel. Plus, it has provided us with a glimpse into the future of transportation, which could reshape how we move through cities, such as alleviating traffic congestion, reducing travel times, and providing a versatile and sustainable solution for both urban and rural commuting.

Mind and Virtual Worlds

As AI technology advances, braincomputer interfaces (BCIs) are emerging as a significant development.

The Samsung Neo QLED TV (QN87D) is a premium television that offers stunning picture quality, immersive sound, and a sleek design. It is a top-of-the-line model packed with features that make it a great choice for movie lovers, gamers, and anyone who wants the best possible viewing experience. I had the opportunity to host the 55-incher in my bedroom for a couple of weeks, and here’s how it went.

DESIGN

The Samsung Neo QLED TV (QN87D) is a beautiful TV with a modern, minimalist design. It has a slim bezel that maximizes screen real estate, and the stand is sleek and unobtrusive. The 55-inch test unit is quite large and, while it requires only a few screws to set up, at least 2 pairs of hands are needed for handling and installation.

Featuring the vaunted NeoSlim Design, the Neo QLED TV has an ultra-slim profile and a near bezel-less design, so the screen commands full attention with no distractions from the frame. The build quality is excellent, and the TV feels very sturdy, with a solid base that ensures the unit won’t easily tip over in case of unforeseen knocks or bumps.

HARDWARE

The hardware of the Samsung Neo QLED TV (QN87D) is where it truly shines.

At the heart of the QN87D is Samsung’s Quantum Matrix Technology, which utilizes Mini LEDs to deliver precise control of the picture’s brightness and contrast. This technology results in accurate light control for the most lifelike, ultra-fine picture quality in all types of scenes.

The Neo QLED QN87D is powered by an NQ4 AI Gen2 Processor that optimizes both picture and sound through its 4K upscaling technology, thus delivering an excellent 4K experience. Its impressive 120Hz refresh rate further enhanced by Motion Xcelerator is another plus factor. Details are captured with incredible clarity while reducing motion blur and ensuring smooth transitions.

At the rear, you will find an array of ports, including HDMI 2.1, which supports higher resolutions and refresh rates, making it future-proof for upcoming consoles and devices. There are also multiple USB ports, an Ethernet port, and optical audio out, providing ample connectivity options for all your devices.

It also supports Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi-6 wireless connectivity.

Samsung has also paid attention to audio quality with the Dolby Atmos 2.2.2 top-channel speakers. Complemented by Object Tracking Sound (OTS), the multiple speakers around the screen create a realistic 3D sound experience.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Neo QLED TV (QN87D) is surprisingly easy to configure out-of-thebox as it runs on the intuitive and userfriendly Samsung Tizen operating system. Navigating through the menus and apps is smooth and responsive. It integrates into the Samsung SmartThings ecosystem, so you can actually control compatible home devices (in my case, my washer/dryer combo).

The Smart Hub offers easy access to my favorite streaming services—Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, etc.

The interface is well-organized so it’s easy to find binge-worthy movies and series.

I was in the middle of my House of the Dragon Season 2 binge, and the Neo QLED TV totally elevated the viewing experience for me. The large 55-inch screen, along with stunning visuals and surround sound quality delivered an immersive, cinematic experience. Even for dark scenes, the excellent contrast ensured that you don’t miss out on the details.

With regard to sound quality, the realistic effect of OTS as it moves with the action, and the dialogue enhancement from the

Active Voice Amplifier feature were also major plus points.

VALUE

When considering the value of the Samsung Neo QLED TV (QN87D), it’s important to take into account its cutting-edge technology, superior design, and excellent user experience. The nubia Music smartphone presents a playful and energetic vibe. With its audio-centric focus and the brand’s “Better Music For All” slogan, what does this entry-level smartphone offer in terms of functionality for everyday tasks?

DESIGN

Opening the nubia Music is like stepping into a world of color. The smartphone’s pop-art-inspired back design is a splash of fun and creativity, with bright and bold colors, making it visually striking and intriguing. Inspired by vintage vinyl record players, the single speaker beside the main camera elicits a nostalgic vibe. The only downside is that the speaker can be partially covered when the phone is laid down on its back, which could slightly muffle the sound.

It feels light in the hand, with just enough weight to remind you it’s there. Size-wise, it’s comfortably easy to hold, fitting snugly in your hand.

Moving on to its screen display, the nubia Music features a 6.6-inch HD large screen. The front camera is positioned at the top center; you’ll find the dual audio jacks just above it. You’ll find the volume and power buttons on the phone’s right side, while the USB Type-C charging port is at the bottom. The left side houses the micro-SD card slot and the micro-SIM card tray.

HARDWARE

Performance-wise, benchmark results on Geekbench 6 were a bit underwhelming. Its single-core score of 198 and multicore score of 834 indicate performance levels that fall short of expectations. The nubia Music runs on Android 13, which is known for its smooth and efficient user experience. However, it is powered by an ARM Unisoc (formerly Spreadtrum) processor, which could be the culprit behind the lackluster performance.

Supporting its audio-centric focus, the nubia Music features a DTS:X Ultra speaker with 600% higher volume, making it perfect for anyone who prioritizes sound quality over raw processing power. In addition to its audio capabilities, this smartphone comes with a 50MP HD dual main camera. The megapixel count for the front camera is not specified.

On the memory front, nubia Music provides a 128GB large storage capacity and 4GB of dynamic RAM that can be extended with an additional 4GB to provide ample space for other applications

and media. It has a large 5000mAh battery that can last the whole day.

USER EXPERIENCE

Unboxing the nubia Music, I was eager to explore its features, especially the audio-centric ones. However, one thing immediately caught my attention—no earphones were included. Considering this smartphone is marketed with a focus on audio, the absence of earphones is a surprising oversight. On the flip side, the unique placement of the speaker, diverging from the typical bottom or top positions found in most smartphones, instantly stood out. This design choice enhances the smartphone’s musical aesthetic and complements its pop-artinspired back design.

Its audio performance is indeed a highlight, but not without some quirks. The sound is undeniably powerful at its maximum volume of 600%, yet it comes with a caveat. The treble frequencies tend to overshadow the bass, leading to an unbalanced sound that can detract from the overall listening experience. The audio can become sharp or tinny at higher volumes, lacking the depth and richness many users might expect. While the volume boost is impressive, this

imbalance might leave audiophiles or bass enthusiasts craving a more rounded sound profile. The performance is adequate for casual listeners or those using lower volumes but may not satisfy those with more discerning tastes.

On the plus side, the built-in FM antenna adds a nice touch, letting you tune into your favorite radio stations without needing extra accessories. Also, the DTS:X logo in the center of the speaker lights up in various colors that pulse with the beat of the music, creating a dynamic and party-like atmosphere. This visual effect enhances the auditory experience and adds a fun and immersive element to listening to music.

On a positive note, the smartphone includes dual 3.5mm headphone jacks

(but sans earphones), allowing you and a friend to enjoy the same audio track or video without needing additional equipment. This thoughtful feature makes sharing media a breeze and adds to the device’s appeal. However, as much as I appreciate the sound quality and the device’s aesthetics, these features overshadow some of its other functional aspects.

For everyday performance, nubia Music handles basic tasks like web browsing, checking emails, and streaming content with ease. It’s also capable of running light games that don’t require much processing power. However, for more demanding activities, such as video editing or playing graphically intense games, the smartphone struggles to keep pace. The processor can lag during gameplay and, at times, the system may freeze entirely, leaving you unable to return to the home screen without a reboot. This indicates that the hardware is more suited to users with basic needs rather than those seeking a device for heavy workloads or serious gaming.

That said, the smartphone is comfortable to use. Whether I’m watching videos or

playing games, the speaker placement is well thought out, and the phone feels great in hand, making for an enjoyable experience without any awkwardness.

The main dual-camera setup is decent for an entry-level smartphone. While it doesn’t deliver the ultra-crisp, high-definition images you’d expect from more expensive models, it performs well enough in good lighting, capturing subjects with reasonable clarity and detail. However, in low light or when attempting to capture fine details, the camera struggles. It’s unsuitable for more demanding photography needs but is more than adequate for casual shots.

This device was not made for video recording, particularly if you’re considering social media content creation. Video quality comes out grainy, and the 30fps frame rate in FHD 1080p mode lacks smoothness. The absence of a stabilization feature means videos are often shaky, making it challenging to capture smooth footage. The front camera also leaves something to be desired. It frequently produces grainy images with a noticeable lack of vibrant colors, resulting in selfies and video calls that appear dull and less sharp. While the front camera is fine for basic needs, it won’t impress those who prioritize high-quality selfies or crisp, colorful video calls.

With 128GB of internal storage, 4GB of RAM, and an additional 4GB of extended RAM, the smartphone strikes a decent balance between space and performance. However, in my experience, particularly when using resource-intensive apps and capturing lots of photos and videos, I found the 128GB storage capacity somewhat limiting. I often had to manage my files to

avoid running out of space. Additionally, while the 4GB RAM handles basic multitasking fairly well, the extra 4GB extended RAM doesn’t fully compensate for the limitations, especially when running multiple heavy applications simultaneously. This can occasionally lead to sluggish performance, making it less than ideal for users who demand high performance and ample storage.

The display on the nubia Music is another mixed bag. The 6.6-inch HD screen is large enough to comfortably watch movies or series, but the resolution tops out at 720p. This means it doesn’t offer the sharp, high-definition quality found on many other smartphones. It’s adequate for casual viewing, but if you’re looking for a screen with more detail and clarity, this might not be the best option.

VALUE

The nubia Music is priced at PHP3,999, which seems fair given its features and performance. While it has its limitations, this smartphone handles the basics well enough. It is ideal for those looking for a budget-friendly device that covers everyday tasks—like browsing, streaming, and casual gaming. However, if your smartphone is your office, your entertainment center, and your assistant all rolled into one, this might not keep up with your pace.

FEW AUTOMOTIVE technologies are poised to improve the landscape of mobility as electrification. SAFETY FOR EVERYONE

One of the highlight features on all the variants of the All-new CR-V, including the hybrid RS e:HEV, is Honda SENSING technology.

Honda SENSING is actually a suite of functions that work together towards Honda’s global safety concept of “safety for everyone,” and a collision-free society where all road users can get to their destinations safely, and without incident.

The Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) is one of the more impressive features within Honda’s SENSING technology. CMBS takes information from the camera and radar to detect possible collisions. Should one be detected, the system will issue a visual and audible warning. If a collision remains imminent, the vehicle assists the driver by applying the brakes appropriately. This feature not only warns the driver, but actively works to prevent or minimize impact.

Next up, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow (LSF) uses a combination of a front-facing camera and radar to perceive the vehicle in front, as well as your distance to it. Unlike traditional cruise control that simply maintains a given speed, this system accelerates and brakes to keep the same distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead, greatly reducing fatigue on long stretches of fastermoving traffic.

Low-Speed Follow on the other hand is active in stop-and-go traffic, assisting the driver by taking on some of the processing load that happens in slow-moving traffic like what one would normally encounter in the city.

The Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) helps the vehicle maintain its position in the middle of the lane when on the highway. Using the information from the frontfacing camera, the system detects when the vehicle moves outside of the optimal position in the middle of the lane, alerts the driver, and gently assists in bringing the vehicle back into the center of the lane.

Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) work hand-in-hand by taking note of lane boundaries, and give the driver visual and tactile warnings to alert them that they are approaching the edge of the lane, or are about to cross into the unpaved section of the road.

The system also gently corrects the steering in order to direct the vehicle back into the proper lane position.

Auto High Beam optimizes visibility by activating the high beams when the system detects that there are no oncoming vehicles, and lowers deactivates the high beams appropriately to avoid dazzling other road users. The RS e:HEV variant of the CR-V also has the Adaptive Driving Beam: an intelligent LED lighting system that delivers excellent visibility without blinding the vehicles in front.

Finally, Lead Car Departure Notification alerts the driver once the car in front of them has started to move from a standstill.

THE FUTURE OF AUTOMOTIVE CONNECTIVITY

Honda CONNECT takes in-car connected services to new heights, offering features that set the All-New CR-V apart from the rest in its class. Honda CONNECT works in conjunction with the user’s phone through a connected app to add safety, security, and convenience to the driving experience.

Safety features included in the Honda CONNECT suite include Automatic Collision Detection that autonomously detects when a collision occurs, and immediately calls for help for a timely response to the emergency.

Security Alarm Detection sends an alert to the user’s smartphone should the vehicle’s alarm be triggered, and Speed Alert sends notifications to the user’s phone when the vehicle reaches certain speeds.

Honda CONNECT also delivers new security features. Find My Car pins your vehicle’s location on a map on your smartphone so you can avoid losing your car in a large parking lot, or new neighborhood. Geofencing sends an alert should the vehicle stray outside a set area, and Emergency Calls gives the user fast access to emergency contacts within the Honda CONNECT app.

Finally, Honda CONNECT gives features that make owning any variant of the All-New CR-V much more convenient. Car Status doubles as both a system to keep the user informed of any concerns that need to be addressed, and provides diagnostic support when needed. Remote Vehicle

Controls gives the app the ability to start or stop the vehicle remotely, access to climate control, remote lock control, and remote access to the lights. This system also gives service reminders, and can even assist with booking an appointment with an official Honda service center. You even get access to social networking sites to share your drives with your friends and followers, and get Honda-specific news and alerts. If there is a car brand that has seen one of the biggest evolutions in the last couple of years, it would be Hyundai. The Korean giant has gained a lot of traction with their new models that blend unique looks with tons of modern features.

Vermosa furthers its mission to support Philippine Sports

An Athlete’s House, envisioned to enhance the training of elite national athletes honing their skills for national and international competitions, is now open at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub inside the Vermosa Estate in Imus, Cavite.

The 30-room athletes’ accommodation—built on the spacious Sports Hub grounds of the 752-hectare Ayala Land estate—was officially inaugurated on July 10, 2024, with the groundbreaking of the Athletics Center Dugout immediately after.

The Athlete’s House is very accessible to the different sports facilities in the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub, which includes a FINA-standard Olympic-size swimming pool with a warm-up pool, an IAAF-certified 400-meter track oval, a multisport open field, an indoor fitness facility equipped with a sports science laboratory, and one of three football pitches in the country with valid FIFA certification.

Designed with the Filipino athlete in mind, room configurations are built to suit a team seeking a

comfortable and convenient home base for training or a family looking for an active getaway. The bathrooms have a three-way feature to enable three persons to simultaneously use the shower, toilet, and vanity area. There are other features, such as a marketplace as well as an open bar and lounge, that guests will enjoy. The best part is that the training facilities and gym are just a few meters away.

Meanwhile, the Athletics’ Center Dugout is the only missing piece to the FIFA Certified football field that will turn the AVSH grounds into a busy competition venue for both professional and amateur leagues. It is projected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025. The facility features locker rooms for playing teams, a dedicated room for officials and referees, a room for media partners, and an open deck for VIP guests with panoramic views of the field and track. AVSH also improves the spectator experience by investing in expansive canopies to better protect spectators from the weather.

The professionally managed Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub has long been intended to be the premier training ground for amateur and professional athletes and the preferred venue for national and international sports events in the Philippines.

Among the athletes supported by Ayala Corporation are two-time Olympic swimmer Jasmine Alkhaldi; gold-medal archer Andrea Robles; youngest nationally ranked karateka Prince Alejo; world-ranked archer and SEAG medalist Pia Bidaure; world-ranked archer Abby Bidaure; Philippines’ top foil fencer Nat Perez; world-ranked fencer Noel Jose; and Filipino Olympian pole vaulter EJ Obiena, currently ranked second in the world.

Recently, Vermosa also opened its facilities to the young athletes of Takbo Kabitenyo, a non-profit organization for young runners from Cavite who aspire to become national athletes one day.

The Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub (AVSH) is the regular training ground of National Sports Associations such as the Triathlon Association of the Philippines, the Philippine Rugby Football Union, and the Philippine Athletic and Track and Field Association.

MOVE IT strengthens its strategic partnerships with the HONDA Safety Driving Center and the Philippine Red Cross as part of its ongoing commitment to safety.

The renewed partnerships with the two organizations intensify MOVE IT’s skills assessment, capacity-building, and emergency response programs. “Safety remains a cornerstone of our operations. We are committed to constantly enhancing and advancing our programs, aiming to cultivate a fleet of rider-partners who are not only equipped with essential safety skills but also foster a safety-first mindset,” shares MOVE IT general manager Wayne Jacinto.

“By forging strategic collaborations with esteemed organizations in road safety and emergency response, we continuously evolve our training and assessment program blueprint, aligning with globally recognized certification and training standards,” adds Jacinto.

MOVE IT further strengthened its partnership with HONDA for a training series dedicated to its team of trainers, assessors, and safety program designers. This collaboration has continued to thrive since its inception in 2022.

This initiative saw the MOVE IT team participating in an intensive training program spread across three core courses to achieve certification as road safety instructors and assessors:

• Motorcycle Skills Certification (Intermediate to Advanced Courses). A certification program focused on assessment of road safety awareness and professional driving skills.

• Safety Riding Course. A training course focused on enriching the instructors’ road safety mindset and knowledge on how to become a responsible road user.

• Basic Motorcycle Troubleshooting. A training course on how to ascertain the roadworthiness of a vehicle.

Maintaining Global Standards for Local Moto-Taxi. MOVE IT partners at the HONDA Safety Driving Center to train and certify its team of safety trainers and assessors.

After completing the certification program, MOVE IT trainers and assessors are empowered to implement MOVE IT’s mandatory skills and vehicle assessment program for prospective rider-partners.

The same team vets aspiring riderpartners who will move on to the next phase of the MOVE IT onboarding process, which is the mandatory Driver Guidelines Orientation and Training. This program — designed after principles and guidelines set by the HONDA Road Safety team — strongly emphasizes road safety and rider conduct, ensuring MOVE IT’s full compliance with established government standards.

On top of the certification program, the MOVE IT assessment and upskilling team also participates in courses on analytical driving, motorcycle dynamics, and practical application of topics like motorcycle handling, corrective riding posture, and traffic rules and regulations.

MOVE IT has also co-developed road safety courses with the HONDA Safety Driving Center, which are integrated into its orientation process and accessible to every rider via the in-app learning platform MOVE IT Academy.

Boosting MOVE IT’s Emergency Response Unit with the Philippine Red Cross

In a move towards enhancing safety and response measures, MOVE IT fortified its partnership with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) for an advanced training program designed specifically for its Emergency Response Unit (ERU). The ERU is composed of volunteer rider leaders and a dedicated contingent from the MOVE IT team.

This initiative seeks to set new standards in emergency response and assistance in the motorcycle taxi industry. The training program encompasses a wide range of topics crucial for emergency preparedness

and response, including Emergency Action Principle, Basic First Aid, Environmental Emergencies, and Special Situations.

Following the completion of workshop sessions with the PRC, the MOVE IT ERU members undergo further evaluation before being officially deployed as emergency responders.

The ERU responds to road incidents reported through the platform via the MOVE IT Hotline, the in-app Safety Center, or the Emergency SOS Button. They conduct a quick assessment of the situation, provide

comprehensive on-site support, and facilitate communication with riders, passengers, and their families.

Lastly, the ERU administers basic first aid when required while remaining to defer to professional medics for fullfledged medical attention and action.

“We are thankful for collaborations with organizations such as HONDA Safety Driving Center and the Philippine Red Cross, for these deepen our industrial knowledge – allowing us to better our service to every passenger and heighten our commitment to safety,” notes Jacinto.

NLEX EMPOWERS YOUNG WOMEN THROUGH BRAVE PROGRAM

NLEX Corporation recently launched another woman-centered community development program called Barangay Responders and Advocates of Violencefree Environment (BRAVE). This program empowers young women to play a more active role in their community by training them to become disaster and emergency responders for their respective barangays.

“Ang mga kababaihan ay may unique qualities na angkop para sa tungkulin bilang community responders – sila ay highly adaptable, sensitive, at compassionate. Ito ang mga dahilan kung bakit namin binuo ang isang programang magbibigay oportunidad sa mga kabataang babae na manguna o makatulong sa kanilang barangay sa pag-manage ng sitwasyon sa tuwing may disaster or emergency,” said NLEX Corporation president and general manager J. Luigi L. Bautista.

Twenty-five participants from select NLEX Connector host communities underwent a three-day training camp in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Management (BDRRM), emergency first aid, and self-affirmation exercises was conducted.

Jiu-jitsu World Champion Meggie Ochoa also taught the participants basic jiu-jitsu and self-defense techniques. She also shared an empowering message to the ladies, reminding them that despite the natural difference in physical strength between men and women, women can protect themselves and others using the right physical skills and knowledge. They can also be effective advocates of a violence-free environment. Ochoa said, “Programs like this will help them to be more equipped and ready to respond and act in emergencies.”

All these activities aim to prepare young women to be physically, mentally, and emotionally fit for their new role as emergency responders. They were equipped with new knowledge and skills and taught the importance of preparedness, resiliency, and standing up against violence.

“Sobrang importante po ang adbokasiya ng NLEX na hubugin ang kakayahan ng mga kabataang babae upang magamit sa pagtulong sa aming komunidad tuwing sakuna at sa tuluyang pagtigil

ng kahit anong uri ng violence sa aming komunidad,” Shenna Orbe, a participant from Brgy. 204, said.

MAPUA UNIVERSITY EARNS TECHNICAL INNOVATION AWARD AT THE SHELL ECO-MARATHON

Mapua University demonstrated exceptional performance in the recently-consluded Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and the Middle East 2024, earning them the prestigious Technical Innovation Award. This accolade recognizes the team’s ability to integrate advanced technologies into their vehicle design, illustrating their high level of technical proficiency and creative ingenuity.

Seven Filipino student teams showcased their Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) skills in the competition held recently at the Mandalika International Circuit, Lombok, Indonesia. The Philippine teams included:

• Mapua University - Cardinal One

• Polytechnic University of the Philippines - Hygears

Five teams successfully passed the rigorous Technical Inspection and ran their vehicles on the track. Unfortunately, the teams from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and Xavier University were unable to advance to the final stages.

The Prototype category saw remarkable achievements from various teams. Students participating in this category focused on designing ultra-efficient, lightweight vehicles, typically with three wheels, to optimize the efficiency of innovative energy sources. The energy sources included battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, or internal combustion engine (gasoline, ethanol, and/or diesel).

In addition to on-track performance, off-track awards recognized teams for their skills and achievements outside of their track performance. Categories included safety, carbon footprint reduction, and the Spirit of Shell Ecomarathon award, celebrating students

who use their skills to contribute to the greater good of others.

Norman Koch, global general manager of Shell Eco-marathon, commended the participants, stating, “It is truly impressive to see the high standards of performance and innovative ideas generated by these young thinkers, the changemakers of tomorrow. Despite facing various challenges throughout the competition, they remained resilient and achieved remarkable results in designing energy-efficient vehicles.”

The Shell Eco-marathon AsiaPacific and the Middle East 2024 was a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of students from across the region. It pushed the boundaries of what is technically possible in the realm of energy efficiency. The event will be hosted in Doha, Qatar, next year.
