VR and AR art encompass a wide spectrum of possibilities. Many consider VR art akin to traditional art forms— drawings or paintings existing in a three-dimensional VR space. Others view VR art as a fusion of different mediums, resulting in entirely new artistic creations.
AR art, on the other hand, is often seen as a complement to existing works. As a platform that merges the real and virtual, AR has frequently served as a catalyst for artistic pieces. Through a simple phone scan, a physical artwork can transform virtually, existing in two realities simultaneously.
Artists have embraced these new mediums to express their creativity. VR artists have blended drawing and animation to craft vast, immersive pieces that place the viewer in the heart of the action. The technology has also empowered emerging artists to push the boundaries of VR and explore art beyond the confines of three-dimensional space.
AR art, meanwhile, offers the ability to transcend the real and virtual, resulting in something entirely novel. With a wave of a hand or a device scan, artists can alter the nature of their creations. What was once solid can become ethereal, and the ethereal can become tangible.
Forging the Metaverse
VR and AR art surged into the spotlight a few years ago, coinciding with the rise of blockchain technology, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and the concept of the metaverse. While AR and VR art predated these developments, blockchain technology significantly altered the landscape.
Blockchain technology transcended the digital realm and rapidly found its way into the art world. Artists can leverage the secure network of a blockchain to verify the authenticity of art purchased in the real world by attaching blockchain tokens to the artwork. These tokens, due to the decentralized nature of the blockchain, can track the ownership history of the artwork.
The cryptocurrency boom in the late 2010s also impacted the art world, with new crypto billionaires investing their wealth in real-world assets, including shares in or outright ownership of classical art pieces. Traditional art auctions began accepting cryptocurrency payments, and some even established exclusive blockchains for art transactions. London’s Christie’s auction house, for instance, partnered with Artory to record and secure data about artworks and collectibles on the blockchain.
Beyond real-world art, blockchain tokens led to the emergence of digital art trading. Like traditional art, digital artworks were assigned unique tokens. These tokens, each with its own cryptographic code, became known as non-fungible tokens, or NFTs.
As NFTs gained popularity, artists found new avenues for minting and selling their art on the blockchain. VR and AR artists were among them, their works becoming increasingly sought-after due to the concept of the “metaverse” and Web 3.0, a decentralized internet that envisioned leveraging VR and AR technologies.
While the metaverse remains a distant dream, VR and AR art continue to flourish. Although not as robust as they once were, NFTs continue to reshape the art world and the way art is created and traded.

Museums and galleries have also harnessed AR and VR to create entirely new immersive experiences based on classic works. The Musée d’Orsay in Paris, for example, has organized exhibits using VR headsets to offer visitors immersive journeys into the art of Van Gogh, Monet, and other masters.
Beyond physical museums, VR and AR are being explored for art and cultural preservation. In 2022, UNESCO and Interpol announced plans to create a virtual museum dedicated to stolen art and cultural objects. The museum aims to raise awareness of the illicit art trade and potentially facilitate the recovery of stolen
pieces. Renders for the virtual museum were unveiled in 2023, and it is expected to launch in 2025, featuring stolen works from Interpol’s list.
In Ukraine, VR technology has been used to create the Museum of Stolen Art, an online space documenting art lost or stolen during the ongoing conflict. It serves as a poignant reminder of the cultural toll of war and the importance of digital platforms for preserving a nation’s heritage.
VR and AR have not only opened up new artistic canvases for artists but have also empowered those whose visions were once constrained by the limitations of the physical world. These mediums are not merely tools for artistic expression but are extensions of our culture, testaments to humanity’s ever-evolving technology, and reflections of our enduring desire to express ourselves in new and innovative ways.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly inevitable force in creative art. Some artists are embracing AI as a collaborator, using it to evolve their artistic process. As technology advances, these artists are finding new ways to incorporate AI into their work, resulting in more innovative and unique expressions.
For example, Sougwen Chung, an internationally renowned artist and former MIT Media Lab researcher, collaborates with AI-driven machines to create art. Her work delves into the boundaries of human-machine collaboration. During her TED Talk, Chung shared how her robots seamlessly integrate with her artistic process.
Chung’s project series, Drawing Operations, features her collaboration with a robotic invention named “Drawing Operation Unit Generation” (D.O.U.G_1-2-3). This machine is designed to mimic her gestures in realtime. However, as a new creation, its results initially diverged from Chung’s movements. This discrepancy, however, led to an unexpected artistic discovery. D.O.U.G. further develops and operates using a visual algorithm trained on scanned images of her previous works. This technique, called “optical flow,” allows the robot to learn and process movement by tracking how objects move across a series of images. Chung understands that for D.O.U.G to function effectively, it needs to observe and learn to blend with her movements.
Her later robotic models, D.O.U.G. 4 and 5, are considerably more advanced. They integrate data from EEG (electroencephalogram) readings and alpha brain waves to better understand and mimic Chung’s movements. This
fosters a more seamless and intuitive interaction between artist and machine, further enhancing the creative process. Her sixth robotic D.O.U.G. model named Genesis, is a collection of shapes created through a custom-made Bespoke VR process. The movement data it records from her are used to generate innovative spatial information. Each artwork Chung creates with D.O.U.G. exemplifies her belief that AI systems can inspire creativity through learning. As she argues, the meaning lies not just in the data itself, but in the human interpretation it evokes.
Refik Anadol is another innovative media artist who utilizes AI in his work. Anadol explores the potential of post-digital architecture through immersive environments in his projects and exhibitions. Some notable examples include Machine Hallucinations: Sphere, Museum of Modern Art - Unsupervised, J’Adore - AI Data Sculpture, and the recent Large Nature Model
Anadol employs open-source software to manage large datasets and utilizes a machine learning model called a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). This model can create realistic
images by learning from existing data sets. Anadol views AI as a “collective memory” that gathers and preserves human knowledge and experiences. This creates a dynamic and accessible source of information for learning, decision-making, and innovation. Much of his work showcases how AI can enhance creativity, making the artistic process more intuitive and interactive. Through his generative computer art, Refik Anadol demonstrates that data is not just raw information; it’s a resource that AI can leverage to expand human imagination.

It’s important to distinguish between AIgenerated art and AI as a collaborative tool in artistic creation. AI-generated
art involves the AI creating the artwork independently, which raises questions about artistic authorship. For instance, the OpenArt AI website allows users to input concepts or ideas, and the AI generates artwork based on that input. In contrast, using AI as a companion in art creation refers to employing AI tools and assistants to support the artistic process, as exemplified by Sougwen Chung’s D.O.U.G. projects and Refik Anadol’s GEN AI model.

LENOVO LOQ 15
Lenovo’s Legion series has come a long way since its release a few years back. Thanks to its price, performance, and aesthetics, it has solidified its place among gamers. Aside from the Legion line, Lenovo’s IdeaPad Gaming 3 series was a hit in the budget gaming laptop range, gaining fans along the way. For 2024, Lenovo is shaking up the gaming scene by releasing the Lenovo LOQ 15 (15IAX9I), a new device that combines the Legion’s gaming prowess with the IdeaPad Gaming’s value for money.
DESIGN
The Lenovo LOQ 15 (15IAX9I) is the brand’s newest budget gaming laptop. Our review unit came with a 15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS display, which goes up to 300nits of brightness and has a fast 144Hz refresh rate.
The Lenovo LOQ 15 is essentially the successor of the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3-series. But unlike the Ideapad Gaming, the LOQ has a more gaming aesthetic similar to the Lenovo Legion when opened.
When the laptop is closed, it has a more toned-down look, letting you bring it to meetings with no one batting an eye.
As earlier stated, when you open the laptop, you’ll be greeted by the full-sized keyboard. According to Lenovo, it has a nice 1.5mm key travel (more about this later). Unlike the Legion line, the LOQ 15 only has a white-LED backlight — I’m sorry RGB lovers.
In terms of ports, the Lenovo LOQ 15 is generous. At the rear, it has power input, two USB-A ports, a full-size HDMI, and an RJ45 ethernet port. Meanwhile, on the right side, you’ll find a USB-A port, a USB-C port that supports PD 140W and DP 1.4, the headphone/mic combo 3.5mm port, and the electronic webcam shutter.
The Lenovo LOQ 15 is a bit hefty, coming in at a whopping 2.38kg. The heft comes from its build. While the body may be mostly plastic, Lenovo points out that the laptop meets MIL-STD-810H standards. This means it has undergone militarygrade testing and is durable enough against drops and spills.
HARDWARE
The Lenovo LOQ 15 is powered by an Intel Core i5-12450HX processor paired with an Intel Arc A530M dedicated GPU. Our unit also had 8GB of DDR5 memory and 500GB of SSD.
In benchmarks, the Lenovo LOQ 15 performed well. It scored 2126 (single core)
and 7323 (multi-core) on Geekbench. 1583 (single core) and 9570 (multi-core) for Cinebench R23. While the Intel CPU and GPU combined for 5490 for 3D Mark’s Time Spy v1.2.
In terms of gaming performance, the Lenovo LOQ is a good 1080p gaming machine. For lighter games like Dota 2, it was able to run at the highest settings with 40 to 90+fps, depending on the scenario. In Valorant, it was able to reach 130 to 140+fps.
For heavier games like CyberPunk 2044, utilizing the Intel Xe Super Sampling default settings, I achieved an astonishing 30-45fps in-game with minimal activities. Unfortunately, I was unable to fully test out the device on CyberPunk 2044 because, for some reason, the in-game benchmark was unable to run.
In terms of battery, our Lenovo LOQ has a 60Wh battery and comes with a 170W power brick.
USER EXPERIENCE
The display is good at best. Colors are not as vivid as something you’ll find with a more expensive Legion laptop. But for the price, it’s good enough. You can enjoy watching movies and streams on the device.
The speakers are surprisingly great. Loud enough to fill a mid-size room. There’s
minimal distortion at max volume, though the bass is a bit lacking. That said, the speakers are pretty good for the price
One of the things that I love about the Lenovo LOQ 15 is the keyboard. Lenovo has equipped the LOQ 15 with a full-sized keyboard complete with the numpad. The best thing about the keyboard is the 1.5mm key travel. It feels similar to a mechanical keyboard with its satisfying response. Thanks to its amazing keyboard,
I flushed out quite a number of stories during my time with the laptop.
The battery lasted me just under three hours from 100 to 15% and that’s just with regular work use with the display at 50% brightness. The Lenovo vantage widget also does not help when you see the value of the battery rapidly going down as you work, though thankfully, you can turn it off. Fortunately, charging is relatively quick, getting you back up in under an hour.

Gaming phones are built to be great performance devices. Unfortunately, they also usually come at great cost. So when nubia released the ZTE nubia Neo 2 5G, it immediately caught our attention, mainly because of its affordable price point. So, what’s the catch? Let’s find out.
DESIGN
The nubia Neo 2 5G comes in three colors: Sunfire Yellow, Frost Silver, and Storm Gray. It features the Bionic Mecha design, which has a robotic/ futuristic gaming aesthetic and forms a “face” at the back. nubia calls this “Hero eye” texture and was made to highlight the design. Depending on personal preferences, the design is a bit “loud” and can be a hit or miss.
The nubia Neo 2 has a 6.72-inch FHD+ (2400 x 1080) 120Hz IPS display. It’s one of the bigger displays — good for gaming, as more space means more maneuverability.
You’ll find the dual-sim tray and volume buttons on the left of the device. On the right are a power button that doubles as a side-mounted fingerprint reader and two shoulder triggers (more on this later). On top is a mic hole, while beneath the
phone are the speaker, a USB Type-C port, and another mic hole. At the back are the main cameras. In front is the selfie camera and the earpiece that also functions as the secondary speaker.
HARDWARE
The nubia Neo 2 5G is powered by a Unisoc T820 octa-core processor mated to 8GB of RAM (expandable to 20 via
memory fusion) and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. All of these combine for a solid spec sheet.
In terms of performance, the Unisoc processor was a surprise. While it won’t break performance records with its 529759 Antutu score, it’s more than good enough for its price. Here are some other benchmark results in case you’re curious: Geekbench 6889 (single core), 2295 (multi-core), PCMark 12757, 3Dmark Wildlife 2005 with 12.01 average fps.
For gaming, it easily handles esports titles like League of Legends: Wild Rift at the
highest resolution. For heavier games like Genshin Impact, it can run smoothly at low graphic settings. You can try high graphics, and it will still run at 30fps but with noticeable frame drops.
Its cameras consist of a 50-megapixel main shooter paired with a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The camera is able to capture decent images in excellent lighting conditions. Low light can sometimes be usable but you’ll definitely want multiple shots to find something you’ll really like. For video, it can record 1080p at 30fps, standard for most phones. The front 16-megapixel selfie camera also records 1080p videos.
One of the biggest highlights of the nubia Neo 2 5G is its massive 6000mAh battery. In benchmarks, the nubia Neo 2 lasted 13 hours and 42 mins in PCMark’s battery test from 80% to 20%. In the real world, the battery easily lasts a day of gaming. Once it drops to red, it can be topped up
in just over an hour with the fast 33W fast charging.
USER EXPERIENCE
Here at Gadgets Magazine, we’ve seen our fair share of gaming smartphones. From the flagships to the flagship killers, and even some “gaming” devices that tiptoe the line from performance to just aesthetics. Among them, the nubia Neo 2 5G deserves a unique spot.
First of all, the device has some pretty unique features. nubia has finally brought the shoulder triggers to a sub-10K pesos phone. Shoulder triggers (be it buttons or not) do make gaming a bit easier, especially in MOBAs.
Additionally, the nubia Neo 2 5G also features Game Space 2.0, a dedicated gaming mode that allows users to change
performance settings. Game Space was previously only available in the more expensive RedMagic lineup. There are other gaming settings that you can access in-game space, like shoulder triggers, anti-accidental touch, charge bypass, and many more.
Beyond gaming, the nubia Neo 2 5G is also a great media consumption device. The display is good and the 120Hz is actually great compared to others in its segment. The stereo speakers also get pretty loud, though lows can be lacking at times. The speakers also have DTS:X Ultra which gives them more immersive spatial audio, especially for games.
If there’s one major drawback it would be the thermals. The phone does get hot especially when running heavier games. It’s not hot enough to cause issues, but it does get your palms sweatier than usual.
Another thing to note is that the phone is also on the heavier and bulkier side. The whole body is massive with a large display, and the large battery does make it a bit heavier than most devices. For those who don’t mind the bulk and want performance, this phone can be a good option.
VALUE
The price of the nubia Neo 2 5G starts at just PHP9,999. With gaming-centric features like the shoulder triggers, and good gaming software in the form of
Game Space, the nubia Neo 2 5G standout. The addition of an FHD+ display and the dual stereo speakers make this phone a worthy consideration for gamers.

Each station has its alternative representation of corporate/life words that they want to escape from and to successfully finish, participants must fully unlock the motorcycle’s full potential. They got to experience the PG-1 rough terrain in Station 1, test out the durability of the block-patterned tire by doing a burnout in Station 2, skillfully stream through the river in Station 3, ride into long lines in Station 4,
overcome the deadlines in Station 5, riding through the night in Station 6, and ending the activity with a meeting where they shared their PG-1 explorations throughout the day in Station 7. This content competition proves the PG1’s outdoor performance that fills every explorer’s longing to achieve a great outdoor adventure.
Hosted by Drew Arellano, the evening program was livestreamed on Yamaha’s FB Page, immersing the online audience to vote on which group got the best content exploration. Yamaha also announced the upcoming PG-1 Filmfest and the selected filmmakers who will compete to win the Best Film. This competition will revolve around making their creative expression anchoring from the “PG1’s Leave it all behind” concept.
PART 2: Exploration extends to Bridgetown!
The Explorers Camp continues on Day 2 as Yamaha extends the campsite in the urban setting. Located in
Bridgetown Pasig, the exploration is open to the public and invites all Yamaha Club riders and potential customers to try the Flat Track Test Ride experience and be a PG-1 explorer for a day. Side activities such as Henna Tattoo, Wood carving, and Maze Challenge were also installed to encourage everyone to take a ride in the activation.

Words by Jose AlvarezThe science of what makes a good racing game has evolved over the years—from simple games to full-blown setups that resemble an actual race car, it has been challenging to get real-life driving to translate to a video game. Whether you use a simple controller or go out of your way to make an entire race car setup, there are plenty of racing games available on the market. While one might think this is another yearly EA Sports release slash cash grab, does this installation of F1 hold up to previous iterations?
Codemasters has had a lengthy history of developing racing games, namely the Micro Machines series in the 1990s and going on to create the Colin McRae Rally and Dirt series (the late Colin McRae himself also served as a technical director for the series) as well as previous iterations of the F1 series. For F1 24, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and Lando Norris appear on the cover. If you’re willing to open your wallet up for the Champions Edition of the game, you’ll be treated to Formula 1 legend Max Verstappen on the cover.

Honestly, I had little familiarity with Formula 1, so this would also serve as my leap into the digital unknown when it comes to gaming reviews. I had no idea where to start. Do I build up my career as a driver? Do I manage an entire Formula 1 team? Do I test my mediocre racing chops against a slew of online opponents? I went and tried all three despite my woefully pedestrian skill in racing games in general. Could I make it to the level of Formula 1 legends like Michael Schumacher? Could I manage a team that could go up against Ferrari or Red Bull? Could I beat someone who most likely blew thousands of dollars on a full-blown racing setup with only a USD30 controller? These were all questions I kept in mind as I played this game.
You can take the wheel in Driver Career mode as yourself or as an established Formula 1 driver. You can set goals for yourself and your performance relative to others on the team, but you’ll have to fight tooth and nail for a contract if you don’t do well. One of my favorite features of this mode is being approached by rival teams in “secret meetings” where you can hear their proposals. You can use this leverage to also negotiate terms for next season or even walk away from your own contract. You also have the opportunity to upgrade your own car parts and take part in test sessions during practices, allowing you to learn the tracks as you play the game. One of my favorite tracks was the Las Vegas circuit, given that I live a stone’s throw away from the circuit itself. Another one of my favorite tracks is the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar.
When I got to actually driving in F1 24, the car graphics didn’t seem like a game that was made in 2024. The actual driving experience made me really stop and think about Codemasters’ attention to detail and realism, since they have had great success with racing games. In F1 24, it takes a lot of effort (the wrong kind, of course) to crash in the rain. Handling—a stat that is extremely valuable in racing games—seems to exist only if you have an actual wheel and pedals, and doesn’t translate well to your average gaming controller. Thankfully for games made in 2024, these issues can be patched at a later date, so players (read: casuals like me who use said USD30 controllers) won’t be stewing about in-game issues for too long.
While there will be limits to what consoles can do, the sky is the limit if you’re playing on PC. My PC seemed to handle the game well on the highest settings,
although the look of the game will significantly go up the better your PC is, as is with all games. Sadly, there is a massive FPS drop in cutscenes, but as previously mentioned, this can easily be fixed through a patch. As for building and managing a team, you will need to pay close attention to detail and this may be the best mode if you’re a hardcore fan of Formula 1. Multiplayer is definitely my favorite mode here and I was tested pretty handily even in unranked mode.
If you love Formula 1 or racing games in general, F1 24 is an above-average experience. Even to complete racing noobs such as myself, it’s enjoyable. It doesn’t take much to get into the driver’s seat and race in these iconic tracks, whether you have a full-blown gaming setup or a USD30 controller. However, it doesn’t offer much in the way of innovation, and for some gamers, that might just be okay.

Smart warns customers against fake ‘rewards’ SMS scams and urges them to double-check URLs before clicking
Smart, the wireless unit of PLDT, warns the public about a new SMS modus urging customers to redeem their ‘points’ for ‘premium rewards’ before they expire by clicking the attached link that leads to a payment site. Smart denies ownership of the ‘smart-com-ph’ site mentioned in these fraudulent SMS. Smart has since reported the URL and blocked it from its network.
SCAMMED!
It warns customers to double-check links that are included in unsolicited SMS, even those supposedly coming from the network itself. Smart reminds its customers that its legitimate domain is https://www.smart.com.ph and any other iteration is fake. Smart also reiterates that its official domain ends with ‘.com.ph’.
“We remind our customers to double-check the text messages that they receive. As a rule, Smart does not include clickable links in SMS sent to our customers. We urge our customers to report suspicious messages to official Smart platforms,” said Alex O. Caeg, head of consumer wireless business at Smart.
Cathy Yang, FVP and group head of corporate communications, PLDT and Smart reiterates, “We remind our customers to carefully inspect URLs before opening them. Criminals often use spellings very close to legitimate domains to deceive customers into thinking they’re opening official websites.”
Smart has recently denied owning the domain ‘smart-com-ph’ that was used in the fake ‘rewards’ text scam. Scammers used the fake domain to lead the victims to a fake site mimicking the Smart website, stealing the victims’ sensitive information. Smart has since blocked the phishing domain, along with similarly crafted domain names, from its network.
Additionally, Smart reminds customers that rewards points can only be redeemed via the Smart App. Smart likewise stresses that it will never ask for credit card information or require payment to redeem rewards points.
As part of its #CyberSmart awareness campaign, Smart reminds customers to be vigilant against scams:
• Do not reply to unverified text messages.
• Block or delete suspicious messages with links. Never open these links.
• Scams often lure customers with too-good-tobe-true, attention-grabbing offers. These include winning the ‘grand prize’ of a raffle you don’t recall joining.
• Be wary of entities asking for personal or contact details, or any form of payment to redeem prizes or gifts.
PLDT and Smart have boosted efforts to protect customers from scammers. In the first four months this year, PLDT Group has prevented more than 16 million SMShing messages from reaching customers. Smart also blacklisted more than 333,000 mobile numbers tied to scams and phishing activities from its network in the same period.

SM Supermalls partners with public and private sectors to combat online fraud
In an effort to fortify consumer protection in the digital sphere, SM Supermalls, in collaboration with several government agencies, advocacy groups, and Meta, embarked on a pioneering initiative, aligning with the Be WAIS at Magduda campaign against fraud and scams.
The launch event, held at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall on May 11, 2024, marked the beginning of a concerted effort led by advocacy groups Bayan Academy and CitizenWatch Philippines to raise awareness about online fraud risks and equip consumers with the tools to identify and evade fraudulent activities prevalent in the digital landscape.
SM Supermalls affirmed the significance of the partnership in amplifying the campaign’s message.
“SM’s partnership with Meta, advocacy groups, and the government sector is one of our efforts to create a digital space as secure as our physical malls, and we are proud to amplify the Be WAIS message to protect Filipinos from these online dangers,” said SM Supermalls senior vice president for marketing Joaquin San Agustin.
The Philippines topped the list for online shopping scam rates in the 2023 Asia Scam Report, a survey conducted by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance in partnership with the Taiwan-based tech security company Gogolook.

Garmin recently announced the expansion of its ECG App to the Philippines, making it available across a range of units in the country.
The ECG App is an FDA-cleared app that allows users to record their heart rhythm and check for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib) right from their smartwatch. Users in the Philippines can now use the app to record a 30-second electrocardiogram (ECG) and view their heart rhythm results immediately on the watch or later in the Garmin Connect smartphone app.

This service stresses our commitment to providing the critical power infrastructure essential for the seamless operation of these facilities. We now have more than 30 service applications in the pipeline with a total capacity of 1,200MW.”
He also mentioned the company’s proactive approach to support the clean energy preferences of Meralco’s customers.
“Among our top priorities, we are recalibrating our green energy supply portfolio to meet the clean energy preferences of our partners – a move that also aligns with the DOE’s push for renewable energy (RE) solutions and its aggressive development of RE in the Philippines,” Mr. Geluz emphasized.

Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara, in her keynote address, echoed this prioritization and expanded it, as a key factor in the intended development of the hyperscale data industry and the
country’s economic growth in line with the Department’s Philippine Energy Plan. Usec. Guevara mentioned that the Department of Energy has implemented a range of plans, policies, and programs designed to facilitate immediate and strategic investments in support of this energy transition directive to clean energy and aggressive RE development in the Philippines.
Alongside the shift to clean energy is the government’s ongoing move towards digitalization with the launch of the e-Government app, the national ID rollout, and several initiatives for the full automation of national government services. In the forum, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Undersecretary for E-Government David Almirol also underscored the need for more data centers in the country as most government agencies currently use overseas cloud services, which could lead to data privacy and cybersecurity risks.

FEU TECH iCARE
From online struggles to classroom success, the power of personalized learning
Studying Civil Engineering at the height of the pandemic, FEU TECH student Gilbert Vinarao struggled with his calculus subjects. Upon transitioning back to face-to-face learning, he had to take a diagnostic exam to gauge his mastery of derivatives and integrals.
This is a universal story for all college students who abruptly shifted to online learning. Like Gilbert, other FEU TECH students faced challenges in grasping complex lessons while studying behind computer screens.
“Nung first time ko bumalik sa faceto-face setup, nag-announce na magkakaroon ng diagnostic exam (DE). Alam ko sa sarili ko na ‘di sapat ang
kaalaman ko sa Calculus 1 and 2, at kailangan kong baguhin study habits ko para sa second take ng DE,” he explains.
Luckily, FEU TECH has iCARE, a progressive solution that focuses on students’ well-being, including academic and mental health concerns that would otherwise be unaddressed and dismissed in more traditional learning environments.

For Leslie John C. Mendiola, a student navigating the complexities of Data Science, iCARE’s tailored support and dedicated lecturers helped in times of academic uncertainty. “The outstanding teaching, friendly environment, oneon-one and group support, and wealth of resources offered by iCARE were instrumental in helping me not only pass my course but thrive in areas where I was weak,” Leslie shares.
Angelica Prado’s shift from Accountancy to Civil Engineering also needed a more personalized learning approach, which iCARE provided to support a gap in her learning curve. “Transitioning from HUMSS to BS Accountancy to BS Civil Engineering was really hard for me, but iCARE fostered an environment where I can ask about confusing topics openly.”
Thirdly, iCARE fosters collaboration, participation, and knowledge sharing through peer-to-peer apprenticeship.
John Andrew Balbarosa, a Computer Science major, shares his experience of finding a second home within iCARE. “It became one of my go-to places if I wanted to hang out and study with my friends. We usually do our review sessions here, but you can also use the facility to do assignments,” he reflects.
With accessible resources like computers, charging ports, and whiteboards, iCARE provides a conducive environment for collaborative learning and growth.
Ralph Seyrol Cabuga and Paolo Cruz, both pursuing Civil Engineering, echo the sentiment of iCARE’s invaluable role in their academic pursuits. Ralph reminisces about the inclusive atmosphere of iCARE, while Paolo emphasizes the program’s commitment to organized review sessions and supportive staff, essential in navigating the rigorous demands of their field.
Similarly, Crister Lei Tolentino and Simon Michael Castillo, both in Computer Engineering, credit iCARE with their academic growth. Crister found motivation and developed new study habits through iCARE’s resources and community, while Simon conquered the hurdles of Calculus with targeted review classes and expert instruction.
An inclusive and proactive learning ecosystem
Traditional learning environments can be a one-way street.
Students are taught by professors and given written exams to test their knowledge. But iCARE fosters a 360 degree learning approach where students can be tutored by their peers or professors of their choice.
In 2023, iCARE launched the Tatak iCARE Program in support of the Peer Tutorial Services. Students can meet
with peer tutors for one-on-one or small group discussions. The pool of tutors includes selected FEU Tech Elite Scholars and iCARE Junior Associates — graduating students who chose iCARE as their internship project.
This is beneficial for students who are demotivated and with low self-esteem. In the company of their peers, some become more open in asking questions and sharing their struggles, as it is common to see students discussing academic problems among themselves.
FEU TECH also supports iCARE’s iMotivate Program, where notable alumni and professionals are invited to deliver motivational talks and inspire a positive and creative culture and learning environment for both students and faculty members.

Microsoft announced a commitment to equip 2.5 million people in member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with AI skills by 2025. The skilling initiatives will be implemented in partnership with governments, nonprofit and corporate organizations, and communities across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Microsoft’s commitment aligns with the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025 to build an AI-ready talent pool in the region. It is also part of the company’s broader goal to empower individuals, organizations, and communities in ASEAN countries to harness the potential of AI to drive innovation and economic growth.
Dr Piti Srisangnam, executive director of the ASEAN Foundation, said: “We appreciate Microsoft’s commitment to upskilling ASEAN youth in AI, a pivotal step aligning with the ASEAN

In the Philippines, Microsoft is committed to equipping 1 million Department of Education learners from kindergarten to grade 12 with AI and cybersecurity skills, ensuring
their readiness for future careers and employment opportunities. Furthermore, Microsoft will strengthen its collaboration with the nation’s Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) by investing in a new initiative to equip 100,000 TESDA female learners with AI and cybersecurity skills. This will help foster a diverse talent pipeline for the country’s digital transformation.
Through the AI TEACH for Indonesia and AI TEACH Malaysia programs, Microsoft and the ASEAN Foundation will provide technical and vocational education and training students with
AI skills. Microsoft is also training and educating 100,000 underserved youths and job seekers in AI, data, and security through its existing partnership with Kartu Prakerja, the largest preemployment program in Indonesia.
In addition, Microsoft is launching the AI Skills for the AI-enabled Tourism Industry program in partnership with Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Ministry of Labour, and the nation’s Technology Vocational Education Training Institute. The initiative will skill 100,000 young entrepreneurs involved in tourism
businesses across minor-tier geographic provinces in all five regions of Thailand.
Microsoft will also expand its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme Asia Pacific in Indonesia to Malaysia and Vietnam, helping 570,000 youth from underserved communities enhance their employability and work readiness through access to AI fluency skills.

Empowering nonprofit organizations to maximize their social impact
In June 2024, Microsoft will host its first Nonprofit Leaders’ Summit to equip 1,500 nonprofit employees with knowledge and skills in AI and digital technologies.
Microsoft will also provide nonprofits in ASEAN countries with access to the Microsoft Resources Hub and the LinkedIn for Nonprofits Resource Hub to help maximize their social impact and lead change in the AI era.

Dyson recently unveiled its latest floorcare technology, designed to pick up wet and dry debris in one go to deliver a hygienic clean on hard floors, across large spaces. With a 1-litre clean water tank to cover flooring up to 290sqm, the Dyson Wash G1 uses a combination of hydration, absorption, and extraction technologies to remove wet and dry debris in one go — automatically separating it out, so maintenance is more hygienic.
Charlie Park, vice president of Dyson home engineering, notes: “Most of us vacuum our homes regularly. But whilst wet cleaning is considered a necessary chore globally, many of us don’t know why we do it beyond the vague notion of hygiene. In fact, cleaning with water is essential to rehydrate and remove tough, driedon stains. Over the years, a vast array of wet floor cleaning formats have emerged to help us tackle this chore yet users’ expectations are often left unfulfilled when it comes to stain removal, pick-up performance, and floor finish. Dyson engineers solve the problems others ignore and we thrive on the challenge of creating better technology. The Dyson WashG1 is the result of this; our first dedicated wet machine to wash hard floors, properly and hygienically.”
HIGHLY ABSORBENT, COUNTER-ROTATING ROLLERS
Two individually powered rollers counter-rotate whilst a pulse-modulated pump distributes water evenly across 26 precisely positioned hydration points, along the full width of each roller.
Each roller is made up of a highly absorbent microfibre, with 64,800 filaments per square centimeter. This combination of high-density microfibre and consistent application of clean water ensures liquid spills are absorbed, whilst dry dirt, debris, and hair are enveloped by the millions of filaments. By positioning two rollers at the front and back of the machine, Dyson engineers also achieved longer dwell time on stains with each pass, for powerful and fast stain removal.
PIONEERING SEPARATION TECHNOLOGY FOR HYGIENIC MAINTENANCE
Dyson’s unique separation technology divides debris and dirty water at source, for hygienic, no-touch disposal. Dirty water is extracted from the rollers by durable extraction plates, whilst secondary nylon-bristled inner brush bars remove dirt and debris from the microfibre rollers, flicking it straight into a removable debris tray.
The debris tray has been designed with a 500-micron mesh to separate dirty water from the large debris. Powered by an extraction pump, dirty water is immediately collected in a 0.8-litre capacity dirty water tank, without allowing large debris to pass through the machine. Keeping the dirt and debris in the head of the machine, and the dirty water in a separate tank allows for easy and hygienic disposal. To further support ease of maintenance for users, the Dyson WasG1 has been intricately designed without sharp internal surfaces or crevices, to help lessen dirt or grime build up inside the machine. Both water tanks have been designed with large openings to allow for easy maintenance and cleaning.
After use, the self-cleaning mode saturates both rollers with clean water on the highest boost setting, flushing the entire system in preparation for the next clean.
CUSTOMIZED HYDRATION CONTROL FOR AN OPTIMUM FLOOR FINISH
The Dyson WashG1 has been designed with in-use hydration control, allowing owners to select the level of hydration required based on debris type, flooring, or personal preference. The low, medium, and high modes each run continuously once selected, to provide increased levels of hydration respectively. Each mode also features an additional three sensitivity settings, to allow owners to fine tune them to their individual cleaning needs. A separate boost mode button purges each roller with the maximum amount of hydration when pressed, for removal of stubborn dirt and dried on stains.
MANEUVERABILITY AND EDGE-TO-EDGE

The rollers span the full width of the cleaner head to allow for edge-to-edge cleaning, right to the corners. The Dyson WashG1 has been designed with two motors that sit within each microfibre roller, spinning in opposite directions so they clean in both directions.
For optimized maneuverability, Dyson engineers fine-tuned each motor to spin at a consistent speed in accordance with the hydration mode selected, allowing the machine to glide effortlessly whilst cleaning is in process. Adopting technology from the Dyson Omni-glide, casters provide additional balance and weight support, whilst the low cleaner head height allows for easy reach underneath furniture.

WHOLE-OF-ASIA, WHOLE-OFSOCIETY NEEDED TO FIGHT CYBER THREATS IN THE ASIA REGION
Leaders of Philippine Cybersecurity and Data Protection Communities of Practice attending the ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Technical Working Group joint meeting highlight the urgency for all government and private sector organizations to work in harmony together to fight against cyber threats in the Asia region.
“A harmonious whole-of-Asia and whole-of-society approach to fight cyber threats in the region has to be orchestrated among government and private sector leaders in ASEAN and Japan, along with other countries in the region,” Lito Averia, president of the Philippine Computer Emergency Response Team (PH-CERT) said. “Asian countries face the same threats, and all countries attending confirmed that their respective government’s digital infrastructure along with Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) are also being attacked constantly by international and even local threat actors,” he added.
“The constantly increasing cyber attacks on government digital ecosystems and CIIs call for nations in the Asia region to establish concrete solutions such as an Information Exchange Network which will serve as a cyber weather station that will receive, verify, then send out threat alerts to everyone that will impacted in the region,” Sam Jacoba, founding president of the National Association of Data Protection Officers of the Philippines (NADPOP), and PHCERT vice-president explained, adding: ”In parallel, each country should continue to produce new cybersecurity professionals and to upskill current cybersecurity and information security personnel that are already working in government and private organizations.”
For the Philippines, PH-CERT and NADPOP estimate that the country needs 180,000 trained and validated cybersecurity professionals to proactively and effectively protect its CIIs. Both communities added that the Philippines also needs a similar number of Data Privacy and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) trained and validated professionals.
PH-CERT and NADPOP are also attended the fifth board meeting of the newly formed ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Community Alliance (AJCCA), a community event happening alongside the 2024 2nd ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Working Group Meeting, organized and hosted by the government of Cambodia.
The 2nd Joint Government-IndustryAcademia (J-GIA) CA meeting between AJCCA and government cybersecurity representatives from ASEAN and Japan, highlights the importance of harmonious collaboration among countries in the region, focusing on the five pillars of the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) published by the United Nations International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The five cybersecurity pillars are the following: Legal,
Technical, Organizational, Capacity Building, and Cooperation.
Averia and Jacoba shared that joint initiatives between the government and private sector will be rolling out soon as the main output of these quarterly regional meetings. These initiatives can address the main gaps in the GCI Cybersecurity Pillars for each country and the whole region as well.
“When government and private sector organizations work hand-in-hand to fight cyber threats, citizens will benefit the most,” Averia stressed. “We already see the positive dynamics and impact of this cybersecurity community in the region.”
“What is emerging through these meetings is a regional force for good that will serve as a shield for countries and citizens against threat actors, who are now using AI in their attacks.” Jacoba added. “We are inviting all active Communities of Practice in the region to collaborate with our regional community, the AJCCA, as threat actors are also organized in their actions. During these times, we truly need a whole-of-region, whole-ofsociety, and even whole-of-community cooperation to effectively respond to cyber threats.”

Interested startups were asked to focus on these specific challenges:
1. Employee benefits: To enable effective sourcing and presentation of a comprehensive range of employee benefits options for effective implementation.
2. Retail operation: To optimize the expansion of merchandiser teams to serve more stores cost-effectively.
3. Transport and logistics: To improve the cost-efficiency and service performance of third-party logistics providers for last-mile delivery services.
4. Online-to-offline trial: To enable trial offers that captivate target consumers by delivering online experiences that drive in-store (offline) sales.
5. Supply chain promotions: To reduce the cost and end-to-end process lead time for initiating a new bundle, designing and procuring the packaging, managing the inventory and allocating the bundling to the right teams.

Applicants for this program can include startups, companies, and enterprises that have already passed the minimum viable product (MVP) stage. They should be revenuegenerating and registered entities, either in the Philippines or abroad. The solutions sought can cover a wide range of areas, including Human Resources and Health Wellness, Sales Development, Logistics, Marketing, Customization, and Branding/ Creatives.
Selected startups will have the opportunity to establish partnerships and engagements with P&G Philippines. Noteworthy examples of past awardees from vGROW’s
innovation search in other APAC markets include Bounty Media (2022), a data tech company that facilitates connections between consumers and trusted brands through zero-party data. Game executives such as controversial former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick (who majored in art history) have called video games an art form in several interviews. The magazine Video Games Player said that video games “are as much as an art form as any other field of entertainment” in 1983. Personally, I believe that video games are an art form, as there are numerous mods of popular video games that have existed for over 40 years, and new mods have popped up in modern games as well. How have people successfully argued the case for video games as an art form through mods?
The first game to have mods was Lode Runner (1983), which may have also been the first game to have a level editor, as players could create their own levels and share them on the same computer.
While modding was generally restricted to PC gaming at this time, this kickstarted the 40+ year history of modifying video games. Later on, id Software’s Wolfenstein 3D (1992), Doom (1993) and Quake (1996) offered robust mod tools, with players creating their own levels on a regular basis for their respective communities.
By the end of the 1990s, Half-Life (1998) mod Counter-Strike (1999) burst onto the scene. Counter-Strike was so popular that Half-Life developers Valve bought the intellectual property from the game’s modders, Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess “Cliffe” Cliffe. Counter-Strike has arguably become far more popular than Half-Life and is one of the most played online first-person shooters (FPS) to this day. While modders loved FPS games at first, other genres of video games also have popular mods, such as The Sims (2000) and Warcraft III (2002). Warcraft
III spawned another mod called Defense of the Ancients, or DOTA (2003). Valve also acquired this intellectual property in 2009 to create DOTA 2 (2013), which, like Counter-Strike, became another mod that far surpassed the source material’s popularity.
Steam created its own modding community, Steam Workshop, originally for custom items in Team Fortress 2 (2007), another Half-Life mod. Valve then modified Steam Workshop in 2012 to include any game that was distributed on the Steam platform, massively expanding the modding community and allowed for mod creators to monetize their creations. By 2015, modders made USD57 million from Steam Workshop, although Steam discontinued this feature after backlash from their announcement to share revenues with game developers. Many modders have created free content over the years and have even used these mods
to break into the gaming industry as developers, programmers, designers, and other roles in game development.
Games such as World of Warcraft (2004) and Grand Theft Auto (GTA) V (2013) heavily depend on mods as well. Some mods may be cosmetic (i.e. changing the default user interface), assist the player with in-game tasks, or even recreate the game itself using a combination of in-game assets and player-created content. There are numerous role-playing servers in GTA V where one can play the game as a cop, a criminal, or another job, and take on a slew of side jobs such as working at various businesses in the GTA V universe.
There are also games such as Minecraft (2011) that are complete sandbox games. People have recreated entire games in Minecraft itself like The Legend of Zelda and even real-life locations such as the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London in the United Kingdom, downtown Chicago in the United States, and the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Players old and young alike have flocked to Minecraft as a result, making it something multiple generations of gamers can enjoy together.
Like with all forms of art, there were also controversies in video game modding. Notorious American school shooters
Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were very active in creating custom levels in Doom. This suggested to the public that their interest in violent video games was directly connected to the tragic Columbine High School shooting in 1999. Modders also discovered the “Hot Coffee” minigame in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004) which featured a sexually explicit scene. The game even briefly gained an “Adults Only” (AO) rating until Rockstar patched it out of the game. Due to this, the game was also banned in Australia.
Video game modding has opened up gaming to a wider audience who can put their own twist on the games they know and love. While some mods far surpassed their source material in popularity and others have become funny, controversial, or flat out strange in the eyes of gamers, it is a legitimate art form that has been around almost as long as video games themselves. For any aspiring artists out there who seek to make a name for themselves, the world of video game modding is always open.
