Imagine a laptop that keeps pace with your creative needs. That’s exactly what Lenovo’s Yoga 7i 2-in-1 (14”, Gen 9) delivers! Powered by the Intel Evo platform, this laptop-tablet hybrid is designed for creators, handling complex tasks with remarkable ease.

DESIGN

Unboxing this laptop, I was immediately struck by its sleek Tidal Teal finish—it’s unique, modern, and truly stands out. Though at 1.49kg it’s not the lightest, the added weight adds to its robust build, which I appreciate when switching to tablet mode. Speaking of which, the 360-degree hinge is smooth and folds completely, allowing for a seamless transition between laptop and tablet use, whichever is appropriate for the task at hand.

The 14-inch OLED PureSight display with a resolution of 2800 x 1800 impressed me right away. The high pixel density means sharp and detailed visuals, and the OLED technology enhances color richness and contrast, perfect for design work. Its adaptive refresh rate, from 60Hz to

120Hz, balances performance with energy efficiency, something I noticed while switching between tasks.

Lenovo’s keyboard remains a joy to use, with well-spaced keys that are comfortable for longer typing sessions. I also liked the backlit feature for late-night work. The touchpad’s position and size are welldesigned, providing enough space for comfortable typing.

The two 2W Dolby Atmos-powered speakers on the sides of the keyboard deliver surprisingly rich audio for such a compact device.

When closed, the laptop’s rounded edges provide a secure, comfortable grip. The ports are conveniently placed: a USB Type-A, microSD card reader, and power button on the right; and HDMI, two USB Type-C ports, and a headphone jack on the left.

HARDWARE

Under the hood, the Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1 is equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 processor, clocking in at 1.40GHz, which has been a dream for my multitasking needs. Paired with the Intel Evo platform, the AI capabilities really enhance my workflow, prioritizing tasks and optimizing power for a long-lasting battery life. I especially enjoyed how responsive it felt when managing several creative applications simultaneously.

The Lenovo AI Engine+ is another feature I enjoyed—it adapts based on my usage patterns, so the laptop seems to get faster the more I use it. The Intel Arc Graphics card handles high-definition streaming, productivity apps, and light gaming with ease. While it’s not meant for intensive gaming, it’s more than capable for my everyday creative work.

After running Geekbench 6, I was impressed by the performance: the CPU scored 2143 for single-core and 7782 for multi-core tasks, demonstrating solid performance for my everyday and creative needs. The OpenCL score of 26,918 for graphics translates to smooth visuals and efficient rendering, which I appreciate during video editing. The 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD has been a delight as well, providing fast data transfer speeds and plenty of space for my files. Coupled with 32GB of RAM, this laptop breezes through multitasking without lag.

USER EXPERIENCE

As someone who constantly shifts between different tasks, I value a laptop that’s adaptable as my workspace. The Lenovo Yoga 7i shines here with its 2-in-1 flexibility. The 360-degree hinge makes switching to tablet mode surprisingly enjoyable, though I admit it does get heavy if held for long periods. When I place it on a desk or use it with a stylus, it’s a perfect setup for drawing and editing.

The Lenovo AI Engine+ and Intel Core Ultra 7 platform combine to offer smooth, responsive performance. The AI features particularly shine when editing videos— using Wondershare Filmora, I noticed how the AI helped with transitions and color adjustments, making my workflow much easier. I only wish I had full access to the software beyond the trial version. For photo editing, the AI-driven “Edit with Designer” feature in the builtin photo app, powered by Microsoft Designer, was a pleasant surprise, offering tools like background removal and autoenhancement. Having the pro version of

Microsoft Copilot would enhance this experience even more.

One drawback is the heat generated near the keyboard during heavy use, likely due to the single-fan design. As a writer, this can be uncomfortable, so I’d recommend a laptop stand to improve airflow. Interestingly, in tablet mode, the heat issue is less noticeable, making it more comfortable for drawing or casual browsing.

On the entertainment front, the Dolby Vision and Atmos pair well with the 2.8K OLED display, making it a joy to

watch movies or animations. Battery life generally supports my day-to-day use, though running power-hungry applications like Luminar Neo and Discord drains it more quickly.

For gaming, I tested Valorant, and it ran smoothly. However, the cooling system does struggle during extended sessions; using a stand or external fan can help prevent overheating. While Shadow of the Tomb Raider caused some lag, the audio quality was excellent, delivering powerful and cinematic sound. Valorant, however, had lower volume, which slightly impacted the experience.

VALUE

The Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1, priced at PHP79,995, offers high-quality components and a stylish, versatile design. The 2.8K OLED PureSight display alone justifies much of the cost. Providing full access to AI-powered applications would allow users to fully leverage the advanced features without any limitation.

When I heard about the TP-Link Deco BE25, I was curious to see how it would compare to my existing Deco X55 mesh system. The X55 had been serving my household well, delivering stable and reliable Wi-Fi, but the appeal of the new WiFi 7 capabilities in the Deco BE25 had me intrigued. Promising ultra-fast speeds, seamless connectivity throughout the house, and the ability to handle numerous devices without lag, the Deco BE25 seemed like a perfect upgrade. So, I set it up alongside my X55 and quickly saw how much of a game-changer this latest model is for a tech-heavy household.

MESH WIFI

DESIGN

Right out of the box, the Deco BE25 feels like an evolution of the Deco design language—sleek, compact, and with an understated modern look. Disc-shaped, it measures 150 x 150 x 62mm, making it easy to position without being obtrusive. Unlike traditional routers, the Deco BE25 has a smooth, streamlined appearance with internal antennas, contributing to its aesthetic and functional appeal.

Setting it up alongside my existing X55 units, I was pleased to see that the BE25 was just as flexible in terms of placement. I simply placed it on the family room console table without worrying about it looking out of place. The build quality is equally impressive, feeling robust yet light, and the ventilation system ensures it doesn’t overheat even when every device in the house is online.

Its subtle LED indicator adds a practical touch, allowing you to quickly check the network’s status at a glance. The LED is dim enough to avoid being a distraction but informative enough to alert you if there’s a connectivity issue.

HARDWARE

The Deco BE25 packs some serious power under the hood, which is essential for a Wi-Fi 7 router that’s built to handle intense network demands. This dual-band router offers speeds up to 5000Mbps, with 4324Mbps on the 5GHz band and 688Mbps on the 2.4GHz band.

Wi-Fi 7 technology includes features like 4K-QAM (4096 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) and OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access), which maximize data transmission efficiency and reduce latency, ensuring smooth performance even when multiple devices are connected.

Internally, the Deco BE25 includes four high-performance antennas, which are arranged to optimize coverage and eliminate dead zones. These antennas, though hidden within the device, are crucial to its impressive reach, particularly in homes with multiple floors or thick walls. The device’s dual 2.5Gbps LAN ports are a standout feature, providing high-speed wired connections ideal for bandwidth-heavy devices such as desktop

PCs and smart TVs. This capability is perfect for working on the cloud, streaming high-resolution content, or competitive gaming, where latency can make all the difference.

The Deco BE25’s hardware is also designed with security in mind. It features WPA3 encryption, the latest standard for wireless security, which helps keep data safe from unauthorized access and cyber threats. TP-Link’s HomeShield (available as a paid feature) further enhances the security profile, adding advanced malware protection and parental controls. This combination of high-speed hardware and robust security features makes the Deco BE25 one of the most capable and secure routers available for home use today.

USER EXPERIENCE

One of the strongest aspects of the Deco BE25 is its user-friendly setup and management. TP-Link’s Deco app, available for iOS and Android, makes installation straightforward with clear visuals and instructions. Even though I was already familiar with the setup process, I appreciated the app’s step-bystep visuals.

With the Deco app previously set up and configured for my existing Deco X55 mesh setup, all I needed to do was add the Deco B25 as an additional device and then designate it as the main router, delegating the two X55 units as access points. I did not even need to change our home Wi-Fi network name and password.

In my household, we have some 30 connected devices at any given time, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, multi-function printers, smart TVs, smart home appliances, and a home security system, among others, spread out in various locations across a two-story home. Thus, any improvement in speed and connectivity is appreciated.

Moreover, our WFH setup means we operate in a cloud-first environment, accessing resources and collaborating with colleagues online. Often, family members would be attending zoom meetings or streaming online events at the same time. With the Deco BE25, the network ran smoothly, without any noticeable lag or buffering. I am especially pleased with the speed and responsiveness of cloudbased document editing, which seems indistinguishable from working on local files stored on my computer.

With our previous X55 mesh setup, I experienced some connectivity drops when moving from the living room to my bedroom. The Deco BE25 seems to have eliminated this issue with its seamless roaming and Multi-Link Operation (MLO). By balancing data across different channels, MLO ensures smooth connectivity across multiple devices.

The Deco app continues to be useful, allowing me to easily monitor connected devices, prioritize specific ones, and manage bandwidth allocation. For example, I could designate my iMac as a high priority device, ensuring that it gets the bandwidth it needs when I’m working.

VALUE

At PHP13,990, the Deco BE25 is an investment, but it feels justified. Its Wi-Fi 7 capabilities, faster speeds, and dual 2.5Gbps LAN ports make it a future-proof choice, especially for a household with many connected devices or those needing ultra-reliable speeds for work, streaming, or gaming.

One thing I particularly appreciate is its backward compatibility. I didn’t need to replace any of my older devices when upgrading, and since it works seamlessly with the X55, I can even keep both systems in place for extended coverage. This flexibility, along with the expandable nature of the Deco system, means it’s easy to add units as needed for a layered mesh network.

The TP-Link Deco BE25 offers high-speed, future-proof connectivity, making it a premium choice for demanding home networks.

Over the past two years, HONOR Philippines has impressed with its wide-ranging lineup of gadgets. From budget-friendly X-series phones to feature-packed N-series models and flagship Magic-series devices, HONOR caters to various needs and price points. The Magic series, in particular, stands out for its exceptional cameras, consistently ranking among the best in the market.

But HONOR’s expertise isn’t limited to smartphones. Their HONOR MagicBook laptops have proven to be reliable budget options, and their tablets, such as the midrange HONOR Pad 9, have also garnered attention. Now, HONOR has introduced its most affordable tablet yet—the HONOR Pad X8a, which could become the perfect companion for students.

DESIGN

The HONOR Pad X8a is an 11-inch entry-level tablet with a TFT LCD display offering Full HD resolution (1920 x 1200) and a 90Hz refresh rate. The display includes features like Dynamic Dimming and E-book Mode for eye comfort, and it comes with TUV Rheinland certifications for low blue light and flicker-free performance. These additions make the tablet well-suited for extended use, whether for reading or streaming.

The tablet is only available in Space Gray, but its sleek aluminum body adds a touch of elegance that belies its budget-friendly price. It’s also impressively lightweight, weighing just 495 grams. This combination of design and portability makes it ideal for users on the go.

In terms of layout, the HONOR Pad X8a is practical and user-friendly. The front camera is positioned for landscape use, making it perfect for video calls and classes. On the top edge, you’ll find the volume and power buttons along with the microSD tray, while the sides house the quad-speaker setup. The USB-C port is located on the right side, ensuring easy access for charging and data transfer.

HARDWARE

While adequate for an entry-level tablet, the hardware shows its limitations. The Snapdragon 680 is a three-year-old processor, and the relatively small RAM can result in occasional slowdowns. That said, the tablet performs well for lighter tasks.

It handles casual games like Wild Rift and Honor of Kings smoothly, even on higher settings. However, more demanding titles such as Genshin Impact require settings to be reduced for playable performance.

The cameras—a 5MP front camera and a 5MP rear camera—are basic but functional. They perform decently in good lighting but struggle in low-light conditions, making them less ideal for photography.

Battery life is one of the tablet’s strengths, thanks to its 8,300mAh capacity. It lasts about a full day with heavy use, leaving around 25% charge by

the end of the day. For lighter use, it can go up to two and a half days. However, the lack of fast charging is a drawback, as the device takes around four hours to charge fully.

Entry-level tablets often fall short in delivering a smooth user experience, but the HONOR Pad X8a stands out in several ways. Its balance of affordability, functionality, and portability makes it a practical choice, especially for students.

The PHP 7,999 price tag is one of the most attractive features of the HONOR Pad X8a. The 11-inch screen hits the sweet spot—it’s large enough to function as a mini-laptop with the right tools while remaining lightweight and portable for one-handed use. It’s also an excellent option for eBook reading, potentially replacing heavy textbooks.

During testing, I used the HONOR Pad X8a for graduate school classes, and it handled the demands surprisingly well. While opening large PDFs or switching between apps occasionally revealed its limitations, the tablet performed admirably once files were loaded. The quad-speaker setup enhances the multimedia experience, offering decent sound quality at medium volume levels, though high volumes may introduce slight distortions.

The TFT LCD display, while functional, feels outdated compared to OLED screens.

The difference is particularly noticeable when switching between the tablet and a modern smartphone. However, the screen is still adequate for binge-watching Netflix or other streaming platforms.

The compromises inherent in an entrylevel device are evident, particularly in processing power and RAM. Multitasking can be sluggish, and the lack of fast charging is inconvenient. Despite these limitations, the HONOR Pad X8a remains a reliable and practical option for its price.

The HONOR Pad X8a offers remarkable value for its PHP7,999 price point. It may not deliver cutting-edge performance, but it excels in areas that matter most to students and casual users. The 11-inch display, expandable storage, and decent video conferencing capabilities make it a solid study companion.

The tablet is also versatile enough for entertainment and light productivity tasks, making it an appealing option for those on a tight budget. While it has its limitations, its strengths—such as affordability and practicality—far outweigh the drawbacks.

Marshall has long been a trusted name in the audio world, famed for its iconic guitar amps and retro-inspired designs. The Minor IV True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds bring the brand’s signature style and sound to the competitive world of wireless audio. Positioned as a mid-tier option for casual listeners and loyal fans of the brand, the Minor IV promises a unique mix of style, sound quality, and simplicity. After weeks of testing, I’ve unpacked its strengths, weaknesses, and quirks to determine who these earbuds are truly for.

DESIGN

Marshall’s Minor IV earbuds stay true to the brand’s aesthetic, giving them a premium look and making them stand out among competitors.

One of the key strengths of the Minor IV design is its lightweight construction. The earbuds are compact and sport a textured black finish with the classic Marshall logo stamped boldly across the surface. Each earbud weighs just 7.38 grams, making them easy to wear for extended periods. However, there’s a caveat: the earbuds lack silicone ear tips, relying instead on a one-size-fits-all hard plastic design. While they fit snugly in my ears and don’t readily fall out, this design won’t work for everyone, especially those with smaller ear canals or who prefer the added security of adjustable tips.

The buds are IPX4-rated for water resistance. Although not suitable for swimming, they can handle sweat and light rain.

If there’s one area where the design truly shines, it’s the understated elegance of the charging case. Its leather-like exterior, with the Marshall logo boldly embossed across the front, exudes a premium feel.

Its compact size and lightweight (39.4g) make it perfect for slipping into your pocket or bag. It also offers wireless charging —a feature I was unable to test, unfortunately— which gives the Minor IV another edge in convenience.

HARDWARE

The Minor IV earbuds are equipped with 12mm dynamic drivers and two microphones on each bud. Marshall has tuned these drivers to deliver a distinctive sound signature. Multipoint Bluetooth 5.3 ensures a stable and reliable connection.

One of the standout features of the Minor IV is its battery life. The earbuds themselves provide an impressive 7 hours of playback on a single charge, and the charging case extends that to over 30 hours. Moreover, it supports quick charging, delivering 3hrs of playtime in 15-minutes. It takes only 1.1hrs to recharge the earbuds and 2hrs to recharge the case through the USB-C port.

One drawback for some could be the absence of active noise cancellation (ANC). Personally, I don’t mind, as I prefer to be ambient-aware.

USER EXPERIENCE

Using the Minor IV is refreshingly simple. Pairing the earbuds is quick and reliable, and once connected, they hold a steady signal with minimal dropouts. With Multipoint Bluetooth connectivity, I was able to pair my iPhone and iPad simultaneously, allowing me to conveniently take a call on my phone while watching a video on my tablet without having to take out my earbuds.

The controls are touch-sensitive, which aligns well with the minimalist aesthetic but comes with frustrations. Accidental touches were a frequent annoyance, particularly when adjusting the earbuds in my ears. The lack of physical buttons also meant that I occasionally misfired commands when trying to pause music or skip tracks. The touch controls allow for essential functions like play/pause, skipping tracks, and adjusting volume (although I can never remember how many taps does what).

Sound quality is where the Minor IV shows both its strengths and limitations. Marshall has tuned these earbuds with a warm, bass-heavy signature, which is great for genres like rock, hip-hop, and pop. The mids are rich and well-defined, and the highs are present but understated.

I initially found the bass too overpowering for my taste as I prefer a more treble-forward sound, highlighting the intricacies of acoustic and classical tracks. Fortunately, the companion

Marshall app allows customization on a 5-band equalizer. That said, the spatial imaging of the earbuds deserves praise, as the sound comes across as full and wellseparated.

Battery life has been mentioned earlier, but I must reiterate how impressed I am with this feature. I usually sleep with earphones on, and these are probably the first earbuds that have lasted through the night without dying on me. A quick recharge while I’m getting ready for work, and they’re good to go the whole day.

The accompanying Marshall app also offers additional support beyond sound equalization. For instance, the app shows the battery percentage for the earbuds and case, making up for the absence of a charge indicator on the case itself. It has a unique Battery Preservation option to reduce stress and prolong battery life. Finally, the app allows for OTA firmware updates, ensuring the earbuds keep up with the latest features and functionalities.

VALUE

Priced at PHP6,690, the Minor IV positions itself in the crowded midrange segment of wireless earbuds. Its strengths—excellent battery life, stylish design, and customizable sound—make it a good option for everyday use.

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) recently showcased its upcoming Next Generation Tamaraw and a hydrogen-powered concept vehicle to Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. at Malacañan Palace. The event emphasized TMP’s dedication to advancing local automotive manufacturing, promoting sustainable mobility solutions, and driving economic growth in the Philippines.

President Marcos expressed his appreciation for Toyota’s continued investment in the country, notably the recent PHP5.5 billion investment in producing the locally-made Next

Generation Tamaraw, also known regionally as the Toyota Innovative International Multi-Purpose Vehicle (IMV) 0 (Zero). This investment supports vehicle production, parts localization, and the establishment of a new in-house vehicle conversion capability, further solidifying TMP’s role in sustaining the viability of the automotive and parts manufacturing industries in the Philippines. At the same event, TMP presented President Marcos with a letter of intent regarding a planned donation of five Tamaraw units, set to be converted and delivered to the government in 2025. These units, including five ambulances, will support the mobility needs of the “Lab For All” health program led by First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos.

Toyota also introduced its “Beyond Zero” movement to reinforce its global commitment to Carbon Neutrality. This corporate initiative supports the Philippine government’s shift towards a clean energy, low-carbon economy, aligning with national policies such as the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) and the Philippine Energy Plan.

In my experience, party games can be fun, challenging, and competitive. A common marketing phrase that has existed long before gaming has been “fun for the whole family,” and party games can get everyone involved—your parents, siblings, relatives, and friends can all join in and make gaming a family and/or friends event. Throw in the classic Mario characters we all know and love, and it becomes even better as multiple generations of people will be familiar with our favorite Italian plumber and his ever-growing cast of friends in Super Mario Party Jamboree

Players start in the Party Plaza and can choose from a cast of 22 characters, including Mario, Luigi, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, Daisy, Peach, and more. New characters include Pauline from the Donkey Kong series and Ninji from Super Mario Bros. 2. The main mode, simply named Mario Party, lets you and three other friends (or AI-controlled characters) play a board game where whoever collects the most stars wins. Sounds simple enough, right? There is a lot that Jamboree offers in this installment.

You can collect items that can help or harm your chances at winning, and at the end of everyone’s turns, you play a minigame that requires mastery of motion controls (although you can turn them off). Jamboree Buddies can come in and help you win the game as well after playing the mini-game, and they can last three turns. For instance, you can have Waluigi steal coins from your opponents when he passes them. For those with that competitive spirit in them, you can also play with “Pro Rules” that removes most luck-based aspects in the game and truly makes it a test of skill.

Gaming

For those going at it solo, you can play “Party Planner Trek” mode and talk to various NPCs who give you quests or minigames to collect Mini-Stars to unlock customization options for your characters. When you collect a certain number of Mini-Stars, you then play a Boss Minigame (complete with boss health bars and all). Another mode called “Minigame Bay” mode allows you to freely play any minigame or a set of minigames that can be arranged by themes, allowing you to truly challenge yourself even in an unbalanced way (1v3). Boss Rush sub-mode, which is unlocked after 30 in-game achievements, allows you and your friends to compete in boss minigames with the highest score winning.

One of my favorite modes that utilizes motion controls is “Rhythm Kitchen” mode, a rhythm-based minigame with a cooking theme. “Toad’s Factory” mode is a puzzle-based game where players have to move a ball to a goal (and a corporate team-building exercise if you so wish). The mode that truly tested my party game chops was “Paratroopa Flight School” mode as you have to move singular Joy-Con controllers to mimic flapping wings a la the notorious 2013 mobile game Flappy Bird. You can compete in sub-modes for time attack, carry characters to destinations, or even just fly around aimlessly.

Jamboree brings a pretty interesting mode called “Bowser Kaboom Squad” mode which allows eight players to fight Imposter Bowser through various objectives and by playing minigames for objects to defeat him faster. “Koopathlon” mode has 20 players competing to complete laps around a board through collecting coins in minigames. After three of these minigames, a Bowser-themed minigame happens when players can be sent backward on the board if they lose. You can play either through local or online multiplayer, allowing you to keep the fun going in-person or online. You can even climb an online leaderboard by playing minigames and compete to be the very best not only among your friends and family, but also among people all over the world.

Super Mario Party Jamboree is fun for everyone, bringing the nostalgia of previous Mario Party entries while introducing the characters to a whole new generation of gamers. The Mario franchise is Shigeru Miyamoto’s brainchild, and Jamboree continues to build on a legacy that has lasted for over 40 years and continues to wow all gamers to this very day. As the victor of the National Final, Soj Gamayon is bound for Tokyo, Japan this December to showcase his idea on the world stage as the representative of the Philippines at the Red Bull Basement World Final, where innovators from 40 countries will gather together to compete for the title of Red Bull Basement World Champion. Along with the chance to win the title, Gamayon will also receive invaluable networking and mentorship opportunities, gaining him exposure to industry leaders and fellow innovators.

Reflecting on his win, Gamayon said, “It’s so surreal. It wasn’t in my expectations, honestly, I was just here because I knew I had so much more to learn, and this is for me such a great bonus.” He added, “I see it more as a responsibility to hopefully bring in the championship for the Philippines.”

The young innovator shared that two things inspired his winning concept. He said, “I come from a province that is really big in rice farming. And I really saw the complexities that they face every single day. The second thing is that I was fortunate enough to be sent to Singapore and be immersed in the startup ecosystem there. I interned for a company that helps shrimp farmers manage their risk of disease testing. When I came back here, I felt like there was a responsibility for me to make a greater impact.”

With his winning innovation, Gamayon said that he hopes to revolutionize farming. He stated, “It’s making things simpler and more efficient for agricompanies. As we all know, rice is a very vital part of our economy and our world. So, we need to make sure that in order for us to have this constant demand, we need to make sure we simplify and have a more strategic way of approaching rice farming.”

Before the days of online shopping, one had to go to the nearest department store to shop for holiday gifts. There were many department stores you could visit to buy whatever you wanted—many offered products and services that covered whatever you could think of. Many of these department stores were in business for over a century before ceasing operations or scaling them back drastically. Kmart is an example of one of these department stores, but what did it do differently that set it apart from its competitors, and how did it survive the rise of online shopping and even the COVID-19 pandemic?

First off, this will not only cover Kmart and its history but this article might as well double as an obituary for Kmart. The last full-service Kmart in the United States, located in New York, shuttered on October 20, 2024, while Kmart lives on in Australia and (ironically) as an online retailer. S.S. Kresge, the founder of Kmart, started as a traveling salesman selling to another future department store, Woolworth’s. By 1897, Kresge saved up USD6,700 (USD254,520.08 in 2024) and invested it in his own five-and-dime store in Memphis, Tennessee. He expanded into Detroit, Michigan, by 1898. While these weren’t the first Kmarts, these were the first stores Kresge owned himself or jointly.

Kresge continued in the department store business and incorporated in 1912 as the S.S. Kresge Company in Delaware with 85 stores. Kresge then incorporated a new S.S. Kresge Company in 1916 and took over the original company. This company would be

the modern-day Kmart company. By 1918, Kresge managed to list the company on the New York Stock Exchange. He then experimented by raising prices in his stores to USD1 during World War I. Kresge was worth USD375 million by 1924 (USD6.9 billion in 2024) and rapidly opened stores in the years following World War I. Despite retiring as company president in 1925, Kresge continued as company chairman. Kresge had 597 stores by 1929, and while the Great Depression reduced profitability and resulted in store closures, he had 682 stores by 1940. After World War II, people began to move out of city centers and into the suburbs—something that would alter how department stores approached their customers.

Harry Cunningham took over as CEO and opened the “first” Kmart in January 1962 (a mere six months before Walmart opened its doors) in San Fernando, California. This was originally planned to be a Kresge store until late in the planning process. The first full-size, ground-up Kmart opened in Garden City, Michigan, on March 1, 1962. Cunningham had plans to brand Kmart as a discount store, much like the five-and-dimes Kresge operated at the turn of the 20th century. Sixteen more stores opened that year, and Kmart Foods, a supermarket chain owned by Kmart, also opened in the same decade. While branded as Kmart, the store chain was still called S.S. Kresge Company. Kresge himself died in 1966 at age 99. Competition was fierce as many other department stores sought to compete for market share in the rapidly growing suburbs. By 1977, S.S. Kresge Company officially became the Kmart Corporation, and

in 1980, Bernard M. Fauber became the chairman and CEO of Kmart.

1981 was a banner year for Kmart, reaching 2,000 stores in the United States and Canada. Kmart experimented with co-branding in the 1980s, as chains such as Wendy’s also opened inside Kmart. Throughout the 1980s, Kmart was second only to Sears. One marketing tactic that made Kmart unique was the Blue Light Special, which was a flash sale during store hours utilizing a blue light similar to that of a police car. The phrase “Attention Kmart shoppers” signaled the start of the Blue Light Special, which was used to sell slower-moving merchandise and even became a pop culture reference. The Blue Light Special ended in 1991, just as Walmart began to overtake Kmart’s market share; however, the Blue Light Special came back from 2001-2002, 2005, and even as late as 2015.

Due to Kmart taking on a number of business ventures at the time, such as Sports Authority and Waldenbooks, the focus on the department stores began to fade. Co-branding continued as Kmart partnered with Little Caesars Pizza in 1990. Kmart also started to partner with celebrities such as Martha Stewart, Rosie O’Donnell, and Penny Marshall of Laverne and Shirley fame. They even began to open bigger versions of its stores, such as Super Kmart Center and Big Kmart, but this was not enough to stop its loss of market share and the rise of online shopping.

Kmart merged with Sears in 2002 under controversial conditions—then-chairman Charles Conaway

and president Mark Schwartz were accused of an Enron-esque scandal in which they were accused of misleading shareholders and other company officials about the company’s finances. Some reports said the two allegedly purchased airplanes, houses, boats, and other luxuries with the company’s money. Both were dismissed, and Kmart started closing stores and laying off workers throughout the 2000s.

This was not the end of Kmart’s woes. An even more controversial leader, hedge fund manager Eddie Lampert, used his company ESL Investments to purchase a significant amount of Kmart’s debt and continued to downsize Kmart further. He said in 2003, “Sales without profit do not allow a business to be successful in the long term.” While the relationship between Sears, Kmart, and Lampert’s tenure at the helm of Kmart and Sears could be its own article, in short, Lampert and ESL Investments had a large role in dooming Kmart and Sears in the 2000s and 2010s.

The ultimate fate of Kmart? Lampert’s own words can sum it up. “I’m not sure Kmart on its own could ever be a great retailer,” he said in 2018 in the midst of store closures and falling sales and profits. Kmart filed for bankruptcy again that same year, culminating in the closure of the final Kmart in the United States in 2024. Kmart suffered because of the failure to pivot quickly and online shopping, like many other department stores. The death of Kmart isn’t solely Lampert’s doing, but he did significantly accelerate its downfall. While Kmart is (almost) no more, Lampert is still a billionaire, and Kmart lives on as a pop culture icon from which many current department stores drew inspiration in their early days.
