The vivo V40 Lite may not be as powerful as its older siblings, but it still packs a mean punch. It can still run most apps and games, when we tried the vivo V40 Lite we found that it handles esports games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and Honor of Kings flawlessly. When it came to heavier games like Genshin Impact, it can still run it at medium settings but expect a few frame drops during high action sequences.

2. AI Aura Light Portraits and Camera
The vivo V40 astounded us with its AI Aura Light portraits courtesy of its amazing triple Zeiss cameras. While the vivo V40 Lite does not have the same Zeiss optics, it nevertheless captures amazing pictures.
We took the vivo V40 Lite on our trip to Singapore to check out what it can do. The phone did deliver and was able to capture great images even though it does not have the Zeiss partnership. Photos during daylight were crisp and sharp with realistic tones to them, while night shots were pleasantly good. Where the vivo V40 Lite shines is portraits, especially
with its AI Aura Light Portrait. The AI Aura Light allowed subjects to be fully immersed in light while allowing the camera to capture a balanced image.
3. Amazing AMOLED Display
One of the immediate things you’ll notice with the vivo V40 Lite is its display. The vivo V40 Lite is equipped with an FHD+ (2400 x 1080) AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The smooth display is a great companion during our gaming sessions and movie catchup nights.
The display has a peak brightness of 1800 nits, more than enough to use the device under direct sunlight. This is especially useful when you want to capture those amazing pictures under the sun. We found this feature useful when watching movies on our flight with the plane windows opened.
4. Extra capable batteries with 80W Fast charging and 4-year battery health
Another notable feature of the vivo V40 Lite is its 5000 mAh battery. Sure a lot of smartphones now come with 5000 mAh battery as standard, what’s different with the vivo V40 Lite is its 24-dimension battery security protection. The protection ensures that the battery will retain longevity and durability. Based on vivo’s own testing, the battery with 1600 cycles will degrade to 80% of its initial capacity which if you’re charging and discharging fully once per day will take you four years to achieve.
Aside from outstanding battery safety and health system, the vivo V40 Lite has an 80W FlashCharge capability. This means you can get 80% of power in just 30 minutes of charging. For those who regularly charge their device overnight, the vivo V40 Lite also has overnight charging protection where the phone adapts to its user’s sleep habits slowly charging the device before completely filling it up just before you wake up.
5. Durable yet stylish body
The vivo V40 Lite may not have a similar look to its older siblings, but it still a stunning phone to look at. It comes in three colors, Titanium Silver, Dreamy Violet, and Dynamic Black. Our review unit came in the Titanium Silver colorway, which looks like a design from a much more expensive device.
The vivo V40 Lite has an ultra-slim design with just 7.79mm thick. It’s thinner than some of its competitors and at just 188g, it’s significantly lighter too.
The camera setup departs from the vivo V40 with its cushion-cut diamond design. The camera module has a squarer design over the circular housing of the V40. On the sides of the V40 Lite are metallic high-gloss frame which adds to its premium looks. Finally, the Diamond Starry texture of the back helps in elevating the design of the phone as the reflective pattern adds a bit of sophistication.
6. Made for every budget
Finally, and what I think is the single best reason to get a vivo V40 Lite this holiday season – its price. The vivo V40 Lite comes in two distinct variants a 4G model and a 5G model. The 4G variant comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The only difference it has from what we used is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 processor. The vivo V40 Lite comes in at just PHP 13,999.
Meanwhile, there are two variants of the vivo V40 Lite 5G. Our review unit with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage will set you back PHP 15,999. While the other variant with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage retails for PHP 18,999.
Compared to its competitors, the vivo V40 Lite offers a lot more specs for the same and sometimes even lesser price. Plus the wide variety of models and specs means that you can get the vivo V40 Lite and everything it has to offer at prices that makes sense to you.

As the debut model in its BE series, the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 enters the scene with Wi-Fi 7 technology, promising faster speeds, lower latency, and unparalleled stability. This was my first experience with HUAWEI’s implementation of Wi-Fi 7, which only heightened my curiosity to see how it measures up. Let’s dive into what this router offers and how it performs in real-world scenarios.
DESIGN
Unboxing the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 is straightforward—just the essentials, no fluff. The router greets you immediately, neatly encased in protective plastic. Beneath it, you’ll find a power cable, a short Ethernet cable, a quick-start guide, and a warranty card.
The BE3 embraces a minimalist, spacesaving vertical design, standing out with four external antennas that fold neatly when not in use. Measuring 148.8 x 215 x 71.5 mm when folded and 280 x 215 x 61.5 mm when extended, it’s compact and
modern. At the back, there are four LAN ports, a power button, and a power cable port. The front features a single indicator light, subtly placed above the HUAWEI logo. While the clean design is appealing, additional status indicators for signal strength and Wi-Fi status would have been helpful.
HARDWARE
The star feature of the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 is its Wi-Fi 7 capability, delivering speeds up to 3.6 Gbps. Whether you’re downloading massive files, streaming 4K content, or gaming online, this router
promises a seamless experience. It also boasts Multi-Link Operation, allowing connections to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously for faster and more stable connectivity. Complementing this is a 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN port and a built-in network processor with signal amplifiers for consistent performance.
To enhance the experience, HUAWEI integrates the BE3 with its AI Life app, which offers customization and control over the router’s features. However, accessing the app isn’t as smooth as I’d hoped. The QR code on the router directs you to download the app, but it’s not available on the Google Play Store,
requiring users to navigate HUAWEI’s App Gallery instead. A more intuitive setup process would make a big difference.
USER EXPERIENCE
Setting up the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 is a breeze: plug in the power source, connect the Ethernet cable, and scan the QR code. For those unfamiliar with HUAWEI’s ecosystem, downloading the AI Life app may be a hassle, but there’s a workaround—accessing the router settings through the web address provided. From there, you can customize passwords,
activate Multi-Link Operation, and tweak other settings.
Performance-wise, the BE3 shines. Online gaming was lag-free, even in high-stakes moments, and streaming 4K videos at 60fps was buttery smooth. Over the past year, there have been several electric vehicle (EV) launches in the country. Most are priced at over two million pesos, with others sitting in the PHP1.5 to PHP1.8-million range. While the electrified future is exciting, cars at these price points are still a hard sell for Filipinos, most of whom are still on the fence about EVs. That was before BYD Cars Philippines changed the game. Meet the BYD Seagull: a sub-one-million-peso EV that could very well be your first electric car.
DESIGN
The BYD Seagull is quite a looker. Many reviewers and motoring journalists have described it as a “baby Lambo,” and you can definitely see the resemblance with the sharp drop of its hood.
The sides feature a few sharp lines that blend with the car’s body—perhaps more noticeable because of the vibrant Sprout Green color. Below each door, there are “BYD Blade Battery” labels, though these don’t indicate the actual battery location. The car rides on 16-inch wheels with disc brakes on all four corners, while wide LED taillights and a small top-mounted spoiler with an integrated brake light highlight the rear.
Size-wise, the BYD Seagull is a small hatchback, putting it in the same category as the Toyota Wigo, Honda Brio, Suzuki Celerio, and Suzuki S-Presso. Its dimensions are listed at 3,780 x 1,715 x 1,580mm, with a wheelbase of 2,500mm. That long wheelbase translates to more legroom for passengers, giving it an edge in its segment.
One major concern with the Seagull is its published ground clearance—just 120mm laden. On paper, it seems too low. But in practice, I’ve had no issues tackling the bumps and potholes of CAMANAVA and EDSA, even with five passengers onboard.
EQUIPMENT
The BYD Seagull is fully electric, powered by a 30kWh BYD Blade Battery (Lithium Iron Phosphate), giving it an NEDC-rated range of 300km on a single full charge. A front-mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous (PMS) motor delivers 75PS and 135Nm of torque.
When it comes to tech, the Seagull takes a simpler approach compared to its pricier siblings. It features a basic TFT LCD instrument cluster, standard cruise control, a rear camera with sensors, and no major ADAS, though it does have Auto Hold. There are three driving modes—Normal, Eco, and Sport—and traction control for sand and snow.
As for the toys, the car has a 10.1-inch infotainment display that rotates 90 degrees, supporting wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A wireless charger replaces the middle console, while unique touches include an NFC card that acts as a smart key alternative. The BYD app integration also lets you monitor real-time vehicle data like charging percentage and even remotely start the car.
Comfort-wise, the Seagull comes with leather seats all around and auto-climate air conditioning, though vents and controls are limited to the front. On the safety side, it’s equipped with four airbags, Traction Control, Electronic Stability Control, ABS, Hydraulic Brake Assist, EBD, Hill Start Assist, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, and more.
USER EXPERIENCE
After driving the Seagull for over a month, I can confidently say it has brought back the joy of driving for me. It doesn’t have the horsepower or torque of more expensive EVs, but it feels great behind the wheel. Steering is light yet precise, and being an EV, power and torque are instantaneous. If BYD could fine-tune the motor and suspension, this could easily be a fun little hot hatch.
What impressed me most was how planted the Seagull felt on the road. The battery’s weight and placement help maintain a low center of gravity, making it stable even on twisty mountain roads. On highways, overtaking is a breeze—even in Eco mode. Sport mode,
however, takes the driving experience up a notch, putting a grin on my face as it zips through the expressway.
Space-wise, the Seagull offers one of the best rear passenger accommodations in its class. Taller passengers won’t struggle to get in or out of the back. The trade-off, however, is its limited trunk space. At 230-liters, it’s good for a couple of medium-sized suitcases or boxes. Folding the rear seats expands the cargo area but reduces passenger capacity.
In terms of energy efficiency, the Seagull is decent but not groundbreaking. It averages 10kWh per 100km, according to its onboard monitor. Real-world range during the holidays was around 210km, although I often charged it when it hit 30%, with about 70km of range left.
Charging the Seagull has be en a cost-saver. In two months, I’ve saved around PHP7,000–8,000 on fuel. Most of my charging was free, thanks to mall charging stations and our home solar setup. That said, some malls now charge per kWh. Charging times depend on the method: 4.5 hours for a full charge using the included 7kW wall charger, 30 minutes for 30–80% using a DC fast charger (max 30kW), and 10 hours with the portable 3kW charger. Its V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capability also turns it into a giant power bank for home appliances.
In two months, the Seagull has taken over as our daily driver, replacing our MPV—a testament to its practicality and reliability.
VALUE
At its introductory price of PHP898,000, the BYD Seagull is a game-changer. Even at its regular price of PHP938,000, it remains an affordable gateway into the EV market. It’s a compelling choice for first-time car buyers or as a secondary vehicle, thanks to its driving dynamics, tech, and savings on fuel and maintenance. Plus, there’s the bonus of being exempt from coding.
However, condo dwellers or those without reliable home charging might want to wait. Mall charging, while convenient, is becoming less reliable as EV adoption grows. Thankfully, the future of EV infrastructure looks bright. The DOE recently finalized rules requiring gas stations to install chargers under the EVIDA Law, and companies like ACMobility are rapidly expanding charging networks across the country.

FILIPINOS WARM UP TO EVS, BUT INFRASTRUCTURE HURDLES REMAIN
A new Ford Motor Company survey highlights the growing interest in electrified vehicles (EVs) among Filipino drivers, with 44% considering a purchase within the next year. However, challenges such as charging infrastructure and cost misconceptions continue to influence decision-making.
Strong Interest in Electrified Vehicles
Filipino drivers are increasingly open to adopting EVs, with a preference for hybrid technology leading the pack. Seventy percent of respondents see owning an EV in the Philippines as
practical, while 49% have ridden in an EV, and 33% have driven one. Most respondents described EVs as “fun to drive,” “cool,” “sporty,” and “easy to own.”
EVs are also seen as a way to make a statement. Eighty-one percent of respondents said they’d choose an EV to create a positive first impression, while more than half noted that they’d be more likely to date someone who drives one.
Perceived Benefits and Challenges
The survey found that saving money on fuel ranked as the top benefit of
owning an EV. Yet, many respondents remain concerned about maintenance costs, with misconceptions about EV ownership persisting. Nearly half believe that home charging costs are comparable to refueling a gasoline vehicle.
Infrastructure challenges are a significant barrier to adoption. Thirtynine percent of respondents pointed to the lack of adequate charging stations, and nearly half were unaware of any charging points within 20 kilometersof their homes. Most agreed that charging stations should be as accessible as gas stations, with preferences for locations
such as service stations, supermarkets, parks, and recreation facilities.
Filipinos ’ EV Preferences
When asked about their preferred type of EV, respondents overwhelmingly chose hybrids, followed by plug-in hybrids and fully battery-powered vehicles. Capability also matters, with 85% of respondents saying they’d be more likely to purchase an EV with greater towing capacity and off-road capabilities.
EVs were seen as practical for daily commutes and delivery services, with most respondents agreeing that they would choose an EV for ride-sharing or similar purposes. However, there remains a strong demand for EVs that offer longer driving ranges and reduced maintenance costs.
Breaking Misconceptions Through Education
Ford’s survey underscored the importance of public education to
dispel myths about EVs. While many Filipinos view EVs as desirable, persistent “myth-conceptions” about costs and practicality are slowing adoption. The findings highlight the need for advocacy to bridge these knowledge gaps and promote the benefits of electric mobility.

Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 has unveiled a centralized transport hub, revolutionizing passenger access to ride-hailing and taxi services. Officially operational as of December 8, 2024, this new facility enhances convenience, reduces congestion, and elevates the airport experience for millions of travelers.
A Seamless Solution for Airport Transport
Operated by New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), the centralized hub spans 6,000 square meters within Terminal 3’s multi-level parking building. It boasts 401 parking slots, 18 loading bays, and dedicated lanes for Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS) such as Grab, JoyRide, and Angkas’ Angcars. Designed to improve traffic flow and streamline passenger pickup, the facility features multiple entry and exit points to ensure smooth operations.

Leading the Way: Grab and JoyRide

LRT-1 CAVITE EXTENSION PHASE 1 NOW OPERATIONAL
The LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 officially commenced commercial operations on November 16, 2024, marking a significant milestone in Metro Manila’s transportation landscape. The new extension, inaugurated by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on November 15, adds five stations to the LRT-1 line, improving connectivity and easing traffic congestion in the metro.
Bringing Metro Manila Closer Together
The newly added stations— Redemptorist-Aseana, MIA Road, PITX, Ninoy Aquino Avenue, and Dr. Santos (formerly Sucat)—expand the LRT-1 network by 6.3 kilometers, increasing the total line length to 27 kilometers with 25 stations across five cities: Quezon City, Caloocan, Manila, Pasay, and Parañaque.
Starting at 4:30 AM on weekdays and 5:00 AM on weekends, trains will operate until 10:00 PM on weekdays and 9:30 PM on weekends, following the existing service hours for the LRT-1 line. The fare structure remains consistent, with a base fare of PHP 13.29 and PHP 1.21 per kilometer, making the maximum fare for a oneway trip from end to end PHP 45 for Single Journey Tickets and PHP 43 for Stored Value Cards.
Enhancing the Commuter Experience
The new stations are designed with accessibility and convenience in mind. Each station features elevators, escalators, and tactile guides for passengers with special needs, aligning with LRMC’s commitment to inclusivity.

Third-person hero shooters. You love them, you hate them, you find a way to play them because your friends or the Internet (most likely both) rope you into them. But what happens when one of the most beloved franchises of all time in Marvel meets one of the most popular video game genres of all time in hero shooters? You get Marvel Rivals, a hero shooter with all of your favorite Marvel characters ready to face off against one another. From fan favorites such as Spider-Man to obscure characters like Cloak & Dagger, every Marvel fan
from the casual to hardcore have a reason to at least check out the latest 6v6 hero shooter from NetEase Games.
The game is free, although there are unlockable items through a purchasable Battle Pass. Just like most 6v6 shooters, there are roles: tank, damage, and support. Marvel Rivals calls them Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist. There are five lobbies: Tutorial, Quick Match, Pocket Universe, Competitive, and Custom, which allows players to make their own game modes.
Gaming
Considering this is an online game, at the time of writing this review, there are only a few game types. You can push the payload on Convoy maps, capturing points on the map in Domination maps (Marvel Rivals even takes the game mode name from the Call of Duty franchise), and Convergence, a King of the Hill-esque mode where players fight over a single changing area on the map. While I expected at least some level of innovation, perhaps my expectations were a bit high by the standards of the video game industry in 2024.
Learning all of the characters will take some time. One of my favorite characters is Psylocke, who falls into the B-tier of Marvel heroes: not beloved like Spider-Man or Iron Man, but not obscure either. She has a mix of melee and ranged attacks, but a fan favorite (and perhaps a boon or detriment depending on if you’re playing with or against him) is Jeff the Land Shark, who has gained meme status in the game itself due to his status as one of the lesser-known Marvel characters, his appearance of being a shark that acts like a dog, and his ultimate ability of sucking everyone into a whirlpool and spitting them out in all directions.
Speaking of ultimate abilities, Marvel Rivals does something Overwatch has never done in its eight years of existence—allow unite abilities called Team-Ups. While you could technically mix and match ultimate abilities in Overwatch, it required teamwork and strategy to pull off. Marvel Rivals takes it to new heights. While still requiring teamwork and strategy like any other multiplayer game, you can add both passive and active abilities when you mix and match certain characters. Teaming Magik with Black Panther or Psylocke can give you the Limbo ability, which rewinds time a couple of seconds and gives bonus health if they lose health within that time period. Another powerful one is Ragnarok Rebirth, which requires Hela and either Thor or Loki. After Hela kills an enemy, either Thor or Loki can be resurrected. If they’re still alive, she gives them 100 bonus health, which could be a huge advantage if you’re turning the tide of the game in your favor.
What really let me down is not letting the entire lobby view my Play of the Game—something I relished especially when sealing clutch victories with gamedeciding ultimates in Overwatch, but that is replaced by viewing each player’s individual highlights, which means everyone gets into the action, whether they’re brand new or scaling the heights of Competitive Mode. The maps aren’t too bad, but there are only eight of them right now, and hopefully more are on the way given the everexpanding nature of the Marvel Universe. You can also unlock cosmetic items that give your players some variation in look, but some of the best cosmetic items are still locked behind getting out your wallet and making a few microtransactions.
Did Marvel Rivals give NetEase a way in when it came to the overcrowded hero shooter genre? Absolutely, although I’d like to see more franchises take this approach and see what they can do with it. While it is something I’d love to spend hours and hours with my friends on, I can also acknowledge that innovation is key when it comes to games, and that is something we need more of in gaming going into 2025.

Filipino creativity took center stage at the Red Bull Basement World Final 2024, as Aldrin Sojourner “Soj” Gamayon was crowned World Champion on December 5 in Tokyo, Japan. Gamayon’s groundbreaking innovation, AgriConnect, an agriculture tracking app designed to empower remote farmers, captured the admiration of judges and attendees alike, solidifying his place among the world’s most promising young innovators.
A Victory Rooted in Purpose
Gamayon’s triumph goes beyond personal success—it reflects his mission to uplift Filipino farmers. Inspired by his ricefarming heritage, he created AgriConnect to help farmers monitor crops, build resilience, and increase yields. “This means so much because I’m doing it beyond myself. I’m doing this for Filipino farmers,” Gamayon shared.
Far from being solely about competition, Gamayon highlighted the camaraderie among participants. “This wasn’t just about competing or winning. It’s about sharing moments and memories with like-minded people. I share this with all the other teams who are here,” he added.
The Path Forward
Following his win, Gamayon plans to establish partnerships back home in the Philippines to expand AgriConnect’s reach. “It takes a village. I’ll do whatever it takes to make it successful,” he said, emphasizing the need for collaboration to realize his vision.
The Champion’s Journey
Gamayon’s journey to the Red Bull Basement World Final was deeply personal. Returning to the Philippines after an internship in Singapore, he felt a responsibility to give back. “I wanted to make an impact for Filipinos. Piecing together my experiences led me to the farmers,” he explained.

Think of some of the biggest books you might have had around your house. For some, it may be school textbooks. For others, maybe the dictionary or encyclopedia. But one book ruled over all of them—the phonebook. These phonebooks were distributed at regular intervals, easily reaching hundreds of pages. if you lived in a large enough area (i.e. Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao). But a repository of information so large disappeared overnight thanks to the Internet, for better and for worse. What made the phonebook so big (literally and figuratively), and why?
The city directory actually predated the phonebook and listed residences and businesses as early as the 18th century. The phonebook itself started in 1878, a mere two years after the invention of the telephone itself. It consisted as a single piece of cardboard, listing individuals and businesses that had telephones in the city of New Haven, Connecticut. For the organized, it was not listed in alphabetical order, and had no numbers—just a list of people who had telephones.
Dr. Moses Greeley Parker suggested in 1879 that the phonebook format should be changed. Parker’s changes included listing people in alphabetical order as well as telephone numbers. Parker, who lived in Lowell, Massachusetts, suggested this because of the threat that phone operators could contract measles and be unable to connect phone subscribers to each other.
The United Kingdom made their own phonebook in 1880, listing 248 names and addresses of people and businesses living in London. It also had no telephone numbers—one had to ask for names at the exchange. One company, the Reuben H. Donnelly Company, claimed that it also published the first classified directory that would become known as the yellow pages, in Chicago, Illinois, in 1886.
Older readers may remember that phonebooks were sorted by color—yellow pages indicated business numbers, white pages indicated personal numbers, and grey pages, or the “reverse telephone directory” indicated merely phone numbers and who was associated with that number, but was only available to commercial and government agencies. However, given the ease of getting a phone number through numerous means and the ability to spoof phone numbers today,
a modern-day grey pages would have been useful to notice if a number was a scammer or legitimate.
The phonebook also gave rise to a new font, Bell Gothic, in 1938. AT&T invented this font to read it at small font sizes because of the tendency of newspapers to inadvertently print small imperfections. The phonebook remained in its current form until the rise of new gadgets and technology. In 1981, France invented an electronic directory called Minitel. The directory became known as 11 after the telephone access number.
By the 1990s, new legislation governing phone books came about. The United States Supreme Court case Feist v. Rural (1991) ruled that telephone companies had no copyright on telephone listings due to copyright protecting creativity rather than compiling information. Due to the advent of digital storage, phonebooks would move to digital storage and the Internet at this time as well. Belgium launched a digital phonebook in 1995, while the United States moved both the white and yellow pages onliue in 1996 through the websites Yellowpages. com and Whitepages.com. The United Kingdom also moved their directories online in 1999.
Why were phonebooks gone for better and for worse? First off, phonebooks were a strain on the environment to the point that entire cities phased out printing the white pages entirely in the 2010s, such as New York City. It was estimated that in 2010, manufacture and distribution of phonebooks produced 1.4 million metric tons of greenhouse gases and 500,000 tons of paper annually. Why would this be a bad thing, one might ask? As previously mentioned, the ease of getting a phone number and spoofing of said phone numbers gave rise to scammers. Although many scammers would not be listed in a phonebook or directory today, websites and apps have taken their place to identify scammers and nefarious individuals and organizations looking to collect data. It could be argued that phasing out phonebooks may have actually added a layer of privacy, although people can easily be found via social media.
Phonebooks were once a great repository of information to find anyone and anything, but the Internet has largely taken its place. The biggest book in your house may be long gone, but you can now find all that data online— also for better and for worse.
