BELLBIRD
RIVER RED GUM
With their distinctive, piping call, Bellbirds provide one of the signature sounds of the Australian bush. Olive-green with a yellow bill and red eye patch, Bellbirds live high in the tree canopy. Breeding pairs mate for life.
This familiar and iconic tree seen along many watercourses right across inland Australia produces welcome shade and plays an important role in stabilising river banks, holding the soil and reducing flooding.
ROSELLA
PEPPER TREE
First spotted by early settlers in Rosehill NSW, the ‘Rosehillers’ eventually became known as Rosellas. Eastern and Crimson Rosellas nest high in large, older trees and can often be spotted bathing in puddles or shallow water.
A large, spreading tree growing to 12 metres, the Pepper Tree has drooping fern-like leaves which are aromatic when crushed. Flowers hang in clusters and, on the female trees, develop into bright red berries.
FISH
BLACKWOOD TREE
The Yarra River is home to several species of fish, such as Redfin, Macquarie Perch, Brown Trout, Murray Cod and Freshwater Catfish. Dolphins have been known to venture upstream as far as Dights Falls.
The longest living acacia, the Blackwood’s lustrous, finegrained timber is highly valued by furniture and instrumentmakers. An excellent shade tree, its dense, dark green foliage becomes decorated with creamy flowering buds every spring.
DUCKS
YELLOW BOX
Native ducks use the Yarra River and its wetlands for feeding, nesting and breeding. Common species include the Pacific Black, Northern Mallard, and Australian Wood Duck. Grey and Chestnut Teals are frequent sights.
With a spectacular over-arching canopy, the Yellow Box is considered the best native tree for honey. The foliage is grey-green and elegant, and the creamy white flowers very fragrant in spring through summer.
BUTTERFLIES
RIPARIAN VEGETATION
Of 143 species of butterfly in Victoria, more than 40 have been identified on the banks of the Yarra. Living a week to an entire year, butterflies feed on nectar, fallen fruit, and minerals and salts in water.
A dense understorey of silver wattles, river bottlebrush, prickly currant bush and tree violet occurs along much of the river. With rushes and sedges lining the banks, these plants form a rich assortment of textures, colours and perfumes.
