Do you hear the new Irish heartbeat in the Diocese of Cashel and Ossory?

There is a new Irish heartbeat in the Church of Ireland Diocese of Cashel and Ossroy this year. Beginning on 1 February, St. Brigid’s Day, there will be a service in Irish in each of the Cathedrals in the diocese throughout the year. The first services will be held in Kilrush, Co.Wexford and Ballintubbret , Co. Kildare on St. Brigid’s Day at 7.30pm. There will be other services throughout the year in: Waterford Cathedral and Cashel Cathedral (St. Patrick’s Day) , Lismore Cathedral (St. Columba’s Day), St. Cannice’s Cathedral (Harvest Festival) and Leighlin Cathedral (Advent). The Rev. Charles McCollum, commenting on this initiative said, “We had an awareness session with Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise and there were up to 20 members of the clergy expressing an interest in holding services in Irish. We put a rota together and the Irish Heartbeat in the Diocese initiative grew out of this”. Dáithí Ó Maolcoille, Chairman of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise said, “We are delighted to support this initiative. Having a service in Irish offers new insights and understanding of the liturgy for parishioners and clergy and we feel the goodwill expressed on the ground for this initiative”. There are more cathedrals in the Diocese of Cashel and Ossory than in any other diocese in the Anglican Church. The long title of the diocese is the Diocese of Cashel, Waterford, Lismore, Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin. Bishop Michael Burrows is the presiding Bishop in the diocese and he became Patron of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise in 2011.
