Táimid go mór faoi chomaoin ag an gCoiste Gnó agus ba mhaith linn buíochas a ghabháil leo go léir as an obair a rinne siad anuraidh. The Cumann holds its Annual General Meeting close to St. Columba’s Feast day each year. We are grateful for the support from the Management Committee and we would like to thank them most sincerely for their commitment during the last year.

Once again it is a pleasure to introduce and commend this annual account of the activities and vision of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise. Truly this is a record of a highly active and fruitful year which has touched so many people and places across the Church of Ireland. It has been a joy for me as the episcopal patron of an Cumann to have had plenty of direct involvement with the members and their activities. I think of our bilingual televised Eucharist in Lent - with huge audience ratings not least because it was transmitted to a snow bound country where many people physically could not get to church! I think too of the ordination of Trevor Sargent as a priest ... another happily bilingual occasion which received considerable national attention. I mí an Mheithimh bhí sé de phléisiúr agamsa, agus ag Trevor chomh maith, freastal ar chóisir ghairdín in Áras an Uachtaráin ar son Eaglais na hÉireann agus Chumann Ghaelach na hEaglaise, cóisír ag ceiliúradh Bhliain na Gaeilge agus 80ú bliain ó oirníodh Dubhghlas de hÍde ina chéad uachtarán ar Éirinn. I measc rudaí eile, chualamar léacht den chéad scoth an lá sin faoin modh ar ar chuir de hÍde fís Oifige bunreachtúla nua i bhfeidhm i slí cheannródaíoch agus stuama i ndomhan ina raibh imní mhór ar an-chuid daoine roimh chraos na ceannaireachta pearsanta, domhan an fhaisisteachais agus na deachtóireachta. Ní hamháin gur scoláire uasal a raibh meas ag daoine de gach cineál tuairime air é de hÍde … bhí tionchar aige ar an stát nach raibh fós ach nuabhunaithe mar dhuine a bhí géarchúiseach agus a raibh neamhspleáchas intinne aige. Nuair a tháinig roinnt mhaith tíortha faoi anáil dhorcha an fhaisisteachais, chabhraigh neart daoine ar nós de hÍde a chinntiú go bhfanfadh Éire ina tír dhaonlathach bhuanseasmhach, agus cumas sa chóras stáit nach mbeadh aon duine amháin ábalta seilbh a ghlacadh ar an iomad cumhachta ann. Bhíodh tuiscint aige i gcónaí ar chumhacht an
tsiombalachais, an mheafair agus an natha fhileata. In June I had the pleasure, along with Trevor, of being one of the representatives of the Church of Ireland and of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise at a garden party in Áras an Uachtaráin marking both Bliain na Gaeilge and the 80th anniversary of the inauguration of Douglas Hyde as the first president of Ireland. Amongst other things, we heard that day a splendid lecture about how Hyde in a pioneering and wise way implemented in practice the vision of a new constitutional Office in a world highly fearful
of the excesses of personal leadership, a world of fascism and dictatorship. Hyde was not simply a venerable scholar who commanded the respect of all shades of opinion... he was a shrewd and independent minded influence on the still fledgling state. While other countries descended into the darkness of fascism, people like Hyde all helped to ensure that Ireland remained a stable democracy, with careful checks and balances in its national life, where no individual could get their hands on excessive power. He always knew the power of symbolism, metaphor and the poetically - rounded phrase. É ag maireachtáil in atmaisféar tréadach tí reachtaire tuaithe … Ag éisteacht le scéalta draíochtúla “na ngnáthdhaoine” timpeall a bhaile … Ag baint an-sásamh as an teanga a thug draíocht agus cumhacht do na scéalta sin … É ag sú spioradáltacht Anglacánachais chiallmhair agus machnamhaigh … Fios aige faoi leochaileacht pobail mionlaigh agus an luach a bhaineann le comhaltas an phobail sin; ba ghnéithe iad sin ar fad a mhúnlaigh meon an chéad Uachtaráin. In short, Ireland, the Church of Ireland and Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise should this year in a special way express our shared pride that Douglas Hyde came from a background so familiar to ourselves. Historians will debate how the formative influences in his life blended to make him the man he was. Experiencing the pastoral atmosphere of a country rectory ... Listening to the mesmerising stories of the 'gnáthdaoine' around his home ... Relishing the language which gave those stories their music and their power ... Imbibing the spirituality of a moderate and reflective Anglicanism.... knowing the vulnerability and the value of membership of a minority community: these were all factors which moulded the outlook of the first President.

Hyde scoped out the presidential office in a Europe on the edge of war, in a truly frightening international environment. Things may not seem quite so dramatic today, but we ignore the surge of populism, racism and ugly nationalism at our peril. It is surely a time to cherish and celebrate the values which Hyde embodied and the stability which he symbolised. His work to respect and renew a language spoken largely by a minority that lacked power and esteem is a powerful reminder to us, as we cherish our beloved language, also to respect and value the many minorities who speak in a myriad of languages in the Ireland we know today.

(Matha 9:37-8) As I reflect on the work of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise over the last year, I am reminded of the book “Twenty Years a Growing’ by Muiris Ó Suilleabháin. The work of the Cumann could be described as “Twenty Plans a Growing’, as there are many ‘seeds sown’ and the plans are developing but the ‘harvest’ is yet to be determined. As the Lord said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord of the harvest to send workers into His harvest”. There is an incredible amount of work being done by our dedicated committee, and especial thanks to Caroline Nolan, Development Officer and to Dáithí Ó Maolchaoille, our Treasurer and every member on the committee and to Foras na Gaeilge who support and fund our work. But what about the Irish teachers in Church of Ireland schools around the country? Can we encourage more of them to support our work? Several schools are already active, but it would be great if some teachers might offer to write an article or two in Irish or organise an Irish trip to support the Cumann.

Rev Gary Hastings is also leading a new initiative to reprint the Bible in a format suitable for personal use, in the lead up to the commemorations in 2020 to mark the Disestablished of the Church. This comprehensive list offers many opportunities to explore our Irish heritage. What about asking local historians to write an article or two explaining the historical roots of the name? Services and Training: The number of services around the country is growing steadily. I’m pleased to add to this list as I will be celebrating Holy Communion in Christ Church Cathedral, Waterford, as I take
up my ministry in the Déise. I have also noticed the custom adopted by Bishop Burrows and Rev Máirt Hanley to use the bilingual services book to celebrate Holy Communion in our two official languages. It may be helpful to reflect on how we can support priests, deacons and others who wish to include some Irish in their religious services. Walks, Lectures and other social events: I enjoyed our guided tour of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Cumann is now inspired to arrange more activities. We are looking forward to other trips, such as a guided tour of Dublin by Prof Liam Mac Mathúna, and a lecture about Dr. Douglas Hyde. We hope to have an annual list of activities, maybe even monthy activities, with the help of God. An bhfuil sé in am comhdháil a reachtáil? How can we commemorate the Disestablishment of the Church of Ireland? If we will have a new reprint of the Bible in Irish for the launch in 2020, would it be a good idea to organise a conference, for example, with workshops on bilingual services, religious music, as Gaeilge, with Cór Chúil Aodha, maybe! The Interdenominational Service on 19 January 2018 was held in Christ Church Cathedral, together with a special oration to honour the late Bishop Donald Caird. Everyone was so pleased to see Nancy Caird and family. Aonghus Dwane, author of Donald Caird, Church of Ireland Bishop: Gaelic Churchman; A Life gave an insightful address after the service on the great connections that the late Donald Caird had with the Irish language. The lecture is available: https://bit.ly/2yg2SRn A consort of Christ Church Cathedral Choir and the choir from Gaelscoil na Cille, Ashbourne, Co. Meath sang the hymns and the Lord Mayor, Micheál MacDonncha read the first reading. This service is organised in conjunction with an Cumann and Pobal an Aifrinn. It is also great that the World Council of Churches produce the posters for the service in Irish.

Cuisle Gaelach na Scoileanna The Irish Heartbeat in schools - is confident. “Nuair a chualamar go raibh deis againn mar daltaí sa chuigiú bhliain Seachtain Na Gaeilge a eagrú, bhí sé ar intinn aginn ár séacht ndícheall a dhéanamh. Bhíomar ag iarraidh spioráid gach uile dalta sa Scoil Ghráiméir Shligigh a spreagadh mar tá a lán grá againn roimh dár dteanga agus dár gcultúr dúcháis. Ceapann a lán daoine óige gur teanga marbh í an Ghaeilge agus ní thuigeann said an tabhacht agus an cultúr a bhainneann leí. Bhíomar ag teastáil imeachtaí suimiúla a eagrú trí-Ghaeilge le linn na seachtaine mar is féidir le aon duine taitneamh as labhairt na teanga, mar a deir an seanfhocal, “is fearr Gaeilge bhriste ná Béarla cliste.” (Sliocht ón iarratais, An Scoil Ghraiméir). When we heard that we (5th years) could organise Seachtain na Gaeilge we wanted to do our very best so that every student in Sligo Grammar would want to get involved. We have a great love for the language and our culture. Many young people think that Irish is dead and they don’t appreciate its cultural importance. Cuisle Gaelach na Scoileanna The Irish Heartbeat in schools - is strong. With funding support from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise supported four schools in a sharing and learning experience around how young people view Irish in their lives. Ashton School, Cork, The High School, Dublin, Victoria College, Belfast and Wallace High School, Lisburn participated in the project and we wish to express our thanks to the teachers and the pupils who took part. It concluded with a concert in East Belfast Mission in September 2017. Our special thanks to Scoil Ashton and An Ard Scoil for their active support in this project. Cuisle Gaelach, Béal Feirste The Irish Heartbeat in Belfast Bhí Seirbhís Charúil na Nollag i dTeampall Naomh Seoirse, Dé Domhnaigh, 10 Nollaig 2017. Bhí an Canónach Robert Jones, Teampall Naomh Eoin, Maigh Luain, i mbun seirbhíse agus bhí An Ardscoil Wallace i Lios na gCearrbhach ag canadh iomainn i nGaeilge. The service of Lessons and Carols, as Gaeilge, was held in St. George's Church, Belfast on 10 December 2017. The Rev Canon Robert Jones, St John's Malone, presided and Wallace High School, Honours Choir, sang carols in Irish and Latin at the service. Our sincere thanks to Rev. Brian Stewart for coordinating this service.
Turas, East Belfast Mission, Skainos Centre
The final session of our schools project between Ashton School, The High School Dublin, Victoria College Belfast and Wallace High School was held in the Skainos Centre, in conjunction with Turas, East Belfast Mission. It was a great evening of music and song and our thanks to Linda Ervine and Dr. Gordon McCoy for all their support on this project.

We circulated a list of services that were in Irish, bilingual, or had prayers and music, as Gaeilge, for St Patrick’s Day in 18 churches around the country.

Parish Place Names Project The Church of Ireland Directory now includes the Irish name, and meaning, of the parishes in the Church. The list is set out at the end of each Diocese, for example:
Bishop Michael Burrows, introducing the project stated: “A feature of Ireland as a whole, and of the Church of Ireland itself, is our keen sense of place. This sense is enhanced when we study the actual names of places - they are often ancient, and they speak to us of the courage of saints, of local lore and legend, of the characteristic features of an evolving landscape. Very often it is the Irish language which unlocks the layered richness of place names. As a contribution to the wider life of the church, the Irish Guild of the Church has examined local and parochial place names, diocese by diocese, so that we can better understand the historical rocks from which we are hewn. Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise aims to cherish the Irish language in many areas of the life of the church, and is most often associated with the provision of liturgical resources in Irish. This new venture, however, aims to assist church members everywhere in Ireland in deepening their appreciation of the heritage and origins of the parishes which remain so central to the identity and sense of rootedness of us all. “….To unlock placenames is often to tread in the footsteps of saints and to sense the holy. Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise is grateful to the Editor of the Directory for working with us to make this invaluable mine of information readily available”.

OUR THANKS TO ALBERT FENTON AND LOUIS PARAMINTER WHO LOOKED AFTER OUR STAND AT TIMES AND GAVE GOOD ADVICE ABOUT LINKING INTO GUIDED TOURS IN IRISH IN ST PATRICK’S. AS THEY SAY, IT IS GOOD TO TALK!

The Management Committee of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise meets 3-4 times a year. The meetings are usually held in Christ Church Cathedral and we are very grateful for the support from Dean Dermot Dunne and from the staff of the cathedral. They are very helpful and accommodate us in every way they can. We have held committee meetings in Cork and Belfast and it is our intention to have at least one meeting per year outside of Dublin.
