DRIVES FOR HAITI

Despite constant adversity, the Haitian youth wants to lift their head, envisage education, create a career, recreate the world…

Today, the nerve of “their war” is education. “Liège helps Haiti”, ASBL which was created the day after the awful earthquake of January 12, 2012, brings their support through concrete, quality, educational programs. The Association is involved in professional training for several different industries such as hotel management, tourism, teacher training… In order to finance these projects, ASBL relies mostly on the earnings of the quality events that it organizes all throughout the year: concerts, galas, premieres, etc. In 2016, ASBL is starting a new project in the domain of professional training in car mechanics. To lead this project effectively, it will have the advantage of receiving exceptional support.

As a matter of fact, the auto sports industry has a generous heart. The many causes that they support demon strate this. Aston Martin Brussels knows of course that there are many places on this planet that urgently need help. Aston Martin Brussels and ASBL Liège helps Haiti have decided to join forces. This association is to contribute to the improvement of the conditions of catastrophic circulation in a country where life is already so difficult.

Haiti is a country that one relates primarily to with the pictures of the 2010 earthquake. 230,000 people lost their lives and another 310,000 were wounded to different degrees. The material damages were huge, including to the road network. A dramatic situation exists that this poor country is still struggling to reverse today. In addition to the direct consequences of the catastrophe, the country finds itself facing other structural problems that result in horrible statistics. It’s in this way that over the course of these last 10 years, in a country that has barely 10 million inhabitants, almost 7500 people have lost their lives in road accidents, on top of an even higher number of injuries. It goes without saying that in an environment where each day constitutes a struggle for survival, the situation of the injured and invalids is not simple.

The cause of most accidents is the complete absence of maintenance of the dilapidated car fleet and the road network, obsolete equipment and the lack of licensed instructors in the few rare training centers of the country allowing basic and reliable maintenance for the cars. A unique partnership with Aston Martin Brussels aims to help the reinforcement of the training of mechanics in this underprivileged country. The renovation and the equipment of a professional training center, sending on-location trainers and the welcoming of interns in Belgium, are all part of the methods implemented to achieve this goal of reducing the road mortality rate. Road safety is a right for everyone. Furthermore, let’s remember that the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (International Automobile Federation), FIA, considers road safety a priority.

Aston Martin Brussels will compete in the 24 Hours of Spa 2016 for a good cause.

The Aston Martin Brussels Racing team has been an integral part of the competition landscape of Grand Tourism. Under the stewardship of José Farasyn, the training based in Sint-Stevens Woluwe has even built itself a solid track record. Last year, the team’s activities were distributed amongst the British GT, the International GT Open and the French endurance competition V of V. Driving the Aston Martin Vantage V12, Tim Verbergt and Bert Redant landed the title of Endurance Champions of Belgium in 2014, while a year earlier, Aston Martin Brussels won the Team ranking in the Belgian Racing Car Championship. The Verbegt-Redant duo had barely missed the ranking of Drivers. And on the eve of the final in 2014, they had to consider three other candidates to the crown. And it’s finally a Hitchcockesque scenario that prevailed.

“ We indeed thought that our trophies would be shared, Tim Verbergt still recalls it very well, thinking about the disputed Belgian Masters on the Zolder racetrack. Enzo Ide, who accom panied us in an exceptional way, had ended up clipping our rival Anthony Kumpen. When I saw both cars stopped, I was sure that it was over for us. Luckily, Enzo was able to take off before going back to the pit lane. The car was not running well anymore, but I was able to reach the finish line. Not without winning the race. I was very proud for Aston Martin, because this title, they deserved it more than ever after all the efforts made.’

Bert Redant also remembers that day with emotion.

“ For my heart, the day had clearly not been good. I even almost faltered from stress. But when everything was over, I was simply the happiest man in the world.”

That same year, Aston Martin Brussels Racing took part in the 24 Hours of Spa, the undisputable race of reference of the FIA GT international competition since 2001. And it’s all under the banner of ‘Liège helps Haiti’ that Aston Martin Brussels Racing decided to carry out its return in the Ardennes endurance race, which ensures the presence of some drivers of reference in Belgium.

“ Negotiations are ongoing, explains José Farasyn. But I can already guarantee that we will align ourselves with drivers that are well-known both in the northern and southern parts of the country. We will have more information to share soon, but what is for sure is that the entire Aston Martin Brussels Racing team is already motivated by the idea of making the colors of ‘Liège helps Haiti’ shine bright during the 24 Hours of Spa.”
