The Mid Surrey Family Grapevine Area

Here it is - the first issue of 2012. And with it comes a new look Grapevine. There have been a few different ‘looks’ over the last 16 years, but since taking over Photo the Family Grapevine Group with Nikki (one of the of founders) mid way through last year, we have worked Editor hard to find something that will withstand the test of changing trends and take us through a good few years to come. Some aspects are still a work in progress, but we are happy with the result now and hope readers and advertisers are as well. So keep an eye on the main website (see above on the heading) which is progressing well and will have lots of information to compliment our printed publications in due course. If you have a good look through this issue, you will see quite a few schools have open days in March. There are also reader offers from a variety of businesses i.e. no booking fee applies if you quote a code for a babysitting service. Want some yummy cupcakes? Quote Grapevine for 10% off. A - Z Support and Services Special Educational Needs – Unique parent-to-parent ebook launched to help SEN children get the help they need. A mother of two autistic boys from Farnham, Surrey has published a new ebook aimed at helping other parents navigate their way through the special educational needs jungle. It’s been a term and a half since the

big move to secondary school and I’ve settled in quickly. But I know some people aren’t as lucky as I was to find good friends straight away.

Not having friends can make school very difficult, and the longer a child is lonely, the harder it gets to feel like you fit in and are part of the class. This can be a very hard situation to be in and there should be someone to talk to. There are usually people at every school who kids can speak to about friends, settling

in, and growing-up problems. Maybe they may not feel comfy talking to their class teacher with personal problems, so perhaps a parent helper/ teaching assistant, chaplain, or PSHE teacher. Some schools have peer listeners, who are senior pupils who would understand a younger pupil’s worries.

Talking to parents may also feel a bit awkward, so grandparents, aunts and uncles or

an older cousin may help (although perhaps not a younger brother!). If it is too difficult to talk to someone at school or home, then there are help-organisations who will listen to a child’s problems. There are organisations listed in this magazine who are experts in understanding and helping people. Children might not want to telephone strangers, but the internet gives you an easier option. Childline has a brilliant website with the chance to contact helpers by email, lots of information and even games.

The Medicine Garden is a victorian walled garden on Downside Road, Cobham, which has been extensively restored over the last 6 years. Open 7 days a week, with free entry and free parking, it offers an outdoor play area and a lovely cafe. The old gardener's sheds have been refurbished and now house a community of small businesses including a farm shop, garden and gift shop, craft workshop, treatment room and they even have their own weaver! The Larder is a farm shop based in the garden's original Seed Room and specialises in local fare. It stocks an excellent range of local meat, fresh bread, English cheeses, local chocolate and eggs. There are always plenty of tastings on offer and the staff love to talk about where their food comes from. A perfect place to add something delicious to your diet or to buy a gift for a foodie friend. Local Food Festival on bank holiday Monday 7th May. This is to mark Local Food Fortnight, which runs for a week either side of the festival. There will be plenty of local producers selling their wares and cooking demonstrations too. We will also have an Easter Trail for children from 2nd - 15th April and have an art's festival planned for 7/8 July. We have been selected as a beacon site for the Jubilee, so will have a street party on that day too. It's all go here!!
