In the spring issue I mentioned that my new website was well on the way to completion. I’m delighted to say that it’s ‘live’ at last! There has already been Photo significant visitor interest. Celebrate the London 2012 Olympic Cycling Road Races in Leatherhead. Watch the races live or on the big screen, join in the fun or just relax at ‘The Big Weekend’.

Leatherhead Town Centre and Red House Gardens On 28 and 29 July the Olympic Cycling Road Races are coming to Leatherhead. Families are invited to come and watch this live Olympic event and to stay and make a day of it at the Big Weekend. A private company proposes a gasification incinerator in nearby Greenbelt just off the Byfleet Road in Cobham. Besides the 80ft chimney, traffic on the local and surrounding roads will worsen and wood that could be recycled, become a scarcity. These types of facilities encourage deforestation, wildlife dehabitation and global climate change. In all, everything we urge and educate our children to fight against. Current advice by regulatory bodies say that any potential damage to the health of those living close-by an incinerator is so small that it would be undetectable. The Health Protection Agency will commence a two year study into the potential link between the emissions from Modern Well Run Incinerators and health outcomes. There will be live street entertainment from musicians, entertainers and artists and the High Street will be filled with music and a fun family atmosphere. Look out for the live stilt-walking band Top Bananas, have a go at hula-hooping or make your very own medals in our family-friendly craft workshop. You can also watch live Olympic coverage from the BBC on a big screen at the bottom of the High Street. Just a stone’s throw from Leatherhead train station are the Red House Gardens which will offer a relaxed atmosphere for families to sit and enjoy a picnic. You can also watch the live Cycle Races on the big TV screen and refreshments can be purchased. Music and light entertainment will be on offer with the opportunity to participate in free taster sessions of sports such as Spinning Sessions, aerobics or zumba. There will also be a fantastic bouncy castle for children to enjoy. The Big Weekend – be part of the fun!

Sarah’s Law Protecting children is fundamental to our role as parents. We educate our youngsters about the risks we understand such as playing with dangerous objects, road safety etc, but when it comes to protecting them from abuse most parents find themselves in unfamiliar territory. Where we know a person presents a risk to our children we rightly steer clear of them, but if we are unsure about someone who has access to children – perhaps a new partner, or a friend, relative, or neighbour - it has always been difficult to know what to do. To respond to this need, in 2010 the government introduced the Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme. The scheme is often known as Sarah’s Law, after the Surrey schoolgirl Sarah Payne who was murdered in 2000. The scheme allows anyone who has concerns about a person who has access to children, to contact the police and ask whether they have convictions for a child sex offence. The scheme has now been running in Surrey since October 2010 and has been used numerous times to help better protect children in the county. Just one example of this - A Surrey mum was introduced to a friends new partner and immediately got a ‘bad feeling’ about him being around her children. She made an application under the scheme and police were able to disclose to her and her friend that the new partner had convictions for sexually abusing children. Her friend immediately ended the relationship and the children were protected from a potentially harmful situation. If you have concerns about someone who has access to children you can contact Surrey Police via 101 and register your interest. A member of police staff will visit you by appointment to discuss your application, and if it fits the criteria of the scheme they will conduct the necessary checks. If there is something of concern in their background, the police will then consider making a disclosure to the person best able to protect the children – usually their parent(s). Disclosures are made ‘in confidence’ and applicants have to sign an agreement not to misuse the information. A - Z Support and Services

Gillian Turner, Chartered Educational Psychologist, in private practice based in Cobham I specialise in working with children and young people post-adoption who are experiencing school difficulties. Adoption has changed over the years, from a peak of over 22,000 adoptions in England and Wales in 1974 to around 4500 each year nowadays. In the year 2010-11 only 60 babies were adopted in England and Wales – the other adoptions were older children. The average amount of time a child spends in Local Authority Care is about 2 ½ years. This means that these children have often had a difficult start in life. Some of the children who are adopted have complicated acquired learning difficulties that affect their school performance. I work with children who may present as quite able but have real difficulties with attention and concentration, causing them to fall behind at school. This can also lead to a negative view of themselves and difficulties with behaviour or making friends. I find some children have difficulty starting tasks and just seem to freeze, not knowing how to start. I also see the other extreme where a child leaps into tasks without finding what it is all about. Another area is being able to remember what you are doing as you are doing it (known as working memory). It is frustrating when a child has difficulty remembering instructions or seems to drift off in the middle of getting themselves dressed or brushing their teeth – forgetting what they are meant to be doing, but is not surprising if they have come from a very chaotic environment. These difficulties are about the way a child learns, not a sign of low intelligence. When working with children who have these types of difficulties I go back to basics - learning how to learn – using cognitive education programmes, as opposed to spending more time on school-based work. I start with a thorough assessment to show a profile of strengths and weaknesses. This can be quite surprising as often I find there are areas of extreme strength that are masking areas of weakness. I have to unpick where to start and how to work on the areas of weakness. We work on exercises that are unrelated to school work that focus on making the child a more effective and efficient thinker to unlock the child’s potential at school and experience success.
